Shen-Kang protects against tacrolimus-induced renal injury

        Long Ye Zhang,Jian Jin,Kang Luo,Shang Guo Piao,Hai Lan Zheng,Ji Zhe Jin,임선우,최범순,양철우,Can Li 대한내과학회 2019 The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine Vol.34 No.5

Background/Aims: Evidence suggests that Shen-Kang (SK), a traditional Chinese herbal medicine, protects against various types of renal injury. In this study, we evaluated whether SK treatment confers renoprotection in a rat model of chronic tacrolimus (TAC) nephropathy. Methods: Rats were treated daily with TAC (1.5 mg/kg, subcutaneously) and SK (450 mg/kg, intravenously) for 4 weeks. The effects of SK on TAC-induced renal injury were assessed by measuring renal function, urine albumin excretion, histopathology, inflammatory cell infiltration, expression of profibrotic (transforming growth factor β1 [TGF-β1] and TGF-β inducible gene-h3 [βig-h3]) and proinflammatory cytokines, oxidative stress, and apoptotic cell death. Results: Administration of SK preserved glomerular integrity (fractional mesangial area and Wilms tumor 1-positive glomeruli), attenuated tubulointerstitial fibrosis, and reduced the number of ectodermal dysplasia 1-positive cells, and this was paralleled by improved urine albumin excretion and renal dysfunction. At the molecular level, SK treatment suppressed expression of TGF-β1/Smad2/3, βig-h3, and proinflammatory cytokines. Oxidative stress and apoptotic cell death were significantly decreased with SK treatment, and apoptosis-related genes were regulated toward cell survival (active caspase-3 and the B-cell lymphoma-2/ Bcl2-associated X [Bcl-2/Bax] ratio). Conclusions: SK protects against TAC-induced renal injury.

The Effects of Shopping Values on Mainland Chinese Tourists` Shopping Satisfaction in South Korea

        Luo, Yuli,Song, Hyoung Ju(송형주),Kang, Kyung Ho(강경호) 한국서비스경영학회 2016 서비스경영학회지 Vol.17 No.4

It is crucial to investigate factors affecting mainland Chinese tourists’ shopping satisfaction, considering their great contribution to tourism shopping income in South Korea. Based on previous studies, shopping satisfaction is determined by utilitarian value and hedonic value and each of the value has a formative second-order construct values. Additionally, according to some former studies, factors affecting shopping satisfaction are different depending on gender. Thus, the objective of this study is to examine the gender difference in the context of effects of shopping values on shopping satisfaction of mainland Chinese tourists who have a shopping experience in Seoul, South Korea. Data were collected through questionnaires distributed at popular tourism shopping sites in Seoul, South Korea. The results of this study show that the sources of shopping satisfaction of female mainland Chinese tourists are values of product offerings, product information, convenience, adventure, gratification, and socialization; those of male are values of product offerings, gratification, and socialization. This study is expected to contribute to the current tourism shopping literature and provide valuable information to retailers in South Korea.

The safety, immunological benefi ts, and effi cacy of ginseng in organ transplantation

        임선우,Kang Luo,Yi Quan,Sheng Cui,Yoo Jin Shin,Eun Jeong Ko,Byung Ha Chung,양철우 고려인삼학회 2020 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.44 No.3

Korean ginseng (Panax ginseng) is associated with a variety of therapeutic effects, including antioxidative,anti-inflammatory, vasorelaxative, antiallergic, antidiabetic, and anticancer effects. Accordingly, the useof ginseng has reached an all-time high among members of the general public. However, the safety andefficacy of ginseng in transplant recipients receiving immunosuppressant drugs have still not beenelucidated. Transplantation is the most challenging and complex of surgical procedures and may requirecausation for the use of ginseng. In this regard, we have previously examined the safety, immunologicalbenefits, and protective mechanisms of ginseng with respect to calcineurin inhibitor-based immunosuppression, which is the most widely used regimen in organ transplantation. Using an experimentalmodel of calcineurin inhibitor-induced organ injury, we found that ginseng does not affect drug levels inthe peripheral blood and tissue, favorably regulates immune response, and protects against calcineurininhibitor-induced nephrotoxicity and pancreatic islet injury. On the basis of our experimental studies anda review of the related literature, we propose that ginseng may provide benefits in organ transplantrecipients administered calcineurin inhibitors. Through the present review, we aimed to briefly discussour current understanding of the therapeutic benefits of ginseng related to transplant patient survival.

