        The prevalence of PPNG among pretreated gonorrhea cases isolated at the STD clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul has been studied and reported annually since 1981. In 1991, 123 strains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 58(47.1%) were PPNG. In 1992, 98 starains of N.gonorrhoeae were isolated, among which 51(52.0%) were PPNG. In all, 109(49.3%) strains were found to be PPNG among 221 strains isolated between 1991-1992. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul showed increased tendency till 1989, thereafter, it has been stationary or slightly decreasing.

        The transplantation of organ, tissues or cells between individuals of different species has been of increasing interest in recent years because the use of animals as organ and tissue donors as a source of transplants would overcome the severe and worsening shortage of human organs available for transplantation. However, There are some major hurdles to the clinical application of xenotransplantation; the immunologic response of the recipient against donor, the physiology of the graft, and the possibility that a xenotransplant might transmit an infection from the source to the recipient. This review describes the unique aspects of the immunological barrier to transplanting organs from non-primates such as pigs into humans, focusing especially on the mechanisms which contribute to immunorecognition, physiology of the rejection and infectious hurdles to xenotransplantation. This communication might be applied to overcoming these hurdles and the possibility that genetic strategies might be used to expand the potential applications of xenotransplantation for the treatment of human disease.

        Robust Control of Robot Manipulators Using Inclusive and Enhanced Time Delay Control

        <P>Thanks to its simplicity and robustness, time delay control (TDC) has been recognized as a simple and yet effective alternative to robot model-based controls and/or intelligent controls. An inclusive and enhanced formulation of TDC for robust control of robot manipulators is presented in this paper. The proposed formulation consists of three intuitive terms: 1) time delay estimation (TDE), inherited from the original TDC, for cancellation of mostly continuous nonlinearities; 2) nonlinear desired error dynamics (DED) (i.e., a 'mass'-'nonlinear damper'-'nonlinear spring' system) injection term; and 3) a TDE error correction term based on a nonlinear sliding surface. The proposed TDC formulation has an inclusive structure. Depending on the gain/parameter set chosen, the proposed formulation can become Hsia's formulation, Jin's formulations including a type of terminal sliding mode control (SMC), an SMC with a switching signum function, or a novel enhanced formulation. Experimental comparisons were made using a programmable universal manipulator for assembly-type robot manipulator with various parameter sets for the proposed control. Among them, the highest position tracking accuracy was obtained by using a terminal sliding DED with a terminal sliding correction term.</P>

        Semi-solid forming is relatively new process for forming alloys in the semi-solid condition into near net produce. It relies on the behaviour of semi-solid slurrys in which the solid exists in the form of non-dendritic, spheroidal particles in a liquid matrix. Powder of the Al-20Si-5Fe-2Ni alloy was manufactured by spray forming and powder metallurgy, one of the rapid cooling method, and its microstructure became fine with several ㎛ size through the extrusion process. Spray forming and powder metallurgy are a rapid solidification process in which capable of producing materials consisted of very fine, uniform particles. Spray forming can be described as incorperating the advantages of powder metallurgy without disadvantages of degassing and consolidation. In this paper, the microstructural evolution of the P/M, S/F Al-20Si-5Fe-2Ni alloys and wrought Al 2024 alloys were investigated various heating conditions by high frequency induction heating system.

        현재 의료진단, 화학공정의 모니터링이나 환경공학적 감시 및 제어 등의 분야에서 사용되고 있는 기존의 센서는 고가이며 용적이 클 뿐만 아니라 분석시간이 길고 사용하기 까다로운 것 등 여러 가지 문제점이 있다. 또한 측정환경에 영향을 주지 않을 만큼 충분히 작으며 빠른 분석시간을 가진 센서를 필요로 하고 있다. 본 연구에서는 기존의 센서들의 난점을 극복할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 FET형 전해질(electrolyte : H^+, K^+, Ca^2+, Na^+)센서소자 및 분석 시스템, 용존가스(O_2, CO_2)센서의 개발을 중점적으로 추진하였으며, FET형 압력센서, 습도센서 둥의 개별 FET형 센서에 관한 기초연구도 병행하였다. The conventional sensors have many problems such as high cost, large dimension, long analysis time and troublesome handling to apply to the fields of medical diagnosis, monitoring of chemical process and environmental monitoring/control. The main objects of this research are to develope a new FET type electrolyte(H^+, K^+, Ca^2+, Na^+)sensors, analysis system, and dissoved gas(O_2, CO_2)senors that can overcome the problems of the conventional sensors, and parallel basic researches on FET. type sensors such as pressure and humidity are also in progress.

