Gothic Translatio Studii: Menippea in Walpole`s The Castle of Otranto

Vol.61 No.1

There are two immediate implications for Horace Walpole’s The Castle of Otranto (1764): first, a revised sense of the category of Gothic; and second, a revised sense of Menippean satire in eighteenth-century England. The Castle of Otranto is not a Gothic novel as we understand that category to be constituted, precisely because the Gothic coalesced as a category after, and only because of, Otranto’s initial publication. So rather than being the beginning of the Gothic tradition, Otranto is the culmination of another Menippean satire. Building on the work of M.M. Bakhtin’s Problems of Dostoevsky’s Poetics and Rosemary Jackson’s Fantasy: The Literature of Subversion, I argue that The Castle of Otranto is menippean not because of what it cites, but rather because of the way in which it cites. Most approaches to Gothic literature concern themselves with the problems of subjectivity, with the ways in which the subject and its psyche are fissured. A menippean reading of The Castle of Otranto likewise privileges fissures, but it looks for them in the gaps between generic systems. As a mode that infects literature from numerous different genres, menippea allows us to get away from questions of where texts belong, and allows us to ask questions of where a text has been and where it is going. An examination of Otranto’s Greco-Roman origins paradoxically reveals an increasingly determined relationship with tradition and also the text’s significantly liberated stance from tradition.

Eros and Orthography in Bleak House: Aristotelian, Reader-Response, and Narratological Approaches to Jo

Vol.0 No.62

Following its author`s explicit wishes, Dickens`s Bleak House is often read as a protest literature. As ideologically satisfying as propaganda is, this paper begins from an inherent paradox at the heart Dickens`s realism: that in order to make a moral point about the sad state of humanity, the text deploys stock characters. However, as stock characters by definition are not fully realized humans, the political points they make cannot serve a larger moral agenda. This paper, then, seeks to recuperate Bleak House`s most endearing stock character, Jo, by offering a re-evaluation of him through narratology, the scientific study of narrative and reader-response criticism, an approach that authorizes the reader`s role in reacting to a text. This paper offers a new model for the study of narrative, Aristotle`s metaphysics as outlined in two treatises, Metaphysics and On the Soul, models that are essentially and necessarily humane. Ultimately, “Eros and Orthography” offers a metaphysics of Victorian realist literature that recuperates Jo and the text`s social agenda.

"Arms and a Man" 부터 "Books and a Balance"까지: 미국 St.John`s College에서의 고전의 수용으로서의 고전적 전통

Vol.0 No.66

이 논문은 가장 성공적이며, 거의 논란의 여지가 없이, 가장 “극단적”인 Great Books 커리큘럼인 St.John`s College (미국)의 The New Program의 유래, 목표 그리고 이데올로기를 탐구한다. Facio liberos ex liberis libris libraque, “By means of books and a balance, I make free citizens from children” -뿐 아니라 지난 75년 간의 기록물, 공식적 대학 출판물, 커리큘럼 데이터 그리고 그 프로그램의 조수들과 비방하는 사람들의 글들을 조사하고 검토하며 St..John`s와 Classics를 근본적으로 비슷하며 서로 동조적인 “친지관계”로 보는 대중적인 시각과는 다르게, St. John`s의 New Program, 특히 Great Books 프로그램은, 전반적으로, 고전고대의 학문의 변증법적인 부정이라고 주장한다. This paper investigates the origins, aims, and ideology of the most successful and, arguably, most “extreme” Great Books curriculum, The New Program at St. John`s College (USA). Through an examination of The Program`s distinctive motto Facio liberos ex liberis libris libraque, “By means of books and a balance, I make free citizens from children”-as well as archival materials, official college publications, curricular data from the past 75 years, and writings by its acolytes and detractors-I argue that although popular imagination usually conceives of St. John`s and Classics as kith and kin, fundamentally similar to and sympathetic with one another, the St. John`s New Program, specifically, and Great Books programs, in general, turn out to be the dialectical negation of the science of classical antiquity. Moreover, The Program at St. John`s turns out to be a highly contingent, historically specific endeavor, in direct contradiction of its claims to universality and historical detachment.

