      • '79학년도 본대학 신입생에 대한 학업성적 분석

        This study is one of the continuous work following the preceding analysis in 1977 which has suggested some data in the better improvement of evaluation methods on the students' achievement. Throughout the study, the academic records of 1,699 YJCT freshmen have been used as the reference materials. The main results obtained by this study have revealed the following: First, differences of standard in marking the test scores among the individual course subjects are still existing. Second, the achievement scores of the general selection students for the college admission are higher than the special selection students in the subjects of general education course such as Korean, Ethics, History, English and Mathematics, but contrary lower in the major subjects. Third, the scores for college admission including both Preliminary College Entrance Examination and High School Achievement are not so highly correlated with the college achievement scores as expected. Fourth, no distinct differences have been found according to the years passed after the high school graduation. The college academic achievement scores of the technical high school graduates, however, seemed to be influenced by the reputation of their parent schools. With the above results, it is suggested that a professional study to develop the better selection system of entrance examination, to improve the methods for instruction, evaluation and organization of the course subjects, and to render more effective student guidance should be continued.

      • 만성 C형 간염 환자에서 페그인터페론 알파2a와 리바비린 병합 치료중 발생한 벨마비 1예

        페그인터페론과 리바비린 병합요법은 만성 C형 간염의 일차 치료법이다. 저자들은 만성 C형 간염 환자에서 페그인터페론 과 리바비린 병합 요법 중에 발생한 벨마비 1예를 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. 환자는 5년 전부터 만성 C형 간염을 앓아온 48세 남자이며, PEG-IFN α-2a 135μgm 피하주사 주1회와 하루 1200㎎의 리바비린을 투여하였다. 치료시작 후 9개월째 환자는 오른쪽 안면의 근력약화를 호소하였으며 벨마비로 진단되었다. 페그인터페론과 리바비린 병합요법을 지속하면서 관찰하였다. 환자의 벨마비는 페그인터페론 치료를 중단하지 않았음에도 3개월후 증상이 회복되고 이후 벨마비 재발 없이 현재 경과관찰 중이다. 만성 C형 간염에서 페그인터페론과 리바비린 병합 요법시 벨마비의 발생 가능성을 염두에 두어야 하겠다. A Case of Bell's Palsy Associated with Combination Therapy of Pegylated Interferon Alfa-2a (PEG-IFN) and Ribavirin for Chronic Hepatitis C Virus Infection Pegylated interferon alfa(PEG-IFN α) and ribavirin therapy is the first line treatment for chronic hepatitis C. Mild complications of the therapy are common, but more serious complications are rare. We report here a case of Bell's palsy that occurred in a patient with chronic hepatitis C virus infection during combination therapy of PEG-IFN α-2a and ribavirin. The patient was 49-year-old man with chronic hepatitis C (genotype 1b) for 8 years. He had compensated liver cirrhosis with splenomegaly. Therapy with PEG-IFN α- 2a 135mcg/week and ribavirin 1200mg/day was initiated. After 9 months of the therapy, the patient showed a loss of muscular tone on the right side of his face. A diagnosis of Bell's palsy was made. The Bell's palsy resolved over 3 months despite continuation of the combination therapy.

        Body temperature is controlled by thermoregulatory center of the hypothalamus. We report a case of 24 years old man with central fever. He was subjected to a partial excision of pituitary tumor compressing optic chiasm four years ago. He has received hormonal therapy for panhypothyroidism after removal of pituitary tumor. And He received gamma knife operation for partially contrast-enhancing masses in suprasellar and both hypothalamic areas that is probably postoperatively remnant or recurrent tumor of pituitary adenoma. One year after gamma knife operation, he presented with a febrile syndrome of unknown origin including rhabdomyolysis. All usual investigations proved negative. We diagnosed him as central fever with rhabdomyolysis. He received medical ICU care with cooling bed, ice pack. And his symptom improved. Postoperative hyperthermia may result following resection of the pituitary tumor. When central fever is suspected taking note of past history, a quick recognition of course of fever can help reduce the using of unnecessary antibiotics and hospital stay.

        In this paper, we studied the method of electrets electrode which formed to accumulate negative electric charges by corona discharges. The breakdown voltage samples and damaged samples by various corona discharges have made material stabilization and improved characteristics of electric charge storage throughout the annealing processes. After the experiment made material stabilization nearly melting point by many kinds of annealing conditions, we did the corona discharge again by the charged high voltages, a discharge electrode gap, and a discharged time. As we compared it with the best condition, we confirmed that characteristics of electric charge storages were improved.

