        White-Matter Hyperintensities and Lacunar Infarcts Are Associated with an Increased Risk of Alzheimer’s Disease in the Elderly in China

        Background and Purpose This study investigated the contribution of white-matter hyperintensities (WMH) and lacunar infarcts (LI) to the risk of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) in an elderly cohort in China. Methods Older adults who were initially cognitively normal were examined with MRI at baseline, and followed for 5 years. WMH were classified as mild, moderate, or severe, and LI were classified into a few LI (1 to 3) or many LI (≥4). Cognitive function was assessed using the Mini Mental State Examination and the Activities of Daily Living scale. Results Among the 2,626 subjects, 357 developed AD by the end of the 5-year follow-up period. After adjusting for age and other potential confounders, having only WMH, having only LI, and having both WMH and LI were associated with an increased risk of developing AD compared with having neither WMH nor LI. Moderate and severe WMH were associated with an increased risk of developing AD compared with no WMH. Furthermore, patients with many LI had an increased risk of developing AD compared with no LI. Conclusions Having moderate or severe WMH and many LI were associated with an increased risk of developing AD, with this being particularly striking when both WMH and LI were present.

        Microstructure Evolution and Mechanical Properties of AA2099 Al–Li Alloy with Tailored Li‐Containing Precipitates in Uniaxial Compression at Medium Temperature

        Microstructure characteristics and mechanical behavior of AA2099 Al–Li alloy with no pre-existing Li-containing precipitates(AA2099-1 sample), pre-existing δ′ precipitates (AA2099-2 sample), pre-existing T1phase (AA2099-3 sample) andpre-existing T2phase (AA2099-4 sample) are systematically investigated via isothermal uniaxial compression at 250 °C inthe present study. Experimental results demonstrate that at the onset of plastic deformation, dynamic precipitation of smallsizedT1phase occurs rapidly within AA2099-1 sample, while it will be hindered within AA2099-2 sample. The increasingplastic strain benefits to dynamic precipitation of small-sized T1phase in AA2099-2 sample. Consequently, AA2099-1 andAA2099-2 samples possess similar and intermediate mechanical behaviors. In terms of AA2099-3 sample, the existence oflarge-sized T1phase results in the maximum yielding stress. However, some regions within these large-sized T1precipitatesare suspected to be sheared by cross-slip, leading to the destruction of crystallographic structure and the formation of Almatrix intervals. This aspect is responsible for the gradual degradation in true stress-strain curve after peak stress. As forAA2099-4 sample, dynamic precipitation rarely happens during plastic deformation and the interaction between dislocationand the pre-existing T2phase belongs to Orowan looping, resulting in the minimal mechanical response. Besides,AA2099-1 sample possesses the average minimum deviation angle (MDA) of ~ 16.5° between the loading direction and the<110> crystal direction, whereas AA2099-4 sample owns the average MDA of ~ 7.5°. The difference in MDA is mainlyattributed to δ′ phase and T1phase, which will separately accelerate and postpone the rotation of orientation towards the<110> crystal direction.

        Effects of Ga-doping on the microstructure and magnetic properties of MnBi alloys

