        LncRNA TMPO-AS1 promotes esophageal squamous cell carcinoma progression by forming biomolecular condensates with FUS and p300 to regulate TMPO transcription

        Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) is one of the most life- and health-threatening malignant diseases worldwide, especially in China. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) have emerged as important regulators of tumorigenesis and tumor progression. However, the roles and mechanisms of lncRNAs in ESCC require further exploration. Here, in combination with a small interfering RNA (siRNA) library targeting specific lncRNAs, we performed MTS and Transwell assays to screen functional lncRNAs that were overexpressed in ESCC. TMPO-AS1 expression was significantly upregulated in ESCC tumor samples, with higher TMPOAS1 expression positively correlated with shorter overall survival times. In vitro and in vivo functional experiments revealed that TMPO-AS1 promotes the proliferation and metastasis of ESCC cells. Mechanistically, TMPO-AS1 bound to fused in sarcoma (FUS) and recruited p300 to the TMPO promoter, forming biomolecular condensates in situ to activate TMPO transcription in cis by increasing the acetylation of histone H3 lysine 27 (H3K27ac). Targeting TMPO-AS1 led to impaired ESCC tumor growth in a patient-derived xenograft (PDX) model. We found that TMPO-AS1 is required for cell proliferation and metastasis in ESCC by promoting the expression of TMPO, and both TMPO-AS1 and TMPO might be potential biomarkers and therapeutic targets in ESCC.

      • Chinese SOEs and the Completion of Cross-border M&As: The Moderating Role of M&A Experience

        Purpose – The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationships among Chinese state-owned enterprises (SOEs), previous M&A experience, and the probability of deal completion in cross-border mergers and acquisitions (CBMAs). Since Chinese SOEs tend to be recognized by host countries as agents of their home country government, this study argues that SOEs will face difficulties in completing CBMA deals. However, the study expects that these difficulties may vary depending on whether the firm has previous M&A experience because firms can gain the knowledge and capabilities necessary to implement subsequent M&As successfully from past M&A experience. Design/methodology – To investigate our argument, we conduct a logistic regression using a sample of 363 CBMA deals from 304 Chinese publicly listed firms during 2007 to 2017. We used SOEs as an independent variable, experience of domestic and foreign M&As as moderating variables, respectively, and CBMA deal completion as the dependent variable. Findings – The study shows a negative and significant relationship between Chinese SOEs and the completion likelihood of CBMA deals. We find that this negative relationship is strengthened when the firm had prior domestic M&A experience, whereas foreign M&A experience alleviated the negative relationship. Originality/value – The issue of government ownership has remained unclear since government intervention has both advantages and disadvantages in pursuing CBMAs. Our findings support literature that argues Chinese SOEs face legitimacy concerns in the host countries, thereby lowering their CBMA deal completion likelihood. Furthermore, the study enriches the literature by identifying different moderating effects of domestic and foreign M&A experience on the negative relationship between SOEs and CBMA deal completion.

        Z-scheme Bi2O3/Bi/ZnIn2S4 photocatalyst for enhancing the removal performance of Cr(VI), 2,4-dinitrophenol and tetracycline

        Construction of heterojunctions is conventionally regarded as the prevailing technique to enhance solardrivenphotocatalytic water splitting and photodegradation of pollutants. Herein, we report a noveldesign of a ternary Bi2O3/Bi/ZnIn2S4 system, which was facilely synthesized to satisfy these stringent criteriafor sunlight photocatalytic removal of organic and ionic pollutants and hydrogen evolution. Bi2O3/Bi/ZnIn2S4 could degrade 2,4-dinitrophenol (94.6%), tetracycline (96.5%), and Cr6+ (96.3%) effectivelyunder visible light and give a hydrogen production rate of 482.5 lmolg1h1 under visible light. Based on first-principles calculations and electrochemical results, our system could be identified as aZ-scheme. Photocorrosion of the sulfide is prohibited while the catalytic capabilities are simultaneouslybenefited due to lowered bandgap in light harvesting, internal electric fields in charge separations, andsurface plasmonic resonance enhanced electron boost.

