        Designing Effective Virtual Training

        Objective: The aim of this study is to investigate how to design effective virtual reality-based training (i.e., virtual training) in maritime safety and to present methods for enhancing interface fidelity by employing immersive interaction and 3D user interface (UI) design. Background: Emerging virtual reality technologies and hardware enable to provide immersive experiences to individuals. There is also a theory that the improvement of fidelity can improve the training efficiency. Such a sense of immersion can be utilized as an element for realizing effective training in the virtual space. Method: As an immersive interaction, we implemented gesture-based interaction using leap motion and Myo armband type sensors. Hand gestures captured from both sensors are used to interact with the virtual appliance in the scenario. The proposed 3D UI design is employed to visualize appropriate information for tasks in training. Results: A usability study to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed method has been carried out. As a result, the usability test of satisfaction, intuitiveness of UI, ease of procedure learning, and equipment understanding showed that virtual trainingbased exercise was superior to existing training. These improvements were also independent of the type of input devices for virtual training. Conclusion: We have shown through experiments that the proposed interaction design results are more efficient interactions than the existing training method. The improvement of interface fidelity through intuitive and immediate feedback on the input device and the training information improve user satisfaction with the system, as well as training efficiency. Application: Design methods for an effective virtual training system can be applied to other areas by which trainees are required to do sophisticated job with their hands.

      • Efficient mobile AR technology using scalable recognition and tracking based on server-client model

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Advancements in mobile devices and vision technology have enabled mobile Augmented Reality (AR) to be serviced in real-time using natural features. However, in viewing AR while moving around in the real world, users often encounter new and diverse target objects. Whether the AR system is scalable to the number of target objects is a very crucial issue for mobile AR services in the real world. This scalability, however, has been severely limited because of the small internal storage capacity and memory of the mobile devices. In this paper, a new framework is proposed that achieves scalability for mobile AR. The scalability is achieved with a bag-of-visual-words based recognition module on the server side that is connected to the clients, which are mobile devices, through a conventional Wi-Fi network. On the client side, the coarse-to-fine tracking module enables robust tracking performance with natural features in real-time. In this study, we optimized modules in mobile devices for expediting pose-tracking processing and simultaneously enabled 3D rendering and animation in real-time. We also propose an efficient recognition method in which metadata are provided by the sensors of mobile devices. In the experiment, it takes approximately 0.2s for the cold start of an AR service initiated on a 10K object database with a recognition accuracy of 99.87%, which should be acceptable for a variety of real-world mobile AR applications.</P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P><P><ce:figure id='f0095'></ce:figure></P><P><B>Highlights</B></P><P>► A new mobile AR framework with scalability and accurate tracking is proposed. ► Enhanced recognition performance (accuracy, speed) is achieved with metadata retrieval. ► To verify the scalability, we did experiments using general object and CD DB (each 10K).</P>

      • 지능형 환경을 위한 실시간 신체부위 추적 시스템 : 조명 및 복장변화에 강인한 신체부위 추적 시스템

        We proposed a robust body part tracking system for intelligent environment that will not limit freedom of users. Unlike any previous gesture recognizer, we upgraded the generality of the system by creating the ability the ability to recognize details, such as, the ability to detect the difference between long sleeves and short sleeves. For the precise each body part tracking, we obtained the image of hands, head, and feet separately from a single camera, and when detecting each body part, we separately chose the appropriate feature for certain parts. Using a calibrated camera, we transferred 2D detected body parts into the 3D posture. In the experimentation, this system showed advanced hand tracking performance in real time(50fps). 본 논문은 지능형 환경에 적합하도록 사용자의 자유를 제한하지 않는 실시간 신체 부위 추적 시스템의 구현에 관해 다룬다. 본 시스템은 기존의 신체 부위 추적 시스템과 달리 소매의 길이에 제약 없이 긴 소매, 반 소매 모두 인식할 수 있도록 함으로써 시스템의 generality 를 높였다. 정확한 인식을 위하여, 한 대의 카메라에서 얻어진 이미지에서 손, 머리, 발의 신체 부위를 따로 검출하고 각 신체 부위를 검출할 때 해당 부위에 적합한 특징점을 따로 선택하여 검출하였다. 검출된 2 차원의 신체 부위들을 calibrate 된 카메라를 이용하여 3 차원 자세로 변환하였다. 본 시스템은 실험을 통해 실시간(50fps) 성능으로 향상된 손 추적 성능을 보여주었다.

