        Protein Kinase C Activity and Delayed Recovery of Sleep-Wake Cycle in Mouse Model of Bipolar Disorder

        Objective Previous studies reported the delayed recovery group after circadian rhythm disruption in mice showed higher quinpiroleinduced locomotor activity. This study aimed to compare not only Protein Kinase C (PKC) activities in frontal, striatal, hippocampus and cerebellum, but also relative PKC activity ratios among brain regions according to recovery of circadian rhythm. Methods The circadian rhythm disruption protocol was applied to eight-week-old twenty male Institute Cancer Research mice. The circadian rhythm recovery patterns were collected through motor activities measured by Mlog system. Depressive and manic proneness were examined by forced swim test and quinpirole-induced open field test respectively. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay was employed to measure PKC activities. Results The delayed recovery group presented greater locomotor activities than the early recovery group (p=0.033). The delayed recovery group had significantly lower frontal PKC activity than the other (p=0.041). The former showed lower frontal/cerebellar PKC activity ratio (p=0.047) but higher striatal/frontal (p=0.038) and hippocampal/frontal (p=0.007) PKC activities ratios than the latter. Conclusion These findings support potential mechanism of delayed recovery after circadian disruption in bipolar animal model could be an alteration of relative PKC activities among mood regulation related brain regions. It is required to investigate the PKC downstream signaling related to the delayed recovery pattern.

        Machine Learning Algorithms for the Prediction of Locomotor Activity by an Infrared Motion Detector on the Sleep-wake States in Mice

        Objective: Even though studies using machine learning on sleep-wake states have been performed, studies in various conditions are still necessary. This study aimed to examine the performance of the prediction model of locomotor activities on sleep-wake states using machine learning algorithms. Methods: The processed data using moving average of locomotor activities were used as predicting features. The sleep-wake states were used as true labels. The prediction models were established by machine learning classifiers such as support vector machine with radial basis function (SVM-RBF), linear discriminant analysis (LDA), naïve Bayes, and random forest (RF). The prediction model was evaluated by a six-fold cross validation. Results: The SVM-RBF and RF showed acceptable performance within a window of moving average from 480 to 1,200 seconds. The highest accuracy (0.869) was shown by the RF at the interval of 480 seconds. Meanwhile, the highest area under the curve (0.939) was shown by LDA at the interval of 870 seconds. Conclusion: This study suggested that the prediction model on sleep-wake state using machine learning could show an improvement of the model performance when using moving average with raw data. The prediction model using locomotor activity can be useful in research on sleep-wake state.

        Relationship of Circadian Rhythm in Behavioral Characteristics and Lipid Peroxidation of Brain Tissues in Mice

        Objective: This study aimed to explore the relationship among several indices of circadian rhythms and lipid peroxidation of brain tissue in mice. Methods: After entrainment of 4-week-old mice, one group was disrupted their circadian rhythms for three days and the other group for seven days (n = 10, respectively). After a recovery period, the Y-maze test, the elevated plus maze test, the tail suspension test, and the forced swimming test were conducted. To assess lipid peroxidation in brain tissue, thiobarbituric acid reactive substances were measured in the cortex, hippocampus, and cerebellum. Results: When circadian rhythms were disrupted and adapted back to their original rhythm, the recovery time of the 7-day disruption group (median 3.35 days) was significiantly faster than one of the 3-day disruption group (median 4.87 days). In the group with a 7-day disruption, mice that had recovered their rhythms early had higher malondialdehyde levels in their hippocampus compared to those with delayed recovery. The entrainment of circadian rhythms was negatively correlated with the malondialdehyde level of brain tissue. The behavioral test results showed no differences depending on the disruption durations or recovery patterns of circadian rhythms. Conclusion: These results suggest that disruption types, recovery patterns, and the entrainment of circadian rhythms are likely to affect oxidative stress in adolescents or young adult mice. Future study is needed to confirm and specify these results on the effects of circadian rhythms on oxidative stress and age-dependent effects.

        Efficacy of Pericapsular Nerve Group Block for Pain Reduction and Opioid Consumption after Total Hip Arthroplasty: A Meta-Analysis of Randomized Controlled Trials

        The aim of this study was to conduct a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) for comparison of the effectiveness of pericapsular nerve group (PENG) block with that of other analgesic techniques for reduction of postoperative pain and consumption of opioids after total hip arthroplasty (THA). A search of records in the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases was conducted in order to identify studies comparing the effect of the PENG block with that of other analgesics on reduction of postoperative pain and consumption of opioids after THA. Determination of eligibility was based on the PICOS (participants, intervention, comparator, outcomes, and study design) criteria as follows: (1) Participants: patients who underwent THA. (2) Intervention: patients who received a PENG block for management of postoperative pain. (3) Comparator: patients who received other analgesics. (4) Outcomes: numerical rating scale (NRS) score and opioid consumption during different periods. (5) Study design: clinical RCTs. Five RCTs were finally included in the current meta-analysis. Significantly lower postoperative opioid consumption at 24 hours after THA was observed in the group of patients who received the PENG block compared with the control group (standard mean difference=- 0.36, 95% confidence interval -0.64 to -0.08). However, no significant reduction in NRS score at 12, 24, and 48 hours after surgery and opioid consumption at 48 hours after THA was observed. The PENG block showed better results for opioid consumption at 24 hours after THA compared with other analgesics.

