Effect of file size in measuring electronic working length of teeth with open apex

This study aimed to evaluate the effect of file size in measuring the electronic working length of teeth with open apex. Twenty teeth were prepared to make the open apex models. A bur was used to cut a 2-mm apical end; the point where #10K file’s tip was reflected on the cut root surface was set to the actual root canal length (AL). A divergent open apex was prepared by retrograde apical preparation. The teeth that were covered with a gauze soaked with saline were inserted in a plastic mold, and an electronic apex locator was connected with it. In each tooth, #10, #20, #30, #40, #50, #60, #70, and #80 files were inserted into the root canal, and the electronic working length (EL) was measured at the “Apex” signal. Then, the mean difference (ΔL) between the AL and EL was evaluated for each file size. EL measurements with all file sizes were short of the apical foramen, and there was a significant difference when the file size increased from #10 to #20 and #40 to #50. Within this study’s limitations, the file size showed an impact in measuring the teeth’s EL with open apex. When the size of the apical foramen is 1.14 mm, it is more accurate to use a file of #50 size or larger when measuring the working length with an electronic apex locator.
Giant congenital lymphangioma at chest wall : Case Report, Using picibanil (OK-432) Sclerotherapy

Fetal lymphangioma, benign tumor, is an uncommon congenital malformation of the lymphatic system, arising from blockage of lymphatic flow. It is characterized by a thin-walled cystic dilation usually around neck and axillary region. It typically develops between late in the first trimester to early in the second trimester. Moreover, it is highly associated with chromosomal abnormalities and poor outcomes. We report a rare live-born case of giant septated, chest wall lymphangioma that underwent prenatal expectation treatment. The lymphangioma was treated of picibanil (OK-432) sclerotherapy 9 days after birth. Picibanil (OK-432) is a lyophilized mixture of group A Streptococcus pyogenes with antineoplastic activity, because of its capacity to produce a selective fibrosis of lymphangiomas. In the following 29 days, we were observed decreasing size of lymphangioma.

Purpose: The use of prophylactic central neck dissection (PCND) and the extent of thyroid surgery in clinically nodenegative (cN0) papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC) are controversial. This study aimed to investigate whether the extent of thyroid surgery influences the prognosis of patients with PTC with central lymph node metastasis (N1a), which was cN0 but pathologically confirmed after PCND. Methods: This was a single-center retrospective study using medical records. Patients who underwent thyroid surgery with PCND for the treatment of PTC between 2004 and 2019 were included. Predictive factors and local recurrence rates were analyzed. Results: Of 2,274 patients with cN0 PTC, 436 were confirmed to have pathologic N1a disease after PCND. Among them, 340 patients (78.0%) underwent total thyroidectomy (TT) and 96 patients (22.0%) underwent less than TT. Of the 374 patients who were followed up for >6 months, 5 (1.3%) experienced recurrence. The 15-year recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate was 98.2%. No clinicopathologic factor was predictive of tumor recurrence. RFS tended to be lower in patients who underwent less than TT than in those who underwent TT; however, the difference was not statistically significant. Conclusion: Our study showed low recurrence rates in patients with cN0 PTC pathologically confirmed as N1a after PCND. The RFS did not differ according to the extent of thyroid surgery. Considering the low recurrence rate and the surgical morbidity associated with thyroid surgery, less than TT with PCND may be considered for patients with cN0 unilateral PTC even with a pathologic staging of N1a after PCND.

<P>Polyaniline (Pani) and polypyrrole (Ppy) half hollow spheres with different shell thicknesses were successfully synthesized by three steps process using polystyrene (PS) as the core. The PS core was synthesized by emulsion polymerization. Aniline and pyrrole monomers were polymerized on the surface of the PS core. The shells of Pani and Ppy were fabricated by adding different amounts of aniline and pyrrole monomers. PS cores were dissolved and removed from the core shell structure by solvent extraction. The thicknesses of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres were observed by FE-SEM and FE-TEM. The chemical structures of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres were characterized by FT-IR spectroscopy and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The shell thicknesses of the Pani half hollow spheres were 30.2, 38.0, 42.2, 48.2, and 52.4 nm, while the shell thicknesses of the Ppy half hollow spheres were 16.0, 22.0, 27.0, and 34.0 nm. The shell thicknesses of Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres linearly increased as the amount of the monomer increased. Therefore, the shell thickness of the Pani and Ppy half hollow spheres can be controlled in these ranges.</P>