      • A State-of-art of Experimental Research and Calculated Models of Dowel-type Timber Connections in Fire

        Fire safety is one of the most significant issues for the design of mid-rise and high-rise timber structures. A large number of experimental tests were conducted during the last three decades to investigate the fire performance of the dowel-type timber connections. Many influenced parameters (e.g. the thickness of the side timber, the load ratio, the fasteners type etc.) were considered in those experiments. Relevant calculated models were proposed by previous researchers to estimate the fire resistance of the connections. In this study, a series of experimental programs of dowel-type connections in fire are collected. Then, empirical formulas proposed by EN 1995-1-2, Fire safety in timber buildings, and previous researchers are presented and analyzed. The accuracy of those formulas is checked by comparisons between the experimental data and estimated results. The collected experimental research and empirical formulas can be used as the reference for the fire design of dowel-type timber connections in the future.

      • Vibration characteristics of functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composite double-beams in thermal environments

        This paper presents an investigation on the free vibration characteristics of functionally graded nanocomposite double-beams reinforced by single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs). The double-beams coupled by an interlayer spring, resting on the elastic foundation with a linear layer and shear layer, and is simply supported in thermal environments. The SWCNTs gradient distributed in the thickness direction of the beam forms different reinforcement patterns. The materials properties of the functionally graded carbon nanotube-reinforced composites (FG-CNTRC) are estimated by rule of mixture. The first order shear deformation theory and Euler-Lagrange variational principle are employed to derive the motion equations incorporating the thermal effects. The vibration characteristics under several patterns of reinforcement are presented and discussed. We conducted a series of studies aimed at revealing the effects of the spring stiffness, environment temperature, thickness ratios and carbon nanotube volume fraction on the nature frequency.

      • Autophagy Inhibition Promotes Gambogic Acid-induced Suppression of Growth and Apoptosis in Glioblastoma Cells

        Objective: To investigate the effects of gambogic acid (GA) on the growth of human malignant glioma cells. Methods: U251MG and U87MG human glioma cell lines were treated with GA and growth and proliferation were investigated by MTT and colony formation assays. Cell apoptosis was analyzed by annexin V FITC/PI flow cytometry, mitochondrial membrane potential assays and DAPI nuclear staining. Monodansylcadaverine (MDC) staining and GFP-LC3 localisation were used to detect autophagy. Western blotting was used to investigate the molecular changes that occurred in the course of GA treatment. Results: GA treatment significantly suppressed cell proliferation and colony formation, induced apoptosis in U251 and U87MG glioblastoma cells in a time- and dose-dependent manner. GA treatment also lead to the accumulation of monodansylcadaverine (MDC) in autophagic vacuoles, upregulated expressions of Atg5, Beclin 1 and LC3-II, and the increase of punctate fluorescent signals in glioblastoma cells pre-transfected with GFP-tagged LC3 plasmid. After the combination treatment of autophagy inhitors and GA, GA mediated growth inhibition and apoptotic cell death was further potentiated. Conclusion: Our results suggested that autophagic responses play roles as a self-protective mechanism in GA-treated glioblastoma cells, and autophagy inhibition could be a novel adjunctive strategy for enhancing chemotherapeutic effect of GA as an anti-malignant glioma agent.

        Analysis of Peripheral B Cell Subsets in Patients With Allergic Rhinitis

        Purpose: Recent evidence suggests that B cells can both promote and inhibit the development and progression of allergic disease. However, the characteristics of B cell subsets in patients with allergic rhinitis (AR) have not been well documented. This study aimed to analyze the characteristics of B cell subsets in the peripheral blood of AR patients. Methods: Forty-seven AR patients and 54 healthy controls were enrolled in this study, and the B cell subsets in peripheral blood of all subjects were analyzed by flow cytometry. Moreover, the serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) and IgE concentrations secreted into the cultured peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were measured by using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results: We found the peripheral blood of AR patients contained higher percentages of memory B cells, plasma cells, and CD19+CD24hiCD27+ regulatory B cells (Bregs) than those of age-matched healthy controls (P<0.05), while the percentages of naïve B cells and CD19+CD24hiCD38hi Bregs were significantly lower in AR patients than in healthy individuals (P<0.05). In addition, the serum total IgE and IgE concentrations secreted into the cultured PBMCs were elevated in AR patients than in the healthy controls (P<0.05). Conclusions: Our findings indicate that AR patients were characterized by increase in terminally differentiated memory B cells or plasma cells and decreases in CD19+CD24hiCD38hi Breg cells in the peripheral blood.

