        Changes of Gene Expressions in Spontaneously Hypertensive Rat Model After Losartan Treatment

        Background and Objectives: The renin angiotensin system seems to play an important role in the development of cardiac and vascular hypertrophy in hypertension. The changes in pathology, and gene expressions of the angiotensin II receptor type 1A (ATIA) and angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) were investigated in order to explore the effects of losartan in spontaneously hypertensive rat (SHR) models. Materials and Methods: Twelve week-old male Wistar rats were grouped as follows: control (C) group, hypertension (H) group, and losartan (L) group in which SHR was treated with losartan (10 mg/kg/day). Western blot and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction analysis regarding seven genes such as endothelin-1, ACE, ATIA, neutrophil cytosolic factor, brain natriuretic peptide, troponin I, endothelial nitric oxide synthase were performed. Results: Systolic blood pressure was significantly decreased in the L group compared with the H group in weeks 3 and 5. ACE and ATIA proteins in the L group were lower than H group in week 5. Conclusion: Losartan reduced blood pressure, cardiac hypertrophy and protein expressions of ACE and ATIA. Changes of protein expressions were more sensitive than changes in pathology. Further study is needed for the differing doses of losartan in SHR models.

        Qualities of groundwater source used for production of commercial bottled waters in Korea

        Due to skepticism among the population regarding the quality of municipal piped water, the production and consumption of commercial bottled water have been largely increasing in Korea since 1995. This is when commercial sale of bottled water (known as natural mineral water), sourced from groundwater, was first permitted by the Korean government. The Drinking Water Management Act has led to regular and intensive monitoring of original groundwater quality and environmental impact survey required for commercial bottled water production. The Act enforces regular quality analyses of groundwater source and bottled water every quater. To obtain an official permit for production of bottled water, an extremely intensive environmental impact survey is mandatory, including chemical analyses of the original groundwater and an in-depth analysis of sustainable groundwater quantity. A total of 630 data sets pertaining to original groundwater quality for bottled water production, surrounding groundwater, and nearby stream water at bottled water production sites in Korea revealed that arsenic, nitrate, and fluoride are the most frequently occurring contaminants, even though their values adhere to the Korean drinking water standards. Therefore, continued monitoring and management of these contaminants is required for sustainable production of bottled water.

        Comparison of elective inguinal node irradiation techniques in anal cancer

        Purpose: To compare photon thunderbird with deep match (technique 1) with 3-field technique with electron inguinal boost (technique 2) in acute skin toxicity, toxicity-related treatment breaks and patterns of failure in elective inguinal radiation therapy (RT) for curative chemoradiation in anal cancer. Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients treated between January 2008 and September 2010 without evidence of inguinal and distant metastasis were retrospectively reviewed. In 9 patients with technique 1, dose to inguinal and whole pelvis area was 41.4 to 45 Gy and total dose was 59.4 Gy. In 8 patients with technique 2, doses to inguinal, whole pelvis, gross tumor were 36 to 41.4 Gy, 36 to 41.4 Gy, and 45 to 54 Gy, respectively. The median follow-up period was 27.6 and 14.8 months in group technique 1 and 2, respectively. Results: The incidences of grade 3 radiation dermatitis were 56% (5 patients) and 50% (4 patients), dose ranges grade 3 dermatitis appeared were 41.4 to 50.4 Gy and 45 to 54 Gy in group technique 1 and 2, respectively (p = 0.819). The areas affected by grade 3 dermatitis in 2 groups were as follow: perianal and perineal areas in 40% and 25%, perianal and inguinal areas in 0% and 50%, and perianal area only in 60% and 25%, respectively (p = 0.196). No inguinal failure has been observed. Conclusion: Photon thunderbird with deep match technique and 3-field technique with electron inguinal boost showed similar incidence of radiation dermatitis. However, photon thunderbird with deep match seems to increase the possibility of severe perineal dermatitis.

        또래교수법이 수학 문제해결과 수업 만족도에 미치는 영향

        본 연구의 목적은 또래교수를 통해 고등학교 이차곡선 단원에 대한 수업을 진행한 후 문제해결능력과 수업 만족도에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 분석하여 향후 교수학습과정에 시사점을 제시하는 것이다. 이를 위해 고등학교 2학년 자연계열 학생 76명을 연구 대상으로 선정하여 또래교수법을 활용한 수업을 진행하였다. 수업이 종료된 후에 <이차곡선 문제해결능력 검사지>의 사전-사후 검사 점수 비교와 <수업 만족도 검사지>를 분석한 결과 또래교수법을 통해 친밀한 학습 환경, 개별화된 학습 내용, 자유로운 학습 과정을 통한 학습 동기유발은 학습자 간 상호작용을 촉진할 가능성이 있기 때문에 문제해결능력과 수업 만족도에 긍정적인 영향을 미쳤다고 볼 수 있었다. 이러한 결과를 바탕으로 향후 이차곡선을 지도할 때 또래교수의 중요성과 가치를 인식하여 실제 고등학교 수업에 활용할 수 있도록 시사점을 제공하고자 한다.

