Objective : The aim of this study were to measure quality of life(QOL) in liver transplant recipicnts, to ocmpare QOL between living donor liver transplant recipicnts and cadavcric live transplant recipients and to investgatre whether SF-36 may be used as a disease-specific instrument in liver transplant recipients. Methods : We conducted a single-center cross-sectional study of 133 LT recipients ages 13 to 65 years, all of whom had had Liver Transplantion(LT) at least 1 months previously. QOL was assessed using a self-completion questionnaire consisting of the Bang Whal Ran(1991) instruments and the 36-Item Short-Firm Health Survey(SF-36) health status profile measure. We investigated whether the SF-36 instrument may be used as a disease-specific instrument in LT recipients. Individual scale scores range from 0 to 100 , with higher score reflecting better health. Data on demograpics, clinical status at pre transplantation 1 day, post transplantation clinical statns, and graft gunction were collected to identify predictors of post transplantation QOL. Results : Standard measures for test-rtest reliability, internal consistency, and discriminant and concurrent validity were examined. The reliability of the SF-36, as measured by test-retest correlation(Pearson coeffocoents: 0.729, p=0.002) and by internal consistency (Cronbach's alpha: 0.9431) exceeded conbentional acceptability criteria. The correlation between domain scores of SF-36 and the Bang Whal Ran(1991) was clear and logical in that the clinical characteristics of SF-36 strongly correlated with the clinical component summary score of the Bang Whal Ran(1991)(r = 0.8155, P<01). SF-36 scale scores were compared between Cadaveric Liver Transplant recipients and Living Donor Liver Transplant recipients. Donor types of post LT did not influence HRQOL(P >0.05). 87% of the liver transplant recipients were safisfied to get LT. Satisfaction of post LT showed significantly greater HRQOL(p<0.001). Conclusion : SF-36 is found reliable and valid. This study indicates thet Donor Type did not influence HRQOL after LT. The information gained from this study will help us to better define expectations and the colinical course after liver transplantation to patients and their families.
Pt-Catalyzed Growth of Amorphous SiOx Nanowires

We have fabricated SiO$_x$ nanowires on a large scale through a Pt-catalyzed process. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) investigation revealed that the nanowires had diameters in the range of 30 $\sim$ 130 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD), selected area electron diffraction (SAED), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) analyses indicated that the nanowires were amorphous and consisted only of Si and O elements. The growth of the SiO$_x$ nanowires was most likely controlled by the base-growth mechanism with the assistance of the underlying Pt layer. The room-temperature PL spectrum measurement showed a broad emission band, peaking around 3.0 eV. This simple heating method, with the effectiveness of the Pt catalyst, can be applied to a wide range of substrate materials, which may contribute to producing various useful nanostructures.

<P>The aim of this study was to investigate time trends in the public awareness of stroke and its predicting factors. The target population was 9,600 community-dwelling adults, aged 19–79 years, in 16 metropolitan cities and provinces in Korea. The survey samples in 2012 and 2014 were selected separately (entirely different sets of subjects) using a proportionate quota sampling method. Information concerning knowledge of stroke and demographics was collected by trained telephone interviewers using random digit dialing. After excluding subjects with a non-response or refusal to answer any question, the analyses included 8,191 subjects in 2012 and 8,127 subjects in 2014. Respondents’ awareness of stroke warning signs (numbness or weakness, difficulty speaking or understanding speech, dizziness, visual impairment, and severe headache) was highest for difficulty speaking or understanding speech (80.9% in 2012 and 86.4% in 2014). There were significant increases in the proportion of respondents understanding the appropriate action (i.e., calling an ambulance) at the time of stroke occurrence (59.6% to 67.1%), and in the proportion aware of the general need for prompt treatment (86.7% to 89.8%). In multivariable logistic regression analysis, older age, higher education level, higher household income, current non-smoking, exposure to stroke-related public relations materials, and experience of stroke education were significantly associated with both high knowledge of stroke warning signs and awareness of the need for prompt treatment. Between 2012 and 2014, the public’s awareness of stroke increased significantly. More specialized interventions, including public relations materials and education, should focus on subgroups who have lower stroke knowledge.</P>

