The core samples collected from the Nakdong River valley area were used to characterize physical properties in relation to depositional units. The physical property data were readily classified in good agreement with the depositional units: Units I, II, III, and IV in ascending order. In other words, the variations in the physical properties reflected well the relative characteristics of the depositional units. Overall, Unit I was characterized by high values of physical properties such as compressional wave velocity (1683 m/s on average), wet bulk density (2.17 g/cm³ on average), and shear strength (41.2 kPa on average), whereas the porosity of Unit I was the lowest (approximately 35%). Moreover, the physical properties other than grain density reflected well the characteristics of each unit, characterized by gradual change from Unit I to Unit IV. Nevertheless, based on the physical property data, the lithology, rather than compaction with burial depth, likely played an important role in the variation of physical properties of each unit. These results suggest that the physical properties were mainly controlled by depositional processes at the time of deposition. The velocity anisotropies were mostly negative without a significant effect of compaction with burial depth. Nevertheless, the cracks occurring along bedding planes after coring were responsible for low horizontal velocities and negative anisotropies.

남극대륙은 바람이 강하며 지구상에서 가장 기온이 낮고 건조한 극한환경 조건으로서 지표면의 암석은 동결-융해에 의해 암석의 역학적 특성이 변해왔다. 극지 암석의 지반공학적 특성을 이해하기 위하여 남극에서 직접 암석을 채취하여 암석의 물리적ㆍ역학적 특성을 분석하였다. 서남극 케이프 벅스 및 동남극 테라노바 만의 암석은 국내 편마암이 보이는 대표적인 물성 값의 범위내에 존재하고 있었으며, 케이프 벅스의 노출된 암석이 테라노바 만에 비하여 암반 강도가 큰 것으로 나타났다. 테라노바 만의 지표에 노출된 암석의 평균 흡수율은 0.56%, 평균 P파 속도는 3,717㎧ 일축압축 강도는 109㎫로 측정되었으며, 시추조사로부터 채취한 심도 2.9m 이상의 암석 평균 흡수율은 0.24%, 평균 P파 속도는 4,670㎧, 일축압축 강도는 88㎫로 측정되었다. 테라노바 만의 지표면에 노출된 암석과 심부에서 채취한 암석을 비교한 결과, 노출된 암석은 동결-융해의 영향으로 판단되는 역학적 특성 변화는 나타나지 않았으나 흡수율-p파 속도 변화의 물리적 특성 변화는 잘 나타났다. The Antarctic continent exposed to strong wind, very low temperature, and extremely dry condition. The freezing-thawing cycles under this extreme environment change the mechanical characteristics of rocks near the ground surface. To investigate the effect of freezing-thawing cycles under the extreme environment understand on geotechnical properties of rocks, rocks from the Antarctica were collected from two places: (1) West Antarctic Cape Burks and (2) East Antarctic Terra Nova Bay areas. The rock characteristics of these two areas were described and compared. For Terra Nova Bay area, rock characteristics of rocks near the surface and depths exceeding 2.9 m were examined. The ‘near-the-surface rocks’ averages of absorption rate, P-wave velocity, and unconfined compressive strength were 0.56%, 3,717 ㎧, and 109㎫, respectively; while, those values of ‘deep-sited rocks’ were 0.24%, 4,670 mis, and 88㎫. From the measurements, it was found that the effects of weathering were not significant on mechanical characteristics (strength) but were pronounced on physical characteristics(absorption and P-wave velocity).
Multiple Myeloma in a Patient with Acromegaly

Acromegaly is a slowly progressing condition resulting from excess growth hormone (GH), generally caused by a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma. Cancer is the third most common cause of mortality in patients with acromegaly, and insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) is known to influence tumor formation by increasing cell proliferation and inhibiting apoptosis. Multiple myeloma (MM) is a plasma cell neoplasm, and previous studies have suggested the possible role of IGF-1 in its development of MM. However, no cases of acromegaly accompanied with MM have been reported in Asia to date. We here report the case of a 58-year-old woman with acromegaly accompanied with MM who presented with longstanding acromegalic manifestations resulting from a GH-secreting pituitary adenoma and also exhibited anemia, a reversed albumin/globulin ratio, and plasmacytosis on bone marrow examination. Because IGF-1 has been suggested to play an important role in the development and progression of MM, the patient promptly underwent surgical removal of the pituitary adenoma via a transsphenoidal approach. Since there is currently no consensus on therapeutic guidelines and suggested prognosis for MM with acromegaly, long-term follow-up of such cases is needed.