Vol.39 No.-

A study of the endurance of ancient Greek and Roman fiction in the eighteenth century (an era when the apparently Anglo, seemingly modern Gothic novel came into being), this article unearths undetected yet explicit or nearly explicit allusions to Apuleius’ Golden Ass, Petronius’ Satyricon, Seneca’s Apocolocyntosis, and Virgil’s Aeneid in The Monk, Matthew Lewis’s 1796 Gothic novel par exellence. In particular, I re-examine the role of a lesser-known subplot character, that of Lorenzo’s manservant, Theodore, in which the youth variously writes, tells stories, and then infiltrates the Abbey of St. Claire―a mission that is shown to be decisive, as it both sets into motion the destruction of the abbey, and resolves The Monk’s realist narrative. Darker and more dangerous and violent than its classical antecedents, The Monk transmogrifies the classical tradition, subverting it into a thing of terror and dread. Thus, here I seek to trouble two dominant assumptions―first, that Gothic fiction is a response to the failures of the Enlightenment, and second, that it was invented in 1763 by Horace Walpole. Rather than starting from scratch to depict scandalous plots and mount transgressive critiques, Matthew Lewis mined classical literary history for the very outre and counter-discursive elements that became essential hallmarks of Gothic writing.

Vol.0 No.64

This paper examines the way that two classical Greek philosophical texts, Plato’s Symposium and Aristotle’s Poetics, utilize the historical figure of Alcibiades-known best from a third Greek classic, Thucydides’ History of the Peloponnesian War-as an exemplar in discussions of philosophy. Although most readers of Plato and Aristotle regard the choice as neutral (it could just as easily have been anyone else), I argue that selecting this figure should be seen as a moment of characterization, and moreover, one that challenges the generic distinctions between history and philosophy. Historical facts (Alcibiades’ real-life involvement with the historical figure of Socrates, his notorious political problems in Athens during the civil war with Sparta, etc.) are dramatized in Plato’s work of fiction in order to comment on the limits of history and the failures of philosophy.

Epidemiological Study of Hereditary Hemolytic Anemia in the Korean Pediatric Population during 1997–2016: a Nationwide Retrospective Cohort Study

2020 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.35 No.33

Background: Hereditary hemolytic anemia (HHA) is a rare disease characterized by premature red blood cell (RBC) destruction due to intrinsic RBC defects. The RBC Disorder Working Party of the Korean Society of Hematology established and updated the standard operating procedure for making an accurate diagnosis of HHA since 2007. The aim of this study was to investigate a nationwide epidemiology of Korean HHA. Methods: We collected the data of a newly diagnosed pediatric HHA cohort (2007–2016) and compared this cohort's characteristics with those of a previously surveyed pediatric HHA cohort (1997–2006) in Korea. Each participant's information was retrospectively collected by a questionnaire survey. Results: A total of 369 children with HHA from 38 hospitals distributed in 16 of 17 districts of Korea were investigated. RBC membranopathies, hemoglobinopathies, RBC enzymopathies, and unknown etiologies accounted for 263 (71.3%), 59 (16.0%), 23 (6.2%), and 24 (6.5%) of the cases, respectively. Compared to the cohort from the previous decade, the proportions of hemoglobinopathies and RBC enzymopathies significantly increased (P < 0.001 and P = 0.008, respectively). Twenty-three of the 59 hemoglobinopathy patients had immigrant mothers, mostly from South-East Asia. Conclusion: In Korea, thalassemia traits have increased over the past 10 years, reflecting both increased awareness of this disease and increased international marriages. The enhanced recognition of RBC enzymopathies is due to advances in diagnostic technique; however, 6.5% of HHA patients still do not have a clear diagnosis. It is necessary to improve accessibility of diagnosing HHA.
