Associations of Pulmonary Function with Dementia and Depression in an Older Korean Population

Objective-Previous studies reported an association between pulmonary function and cognitive function. However, not much has been investigated in this regard concerning dementia in a community population, taking depression into account. We aimed to examine the associations of pulmonary function with dementia and depression in a community-dwelling elderly population. Methods-A total of 1,038 participants were evaluated for dementia and depression using the Korean version of the Geriatric Mental State Schedule B3 (GMS B3-K), the Community Screening Interview for Dementia-Korean version (CSID-K) and a modified 10-item Word List Learning from the Consortium to Establish a Registry of Alzheimer’s Disease (CERAD). Pulmonary function was measured as forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1) from a forced expiratory maneuver. Results-Prevalence rates of dementia and depression were 11.0% and 10.4%, respectively. Individuals who were diagnosed with dementia manifested a lower mean FEV1, as compared to those without dementia after adjusting for potential confounders, including disability and depression [OR=1.34 (1.05–1.72)]. Following gender-stratified analysis, the association was only statistically significant in women [OR=1.40 (1.04–1.89)]. The association between depression and mean FEV1 was less significant compared to dementia [OR=1.32 (1.10–1.58)]. However, the association was no longer significant after adjusting for age and years of education. No association was significant in the gender-stratified analysis. Conclusion-Decreased pulmonary function was associated with dementia status only in an older female Korean population. Pulmonary function and depression were not significantly associated in either gender.

In this study, probabilistic fracture analyses of high pressure pipe serviced at high temperature were performed using Monte Carlo simulation method. Statistical analyses of material data obtained by previous experiments were conducted to determine probability density function of major variables. Distributions of major variables were reflected in Monte Carlo simulation method. Creep crack growth life assessment of a elliptic surface crack in pressurized pipe was conducted and failure probability as a function of time was determined. Sensitivity analyses of input variables were also conducted to define the most important variable in the analysis.

<P>Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated polymer <B>PDTDPPQT</B> was synthesized and was used to perform epitaxial polymer crystal growth on removable 1,3,5-trichlorobenzene crystallite templates. A thin-film transistor (TFT) was successfully fabricated in well-grown large spherulites of <B>PDTDPPQT</B>. The charge carrier mobility along the radial direction of the spherulites was measured to be 5.46–12.04 cm<SUP>2</SUP> V<SUP>–1</SUP> s<SUP>–1</SUP>, which is significantly higher than that in the direction perpendicular to the radial direction. The dynamic response of charge transport was also investigated by applying a pulsed bias to TFTs loaded with a resistor (∼20 MΩ). The charge-transport behaviors along the radial direction and perpendicular to the radial direction were investigated by static and dynamic experiments through a resistor-loaded (RL) inverter. The RL inverter made of <B>PDTDPPQT</B>-based TFT operates well, maintaining a fairly high switching voltage ratio (<I>V</I><SUB>out</SUB><SUP>ON</SUP>/<I>V</I><SUB>out</SUB><SUP>OFF</SUP>) at a relatively high frequency when the source-drain electrodes are aligned parallel to the radial direction.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/aamick/2015/aamick.2015.7.issue-24/acsami.5b02265/production/images/medium/am-2015-02265y_0009.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/am5b02265'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>
A Robust and Low-Complexity Timing Synchronization Algorithm for ADSRC System

In this paper, a robust, low-complexity timing synchronization algorithm suitable for 5.9 GHz Dedicated' Short Range Communications(DSRC) system is proposed. The proposed method uses cross-correlation technique to detect the starting point of both a short training symbol and the guard interval of the first long training symbol. This allows the proposed algorithm to have low-complex architecture. Simulation results show that the proposed algorithm is robust and efficient in high-mobility environments and low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) conditions. WiBro 는 3세대 통신에서 4세대 통신으로 넘어가는 단계의 이동 중 통신이 가능한 무선광대역 인터넷으로 무선랜(LAN) 과 휴대폰의 중간 영역에 위치한다. 인터넷 자료를 주고 받으며, 높은 속도에서도 안정정을 보장해야 되므로 채널에 강한 ECC(Error Con-ecting Code)의 중요성이 커지게 되었다. 이에 WiBro에서는 Convolution urbo Code(CTC)을 사용하고 있으며, Hybrid-ARQ와 같은 유동적 재전송 Code 을 사용하였다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 Powerful 한 Channel Codec 과 TDD 방식의 WiBro 규격을 만족하기 위해서 기존의 SOVA algorithm을 변형하되, H/W complexity을 줄여, Low power을 가능하게 하는 구조를 제안한다.