Recently various kinds of sensors have been developed, being applicated to their own purpose. There are lots of difficulties to apply them to measurements in which the real-time monitoring is required without disturbing the surrounding environment. FET type semiconductor sensors, fabricated by the semiconductor integration technologies, have many advantages for their miniaturization, standardization, mass-production and in vivo/in situ monitoring. They also hold a very proper configuration for multi-functional sensors or integrated smart sensors, and wide availability by forming various kinds of physical or chemical sensing materials onto their sensing gates.

      • FET형 반도체센서 및 시스템 개발

        기존의 센서들의 난점을 극복할 수 있는 새로운 형태의 FET형 전해질(electrolyte :H^+, K^+, Ca^2+, Na^+)센서소자 및 분석 시스템의 개발을 중점적으로 추진하였으며, FET형 포도당센서 및 압력센서의 개별 FET형 센서에 관한 연구도 병행하였다. FET형 전해질센서를 이용한 휴대용 전해질 측정기와 desktop형 4채널 전해질 분석기를 제작하였다. 또한 이 시스템을 소형화하기 위한 주문형 아날로그-디지탈 변환기 내장형 CMOS 프로세서를 설계하고 검증하였다. The main object of this research is to develope a new FET type electrolyte(H^+, K^+, Ca^2+, Na^+) sensors and analysis system which can overcome the problems of the conventional sensors. Parallel researches on FET type sensors such as glucose and pressure humidity are also in progress. A portable electrolyte meter and desktop 4-channel electrolyte analysis system is fabricated. A customized CMOS processor with built-in analog-to-digital converter is designed and verified.

      • Intranasal Delivery of RGD Motif-Containing Osteopontin Icosamer Confers Neuroprotection in the Postischemic Brain via αvβ3 Integrin Binding

        <P>Osteopontin (OPN) is a phosphorylated glycoprotein possessing an arginine-glycine-aspartate (RGD)-motif, which binds to several cell surface integrins and mediates a wide range of cellular processes. Inductions of OPN have been reported in the postischemic brain, and the neuroprotective effects of OPN have been demonstrated in animal models of stroke. In the present study, we showed a robust neuroprotective effect of RGD-containing icosamer OPN peptide (OPNpt20) in a rat model of focal cerebral ischemia (middle cerebral artery occlusion, MCAO). Intranasally administered OPNpt20 reduced mean infarct volume by 79.7 % compared to the treatment-na < ve MCAO control animals and markedly ameliorated neurological deficits. In addition, OPNpt20 significantly suppressed the inductions of iNOS and of inflammatory markers in postischemic brains and in primary microglial cultures, demonstrating anti-inflammatory effects. Administration of a mutant peptide, in which RGD was replaced by arginine-alanine-alanine (RAA), failed to suppress infarct volumes in MCAO animals and co-administration of OPNpt20 with anti-alpha(v)beta(3) integrin antibody failed to suppress iNOS induction in primary microglia culture, indicating that the RGD motif in OPNpt20 and endogenous alpha(v)beta(3) integrin play critical roles. Furthermore, pull-down assay revealed a direct binding between OPNpt20 and alpha(v)beta(3) integrin in primary microglia culture. Together, these results indicate that RGD-containing OPN icosamer has therapeutic potential in the postischemic brain and alpha(v)beta(3) integrin-mediated anti-inflammatory effect might be an underlying mechanism.</P>

      • Effective material parameter retrieval of anisotropic elastic metamaterials with inherent nonlocality

        <P>In this paper, the scattering (S-) parameter retrieval method is presented specifically for anisotropic elastic metamaterials; so far, no retrieval has been accomplished when elastic metamaterials exhibit fully anisotropic behavior. Complex constitutive property and intrinsic scattering behavior of elastic metamaterials make their characterization far more complicated than that for acoustic and electromagnetic metamaterials. In particular, elastic metamaterials generally exhibit anisotropic scattering behavior due to higher scattering modes associated with shear deformation. They also exhibit nonlocal responses to some degrees, which originate from strong multiple scattering interactions even in the long wavelength limit. Accordingly, the conventional S-parameter retrieval methods cannot be directly used for elastic metamaterials, because they determine only the diagonal components in effective tensor property. Also, the conventional methods simply use the analytic inversion formulae for the material characterization so that inherent nonlocality cannot be taken into account. To establish a retrieval method applicable to anisotropic elastic metamaterials, we propose an alternative S-parameter method to deal with full anisotropy of elastic metamaterials. To retrieve the whole effective anisotropic parameter, we utilize not only normal but also oblique wave incidences. For the retrieval, we first retrieve the ratio of the effective stiffness tensor to effective density and then determine the effective density. The proposed retrieval method is validated by characterizing the effective material parameters of various types of non-resonant anisotropic metamaterials. It is found that the whole effective parameters are retrieved consistently regardless of used retrieval conditions in spite of inherent nonlocality. Published by AIP Publishing.</P>
