<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The conversion of ricinoleic acid from renewable sources to long-chain α,ω-dicarboxylic acids or w-hydroxyl carboxylic acids by microbial processes is constrained by toxicity issues. Here, we demonstrate the possible role of <I>Corynebacterium glutamicum</I> as a new microbial strategy for the biotransformation of fatty acids. The established strain <I>Escherichia coli</I> failed to grow at 5 mM <I>n</I>-heptanoic acid, while the specific growth rate of <I>C. glutamicum</I> declined by 28%. We partially constructed a previously designed multistep biocatalytic pathway in <I>C. glutamicum,</I> and confirmed that the <I>C. glutamicum</I> biocatalyst successfully converted ricinoleic acid to undec-9-enoic acid, heptyl ester via 12-keto-oleic acid. We investigated the effects of cultivation and reaction temperatures, and the type and concentration of non-ionic detergent on recombinant <I>C. glutamicum</I> whole-cell bioconversion. At a cultivation temperature of 30 °C and a reaction temperature of 35 °C, and in the presence of 0.09 g/L Triton X-100, the whole-cell <I>C. glutamicum</I> biocatalyst produced 0.8 mM undec-9-enoic acid, heptyl ester from 1.9 mM 12-ketooleic acid. It also generated 0.7 mM undec-9-enoic acid, heptyl ester from 5.5 mM ricinoleic acid. This is the first report of undec-9-enoic acid, heptyl ester production using a recombinant <I>C. glutamicum</I>-based biocatalyst.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> <I>C. glutamicum</I> ATCC13032 has high tolerance to <I>n</I>-heptanoic acid. </LI> <LI> <I>C. glutamicum</I> biocatalyst produces 0.7 mM of undec-9-enoic acid, heptyl ester from renewable fatty acid. </LI> <LI> This work may help to provide potential of new microbial platform strain for the biotransformation of fatty acid. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

Although the forage production area of Italian ryegrass is expanding in Korea, most of the seeds are imported from abroad. This study was conducted to examine seed productivity of domestic varieties of Italian ryegrass under different soil salinity in reclaimed tideland. Compared to 0.1% of soil salinity, the emergence rate at 0.2 - 0.3% salinity decreased by 7%. The number of ear and grain weight also decreased at the 0.2 - 0.3% of salinity, eventually leading to 23% decreases in seed yield compared to the 0.1% salinity. There was no significant difference in yield components among cultivars, but Greenfarm showed slightly higher yield components than other cultivars. Therefore, when domestic cultivars are harvested in reclaimed land, it is expected to increase the self-sufficiency of domestic seeds and to replace imports of foreign seeds.

Big data analysis methods are useful tools for sorting valuable data and products. Achyranthes Radix root extract (AR) is a well-known herbal medicine in East Asia due to its anti-osteoarthritis, pro-circulatory, and anti-osteoporosis effects. In this stud y, we investigated the liver- and kidney-protective effects of AR by applying big data analysis to traditional medicine. CDDP (cis-diamminedichloridoplatinum) is an effective cancer cell anti-proliferative agent used in the treatment of diverse types of tumors. However, it is clinically limited due to liver and kidney toxicity. The current study was designed to assess the potential protective effects of AR against CDDP-induced hepato-renal toxicity. For this purpose, male Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats were assigned to four groups, each consisting of four animals. Intravenous injection or oral administration of either saline or AR was performed daily for 14 days, whereas CDDP was injected intraperitoneally on day 3 following AR treatment. Serum biochemistry results revealed that CDDP induced clear hepatic and renal damage while the AR treatment groups showed less damage relative to controls. Next, we tested the pharmacokinetics of AR using 20-hydroxyecdysone (20-HE), which is the most abundant component of AR extract. After intravenous administration of AR, the plasma concentration of 20-HE rapidly declined with a terminal half-life (t1/2) of 0.99±0.47 h. The area under the plasma concentration vs. time curve was 24.96±3.5 h*ng/mL. The present study provides valuable tools for further verification studies of the classical herbal literature and its scientific relevance.

<P>A scheme for the excitation of slow surface plasmon pulses using photonic interband transition in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) waveguide is proposed. An investigation the mode transition behavior inside the binary grating confirmed that the proposed concept can be understood in terms of the coupling of symmetric and anti-symmetric plasmonic modes. We observed that, although a binary grating that is optimized for a single frequency can excite slow surface plasmon pulses, it is inadequate for broadband mode conversion. To rectify this, a chirped grating was designed for the demonstration of broadband mode conversion by applying a cascade mode transition with different frequencies.</P>

An important factor in developing self-driving cars is to ensure stability in driving. To do this, it is necessary to design a filter with good performance or implement an autonomous driving system by applying a function that is strong against external noise. In this paper, methods for improving the stability of autonomous driving are presented. When detecting lanes, a median filter is applied and a function to recognize only linear changes has been added. In addition, the vehicle does not deviate from the lane through speed control during steering. Using the position of the obstacle measured using the Lidar and the detected lane, it avoids the obstacle without leaving the lane. Crosswalk recognition must satisfy two conditions: pattern recognition and color detection. By using AR markers for parking, functions can be performed regardless of light, terrain, or obstacles.
