        Antioxidant Action of a Chrysanthemum morifolium Extract Protects Rat Brain Against Ischemia and Reperfusion Injury

        The present study evaluated the potential neuroprotective effect and underlying mechanism of the total flavones extracted from Chrysanthemum morifolium (TFCM) against ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury. An animal model of cerebral ischemia was established by occluding the right middle cerebral artery for 90 minutes followed by reperfusion for 22 hours. The neurobehavioral scores, infarct area, and hemispheric edema were evaluated. The superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) level in brain were also measured. The results showed that pretreatment with TFCM significantly decreased the neurological deficit scores, percentage of infarction, and brain edema and attenuated the decrease in SOD activity, the elevation of MDA content, and the generation of ROS. In isolated brain mitochondria, Ca2+-induced swelling was attenuated by pretreatment with TFCM, and this effect was antagonized by atractyloside. These results showed that pretreatment with TFCM provides significant protection against cerebral I/R injury in rats by, at least in part, its antioxidant action and consequent inhibition of mitochondrial swelling.

        Rapid Detection of Campylobacter jejuni Using Fluorescent Microspheres as Label for Immunochromatographic Strip Test

        Campylobacter jejuni is a worldwide foodborne pathogen recognized as a leading cause of human gastrointestinal enteritis. A rapid, sensitive, and specific method is required to monitor food and water in cases of contamination by this pathogen. This report presents a novel immunochromatographic test (ICT) using fluorescent microspheres labeled with polyclonal antibodies of C. jejuni as the capture reagent dispensed onto the conjugate pad. Polyclonal antibodies against the outer membrane protein PEB1 of C. jejuni were used as the detective reagent at the test line, whereas the goat anti-rabbit IgG was used on the control line. PEB1 was obtained by gene cloning and expression to prepare its antibody. In this study, a simple and rapid ICT is reported for detecting C. jejuni for the first time with a detection limit of 106 CFU/mL.

        Fabrication of nonlinear optical films based on methacrylate/silica hybrid matrix

        A free-radical polymerization was performed to fabricate nonlinear optical (NLO) hybrid films based on nanostructural building blocks and an interpenetrating methacrylate/silica hybrid matrix (IHM). A bulky chromophore (disperse orange 3) bonded with ally glycidyl ether (AGE) was incorporated into the hybrid matrix in combination with (γ-methacrylpropyl)-silsesquioxane through the polymerization. Different amounts of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane as modifiers were added into the IHM to enhance properties. It has been shown that the IHM increases the crosslink density of the network and the interaction potential between dipoles to help maintain the orientational order, and the generated NLO materials enhance the Tg, nonresonant second-order nonlinearity and temporal stability.         중국의 안보정책 대안 : 성숙한 동북아 연대와 21세기를 동북아의 시대로 만들기 위하여