        Feasibility of Sorafenib Combined with Local Radiotherapy in Advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma

        Purpose: Sorafenib is an effective systemic agent for advanced hepatocellular carcinoma. To increase its efficacy, we evaluated the feasibility and benefit of sorafenib combined with radiotherapy. Materials and Methods: From July 2007 to July 2011, 31 patients were treated with a daily dose of 800 mg of sorafenib and radiotherapy. Among them, 13 patients who received radiotherapy on the bone metastasis were excluded. Thirteen patients received 30-54 Gy of radiotherapy on the primary tumor (primary group) and 5 patients received 30-58.4 Gy on the measurable metastatic lesions (measurable metastasis group). Tumor responses at 1 month after the completion of radiotherapy and overall survival were evaluated. Results: The in-field response rate was 100% in the primary group and 60% in the measurable metastasis group. A decrease of more than 80% in the tumor marker α-fetoprotein was observed in 7 patients in the primary group (54%). Toxicities of grades 3-4 were hand-foot syndrome in 3 (17%) patients, duodenal bleeding in 1 (6%) patient, thrombocytopenia in 3 (17%) patients and elevation of aspartate transaminase in 1 (6%) patient. The median overall survival was 7.8 months (95% confidence interval, 3.0-12.6). Conclusion: The combined treatment of sorafenib and radiotherapy was feasible and induced substantial tumor responses in the target lesions. The results of this study emphasize the importance of individualized approach in the management of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma and encourage the initiation of a controlled clinical trial.

        백워드 디자인에 기반한 고등학교 가정교과 금융소비자교육 프로그램 개발

        The purpose of this study was to develop a high school home economics financial consumer education program based on backward design and validation by experts. The program was designed and developed by first selecting learning content elements through a review of existing research and an analysis of relevant literature. The next step was to categorize these elements into seven themes and apply the backward design instructional design model 2.0. The program was prepared in the form of a 21st teaching-learning course plan and workbook and was verified by nine home economics teachers with working experience in high school. The evaluation revealed that the average value for all questions was 3.81 (out of 4 points) and the CVR was .99, indicating that the program was valid. In addition, positive evaluations were received in terms of learning goals, content level, and learner participation by class. This study has significance in that a systematic financial consumer education program was developed by Education of Home Economics to improve the financial literacy of high school students. It can therefore be used as an elective course (mini-course) in Home Economics in the high school credit system. A follow-up study will be required to assess the improvement in financial literacy after implementing this program.

        미래 에너지원으로서 자연 수소의 발생, 기작과 분포에 대한 고찰

        Natural hydrogen has recently emerged as a promising energy source due to its environment-friendly and highly efficient potential as a fuel, attracting interest from various countries including Australia, Brazil, USA and many European countries for research and investigation. This paper aims to provide a deep exploration of the occurrence mechanism and distribution of natural hydrogen, including its underground existence, geological factors regulating underground distribution, geochemical processes, and mantle origin. To achieve this, we have synthesized research findings on natural hydrogen from high-quality research papers indexed in the international scholarly database, Web of Science. Through this process, our goal is to enhance our understanding of natural hydrogen as a viable energy option for addressing current electrical, geological, and climatic challenges and for a sustainable future. 자연 수소는 환경 친화적이며 에너지 효율이 높은 연료로서의 잠재력 때문에 최근 유망한 에너지원으로 부상했고 호주, 브라질, 미국과 여러 유럽 국가들이 큰 관심을 가지고 연구와 조사를 하고 있다. 이 논문에서는 자연 수소의 지하 존재, 지하 분포를 조절하는 지질학적 요인, 지구화학적 과정 및 맨틀 기원에 대한 자연 수소의발생 기작과 분포에 대한 심층적인 탐구를 제공하는 것을 목표로 하였다. 이를 위해 국제적인 학술색인인 Web of Science에 등재된 연구논문들을 대상으로 자연 수소에 대한 연구결과들을 종합하였고 이를 통해 당면한 전지구적 기후변화 대응 및 지속 가능한 미래를 위한 실행 가능한 에너지 옵션으로서 자연 수소에 대한 우리의 이해를 높이는 것을 목표로 하였다.