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The low temperature phase Mn<SUB>55</SUB>Bi<SUB>45-<I>x</I> </SUB>Ga<SUB> <I>x</I> </SUB> (<I>x</I> = 0, 1, 3, 5, and 10) alloys were prepared by induction melting process with subsequent low temperature annealing. The effects of Ga-doping on the crystal structure and magnetic properties of the alloys were systematically studied. The room temperature coercivities of Mn<SUB>55</SUB>Bi<SUB>45-<I>x</I> </SUB>Ga<SUB> <I>x</I> </SUB> after ball milling increased from 1.43 T for <I>x</I> = 0 to 1.66 T for <I>x</I> = 5, while the saturation magnetization decreased from 60.7 Am<SUP>2</SUP>/kg (<I>x</I> = 0) to 45.1 Am<SUP>2</SUP>/kg (<I>x</I> = 5). The maximum energy product (<I>BH</I>)<SUB>max</SUB> of Mn<SUB>55</SUB>Bi<SUB>44</SUB>Ga powders reached 7.87 MGOe.         <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Using X-ray Magnetic Linear Dichroism (XMLD) measurement, we investigate the antiferromagnetic (AFM) NiO spin reorientation transition (SRT) in epitaxial NiO/CoO/MgO(0 0 1) system at room temperature and constructed a complete NiO spin phase diagram. Then utilizing Magneto-Optic Kerr Effect (MOKE) combined with a rotation magnetic field (ROTMOKE), we investigated the effect of NiO SRT on the magnetic anisotropy of a ferromagnetic (FM) Py overlayer in Py/NiO/CoO/MgO(0 0 1) system. We find that the Py coercivity and anisotropy only slightly enhanced for Py on top of out-of-plane NiO spins but greatly enhanced for Py on top of in-plane NiO spins.         Effect of inorganic mesoporous carriers on 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetyl-<i>rac</i>-glycerol-loaded solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system: Physicochemical characterization and bioavailability in rats

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The purpose of this study was to assess the impact of inorganic mesoporous carriers on the physicochemical properties and oral bioavailability of 1-palmitoyl-2-linoleoyl-3-acetyl-<I>rac</I>-glycerol (PLAG)-loaded solid self-emulsifying drug delivery system (solid SEDDS). Numerous PLAG-loaded solid SEDDS formulations were prepared by spray drying technique with sodium laurylsulfate (SLS), butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA) and inorganic mesoporous materials as a surfactant, antioxidant and solid carrier, respectively. The mesoporous materials, such as calcium silicate, silicon dioxide and magnesium aluminosilicate were used as the solid carriers. Their physicochemical properties, solubility, dissolution and pharmacokinetic studies in rats were performed compared with drug alone. Three solid SEDDSs composed of PLAG/BHA/SLS/mesopous carrier at the weight ratio of 1:0.0002:0.25:0.5 resulted in a small emulsion droplet and excellent drug loading efficiency. The solid SEDDS formulations prepared with calcium silicate and silicon dioxide showed a rough-surfaced irregular shape and rough-surfaced spheres, respectively. Magnesium aluminosilicate generated a sticky powder, due to its relatively low specific surface area, resulting in insufficient adsorption of PLAG. These solid SEDDSs improved the solubility, dissolution and oral bioavailability of PLAG. Ultimately, the solid SEDDS prepared with silicon dioxide resulted in the best drug loading efficiency, shape, solubility, dissolution and oral bioavailability due to its great specific surface area.       • Risk Factors for Surgical Site Infections after Liver Resec-tion (A Multivariate Analysis of 6,132 Patients)

        Aims: Surgical site infection (SSI) is a common postoperative complication and associated with an increased morbidity, hospital stay, and overall cost. The aim of the present study was to identify risk factors for SSIs after hepatic resection based on a large single-center cohort. Methods: A retrospective study was conducted of 6,132 patients who underwent liver resection without concomitant biliary reconstruction or gastrointestinal procedures between 2014 and 2016 at the largest hepatic center in China. The occurrences of SSI, classified as incisional SSI and organ/space SSI within 30 days after operation were investigated. Patient- and surgical-related risk variables were collected using standardized data collection form. A likelihood ratio forward regression model was used to assess the independent association of risk factors with SSI. Results: SSI developed in 587 patients (9.6%), including superficial/deep incisional SSI in 357 patients (5.8 %), and organ/ space SSI in 304 patients (5.0 %). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed that obesity, diabetes mellitus, ASA score ≥ 2, liver cirrhosis, re-hepatectomy, hepatoliathiasis, and intraoperative blood transfusion were independent risk factors of overall SSI. However, incisional and organ/space SSI differed from each other with respect to risk factors. Among a variety of risk factors, hepatolithiasis, liver cirrhosis, and intraoperative blood transfusion were consistently associated with both incisional and organ/space SSI. Conclusions: SSI is a common complication after liver resection, and more caution should be taken in patients with hepatolithiasis or liver cirrhosis. Prevention strategies focusing on factors associated with SSI is necessary in order to reduce SSI after liver resection.

