The air-side particulate fouling in the heat exchangers of HVAC applications degrades the performance of<br/> cooling capacity, pressure drop across a heat exchanger, and indoor air quality. Indoor and outdoor air<br/> contaminants foul heat exchangers. The purpose of this study is to investigate the fouling characteristics<br/> trough accelerated tests. The fouling characteristics are analyzed as functions of a dust concentration (1.28<br/> and 3.84 g/㎥), a face velocity (0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 m/s), and a surface condition. The cooling capacity in the<br/> slitted finned-tube heat exchangers at the face velocity of 1 m/s decreases about 2% and the pressure drop<br/> increases up to 57%. The rate of build-up of fouling is observed to be 3 times slower for this three-fold<br/> reduction of dust concentration whilst still approaching the same asymptotic level.

<P>Angelica tenuissima has been traditionally used in oriental medicine for its therapeutic effects in headache, toothache, and flu symptoms. It also exerts anti-inflammatory activity via the inhibition of the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2). However, the effect of Angelica tenuissima on osteoclast differentiation has not been identified until recently. In this study, we first confirmed that Angelica tenuissima water extract (ATWE) significantly interrupted the formation of tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP)-positive multinucleated cells (MNCs) in a dose-dependent manner without any cytotoxicity. Next, we clarified the underlying mechanisms linking the suppression effects of ATWE on the receptor activator of nuclear factor-κB ligand (RANKL)-induced osteoclastogenesis. At the molecular level, ATWE induced the dephosphorylation of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) and Akt and decreased the degradation of IκB in RANKL-dependent early signaling pathways. Subsequently, ATWE caused impaired activation of the protein and mRNA levels of c-Fos and nuclear factor of activated T cell c1 (NFATc1). Moreover, the disassembly of filamentous actin (F-actin) ring and anti-resorptive activity of mature osteoclasts were triggered by ATWE treatment. Although ATWE did not enhance osteogenesis in primary osteoblasts, our results showed that ATWE is a potential candidate for anti-resorptive agent in osteoporosis, a common metabolic bone disorder.</P>

<P>Here, we demonstrate that chemical reduction of oxide layers on metal nanostructures fuses junctions at nanoscale to improve the opto-electrical performance, and to ensure environmental stability of the interconnected nanonetwork. In addition, the reducing reaction lowers the adhesion force between metal nanostructures and substrates, facilitating the detachment of them from substrates. Detached metal nanonetworks can be easily floated on water and transferred onto various substrates including hydrophobic, floppy, and curved surfaces. Utilizing the detached metal nanostructures, semitransparent organic photovoltaics is fabricated, presenting the applicability of proposed reduction treatment in the device applications.</P>

Depression is common after acute coronary syndrome (ACS), adversely affecting cardiac course and prognosis. There have been only a few evidence-based treatment options for depression in ACS. Accordingly, we planned the Korean Depression in ACS (K-DEPACS) study, which investigated depressive disorders in patients with ACS using a naturalistic prospective design, and the Escitalopram for DEPACS (EsDEPACS) trial, which assessed the efficacy and safety of escitalopram for treating major or minor depression in patients with ACS. Participants in the K-DEPACS study were consecutively recruited from patients with ACS who were recently hospitalized at Chonnam National University Hospital, Gwangju, South Korea. Diagnoses were confirmed by coronary angiography from 2005. Data on depressive and cardiovascular characteristics were obtained at 2 weeks, 3 months, 12 months, and every 6 months thereafter following the index ACS admission. The K-DEPACS participants who met the DSM-IV criteria for major or minor depressive disorder were randomly assigned to groups in the 24-week, double-blind, placebo-controlled EsDEPACS trial beginning in 2007. The outcome of treatments for depressive and other psychiatric symptoms, issues related to safety, including general adversity, and cardiovascular factors were assessed. The K-DEPACS study can significantly contribute to research on the complex relationships between depression and ACS. The results of the EsDEPACS trial provide an additional treatment option for clinicians treating these patients.

Objectives Isolated Transverse Process Fracture(ITPF) is a rare traumatic spinal disease that has been fractured in transverse process alone in vertebra. This study reports the effectiveness of Korean medicine treatment in ITPF patient. Methods The patient was treated with acupuncture, pharmacopuncture and herbal medicine for 28 days. EuroQol-5 dimension index(EQ-5D), Numerical rating scale(NRS), Oswestry disability index(ODI), lumbar Range of motion(ROM) were used for assessment. Results After treatment, NRS for low back pain decreased from 5 to 2. EQ-5D improved from 0.215 to 0.76, ODI from 82 to 31.11 and lumbar ROM also improved. Conclusions This case shows that Korean medicine treatment can be considered as effective treatment for ITPF.
