Diagnosis of Enterococcus hirae infection in association with piglet diarrhea

Various viral and bacterial pathogens interact with environmental factors to cause diarrhea in piglets. Enterococcus spp. are Gram-positive anaerobic bacteria that are commonly found in the gastrointestinal tract of several animal species, including pigs. Enterococcus spp. have been reported to infect several animal species as a pathogen. However, gastrointestinal infection by Enterococcus hirae is rare in pigs; only a few cases have been reported worldwide. Four piglets with diarrhea were examined in the diagnostic laboratory of Optipharm Inc. (Cheongju, Korea). During the initial post-mortem examination, no disease lesions were observed. Upon microscopic examination, we found numerous Gram-positive cocci that were adhered to epithelial villi in the jejunum and ileum. However, the villi did not exhibit significant structural damage. Cultured bacteria were identified as E. hirae using the VITEK 2 system and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Using PCR, we also confirmed that viruses and protozoa that can potentially infect piglet intestines were absent. In antibiotic susceptibility test, the bacteria were resistant to most types of antibiotics. This study presents rare cases of E. hirae infection of the piglet small intestine, which can occur in association with diarrhea possibly by the continuous use of antibiotics.

The vomeronasal organ (VNO) is critical for reproduction and social behavior in ruminants, including cattle. The present study examined the structure of the VNO and its epithelial cells in neonatal and adult Korean native cattle (Hanwoo), Bos taurus coreanae , using immunohistochemistry and lectin histochemistry. Histologically, the VNO comprised two types of epithelia: medial vomeronasal sensory (VSE) and lateral vomeronasal non-sensory epithelia (VNSE). Numerous blood vessels and nerve bundles were observed within the vomeronasal cartilage encased lamina propria. Immunohistochemistry revealed high expression level of protein gene product9.5 and moderate expression level of olfactory marker protein in the neuroreceptor cells of the VSE and occasionally in some ciliated cells of the VNSE in both neonates and adults. The properties of the glycoconjugates in the VNO were investigated using 21 lectins, most of which were expressed at varied intensities in the VSE and VNSE, as well as in the lamina propria. Several lectins exhibited variations in their intensities and localization between neonatal and adult VNOs. This study is the first descriptive lectin histochemical examination of the VNO of Korean native cattle with a focus on lectin histochemistry, confirming that the VNO of Korean native cattle is differentiated during postnatal development.
Casein kinase 2 is a critical determinant of the balance of Th17 and Treg cell differentiation

Th17 cells promote inflammatory reactions, whereas regulatory T (Treg) cells inhibit them. Thus, the Th17/Treg cell balance is critically important in inflammatory diseases. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying this balance are unclear. Here, we demonstrate that casein kinase 2 (CK2) is a critical determinant of the Th17/Treg cell balance. Both the inhibition of CK2 with a specific pharmacological inhibitor, CX-4945, and its small hairpin RNA (shRNA)-mediated knockdown suppressed Th17 cell differentiation but reciprocally induced Treg cell differentiation in vitro. Moreover, CX-4945 ameliorated the symptoms of experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis and reduced Th17 cell infiltration into the central nervous system. Mechanistically, CX-4945 inhibited the IL-6/STAT3 and Akt/mTOR signaling pathways. Thus, CK2 has a crucial role in regulating the Th17/Treg balance.

Objectives : The purpose of this research is to study the effect of Ginger-Herbal acupuncture on shoulder pain of cerebral paralytic patients. Methods : 53 person were selected among patients hospitalized in Dong-eui Oriental medical hospital from !st, May, 2005 to 1st, Oct, 2005. They were divided into two groups, i.e acupuncture group and ginger-herbal acupuncture group. For 2 weeks, 22 patients were treated by ginger-herbal acupuncture treatments and 31 patients were treated by only acupuncture treatments. Research tools are Visual Analogue Scale by Cline et al. for measuring the severity of shoulder pain, and measured Range of Movement of shoulder joint Results : The ginger-herbal acupuncture treatments group showed significant pain decrease while acupuncture treatments group showed pain decrease. The range of shoulder movement was not significantly improved in both 2 groups. Conclusion : Based on the above results, it can be determined that ginger-herbal acupuncture therapy can be used as the effective treatments for reducing of shoulder pain. But more cases are to be studied in order to make more effective treatments in the case of shoulder pain of paralytic patients.
Histological Features of the Testis in the Long-beaked Common Dolphin from Korean Waters

