In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.
Pumpless dispensing of a droplet by breaking up a liquid bridge formed by electric induction
Hong, Jin Seok,Lee, Beom Seok,Moon, Dustin,Lee, Jeong–,Gun,Kang, In Seok WILEY-VCH Verlag 2010 Electrophoresis Vol.31 No.8

Dispensing uniform pico-to-nanoliter droplets has become one of essential components in various application fields from high-throughput bio-analysis to printing. In this study, a new method is suggested and demonstrated for dispensing a droplet on the top plate with an inverted geometry by using electric field. The process of dispensing droplets consists of two stages: (i) formation of liquid bridge by moving up the charged fluid mass using the electrostatic force between the charges on the fluid mass and the induced charges on the substrate and (ii) its break-up by the motion of the top plate. Different from conventional electrohydrodynamic methods, electric induction enables the droplets to be dispensed on various surfaces including non-conducting substrate. The use of capillarity with an inverted geometry removes the need of external pumps or elaborates control for constant flow feed. The droplet diameter has been characterized as a function of the nozzle-to-plate distance and the plate moving velocity. The robustness of the present method is shown in terms of nozzle length and applied voltage. Finally, its practical applicability is confirmed by rendering a 19 by 24 array of highly uniform droplets with only 1.8% size variation without use of any active feedback control.

Oncogenic KRAS Sensitizes Lung Adenocarcinoma to GSK-J4–Induced Metabolic and Oxidative Stress
Hong, Beom-Jin,Park, Woo-Yong,Kim, Hwa-Ryeon,Moon, Jin Woo,Lee, Ho Yeon,Park, Jun Hyung,Kim, Seon-Kyu,Oh, Youngbin,Roe, Jae-Seok,Kim, Mi-Young American Association for Cancer Research 2019 Cancer research Vol.79 No.22

This study not only provides a novel association between KRAS mutation and GSK-J4 sensitivity but also demonstrates the underlying mechanisms, suggesting a potential use of GSK-J4 in cancer patients with KRAS mutations.

Genetic and epigenetic changes (e.g., histone methylation) contribute to cancer development and progression, but our understanding of whether and how specific mutations affect a cancer's sensitivity to histone demethylase (KDM) inhibitors is limited. Here, we evaluated the effects of a panel of KDM inhibitors on lung adenocarcinomas (LuAC) with various mutations. Notably, LuAC lines harboring KRAS mutations showed hypersensitivity to the histone H3K27 demethylase inhibitor GSK-J4. Specifically, GSK-J4 treatment of KRAS mutant–containing LuAC downregulated cell-cycle progression genes with increased H3K27me3. In addition, GSK-J4 upregulated expression of genes involved in glutamine/glutamate transport and metabolism. In line with this, GSK-J4 reduced cellular levels of glutamate, a key source of the TCA cycle intermediate α-ketoglutarate (αKG) and of the antioxidant glutathione, leading to reduced cell viability. Supplementation with an αKG analogue or glutathione protected KRAS-mutant LuAC cells from GSK-J4–mediated reductions in viability, suggesting GSK-J4 exerts its anticancer effects by inducing metabolic and oxidative stress. Importantly, KRAS knockdown in mutant LuAC lines prevented GSK-J4–induced decrease in glutamate levels and reduced their susceptibility to GSK-J4, whereas overexpression of oncogenic KRAS in wild-type LuAC lines sensitized them to GSK-J4. Collectively, our study uncovers a novel association between a genetic mutation and KDM inhibitor sensitivity and identifies the underlying mechanisms. This suggests GSK-J4 as a potential treatment option for cancer patients with KRAS mutations.

Significance:

This study not only provides a novel association between KRAS mutation and GSK-J4 sensitivity but also demonstrates the underlying mechanisms, suggesting a potential use of GSK-J4 in cancer patients with KRAS mutations.

Performance Prediction of Impulse Turbine System in Various Operating Conditions
BEOM-SOO HYUN,JAE-SEUNG MOON,KEYYONG HONG,SEOK-WON HONG 한국해양공학회 2007 韓國海洋工學會誌 Vol.21 No.5
This paper deals with the design and analysis of a 250 ㎾ class impulse turbine for wave energy conversion. Numerical analysis was performed using FLUENT. The size and the performance of a turbine required to provide a certain power can be estimated using a series of performance charts built through the present study. Temporal and spatial variations of flow fields were also considered and compared with those of uniform inflow. It was concluded that a simple steady-flow analysis using performance charts still provided a practical and useful way to predict the design and performance of turbines.
Preliminary Study on Evaluation Affecting Licensibility of a Nuclear Fusion Demonstration Reactor
Beom Seok Kim(김범석),Suk-ho Hong(홍석호),Sung Bo Moon(문성보) 대한기계학회 2021 대한기계학회 춘추학술대회 Vol.2021 No.11
The first cradle of international cooperative nuclear fusion research based on the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) project is approaching. While the securing of fusion physics and engineering technology is being attempted, much attention is being paid to implementation of a nuclear fusion demonstration reactor beyond ITER. This study intends to discuss the necessity of securing a regulatory-based environment, which will be an essential factor for the timely settlement of a fusion demonstration reactor, and securing the technical foundation required to develop nuclear fusion technology. Based on differences from commercialized nuclear reactors, predictable hazard analysis, and the expected acceptability of radioactive waste from the fusion reactor, we discuss significant issues with a sense of safety for securing acceptance in our society. Herein, we present a preliminary evaluation on whether nuclear fusion technology is compatible with the current nuclear regulatory framework.
Effect of Guide Vane on the Performance of Impulse Turbine for Wave Energy Conversion
BEOM-SOO HYUN,JAE-SEUNG MOON,SEOK-WON HONG 한국해양공학회 2004 韓國海洋工學會誌 Vol.18 No.6
This paper deals with the performance analysis of the impulse turbine for a OWC type wave energy conversion device. Numerical analysis was performed using the commercially-available software FLUENT. This parametric study includes variation of the setting angle of the guide vane. Since parametric study at various flow coefficients requires a tremendous amount of computing time, two-dimensional cascade flow approximation was employed to determine the optimum principal particulars in a rather simple manner. A Full three-dimensional calculation was also performed for several cases to confirm the validity of the two-dimensional approach. Results were compared to other experimental data, such as Setoguchi et al. (2001)'s extensive set of data, and found that the usefulness of 2-D analysis was well demonstrated. The advantages of each method were also evaluated.