        본 연구는 2007년 유치원 교육과정 개정 시안에 대한 유치원 교사의 인식을 살펴보고 이를 통해 2007년 개정 유치원 교육과정의 효과적인 편성ㆍ운영을 위한 지원 방향을 제시하는데 목적이 있다. 전국의 유치원 교원을 대상으로 유치원 교육과정 개정안의 구성 방침, 교육목표, 영역별 교육목표, 영역별 구성 체계와 수준별 교육과정에 대한 설문조사를 실시하였다. 연구결과, 전체적으로 유치원 교육과정 개정 시안에서 제시한 구성 방침을 반영하겠다는 의지가 높은 것으로 나타났으며 교육목표. 영역별 교육목표 영역별 구성 체계 그리고 내용 구성에 대해서도 전체적으로 적절하다고 인식하고 있었다. 유치원 교원들은 수준을 발달수준이며 수준별 교육내용 선정시 판단기준은 유아의 인지적 능력이라고 인식하고 있었다. This study reviews the opinions of kindergarten teachers on the draft revision of the 2007 kindergarten curriculum with a view to presenting guidelines to help ensure that the curriculum can be effectively organized and managed. For this research, a nationwide survey of kindergarten teachers was conducted on the curriculum regarding its principles, educational goals, and objectives and organizational systems of each subject area as well as ability-based education. The teachers have been found to be generally quite willing to apply the curriculum principles to the draft revision. They also expressed positive views on the curriculum's educational goals, objectives and organizational systems of each subject area as well as the contents, Concerning the selection of contents for ability-based education, the teachers were of the view that the cognitive abilities of young children should be the main criteria.

      • Formation of yttria-stabilized zirconia nanotubes by atomic layer deposition toward efficient solid electrolytes

        We describe a fabrication strategy for preparing yttria-stabilized zirconia nanotube (YSZ-NT) arrays embedded in porous alumina membranes by means of template-directed atomic layer deposition (ALD) technique. The individual YSZ-NTs have a high aspect-ratio of well over 120, about ~ 110 nm in diameter, and ~ 14 µm in length. Interfacing the tube arrays with porous Pt was also introduced on the basis of partial etching technique in order to construct Pt/YSZ-NTs/Pt membrane electrode assembly (MEA) structures. The resulting YSZ-NTs MEAs show a 7 mm in diameter with a roughness factor of ~ 2. Area specific resistance was measured up to 1.84 Ω cm2 at 400 °C using H2 as fuel.

        Anger Coping Styles in Patients with Mood Disorders

        Background: Examining anger coping styles in patients with mood disorders is essential for a comprehensive understanding of them. This study aims to compare anger coping styles between patients with mood disorders and healthy individuals. Methods: This study involved 237 patients diagnosed with bipolar and depressive disorders and 310 healthy controls. The Anger Coping Scale, specifically developed to assess anger coping characteristics in the Korean population, was used to measure anger coping styles. A comparison was made between patients with mood disorders and healthy individuals. Results: Patients with mood disorders exhibited higher levels of behavioral aggression (p<0.001), verbal aggression (p<0.001), and anger suppression (p=0.001) styles and lower levels of problem-solving (p<0.001) and tension-releasing (p<0.001) styles when experiencing anger, in comparison to healthy individuals. Furthermore, patients with bipolar disorders demonstrated higher problem-solving (p=0.024) and tension-releasing (p=0.001) coping styles when dealing with anger than patients with depressive disorders. Conclusion: These results suggest that patients with mood disorders may possess more vulnerable anger coping characteristics compared to healthy controls. Additionally, patients with bipolar and depressive disorders exhibit different anger coping styles. Future study should focus on developing anger coping styles in patients with mood disorders.

        윤리적 패션소비에 대한 혜택 및 위험지각이 소비자 태도와 행동의도에 미치는 영향

        This research investigates the mechanism of ethical fashion consumption by examining the effects of benefit and risk perception on ethical fashion consumption attitudes and behavioral intention. To test the hypotheses 300 female consumers between the ages of 20 and 49 were invited as study participants. The reliability and the validity of multi-item constructs were tested by Confirmatory Factor Analysis. The hypotheses were tested by utilizing Structural Equation Analysis and hierarchical multiple regression analysis. The benefit perception of ethical consumption was composed of three benefit types which were altruistic benefit social image benefit and self-oriented benefit. Benefit perception except social image benefit had significant effects on consumer attitudes towards ethical fashion consumption; similarly benefit perception had significant effects on behavioral intention (except self-oriented benefit) which had an effect on behavioral intention only when it was mediated by attitudes. Further analysis was conducted to understand the reason for the weak relationship between attitudes and behavioral intention. Financial and performance risk perceptions were tested for the moderating roles of attitudes and behavioral intention; subsequently only financial risk interacted with attitudes and showed that the positive effects of attitudes on behavioral intention were weakened by a high financial risk perception. Performance risk had a main effect on behavioral intention independent of attitudes. Managerial implication and future study directions are also discussed.
