Two new polyketides, chinoketides A and B (1 - 2) with a known compound xylarphthalide A (3), were isolated from the solid medium of the endophytes from the leaves of the relic plant Distylium chinense with the "black-box" co-culture method, and the structures of two new compounds were elucidated by NMR, MS and CD spectra. And the absolute configurations of chinoketides A (1) and B (2) were determined as 2R,3R,8S and 5R,6S by calculating their ECD spectra to compare with the experimental CD spectra. Finally, the antimicrobial activities were evaluated to Erwinia carotovora sub sp. Carotovora (Jones) Bersey et al, and the results showed that compounds 1 - 3 displayed the antimicrobial activities with MIC value at 20.5, 30.4 and 10.2 mg/mL.
Study on Fatigue Performance of Arc Notch of Diaphragm in Steel Box Girder

Steel box girders are easily subjected to fatigue cracking under the vehicle loading, and the crack initiating from arc notch of diaphragm is one of the typical fatigue details. The stress characteristics of diaphragm and U-rib in real bridge under the vehicle loading were analysed, as well as the deformation characteristics. Experimental work on fatigue crack propagation and bearing capacity was conducted. Simulations using the fi nite-element method were undertaken, and the crack propagation behaviours were studied. It is found that the out-of-plane deformation is the main cause of crack propagation at arc notch of diaphragm in real bridge. Fatigue testing data of 9 diaphragm-rib specimens carried out by the vibration fatigue test system and results of FEM simulations show that the rate and path of fatigue crack propagation changed signifi cantly during the fatigue crack propagation. The fatigue crack initiates as a tensile-shear mixed mode crack and turns to single tensile mode with the increase of crack length.

Background: Emergency department (ED) overcrowding is a problem in many countries including Taiwan. Access block refers to a situation where patients in the emergency department requiring inpatient care are unable to gain access to appropriate hospital beds within a reasonable time frame (more than 8 hours total time in the emergency department). Access block is one major reason of ED overcrowding. Methods: A new holistic care unit was established in our medical center in Taiwan in July 2012, with the attending physicians including internal medicine physicians and a neurologist. The patients who required hospitalized treatment were referred to internal medicine physicians in the emergency department. The new department was comprised of seven experienced medical attending physician to take care of the patients directly, with 8-hour duty work shifts within 24 hours, in collaboration with emergency physicians, radiologists, nurses, social workers and case managers to form a team. This team had similar three-shift work duty, education and training programs, and they shared medical devices and resources. If beds in the intensive care unit or ward are not available immediately, procedures and treatment can be performed in the holistic care unit. The pediatric patients were excluded from this study. Results: In total, 26,623 patients were admitting to ward from our emergency department from August 2011 to July 2012, and 23,790 patients from August 2012 to July 2013. The rate of access block decreased from 55.29% to 50.01% ( p < 0.01) after holistic care unit was established. The mean time of ED length of stay was also improved from 18.04 hours to 15.43 hours ( p < 0.01). Conclusions: The newly established holistic care unit in our hospital improved the quality of medical care, not only physiologically but also psychologically.

A series of Ag3PO4/BiOCOOH composite photocatalysts have been successfully synthesized by a simple in situ ion precipitation method. The crystallinity, morphology, microstructure, composition and optical property were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), Fourier transform infrared spectrometer (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UVVis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer (DRS). The as-prepared catalysts exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for the degradation of RhB and MB under visible light irradiation, the 2:1 Ag3PO4/BiOCOOH exhibited the best photocatalytic activity. By adding different free radical scavengers, the catalytic mechanism was discussed. In the process of degradation of RhB, holes (h+) is the main active species, .O-2 played a certain active role, .OH played a small role. In the process of degradation MB, holes (h+) is the main active species too, .O-2 also played a certain active role, .OH almost does not work.

A rapidly declining birthrate in Taiwan has placed pressure on universities to bolster waning enrollment. At the same time, Mainland China is becoming an enormous exporter of international students, and the close geographic proximity between Taiwan and China has resulted in many Chinese students enrolling in Taiwanese institutions. Between 2012 and 2013, over 75% of Chinese exchange students studied in the United States, Great Britain, Australia, or Canada. In contrast, Taiwan was unable to attract a meaningful number of these students. Thus, the issue of whether institutions in Taiwan appeal to Mainland Chinese students is worthy of exploration. This study recruited 228 Chinese students that studied at universities in 2012 in order to identify factors that influenced the enrollment of students from Mainland China in Taiwan. Survey results led us to four important findings as follows: 1) sociocultural and school-related factors had the biggest influence on the decision to study in Taiwan; 2) college selection did not influence pull factors, learning satisfaction, or the intention to pursue further education; 3) school-related and personal factors influenced learning satisfaction as well as the intention to pursue further education; and 4) learning satisfaction has a direct and mediating influence on the intention to pursue further education. These findings yield recommendations that can serve as a reference for Taiwanese universities.

