Health and Income Variation – A Panel Data Study on the Developed and Less Developed Economies
I-MING CHIU,TETSUJI YAMADA,CHIA-CHING CHEN 한국국제경제학회 2011 International Economic Journal Vol.25 No.2
In this paper, human capital in the form of ‘health status’ is introduced into a neoclassical economic growth model as one of the main factors differentiating rich and poor countries. Various panel data models are used to examine how health and other growth factors affect average income in different countries. Our main empirical finding indicates that a one-year increase in life expectancy (the health status measure) raises GDP per capita by 0.5–0.9%. Based on this result, a baseline health status can be established to help poor countries achieve a targeted economic growth rate.

Sintering YAG:Ce phosphor ceramic layers onto glass substrates by CO2 laser for WLED applications
Chiu I-Chi,Nien Yung-Tang,Chen Pui-Jung 한국물리학회 2023 Current Applied Physics Vol.50 No.-
Cerium-doped yttrium aluminum garnet (YAG:Ce) phosphor layers were sintered onto glass using CO2 laser. The layer adhesion was found to depend on the spin coating thickness. The x-ray diffraction indicated the formation of YAG phase, with minor impurities of Y2SiO5 and Y4Al2O9. When the coating thickness was 65 μm, the laser beam reacted thoroughly with glass and YAG precursors, and a liquid phase was formed, producing a thin amorphous layer (~5 μm) on the surface grooves. However, when the thickness was increased to 170 μm, the laser beam could not penetrate to react entirely with YAG precursors, resulting in more raw residues and poor adhesion. The sintered YAG:Ce phosphor layers on glass were characterized via photoluminescence, presenting yellow emission with a thermal quench to 75% at 125 ◦C, which is comparable to that of the solid-state reacted YAG:Ce ceramics.
Efficiently Processing Skyline Query on Multi-Instance Data
Chiu, Shu-I,Hsu, Kuo-Wei Korea Information Processing Society 2017 Journal of information processing systems Vol.13 No.5
Related to the maximum vector problem, a skyline query is to discover dominating tuples from a set of tuples, where each defines an object (such as a hotel) in several dimensions (such as the price and the distance to the beach). A tuple, an instance of an object, dominates another tuple if it is equally good or better in all dimensions and better in at least one dimension. Traditionally, skyline queries are defined upon single-instance data or upon objects each of which is associated with an instance. However, in some cases, an object is not associated with a single instance but rather by multiple instances. For example, on a review website, many users assign scores to a product or a service, and a user's score is an instance of the object representing the product or the service. Such data is an example of multi-instance data. Unlike most (if not all) others considering the traditional setting, we consider skyline queries defined upon multi-instance data. We define the dominance calculation and propose an algorithm to reduce its computational cost. We use synthetic and real data to evaluate the proposed methods, and the results demonstrate their utility.

Three methods for studying coupled vibration in a multi flexible disk rotor system
YiJui Chiu,Xiao-Yun Li,Yi-Cheng Chen,Sheng-Rui Jian,Chia-Hao Yang,I-Hsiang Lin 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.11
This paper improved and developed Shaft-disk-blade (SDB) rotor system based on the previous studies of the authors in the last decade from Yang and Huang (2005) to Chiu et al. (2017). This paper also explored blade-bending, disk-transverse, and shaft-torsion coupling vibration of a multi flexible disk rotor system. Unlike the previous studies of the authors, this paper adopted three methods: (a) Assumed mode method (AMM), (b) Finite element method (FEM), and (c) experimental method. The first approach is the main method, and the two other methods are complementary. Results generated from the three methods were then compared and analyzed. Based on the previous definition of the authors, a flexible disk rotor system displays three types of coupling vibrations: Inter-blade, SDB, and diskblade modes. The system changes the rules of natural frequencies and mode shapes. This paper presents several interesting results. First, the author determined the change rules of the mode shapes and natural frequencies using the AMM, FEM (including three kinds of software), and the experimental method. Second, numerical calculation results also revealed that two phenomena regarding the distance of disk and flexible disk would be affected by the natural frequencies. Third, the experimental results would be explored in this paper. Last, the flexible disk could affect the system instability in the case study of rotation effects.

Objective: The impact of serotonergic system on obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is well studied. However, the correlation between OC presentations and autonomic nervous system (ANS) is still unclear. Furthermore, whether the correlation might be modulated by serotonin is also uncertain. Methods: We recruited eighty-nine healthy subjects. Serotonin transporter (SERT) availability by [123I]ADAM and heart rate variability (HRV) tests were measured. Symptoms checklist-90 was measured for the OC presentations. The interaction between HRV and SERT availability were calculated and the correlation between HRV and OC symptoms were analyzed after stratified SERT level into two groups, split at medium. Results: The interactions were significant in the factors of low frequency (LF), high frequency (HF), and root mean square of successive differences (RMSSD). Furthermore, the significantly negative correlations between OC symptoms and the above HRV indexes existed only in subjects with higher SERT availability. Conclusion: OC symptoms might be correlated with ANS regulations in subjects with higher SERT availability.

China is the largest international students exporting country in the world. Base on the economic globalization and trade liberalization, the international talents cultivation, and how to assure their quality of higher education are important to China. This paper aims at finding out the dimensions influencing the quality of studying abroad. To obtain the weight and influential degree of the dimensions, we identify four criteria and sub-criteria mainly from the literatures related to learning quality in higher education and cross-cultural communication. To handle the inter-relations among the identified criteria and sub-criteria, we proposed a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) approach based on Decision Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory based Analytic Network Process (DANP). This paper established how the obtained results will help the teachers in higher education system and Ministry of Education to optimize their improvement plans.