        Nuclide assignment for an isolated band observed in the 10B + 114Cd reaction

        Three experiments based on the nuclear reactions 14N + 110Pd, 10B + 114Cd and 11B + 114Cd were performed. Coincidences between γ-rays emitted from these reactions were measured with the same detection array which consisted of 14 HPGe detectors. A new band structure was identified using an offline analysis of coincidence data. Because of the isomeric nature of the bandhead, the new band cannot be connected to any known state in any residual nuclei of the used reactions. To assign it to a specific nucleus, we evaluated the experimental population intensities of various known bands in known residual nuclei and investigated the entrance channel effects in the three different experiments. The population intensity patterns of the known bands were observed to exhibit regular systematics. Based on such experimental systematics, we suggest that the most reasonable nuclide assignment for the new band is the 120I nucleus.

        Effect of Additive of the Encapsulated Amounts and Solubility of Poorly Water-soluble Ibuprofen in Gelatin Microcapsules

        Poorly water-soluble ibuprofen and ethanol can be encapsulated in gelatin microcapsule by spray drying technique. To select an optimal formula of ibuprofen-loaded gelatin microcapsule which increased the ethanol content and ibuprofen solubility with the decreased amount of gelatin in the microcapsules, in this study, the effect of gelatin, ibuprofen and sodium lauryl sulfate on the ibuprofen solubility and the amount of ethanol and ibuprofen encapsulated in the gelatin microcapsule were investigated. Ibuprofen solubility and the amount of ethanol encapsulated increased as gelatin and sodium lauryl sulfate increased, reached maximum at 4% and 0.6%, respectively and then followed a rapid decrease. Furthermore, the ibuprofen solubility and the encapsulated ibuprofen content increased as the amount of ibuprofen increased, reaching maximum at 0.5% and beyond that, there was no change in the solubility and ibuprofen content. However, the encapsulated ethanol content remained same irrespective of the amount of ibuprofen. On the basis of increased ibuprofen solubility, our results showed that the formula of ibuprofen-loaded gelatin microcapsule at the ratio of gelatin/ibuprofen/sodium lauryl sulfate/water/ethanol of 4/0.5/0.6/30/70 with ibuprofen solubility of about $290\;{\mu}g/mL$ and ethanol content of about $160\;{\mu}g/mg$ could be a potential oral delivery system for poorly water-soluble ibuprofen.

        Implantation of Bone Marrow Mesenchymal Stem Cells into Small Intestinal Submucosa Improves Bile Duct Injury in Rabbits

        BACKGROUND: Bile duct injury (BDI), which may occur during cholecystectomy procedures and living-donor liver transplantation, leads to life-altering complications and significantly increased mortality and morbidity. Tissue engineering, as an emerging method, has shown great potential to treat BDI. Here, we aimed to explore the application of small intestinal submucosa (SIS) matrix composites with bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) to treat BDI in a rabbit model. METHODS: Rabbit-derived BMSCs were used as seed cells. Porcine SIS was used as the support material. Five centimetres of the common bile duct was dissected, and 1/3–1/2 of the anterior wall diameter was transversely incised to construct the rabbit BDI model. Then, SIS materials without/with BMSCs were inserted into the common bile duct of the BDI rabbits. After 1, 2, 4, and 8 weeks of implantation, the common bile duct was removed. Haematoxylin and eosin (HE) staining was used to assess pathological alterations in the common bile duct, while immunohistochemical staining and western blotting were used to detect expression of the epithelial cell markers CK19 and E-cadherin. Scanning electron microscopy was used to evaluate BMSC growth. RESULTS: Compared with BMSCs alone, SIS-attached BMSCs had increased growth. HE staining showed that the injured bile duct healed well and that the complex gradually degraded as the time from implantation increased. Immunohistochemical staining and western blotting showed that compared with the control group, the in vivo complex group had significantly elevated expression levels of CK19 and E-cadherin. CONCLUSION: BMSC implantation into SIS could improve BDI in rabbits, which might have clinical value for BDI treatment.