      • 중국 상장기업의 여성이사와 여성경영자가 사회적 책임 활동에 미치는 영향

        본 연구에서는 중국 상장기업의 여성이사와 여성경영자가 사회적책임활동에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 패널 자료를 구축하고 실증분석을 하였다. 실증분석의 주요 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 중국 상장기업에서 여성이사 비율은 기부금 지출과 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 중국 기업에서 여성이사는 공동체적 가치와 관련 분야의 업무 전문성을 바탕으로 사회적책임활동에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 설명된다. 둘째, 여성사외이사 비율은 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 여성사외이사는 사외이사로서의 평판을 유지하기 위해 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 설명된다. 셋째, 여성동사장은 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 확인되었다. 기업의 최고경영자로서 여성동사장은 관계 중심적 리더십을 바탕으로 사회 지향적 관점에서 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 설명된다. 넷째, 여성경영진 비율은 기부금과 사회적책임활동의 성과에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 중국 기업에서 여성경영진은 담당 직무 특성을 기반으로 사회적책임활동에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 설명된다. 그러나 이러한 실증결과는 중국기업의 소유제 유형에 따라 차이가 존재하므로 실증결과의 일반화에 주의가 요구된다. 본 연구의 실증결과를 종합하면 중국 기업에서 여성이사와 여성경영자는 사회적책임활동에 긍정적인 영향을 미치고 있는 것으로 평가된다. This study examines the impact of female directors and female managers on corporate social responsibility in Chinese listed firms. The empirical findings are as follows: First, the effects of female directors’ ratio on corporate social responsibility are positive in terms of corporate philanthropic expenditures as well as performance of corporate social responsbility, suggesting that female directors promote corporate socially responsible business practices due to their job backgrounds as well as communal values. Second, the effects of female independent directors’ ratio on corporate social responsibility are positive, suggesting that female independent directors play monitoring roles in promoting socially responsible business practices in order to preserve their job reputations. Third, the effects of female chairmen on corporate social responsibility are also positive, implying that female chairmen have positive influence on promoting socially responsible business practices due to their high level of social orientations as well as relation based leadership. Finally the effects of female managers’ratio on corporate social responsibility are positive in terms of corporate philanthropic expenditures as well as performance of corporate social responsibility, suggesting that female managers have promoted corporate socially responsible business practices due to their job expertise. However, the empirical results are to some extent dependent on firms’ ownership identity between state-owned and private-owned. The results generally imply that the presence of female directors in the board of directors as well as female managers in top management team positively influence firms’ involvement and expenditures in socially responsible business practices in Chinese listed firms.

        중국기업 여성이사가 기부금 지출에 미치는 영향

        본 논문에서는 중국기업에서 여성이사가 기부금 지출에 미치는 영향을 분석하기 위해 2004년에서 2019년도까지의 3,256 기업의 26,512 건의 관측 자료를 수집하여 불균형 패널분석을 실시하였다. 실증분석 결과, 중국 상장기업에서 여성이사 비중은 기부금 지출에 정(+)의 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 본 실증결과는 이타적이고 높은 공동체적 의식을 갖는 여성이사가 기업의 자선활동으로서 기부금 지출을 증가시킨다는 논의를 지지하는 것으로 해석된다. 한편 이러한 여성이사와 기부금 지출 간의 정(+)의 관계는 국유기업에서는 유의미한 반면 민영기업에서는 유의하지 않아 중국기업에서 여성이사가 기부금 지출에 미치는 영향은 기업의 소유 유형에 따라 달라질 수 있음을 시사한다. Using 26,512 observations from 3,265 firms in Chinese listed during 2004 to 2019, the study examines the impact of female directors on corporate philanthropic giving, based on literature of cognitive psychology and gender socialization theory that women are more altruistic as well as communal than men, and upper echelon that that top managers’ value and attitude affect their decision making. The major findings as follow; First, there is a positive relationship between the ratio of female directors and the extent of corporate philanthropic giving in terms of the ratio of value of company donations to assets, suggesting that female directors promote socially responsible practices due to their benevolent as well as communal traits. Second, the positive relationship between the existences of female directors and the extent of corporate philanthropic giving are significant in state-owned firms while it is not in private-owned firms, implying that the the effects of female directors on corporate decision making may be restrained by the type of firm’s ownership.