        Bovine botulism outbreak associated with incidental consumption of presumably contaminated leftover food

        Nine cattle among 18 in a native Korean herd died or were euthanized within 3 days. The affected cattle showed cowshed. The pigs and dogs had been fed leftover food originating from nearby restaurants, and the cattle could presumably reach the contaminated food in the pig troughs. Necropsy revealed a few chicken bones and red pepper pieces as well as large amounts of grain and rice straw hay mixed in the rumen. Botulism type D was isolated in the ruminal contents of one of the cattle. We speculated that the outbreak was associated with the cattle incidentally eating presumably contaminated leftover food from the pig trough.

        <P>The Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway regulates various aspects of development and plays important role in human carcinogenesis. Nemo-like kinase (NLK), which is mediator of Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway, phosphorylates T-cell factor/lymphoid enhancer factor (TCF/LEF) factor and inhibits interaction of β-catenin/TCF complex. Although, NLK is known to be a tumor suppressor in Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway of colon cancer, the other events occurring downstream of NLK pathways in other types of cancer remain unclear. In the present study, we identified that expression of NLK was significantly up-regulated in the HCCs compared to corresponding normal tissues in five selected tissue samples. Immunohistochemical analysis showed significant over-expression of NLK in the HCCs. Targeted-disruption of NLK suppressed cell growth and arrested cell cycle transition. Suppression of NLK elicited anti-mitogenic properties of the Hep3B cells by simultaneous inhibition of cyclinD1 and CDK2. The results of this study suggest that NLK is aberrantly regulated in HCC, which might contribute to the mitogenic potential of tumor cells during the initiation and progression of hepatocellular carcinoma; this process appears to involve the induction of CDK2 and cyclin D1 and might provide a novel target for therapeutic intervention in patients with liver cancer.         Executive summary of the Korean Society of Nephrology 2021 clinical practice guideline for optimal hemodialysis treatment

        The Korean Society of Nephrology (KSN) has published a clinical practice guideline (CPG) document for maintenance hemodialysis (HD). The document, 2021 Clinical Practice Guideline on Optimal HD Treatment, is based on an extensive evidence-oriented review of the benefits of preparation, initiation, and maintenance therapy for HD, with the participation of representative experts from the KSN under the methodologists’ support for guideline development. It was intended to help clinicians participating in HD treatment make safer and more effective clinical decisions by providing user-friendly guidelines. We hope that this CPG will be meaningful as a recommendation in practice, but not on a regulatory rule basis, as different approaches and treatments may be used by health care providers depending on the individual patient’s condition. This CPG consists of eight sections and 15 key questions. Each begins with statements that are graded by the strength of recommendations and quality of the evidence. Each statement is followed by a summary of the evidence supporting the recommendations. There are also a link to full-text documents and lists of the most important reports so that the readers can read further (most of this is available online).

        Short-Term Repeated Treadmill Exercise More Potently Increases Cell Proliferation and Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor Expression in the Hippocampus of Rats

        운동은 해마 치상회에서 신경세포의 생성을 증가시킨다. 뇌 유래 신경영양 인자(brain-derived neurotrophic factor, BDNF)는 신경전달 물질의 분비, 신경 성장, 그리고 신경의 생존 등에 관여하며, tyrosine kinas B (TrK)에 결합하게 된다. 본 연구에서, 일회의 긴 시간 운동과 여러 번의 짧은 시간의 운동이 해마에서 신경세포 생성과 뇌 유래 신경영양 인자와 TrKB의 발현에 미치는 영향을 비교하였다. 무게 200±5 g의 Sprague-Dawley계 흰쥐를 대조군, 하루 1시간 1회 운동군, 하루 10분씩 6회 운동군의 세 군으로 분류하였다(각 군=8마리). 하루 1시간 1회 운동군은 16시에 매일 한 시간씩 트레드밀 운동을 시행하였다. 하루 10분씩 6회 운동군은 10시, 11시, 14시, 15시, 19시, 20시에 각 10분씩 하루 6번 트레드밀 운동을 시행하였다. 이러한 운동은 7일간 지속하였다. 실험결과, 두 가지 형태의 트레드밀 운동 모두 해마에서 신경세포 생성과 뇌 유래 신경영양 인자, 그리고 TrkB의 발현을 증가시켰다 신경세포 생성과 뇌 유래 신경영양 인자는 하루 10분씩 6회 운동군에서 더욱 증가되었다. 본 실험을 통하여 긴 시간의 일회 운동보다 짧은 시간 여러 번 운동이 뇌기능의 향상에 좋은 결과를 미침을 알 수 있었다. Physical exercise enhances cell proliferation and/or neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is implicated in the modulation of neurotransmitters turnover, neurite genesis, and neuronal survival. BDNF binds to the tyrosine kinas B (TrK). In this study, we compared the effects of the one bout of long-duration treadmill exercise and the repeated short-duration treadmill exercise on cell proliferation and expressions of BDNF and TrKB in the hippocampus. Adult male Sprague-Dawley rats, weighing 200±5 g, were randomly divided into three groups (n=8 in each group): control group, one hour-one bout-treadmill exercise group, and ten minutes-six bouts-treadmill exercise group. The rats in the one hour-one bout-treadmill exercise group were forced to run on a motorized treadmill for 60 min once a day (at 16:00). The rats in the ten minutes-six bouts-treadmill exercise group were forced to run on a treadmill once 10 minutes per six times for a day (at 10:00, 11:00, 14:00, 15:00, 19:00, 20:00). Treadmill exercise was continued for 7 consecutive days. The rats in the control group were left without running. Both types of treadmill exercise increased cell proliferation and enhanced expressions of BDNF and TrkB in the hippocampus. Cell proliferation and BDNF expression was more potently increased by the ten minutes-six bouts treadmill exercise than the one hour-one bout treadmill exercise. These results showed that repeated bouts of short-duration treadmill exercise may achieve more useful results for the brain functions than one-bout long-duration treadmill exercise.         Decreased expression of TFF2 and gastric carcinogenesis