Finite difference analysis were applied to study the principle operation of monopole antenna for moisture determination in oil palm fruit at 2 GHz. The electromagnetic field interact with oil palm fruit on the interface between the antenna and oil palm fruit and cause a reflection. The reflection measurement is based on mismatch impedance or dielectric properties between two media. Reflection coefficient is used to quantify the level of reflection. The monopole antenna was made of RG405/U semi-rigid coaxial cable with an inner and outer diameter of 0.45 mm and 1.50 mm, respectively with 2.23 mm length of protruding conductor over 5.66 cm length of monopole antenna. This monopole antenna for moisture detection was compared with induced EMF method in terms of reflection coefficient at 2 GHz. The results show that the complex reflection coefficient measured using monopole antenna provides significant results to predict moisture content in oil palm fruit.
Role of P14 and MGMT Gene Methylation in Hepatocellular Carcinomas: a Meta-analysis

Background: This meta-analysis was performed to investigate the relationship between methylation of the P14 and O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT) genes and the risk of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Materials and Methods: We searched PubMed, EMBASE, the Chinese Biomedical Database (CBM), and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) databases to identify relevant studies that analysed HCC tissues for P14 and MGMT gene methylation status; we then performed a meta-analysis. Odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (95%CIs) were calculated to evaluate the association between gene methylation and the risk of HCC. Results: Ten studies that assessed P14 gene methylation in 630 HCC tumour tissues and nine studies analysing MGMT methylation in 497 HCC tumour tissues met our inclusion criteria. Our meta-analysis revealed that the rate of P14 methylation was significantly higher in HCCs than in adjacent tissues (OR 3.69, 95%CI 1.63-8.35, p=0.002), but there was no significant difference in MGMT methylation between HCC and adjacent tissues (OR 1.76, 95%CI 0.55-5.64, p=0.34). A subgroup analysis according to ethnicity revealed that P14 methylation was closely related to the risk of HCC in Chinese and Western individuals (Chinese, OR 7.74, 95%CI 1.36-44.04, p=0.021; Western, OR 3.60, 95%CI 1.49-8.69, p=0.004). Furthermore, MGMT methylation was not correlated with the risk of HCC in Chinese individuals (OR 2.42, 95%CI 0.76-7.73, p=0.134). The combined rate of P14 methylation was 35% (95%CI 24-48%) in HCC tumour tissues and 11% (95%CI 4-27%) in adjacent tissues, whereas the combined rate of MGMT methylation was 15% (95%CI 6-32%) in HCC and 10% (95%CI 4-22%) in adjacent tissues. Conclusions: These results suggest that the risk of HCC is related to P14 methylation, but not MGMT methylation. Therefore, P14 gene methylation may be a potential biomarker for the diagnosis of HCC.

Concurrent involvement of bilateral renal and cerebral arteries, usually incurred as stenosis is rare in childhood-onset Takayasu arteritis (c-TA). We report the case of a 14-year-old girl, with c-TA, presenting with transient ischemic attack after endovascular revascularization for renal artery stenosis and cerebrovascular stroke after surgical revascularization for cerebral artery stenosis associated with childhood-onset moyamoya syndrome. We deem th decrease of blood pressure by endovascular revascularization and improvement of cerebral perfusion by surgical revascularization may have jeopardized the cerebral deep watershed zone to cerebral ischemia followed by cerebral hyperperfusion syndrome and caused transient ischemic attack and cerebrovascular stroke in our patient. Revascularization could be a double-edge sword for c-TA patients presenting with concomitant renal artery stenosis and cerebral artery stenosis, and should be performed with caution. Quantitative analysis of cerebral blood flow by brain magnetic resonance imaging and angiography should be performed within 48 hours after surgical revascularization in c-TA.

The UL49.5 gene of most herpesviruses is conserved andencodes glycoprotein N. However, the UL49.5 protein ofduck enteritis virus (DEV) (pUL49.5) has not been reported. In the current study, the DEV pUL49.5 gene was firstsubjected to molecular characterization. To verify thepredicted intracellular localization of gene expression, therecombinant plasmid pEGFP-C1/pUL49.5 was constructedand used to transfect duck embryo fibroblasts. Next, therecombinant plasmid pDsRed1-N1/ glycoprotein M (gM)was produced and used for co-transfection with thepEGFP-C1/pUL49.5 plasmid to determine whether DEVpUL49.5 and gM (a conserved protein in herpesviruses)colocalize. DEV pUL49.5 was thought to be an envelopeglycoprotein with a signal peptide and two transmembranedomains. This protein was also predicted to localize in thecytoplasm and endoplasmic reticulum with a probability of66.7%. Images taken by a fluorescence microscope atdifferent time points revealed that the DEV pUL49.5 andgM proteins were both expressed in the cytoplasm. Overlapof the two different fluorescence signals appeared 12 h aftertransfection and continued to persist until the end of theexperiment. These data indicate a possible interaction between DEV pUL49.5 and gM.