        모바일 증강현실을 위한 실시간 센서 융합 선 그래프 기반 장면 분석 기법

        As mobile devices such as smartphones and smartglasses are enhanced in computational power and memory, mobile augmented reality technology for on-demand indoor service has become significantly important. Developing scene analysis for estimating geometric structures, e.g., ceiling, wall, ground, from an image of unstructured and untrained environment is mendatory. In this paper, we propose a real-time sensor-aided scene analysis based on line graph for mobile augmented reality. For real-time performance, we present line graph based analysis which is efficiently constructed and processed and finds optimal line combination by belief propagation. The proposed method shows 2.338 average pixel error in the simulation and accurate plane estimation result with real-world dataset. The average processing time of the proposed method, which was 45.87 ms, demonstrates the real-time performance. The resulting plane hypotheses can be used for 3D reconstruction, scene tracking, and context recognition.

        NaOCl 처리 농도 및 시간에 따른 희귀식물 자란(Bletilla striata Rchb.f.)의 종자 발아 및 활력 연구

        This study was conducted to examine the vitality of Bletilla striata Rchb.f. seed treated with different concentrations sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl) for different lengths of time. This study also examined the effect of NaOCl treatment times and concentrations on swelling formation and seed germination of B. striata seed. The non-treated B. striata seed had the highest survival rate (82.7%) Treatment with more than 1.5% NaOCl negatively affected the seed survival rate, as compared to concentrations of less than 1%. The swelling formation and seed germination percentages were highest (90.1% and 94.1%, respectively) when seeds were treated with 0.5% NaOCl for 20 min. These results can be used as important basic data for the growth and restoration of B. striata and further suggest the possibility of individual restoration in habitats.

        The objectives of this paper are to study the absorption characteristics of NH3 bubbles in a binary nanoemulsion and to quantify the effect of concentrations of oil-droplet and surfactants on the bubble absorption performance. C₁₂E₄ and Tween20 are used as the surfactants and n-decane oil is added into NH₃/H₂O solution to make the binary nanoemulsion. The initial concentration of NH₃/H₂O solution. The concentrations of oil and the ratio of the surfactant are considered as the key parameters. Concentration of NH₃/H₂O(NH₃ weight%) ranges 0, 8 and 14.3 wt%. The concentration of oil ranges 0.1, 0.5, 1.0 and 2.0 vol. % and the ratios of oil and surfactant are 4:1 and 8:1. The absorption rates are calculated by measuring the inlet and outlet mass flow rates for a given time period. The droplet sizes in the binary nanoemulsion are measured by the particle size analyzer (ELS-Z, OTSUKA ELECTRONICS). It is found that the effective absorption ratio for 2.0 vol% oil and 14.3 wt% NH₃/H₂O becomes 17% higher than that for the base fluid.

      • 긴급상황에 대한 가상현실 선원 훈련 플랫폼

        본 논문은 국내외 해양사고 원인의 60-80%에 해당하는 인적과실을 예방하기 위하여 긴급상황에 대한 가상현실 선원 훈련 플랫폼을 제안한다. 제안된 훈련 플랫폼은 가상현실 기술을 통해 긴급 상황 내 절차 숙달을 위한 상호작용 방법과 가상 선박 환경 내에서 군중 에이전트를 제어하는 군중 제어 방법을 제공한다. 제안된 훈련 플랫폼의 상호작용 방법은 훈련 몰입도를 높이기 위하여 음성인식과 행동인식을 사용한다. 군중 제어는 사회적 특성을 반영한 에이전트의 행동모델을 적용하여 자연스러운 시뮬레이션을 제공한다. 제안된 훈련 플랫폼의 효율성을 실험하기 위해 선박 내 화재 상황에 대한 가상 훈련 시나리오를 standalone 훈련 플랫폼으로써 구현하였다. This paper presents a VR-simulated sailor training platform for emergency in order to prevent a human error that causes 60~80% of domestic/abroad marine accidents. Through virtual reality technology, the proposed platform provides an interaction method for proficiency of procedures in emergency, and a crowd control method for controlling crowd agents in a virtual ship environment. The interaction method uses speech recognition and gesture recognition to enhance the immersiveness and efficiency of the training. The crowd control method provides natural simulations of crowd agents by applying a behavior model that reflects the social behavior model of human. To examine the efficiency of the proposed platform, a prototype whose virtual training scenario describes the outbreak of fire in a ship was implemented as a standalone system.