Regenerated silk fibroin based on small aperture scaffolds and marginal sealing hydrogel for osteochondral defect repair

        Yinyue Luo,Menglin Xiao,Bushra sufyan Almaqrami,Hong Kang,Zhengzhong Shao,Xin Chen,Ying Zhang 한국생체재료학회 2023 생체재료학회지 Vol.27 No.00

Background Osteochondral defects pose an enormous challenge without satisfactory repair strategy to date. In particular, the lateral integration of neo-cartilage into the surrounding native cartilage is a difficult and inadequately addressed problem determining tissue repair’s success. Methods Regenerated silk fibroin (RSF) based on small aperture scaffolds was prepared with n-butanol innovatively. Then, the rabbit knee chondrocytes and bone mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) were cultured on RSF scaffolds, and after induction of chondrogenic differentiation, cell-scaffold complexes strengthened by a 14 wt% RSF solution were prepared for in vivo experiments. Results A porous scaffold and an RSF sealant exhibiting biocompatibility and excellent adhesive properties are developed and confirmed to promote chondrocyte migration and differentiation. Thus, osteochondral repair and superior horizontal integration are achieved in vivo with this composite. Conclusions Overall, the new approach of marginal sealing around the RSF scaffolds exhibits preeminent repair results, confirming the ability of this novel graft to facilitate simultaneous regeneration of cartilage–subchondral bone.

A Portable Bender Element-Double Cone Penetration Testing Equipment for Measuring Stiffness and Shear Strength of In-Situ Soft Soil Deposits

        Xin Kang,He-Mei Sun,Hong Luo,Tian Dai,Ren-Peng Chen 대한토목학회 2020 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.24 No.12

A portable bender element-double cone penetration (BE-DCP) testing equipment, which is invented as a prototype model for measuring the small-strain stiffness (shear wave velocity, Vs) and shear strength of in-situ soft soil deposits (loose sand and soft clay) is developed in this study. The shear wave velocity in two orthogonal directions (V s-hv and V s-hh) of the in-situ soils is measured from paired bender elements (BE) installed on the side of the cone shaft. The bender elements are housed in a mechanically controlled sliding block in the shaft which not only protects bender elements while the BE-DCP apparatus is being pushed into the ground, but also ensures a good contact between adjacent soil particles and benders when the target depth is reached. The real-time relationship of the pushing force and penetration depth is recorded by force transducer and laser displacement sensor and graphed in LabVIEW. Based on the cone penetration testing (CPT) theory, two formulas are derived to calculate the shear strength parameters of the in-situ soils. Test results obtained from both the portable bender element-double cone penetration (BE-DCP) testing apparatus and conventional laboratory experiments on Ottawa sand 20/30, four different sizes of Dolomite sands in various packing densities and Kaolinite under different water contents and densities as well as a field testing were compared and validated, indicating that the novel designed portable bender element-double cone penetration (BE-DCP) apparatus is robust, fast, and cost-efficient for measurement of small-strain stiffness and shear strength of in-situ soils.

Insulin receptors regulate the fecundity of Nilaparvata lugens (Stål) (Hemiptera: Delphacidae)

        Liu Yong-Kang,Luo Yu-Jia,Deng Ying-Mei,Li Yan,Pang Xiao-Qing,Xu Cai-Di,Wang Shi-Gui,Tang Bin 한국응용곤충학회 2020 Journal of Asia-Pacific Entomology Vol.23 No.4

Two InR (insulin receptor) genes have been identified in the Nilaparvata lugens. In this study, we used RNA interference (RNAi) to investigate the role of InR genes in the fecundity of N. lugens. The expression of NLInR1 and NLInR2 genes was simultaneously silenced with mixture of dsInR1 and dsInR2 (dsInRs) injection. Our results showed that larvae RNAi against both NLInR1 and NLInR2 reduced the number of eggs laid by N. lugens and some eggs as well as ovaries were abnormal. In addition, the relative expression of Vg (vitellogenin) and VgR (vitellogenin receptor) was significantly reduced on the 4th and 6th days after insects treated with larvae RNAi reached the adult stage. We also determined the relative expression levels of insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) related genes in RNAi-treated larvae and found that the expression levels of Chico (homologous receptor substrate), Akt (protein kinase B), PI3K (phosphoinositide 3-kinase), and PTEN (phosphatase and tensin homolog) genes decreased whereas FOXO (forkhead box O) and GSK3 (glycogen synthase kinase-3) levels increased on the 4th and 6th days after insects reached the adult stage. These results indicate that silencing of NLInR1 and NLInR2 reduces the fecundity of N. lugens through the IIS pathway.
