Validation of the Korean version of the 16-Item Prodromal Questionnaire in a Non-Help-Seeking College Population

        SungWan Kim,YoungChul Chung,YoungShin Kang,JaeKyeong Kim,JiEun Jang,Min Jhon,JuYeon Lee,JaeMin Kim,IlSeon Shin,JinSang Yoon 대한신경정신의학회 2018 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.15 No.2

Objective-To examine the reliability and validity of the Korean version of the 16-item Prodromal Questionnaire (KPQ-16) in nonhelp-seeking university students. Methods-aAmong 2,246 university students participated in the initial screening, 257 subjects with KPQ-16 scores ≥4 were interviewed. The criteria for ultra-high risk (UHR) of psychosis of the Comprehensive Assessment of At-Risk Mental States (CAARMS) were the gold standard for diagnosis. An exploratory modified version of the questionnaire (mKPQ-16), to which three items from the Eppendorf Schizophrenia Inventory were added, was also used to compensate for items on thought and cognitive problems. Result-Seventeen subjects met the CAARMS criteria for UHR of psychosis. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) was highest for the mKPQ-16 total score (AUROC=0.831, p<0.001). The use of cutoff total scores of 7 for the mKPQ- 16 and 6 for the KPQ-16 resulted in the best balance of sensitivity (76.5% and 64.7%, respectively) and specificity (75.4% and 71.2%, respectively). Conclusion-The Korean versions of the PQ-16 are good instruments for screening for psychosis risk in university students. This validation of a questionnaire version with a small number of items may make it feasible to screen large numbers of young adults in the community.

Design and Methodology of the Korean Early Psychosis Cohort Study

        SungWan Kim,BongJu Lee,JungJin Kim,JeChun Yu,KyuYoung Lee,SeungHee Won,SeungHwan Lee,SeungHyun Kim,ShiHyun Kang,YoungChul Chung 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.1

The present study details the rationale and methodology of the Korean Early Psychosis Cohort Study (KEPS), which is a clinical cohort investigation of first episode psychosis patients from a Korean population. The KEPS is a prospective naturalistic observational cohort study that follows the participants for at least 2 years. This study includes patients between 18 and 45 years of age who fulfill the criteria for one of schizophrenia spectrum and other psychotic disorders according to the diagnostic criteria of DSM-5. Early psychosis is defined as first episode patients who received antipsychotic treatment for fewer than 4 consecutive weeks after the onset of illness or stabilized patients in the early stages of the disorder whose duration of illness was less than 2 years from the initiation of antipsychotic treatment. The primary outcome measures are treatment response, remission, recovery, and relapse. Additionally, several laboratory tests are conducted and a variety of objective and subjective psychiatric measures assessing early life trauma, lifestyle pattern, and social and cognitive functioning are administered. This long-term prospective cohort study may contribute to the development of early intervention strategies and the improvement of long-term outcomes in patients with schizophrenia.

Development of a Biomarker-Based Diagnostic Algorithm for Posttraumatic Syndrome after Physical Injury: Design of the BioPTS Study

        JuWan Kim,HeeJu Kang,KyungYeol Bae,SungWan Kim,HyunKyong Oh,MinGon Kim,JaeMin Kim 대한신경정신의학회 2017 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.14 No.4

Severe physical injury is a leading cause of posttraumatic syndrome (PTS). This is to develop a biomarker-based diagnostic algorithm for posttraumatic syndrome (BioPTS) study. This is a 2-year longitudinal cohort study assessing patients who were hospitalized beginning in 2015 at Chonnam National University Hospital in Gwangju, Korea, after experiencing severe physical injuries. Baseline evaluations were made during the acute phase (within 1 month) of the physical injury and included extensive information on sociodemographic and clinical variables as well as a list of biomarkers. All participants will be followed up for 2 years, and the diagnostic and predictive validities of various biomarkers for PTS will be estimated. The BioPTS study will develop the most accurate models for the diagnosis and prediction of PTS, and will contribute to existing research regarding the complex relationships between severe physical injury and psychological issues.