        This article tries to shed new light on strategic issues relevant to China as a major player in the Asia-Pacific region. It begins with a description of the changed geopolitical environment in Northeast Asia, followed by an analysis on China's threat perceptions. It concludes with a prediction that a new "Great East Asian Co-Prosperity Sphere" will come true in the 21st century. It has been commonly acceptable that US Forces in East Asia played important blancing role against the Soviet threat during Cold War years. The end of the Cold War, however, diminished the raison d'etre of the US Forces in the area. So it is desirable for the US Forces to withdraw from this area. Russian threat has been declined and also regional dialogue on the security in North east Asia has been develped. Accordingly, even if Russia should revitalize itself as a military power in some time, it could be contained in the reginal security mechanism. Moreover, three countries in Northeast Asia, China, Korea, Japan shares the tradition of using Hanchi(Chinese charcters) for thousands of years. Three countries have been pursuing managed economic development that is based on the authoritarian pluralism. Because of these common characters, the three countries could build up mutual cooperation regime in Northeast Asia. The real threat to the PRC's current regime comes not from foreign military intervention, as it was mistakenly perceived by Mao Zedong and his comrades-in arm during the Cold War years, but from Chinese people's pervasive dissatisfaction with the regime's corruption, which is clearly discerned by Deng Xiaoping and his successors today. Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Unless a political reform is launched and succeeds, in which the current regime in China takes initiative to change it self from one-party dictatorship to a multi-party check-and-balance democracy, the corruption will not end but the regime will end. The current regime will definitely change, hopefully and quite possibly, through its own political reform or, otherwise, be changed by angered people. Several factors may work in favor of extending people's patience before the political reform is introduce. Economic development is, of course, the most effective factor for the reason that it improves people's living standard and thus makes them less rebellious. Enhancing the nation's international prestige is another stabilizing factor. It is commonsensical that a regime can survive longer than expected if it can hold high the nation's international prestige, and that revolution is more likely to occur in a nation defeated or humiliated by foreign enemies. The Mainland-Taiwan reunification is yet another factor of national emotion in favor of the central goverment in Beijing to continue its rule. Punishing Taiwanese separatists offers a good opportunity for Beijing to unite the mainland people around the goverment, if the PLA is able to execute the military punishment in an excellent way. The next 15years will be important for the world in a transition from making expedient adjustment to the post-Cold War environment to searching for ways toward global eternal harmony. The major orientation of this transition is guided by the fact that "economics has taken command of international relations… ideology has declined in the face of pragmatic impulses stemming from economic primacy." However, economic development alone may not necessarily lead to intra-national and international harmony. Political devebpment and ideological convergence must follow. Northeast Asia, where the best planned capitalist economy in Japan and South Korea meets the most market-oriented socialist economy in China and where social discipline and participatory are equally appreciated, may become a vanguard in the search for the harmony based on socialism-capitalism convergence. History tends to repeat itself, though not exactly in every de tail and in the same manner. Some things happen twice in history : the first time being bad and the second time being good, or vice versa. The "Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere" was doubtlessly an imperialist concept, proposed by Japanese militarist aggressors, when Korea was a colony and China was split in side and invaded from outside. However, the old label itself must not be considered as permanently bad and can be borrowed to advertize a new and good thing. In today's global, regional and sub-reional environment, a proposition on the Great East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere is progressive rather than aggressive.

      • News Video Text Area Positioning Based on an Improved Trajkovic Corner Detector

        Comparing to other videos, text in news video contains more semantic information which are mostly descript the news event. So, the extraction of text plays an important role for obtaining the high-level semantic information from the video. In this paper, the improved Trajkovic corner detection algorithm has been studied based on the characteristics of text in news video. According to the characteristics of text, the adaptive thresholding method of scale in combination with standard deviation (SCSD) can be applied to determine the corners, which aims to accurately obtain the text-related corners. The breadth-first clustering algorithm was also been used to distinguish and plan the detected corners which are in same range to determine the text area in video frame. The accuracy of recognition and semantic exploration of the extracted text can be used to quickly understand news video that can effectively improve the efficiency to summarize the news videos. The experimental results show this method with high pertinence which can better achieve the targets. The detection accuracy of text-related corners can reach to 82.1% which is higher than other methods. Under the same experimental condition, recall ratio and precision ratio of the text area are also improved dramatically.

        Phytochemistry and pharmacology of natural prenylated flavonoids

        Prenylated flavonoids are a special kind of flavonoid derivative possessing one or more prenyl groups in the parent nucleus of the flavonoid. The presence of the prenyl side chain enriched the structural diversity of flavonoids and increased their bioactivity and bioavailability. Prenylated flavonoids show a wide range of biological activities, such as anti-cancer, anti-inflammatory, neuroprotective, anti-diabetic, anti-obesity, cardioprotective effects, and anti-osteoclastogenic activities. In recent years, many compounds with significant activity have been discovered with the continuous excavation of the medicinal value of prenylated flavonoids, and have attracted the extensive attention of pharmacologists. This review summarizes recent progress on research into natural active prenylated flavonoids to promote new discoveries of their medicinal value.