        The trefoil factor family (TFF) of peptides, which are protease-resistant and have a strong affinity for mucins, play an important role in gastrointestinal mucosal protection and restitution. Prior studies have indicated that dysregulation of TFF2 was associated with cell migration, resistance to apoptosis, and gastric cancer invasion; however, the underlying mechanism associated with these actions remains unclear. Thus, to investigate the relationship between TFF2 and carcinogenesis in gastric cancer, TFF2 expression was analyzed by Western blot analysis in nine selected gastric cancer tissues and immunohistochemical staining was performed in paraffin-embedded samples from 157 gastric cancers. A reduced TFF2 expression was observed by Western blot analysis in the gastric cancer tissues. However, there was no significant difference in the TFF2 expression according to clinical and pathological parameters of the gastric cancers. To investigate the biological role of TFF2 in the development and progression of gastric cancer, a TFF2 expression plasmid was constructed for in vitro experiments of function. Introduction of TFF2 cDNA into a gastric cancer cell line did not affect tumor cell growth, cell migration or invasion. In conclusion, down-regulation of TFF2 in gastric cancer cells and restoration of TFF2 did not affect the tumorigenic potential of gastric cancer cells in vitro. The loss of TFF2 expression might be an early event of the multi-step process of gastrocarcinogenesis and may play a limited role in the mucosal protection of the normal gastric physiology.

      • Characteristic molecular signature for early detection and prediction of persistent organic pollutants in rat liver.

        <P>Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are degradation-resistant anthropogenic chemicals that accumulate in the food chain and in adipose tissue, and are among the most hazardous compounds ever synthesized. However, their toxic mechanisms are still undefined. To investigate whether characteristic molecular signatures can discriminate individual POP and provide prediction markers for the early detection of POPs exposure in an animal model, we performed transcriptomic analysis of rat liver tissues after exposure to POPs. The six different POPs (toxaphene, hexachlorobenzene, chlordane, mirex, dieldrin, and heptachlor) were administered to 11-week-old male Sprague-Dawley rats, and after 48 h of exposure, RNAs were extracted from liver tissues and subjected to rat whole genome expression microarrays. Early during exposure, conventional toxicological analysis including changes in the body and organ weight, histopathological examination, and blood biochemical analysis did not reflect any toxicant stresses. However, unsupervised gene expression analysis of rat liver tissues revealed in a characteristic molecular signature for each toxicant, and supervised analysis identified 2708 outlier genes that discerned the POPs exposure group from the vehicle-treated control. Combination analysis of two different multiclassifications suggested 384 genes as early detection markers for predicting each POP exposure with 100% accuracy. The data from large-scale gene expression analysis of a different POP exposure in rat model suggest that characteristic expression profiles exist in liver hepatic cells and multiclassification of POP-specific molecular signatures can discriminate each toxicant at an early exposure time. The use of these molecular markers may be more widely implemented in combination with more traditional techniques for assessment and prediction of toxicity exposure to POPs from an environmental aspect.</P>