Design and Methodology for the Korean Observational and Escitalopram Treatment Studies of Depression in Acute Coronary Syndrome: K-DEPACS and EsDEPACS

        JaeMin Kim,KyungYeol Bae,HeeJu Kang,SungWan Kim,IlSeon Shin,YoungJoon Hong,JuHan Kim,HeeYoung Shin,YoungKeun Ahn,JongKeun Kim,MyungHo Jeong,JinSang Yoon 대한신경정신의학회 2014 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.11 No.1

Depression is common after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), adversely affecting cardiac course and prognosis. There have been only a few evidence-based treatment options for depression in ACS. Accordingly, we planned the Korean Depression in ACS (K-DEPACS) study, which investigated depressive disorders in patients with ACS using a naturalistic prospective design, and the Escitalopram for DEPACS (EsDEPACS) trial, which assessed the efficacy and safety of escitalopram for treating major or minor depression in patients with ACS. Participants in the K-DEPACS study were consecutively recruited from patients with ACS who were recently hospitalized at Chonnam National University Hospital, Gwangju, South Korea. Diagnoses were confirmed by coronary angiography from 2005. Data on depressive and cardiovascular characteristics were obtained at 2 weeks, 3 months, 12 months, and every 6 months thereafter following the index ACS admission. The K-DEPACS participants who met the DSM-IV criteria for major or minor depressive disorder were randomly assigned to groups in the 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled EsDEPACS trial beginning in 2007. The outcome of treatments for depressive and other psychiatric symptoms, issues related to safety, including general adversity, and cardiovascular factors were assessed. The K-DEPACS study can significantly contribute to research on the complex relationships between depression and ACS. The results of the EsDEPACS trial provide an additional treatment option for clinicians treating these patients.

Longitudinal Impact of Depression on Quality of Life in Stroke Patients

        EunSong Kim,JuWan Kim,HeeJu Kang,KyungYeol Bae,SungWan Kim,JoonTae Kim,ManSeok Park,KiHyun Cho,JaeMin Kim 대한신경정신의학회 2018 PSYCHIATRY INVESTIGATION Vol.15 No.2

Objective-Stroke is associated with significant long-term morbidity and poor quality of life (QOL). Depression is one of the most common complications after stroke and has been associated with QOL cross-sectionally. We investigated the longitudinal impact of depression in the acute phase of stroke on QOL 1 year after stroke. Methods-In total, 423 patients were evaluated 2 weeks after stroke, and 288 (68%) were followed 1 year later. QOL was assessed using the World Health Organization Quality of Life-Abbreviated form (WHOQOL-BREF) at baseline and follow-up. Depression was diagnosed according to Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-IV criteria; demographic and clinical characteristics data, including stroke severity, were obtained at baseline. The longitudinal associations of post-stroke depression (PSD) at baseline with QOL across two evaluation points were assessed using a repeated-measures analysis of variance. Results-The WHOQOL-BREF scores were significantly and persistently lower 1 year after stroke in patients with PSD at baseline compared with those without PSD at baseline independent of demographic and clinical characteristics, including stroke severity. Conclusion-PSD in the acute phase of stroke is an independent predictor of QOL in both the acute and chronic phases of stroke. Our findings underscore the importance of evaluating depression in the acute phase of stroke.

A Study on the VR Goggle-based Vision System for Robotic Surgery

        Young Gyun Kim,Gyeongbin Mun,Byoungjun Jeon,Jong Hyeon Lee,Dan Yoon,Byeong Soo Kim,Myungjoon Kim,Seong-Ho Kong,Kyu Eun Lee,Chang Wook Jeong,Minwoo Cho,Sungwan Kim 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2022 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.20 No.9

Robot-assisted surgery (RAS) using the da Vinci surgical system (dVSS) has been widely performed owing to its high-definition stereoscopic visualization and improved maneuverability, which has been developed from minimally invasive surgery. However, there was motivation to resolve the chronic fatigue suffered by surgeons because of stereo viewer, the vision system of the dVSS. Reflecting the clinical opinions, a virtual reality (VR) goggle was proposed to enhance the convenience by replacing the stereo viewer, and its applicability was investigated. Based on the da Vinci research kit, validation of the VR goggle was performed by analyzing the condition of its use and implementing the performance assessment. In addition, user evaluations, such as performance analysis, questionnaire surveys, and ergonomic analysis, were conducted to determine the difference in the performance and satisfaction between the stereo viewer and VR goggle. Following the IRB approval, a retrospective analysis of the results was performed. Based on the comparison between the vision systems, the VR goggle was evaluated positively by the surgeons and novices. Satisfaction with the ergonomic properties of the VR goggle averaged 3.9 on a five-point Likert scale, and there was no significant difference in the performance when using the VR goggle and stereo viewer in both groups. Adopting the VR goggle, the volume of the vision system could be decreased by 87.6%. Considering that the VR goggle was better than the stereo viewer in terms of satisfaction and ergonomic analysis with analogous performance, it has the main contribution that the VR goggle can be a promising candidate. as a new vision baseline to research the enhancements of the RAS platform in further studies.