<P>The influence of spinal cord injury (SCI) on protein expression in the rat urinary bladder was assessed by proteomic analysis at different time intervals post-injury. After contusion SCI between T9 and T10, bladder tissues were processed by 2-DE and MALDI-TOF/MS at 6 hr to 28 days after SCI to identify proteins involved in the healing process of SCI-induced neurogenic bladder. Approximately 1,000 spots from the bladder of SCI and sham groups were visualized and identified. At one day after SCI, the expression levels of three protein were increased, and seven spots were down-regulated, including heat shock protein 27 (Hsp27) and heat shock protein 20 (Hsp20). Fifteen spots such as S100-A11 were differentially expressed seven days post-injury, and seven proteins including transgelin had altered expression patterns 28 days after injury. Of the proteins with altered expression levels, transgelin, S100-A11, Hsp27 and Hsp20 were continuously and variably expressed throughout the entire post-SCI recovery of the bladder. The identified proteins at each time point belong to eight functional categories. The altered expression patterns identified by 2-DE of transgelin and S100-A11 were verified by Western blot. Transgelin and protein S100-A11 may be candidates for protein biomarkers in the bladder healing process after SCI.</P>
야생 효모 Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y28을 이용하여 제조한 참다래-대봉감 혼합과실주의 이화학적 특성 및 향기성분

본 연구에서는 야생 효모 Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y28을 이용하여 참다래-대봉감 혼합과실주 제조를 위해 과즙의 효소 처리 조건 확립, 참다래-대봉감 비율별 알코올 발효 특성 및 향기성분 분석을 조사하였다. 최적 효소 처리 조건은 참다래는 0.3%, 1시간이었고 대봉감은 0.3%, 3시간이었다. 참다래-대봉감 혼합과실주의 pH는 발효 후 3.69-3.77로 거의 변화가 없었고, 산도는 발효 후 증가하여 1.51-2.07%로 있었으나, 대봉감 첨가량이 증가할수록 산도는 낮았다. Brix 및 환원당은 발효 후 감소하여 각각 $8.8-9.6^{\circ}brix$ 및 6.07-6.90 g/L 있었다. 혼합과일주의 주요 유기산은 tartaric acid, malic acid 및 citric acid 있었고, 유리당 sucrose 및 glucose은 미량 검출되었다. 발효 후 수용성 phenolics 함량 감소하고 상대적으로 갈변도는 증가하여 각각 1.00-1.25 g/L 및 0.212-0.412 수준이었다. 주요 향기성분으로 ethyl acetate와 hydrazine, 1,1-dimethyl가 있으며 장미와 유사한 향을 가지는 phenylethyl alcohol 또한 모든 시료에서 검출되었다. 관능평가 결과, 참다래:대봉감(7:3) 혼합과실주가 다른 비율 혼합과실주보다는 기호성이 약간 우수하였다. The study was aimed to investigate the mixing ratio of kiwi and persimmon juices for the production of good quality wine by Saccharomyces cerevisiae Y28. Firstly, the optimum condition of rapidase treatment for the kiwi and persimmon juices was established, thereafter various mixing ratio (10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, 5:5) of kiwi and persimmon was investigated regarding physiochemical properties and flavor compounds of wine. As the result, the optimum conditions were obtained as 0.3% rapidase for 1 h in kiwi and 0.3% rapidase for 3 h in persimmon. According to higher ration of persimmon, the pH of wines increased from 3.69 to 3.77, while the acidity of wines decreased from 2.07% to 1.51% at 14 days fermentation. The ranges of brix and reducing sugar in wines were decreased which ranges around 9.6 to 8.8 and 6.07 to 6.90 g/L, respectively, after fermentation. Major organic acid in wines were identified as tartaric acid, malic acid, and citric acid. A small amount of free sugar such as sucrose and glucose were detected in wines, but fructose was completely absent. The soluble phenolic contents were decreased that ranges around 1.00 to 1.25 g/L, in contrast, browning degree were increased ranges around 0.212 to 0.412 after fermentation. The major flavor components were identified as ethyl acetate and hydrazine, and 1,1-dimethyl. Importantly, phenylethyl alcohol was detected from the all wines that have a typical rose like flavor. But sensory test results and preference of kiwi-persimmon (7:3) mixing wine was better than the other wines.