The present study examined the histological characteristics of adult testis in the long-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus capensis) from Korean waters and the localization of DEAD-box polypeptide 4 (DDX4; a germ cell marker)and vimentin (a Sertoli cell marker) expression in the dolphin testis compared with that in terrestrial mammals, including dogs and rats. The seminiferous tubules of dolphin testis have very small or completely closed lumens, and spermatogenic cells and Sertoli cells within the tubules cannot be differentiated. Immunohistochemical analysis showed that, in the dolphin testis, DDX4- and vimentin-positive cells were scattered extensively within the tubule, whereas in the dog and rat testis, DDX4 immunoreactivity was localized in spermatogenic cells of the adluminal compartment,and vimentin immunoreactivity was localized in Sertoli cells of the basal compartment in the seminiferous epithelium. These results suggest that the histological characteristics of the seminiferous tubules in the dolphin testis differ from those of terrestrial species.

Objective : The purpose of this study is comparison of clinical treatment outcome between oriental medicine group and oriental-western medicine group about Bell's palsy Methods : We measured the facial palsy changes of the patients who were admitted for Bell's palsy in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dong-eui medical center from 07-01-2003 to 07-12-2004. Bell's palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was treated by Oriental medicine treatment. The other group(B group) was treated by Oriental-Western medicine treatment. The effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : B group was marked more higher than A group in treatment outcome. We discovered that it is significant differences between two groups after 1 week and after 2 week in treatment stage. Conclusion : These results provided that B group was more effective than A group in treatment of Bell's palsy. For clearly comparing the effect of Oriental medicine treatment and Oriental-Western medicine treatment on Bell's palsy, more numbers of sample and longer duration of treatment are needed.

Destroying the marine environment and marine ecosystem and causing marine accidents, marine debris is generated every year, and among them, submerged marine debris is difficult to identify and collect because it is on the seabed. Therefore, deep-learning-based semantic segmentation was experimented on waste fish nets and waste ropes using underwater images to identify efficient collection and distribution. For segmentation, a high-resolution network (HRNet), a state-of-the-art deep learning technique, was used, and the performance of each optimizer was compared. In the segmentation result fish net, F1 score=(86.46%, 86.20%, 85.29%), IoU=(76.15%, 75.74%, 74.36%), For the rope F1 score=(80.49%, 80.48%, 77.86%), IoU=(67.35%, 67.33%, 63.75%) in the order of adaptive moment estimation (Adam), Momentum, and stochastic gradient descent (SGD). Adam's results were the highest in both fish net and rope. Through the research results, the evaluation of segmentation performance for each optimizer and the possibility of segmentation of marine debris in the latest deep learning technique were confirmed. Accordingly, it is judged that by applying the latest deep learning technique to the identification of submerged marine debris through underwater images, it will be helpful in estimating the distribution of marine sedimentation debris through more accurate and efficient identification than identification through the naked eye.

Methods : We measured the facial palsy changes of the patients who were admitted for Bell's palsy in the Oriental Medical hospital of Dongeui medical center from 03-01-2004 to 07-31-2004. Bell's palsy patients were divided into two groups. One group(A group) was injected with Hominis Placenta herbal acupuncture. The other group(B group) was injected with normal saline. Then effects of these treatment was evaluated by Yanagihara's unweighted grading system. Results : A group was marked more higher than B group in treatment outcome. we discovered that it is significant differences between two groups after 4 week. Conclusions : These results provided that A group is more effective than B group. For clearly proving the effect of Hominis Placenta herbal acupuncture on Bell's palsy, it is need more sample's number and more treatment's duration.