      • In Silico Evaluation of Glucose Control Protocols for Critically Ill Patients

        Lee, Jung Chan,Kim, Myeungseon,Choi, Ka Ram,Oh, Tae Jung,Kim, Min Young,Cho, Young Min,Kim, Kyuseok,Kim, Hee Chan,Kim, Sungwan IEEE 2012 IEEE Transactions on Biomedical Engineering Vol.59 No.1

This letter presents an in silico evaluation method of glucose control protocols for critically ill patients with hyperglycemia. Although various glucose control protocols were introduced and investigated in clinical trials, development and validation of a novel glucose control protocol for critically ill patients require too much time and resources in clinical evaluation. We employed a virtual patient model of the critically ill patient with hyperglycemia and evaluated the clinically investigated glucose control protocols in a computational environment. The three-day simulation results presented the time profiles of glucose and insulin concentrations, the amount of enteral feed and intravenous bolus of glucose, and the intravenous insulin infusion rate. The hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia index, blood glucose concentrations, insulin doses, intravenous glucose infusion rates, and glucose feed rates were compared between different protocols. It is shown that a similar hypoglycemia incidence exists in simulation and clinical results. We concluded that this in silico simulation method using a virtual patient model could be useful for predicting hypoglycemic incidence of novel glucose control protocols for critically ill patients, prior to clinical trials.

      • Bimetallic Gold−Silver Nanorods Produce Multiple Surface Plasmon Bands

Kim, Sungwan,Kim, Seong Kyu,Park, Sungho American Chemical Society 2009 JOURNAL OF THE AMERICAN CHEMICAL SOCIETY - Vol.131 No.24

The optical properties of two-component nanorods (NRs) consisting of Au and Ag blocks were investigated. The overall optical properties of the nanorods were tailored by controlling block length. We observed two independent transverse modes in the Au and Ag blocks. Depending on the relative fraction of Au and Ag blocks, the intensity of the transverse modes varied without noticeable peak shifts. However, the strong intraparticle surface plasmon coupling between Au and Ag blocks resulted in the collective appearance of longitudinal LSP modes, including higher-order modes. This experimental observation suggests that the free electrons in Au and Ag blocks oscillate in a coherent fashion along the long axis of NRs, while there is no significant interaction in the free electron oscillation along the short axis of NRs.

      • Does satellite television programing satisfy ethiopian secondary school students?

        SungWan Kim,Gebeyehu Bogale APEC국제교육협력원 2015 Asia-Pacific Cybereducation Journal Vol.11 No.1

The Ethiopian development plans have dealt with the education sector as a key strategic pillar. There have been a lot of educational efforts. In particular, to cope with a lack of qualified teachers, lack of good teaching models, and remote rural regions separated from educational benefits, the Ethiopian Ministry of Education has made efforts to utilize educational media, such as satellite TV programing, to improve the quality of secondary education for last decade. However, there was lack of national investigation in the aspect of systemic evaluation to measure the effectiveness of the satellite TV programing. This study aims to investigate the actual practice and effectiveness of the satellite TV programing in Ethiopian secondary schools. To achieve the goal, one questionnaire was developed based on the CIPP model. Two secondary schools were selected and 228 students (Grade 9-12) participated in the survey. Data collected from them were utilized for descriptive & frequencies analysis, chi-square test, and multiple regression analysis. The results indicated that Ethiopian students utilizing satellite TV programing scored highly in the evaluation areas of context, input, process, and product of the program. It was also found that learning demand, learning content, and class management were factors affecting the satisfaction in the satellite TV programing. These findings suggested that satellite TV programing could play an important role in improving the quality of Ethiopian secondary education. As a conclusion, several educational and administrative strategies to improve the TV program were recommended.