The study was carried out to evaluate and compare the immune responses in mice experimentally infected with either wild-type or isogenic mutants of Salmonella enterica serovars Enteritidis (SE), Salmonella Typhimurium (ST) and Gallinarum (SG). The mutant strains were constructed by allelic replacement of some virulence-associated genes in the wild-type strains. Seven-week-old female BALB/c mice were orally or intraperitoneally inoculated by injecting bacterial suspension. To evaluate the immune responses, enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and enzyme-linked immunospot (ELISPOT) assay were conducted with serum and fecal samples. As a result, the mice group infected orally with the SE mutant strain showed the highest level of specific IgA-secreting splenocytes, compared to the other groups. The peritoneally injected groups showed the greater levels of IgG1 than the orally injected groups, which was in a good agreement with the previous studies. In addition, the mutant infected groups had the similar secretion levels of antibodies with the wild-type infected groups. These results demonstrated that the SE mutant strain elicited humoral immune response as much as wild-type, implying that it can be useful as a delivery vehicle as well as a candidate of a live attenuated vaccine.
Chronic intractable diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal mastocytosis

As mast cells have been highlighted in the pathogenesis of diarrhea-predominant irritable bowel syndrome, a new term “mastocytic enterocolitis” was suggested by Jakate and colleagues to describe an increase in mucosal mast cells in patients with chronic intractable diarrhea and favorable response to treatment with antihistamines. Although it is not an established disease entity, two cases have been reported in the English medical literature. Here, for the first time in Asia, we report another case of chronic intractable diarrhea caused by gastrointestinal mastocytosis. The patient was a 70-year-old male with chronic intractable diarrhea for 3 months; the cause of the diarrhea remained obscure even after exhaustive evaluation. However, biopsy specimens from the jejunum were found to have increased mast cell infiltration, and the patient was successfully treated with antihistamines.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We investigated the role of <I>mortalin</I> (<I>HSPA9</I>) and its interaction with other mitochondria-related genes (<I>parkin</I>, <I>PINK1</I>, <I>DJ1</I>, and <I>COQ2</I>) as a risk factor for Parkinson's disease (PD) and Alzheimer's disease (AD) in 500 PD, 400 AD, and 500 control subjects. The <I>HSPA9</I> variants identified by direct sequencing or its interaction with other genes assessed by genetic risk scores did not show a significant association with PD or AD risk. Our findings did not provide a strong evidence for the role of <I>HAPA9</I> and its interaction with other mitochondria-related genes as a genetic risk factor for PD or AD.</P>

<P>Silica nanoparticles (SNPs) are widely used in many scientific and industrial fields despite the lack of proper evaluation of their potential toxicity. This study examined the effects of acute exposure to SNPs, either alone or in conjunction with ovalbumin (OVA), by studying the respiratory systems in exposed mouse models. Three types of SNPs were used: spherical SNPs (S-SNPs), mesoporous SNPs (M-SNPs), and PEGylated SNPs (P-SNPs). In the acute SNP exposure model performed, 6-week-old BALB/c female mice were intranasally inoculated with SNPs for 3 consecutive days. In the OVA/SNPs asthma model, the mice were sensitized two times via the peritoneal route with OVA. Additionally, the mice endured OVA with or without SNP challenges intranasally. Acute SNP exposure induced significant airway inflammation and airway hyper-responsiveness, particularly in the S-SNP group. In OVA/SNPs asthma models, OVA with SNP-treated group showed significant airway inflammation, more than those treated with only OVA and without SNPs. In these models, the P-SNP group induced lower levels of inflammation on airways than both the S-SNP or M-SNP groups. Interleukin (IL)-5, IL-13, IL-1β and interferon-γ levels correlated with airway inflammation in the tested models, without statistical significance. In the mouse models studied, increased airway inflammation was associated with acute SNPs exposure, whether exposed solely to SNPs or SNPs in conjunction with OVA. P-SNPs appear to be relatively safer for clinical use than S-SNPs and M-SNPs, as determined by lower observed toxicity and airway system inflammation.</P>