Aurintricarboxylic acid (ATA) prevents apoptosis in a wide range of cell types, including PC12 cells. ATA is known to increase the phosphorylation level of IGF-1 receptor (IGF-1R) and downstream signaling proteins. ATA can translocate across the plasma membrane of PC12 cells and inhibit protein tyrosine phosphatases (PTPs) and, therefore, it is not clear whether ATA exerted its antiapoptotic effect through activation of IGF-1R or by inhibition of cytosolic PTPs. When PC12 cells, deprived of serum, were treated with Fab fragment of anti-IGF-1R antibody to prevent the binding of ATA to the extracellular domain of IGF-1R, ATA was found to penetrate into the cytosolic space of the cells. Under these conditions, the survival-promoting effects of ATA were abolished, and the increase of phosphorylation and characteristic cleavage of IGF-1R were not observed. These results indicate that the antiapoptotic effect of ATA in PC12 cells is due to the binding of ATA to the extracellular domain of IGF-1R and subsequent activation of the IGF-1R, not inhibition of cytosolic PTP(s).

<P>The detection of fluorescent probes for biomolecules and control of the function of a complex through a recognition process have not been investigated intensively. A fluorescent peptidyl probe (1) based on the self-assembly stimulated by heparin was synthesized. The fluorescent probe with an aggregation-induced emission fluorophore formed a self assembling complex with heparin, resulting in a sensitive and selective turn-on response to heparin compared to its biological competitors. The detection limits for heparin were measured to be 138.0 pM (R-2 = 0.976) in aqueous solution and 2.6 nM (R-2 = 0.996) in aqueous solution containing human serum. Nanosized aggregates formed through the self-assembly of the complex showed potent resistance against the heparin-digestive enzyme. The dual role of the probe for the detection of heparin and the inhibition of heparinase-mediated digestion through the recognition process was used for the real-time monitoring of the enzyme activity of heparinase for the digestion of heparin. Furthermore, the dual role of the probe was applied for the detection of the oversulfated chondroitin sulfate contaminant in heparin.</P>

<P>The use of peptides as gatekeepers for payloads of mesoporous silica nanoparticles would allow triggering the release of guests by various biological stimuli. We investigated the effect of peptide conformation on their gatekeeping capability by employing two model peptides with a turn or a random structure. The conformation-dependent gatekeeping properties provided an opportunity to utilize the conformational conversion of peptides as a valuable motif for stimuli-responsive gatekeepers. Based on that investigation, we demonstrated that Fmoc-CGGC-SS-Si, which exhibited a zero-release property without any stimuli due to a turn-like conformation induced by the intramolecular disulfide bond, can be triggered to release guests by converting its conformation to a random structure, induced by reduction of the disulfide bond upon addition of glutathione. The automated teller machine (ATM) is developed as a system to provide customers with an easy deposit and withdrawal of their money without time restriction and be served for 24 hours. Today, ATM is come up to the level of an unmanned branch. The automatic financing system is developed as an essential one for dealing with the rationalization of management and the globalization of financing in order to improve the efficiency of financial management work and increase the customer service quality. With reducing the operational cost of financial organizations through the efficient maintenance operation of ATM and increasing the service quality through the maximization of its processing efficiency, this study is to draw the scheme to ensure the competitiveness among the finance companies. The importance of ATM is highly recognized as the utilization of ATM is increased and the processing function is extended, but ATM is quite vulnerable to the malfunction occurred during the nighttime after banking hours. The ATM maintenance is done through consignment to the specialized maintenance company. The efficient operation of ATM maintenance work is important to the satisfaction of customer using ATM in the nighttime.