      • Genetic Association between the XPG Asp1104His Polymorphism and Head and Neck Cancer Susceptibility: Evidence Based on a Meta-Analysis

        Background: Previous studies evaluating the association between the xeroderma pigmentosum group G (XPG) Asp1104His polymorphism and head and neck cancer susceptibility have proven controversial. This meta-analysis of the literature was performed to obtain a more precise estimation of the relationship. Materials and Methods: We systematically searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science with a time limit of Dec 18, 2014. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used to assess the strength of any association. Results: We performed a meta-analysis of eight published case-control studies, including 3,621 cases and 5,475 controls. Overall, no significant association was found between the XPG Asp1104His polymorphism and head and neck cancer susceptibility under all genetic models. In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, the XPG Asp1104His polymorphism had statistically significant association with elevated head and neck cancer risk under CC vs GG (OR=1.24, 95% CI=1.00~1.54) and the recessive model (OR=1.22, 95%CI=1.01~1.46) in Asian populations. A similar result was found under CC vs GG (OR =1.22, 95%CI=1.01~1.47) in the population based subgroup by source of control. When performed by tumor site, the XPG Asp1104His polymorphism had statistically significant association with elevated laryngeal cancer under all genetic models (CC vs GG: OR=1.59, 95% CI=1.16~2.19; GC vs GG: OR=1.38, 95%CI=1.10~1.72; dominant model: OR=1.42, 95% CI=1.15~1.74; recessive model: OR=1.36, 95% CI=1.02~1.81). Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggested that the XPG Asp1104His polymorphism is a risk factor for head and neck cancer susceptibility, especially for laryngeal cancer and in Asian populations.

        Gibberellin and auxin signals control scape cell elongation and proliferation in Agapanthus praecox ssp. Orientalis

        Plant height is determined by the processes of cell proliferation and elongation. Plant hormones play key roles in a species-dependent manner in these processes. We used paclobutrazol (PAC) at 400 mg·L-1 in this study to spray Agapanthus praecox ssp. orientalis plants in order to induce dwarf scape (inflorescence stem). Morphological examination showed that PAC reduced scape height by inhibiting the cell elongation by 54.56% and reducing cell proliferation by 10.45% compared to the control. Quantification and immunolocalization of endogenous gibberellins (GAs) and indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) showed that the GA1, GA3, and GA4 levels and the IAA gradient were reduced. Among these hormones, GA4 was the key component of GAs, which decreased 59.51-92.01% compared to the control in scape. The expression of cell wall synthesis related genes cellulose synthase (CESA) and UDP-glucuronic acid decarboxylase (UXS) were upregulated significantly, whereas cell wall loosening gene xyloglucan endotransglucosylase 2 (XET2) was downregulated by 99.99% surprisingly. Correlation analysis suggested GA regulated cell elongation and auxin modulated cell proliferation in Agapanthus scape. Additionally, the accumulation of sugars played roles in cell wall synthesis and cell expansion. These results indicated GA and IAA signals triggered a downstream signaling cascade, controlled cell expansion and proliferation during scape elongation.

        Toughening polystyrene by core–shell grafting copolymer polybutadiene-graft-polystyrene with potassium persulfate as initiator

        Core–shell polybutadiene-graft-polystyrene rubber particles with different ratios of polybutadiene core to polystyrene shell were synthesized by an emulsion polymerization using K2S2O8 as an initiator. Then the core–shell rubber particles were blended with PS to prepare PS/PB-g-PS. The rubber particles with a size of 0.3–0.5 mm could toughen polystyrene significantly. The mechanical properties, morphologies and deformation mechanisms of samples were extensively investigated. The experimental results showed that the dispersion of rubber particles in a ‘‘cluster’’ state leads to better impact resistances. Crazing occurred from rubber particles and extended in a bridge-like manner to neighboring rubber particles parallel to the equatorial direction.

        In order to better understand the development process and role of national security information in the field of national security research, this paper analyzes the scientific atlas of national security information from the perspective of overall national security concept, and concludes that the disciplines involved in studying national security issues under overall national security concept include ideological and political theory courses, national security science, security management, national security information science, etc., It points out that the continuous integration of related disciplines promotes the emergence of national security information science as a separate discipline, and points out the research trend of national security information under overall national security concept.
