A novel α-Gal resin was chemo-enzymatically synthesized for the efficient adsorption of anti-α-Gal antibodies in human serum for xenotransplantation. To covalently conjugate a hexanoate linker with lactose and N-acetylglucosamine, both acceptor sugars were acetylated and brominated. Then, α- and β-galactoses were sequentially added to the linker-containing saccharides at their non-reducing ends by using recombinant α-(1,3)- and β-(1,4)-galactosyltransferases from E. coli. Finally, the synthesized α-Gal derivatives were immobilized on HiCore, a core-shell type resin, that was functionalized with amino groups on the shell region, as a packing material on-column. Using this method we were able to demonstrate that the α-Gal HiCore resin had a reduced level of non-specific protein adsorption compared with the commercially available polystyrene supports, TentaGel, and agarose-based supports, when Lectin BS-I was used as the model binding protein. Furthermore, the α-Gal HiCore resin was more efficient at eliminating anti-α-Gal IgGs from the total human IgGs through immunoadsorption than the other two α-Gal resins, α-Gal TentaGel and α-Gal agarose. The α-Gal HiCore resin developed in this study can be utilized in a wide range of applications including ex vivo immunoadsorption and as a quantitative assay of anti-Gal anti-body in human sera.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the pregnancy and childbirth experience of unmarried teenage mothers and to provide basic information of programmes to prevent unplanned pregnancies in unmarried teenage mothers. Methods: The participants of study were 7 unmarried teenage mothers who lived in shelters in D city, and whose ages ranged from 15 to 19 years. Data gathering through in-depth interviews, 3 to 5 times, was done from August 2002 to September 2003. Data were analyzed with Colaizzi’s(1978) phenomenological methodology. Results: The implications of pregnancy and childbirth experience for unmarried teenage mothers were “Seem to live in hell”, “Desire for a miscarriage”, “Lethargy”, “Feel maternity”, “Feel unjustified”, and “Change of sexual perception”. Conclusion: These findings contribute to understanding the pregnancy and childbirth experience of unmarried teenage mothers and can be used as sexual education information to help unmarried teenage mothers to prevent further unplanned pregnancies.

본 연구는 [우리를 존재하게 하는 뿌리 찾기] 프로그램 구안, 적용을 통한 효, 경 의식 내면화 방안으로 우리들 주변의 할아버지, 할머니(이웃 어르신) 또는 부모님들의 전기문 쓰기를 통하여 실천적이고 적극적인 효, 경 의식을 내면화하기 위한 연구이다. 학생들에게 할머니, 할아버지, 이웃 어르신들의 생애에 대해 취재하고 개요를 짜 전기문을 써 봄으로써 선조들의 생활 모습을 알게하고 경로효친 정신을 내면화할 수 있었다. 학생들은 전기문을 쓰기 위해 취재하면서 그분들이 일제강점기를 겪어낸 대목에선 애국심을, 6.25전쟁 체험 부분에선 통일의 중요성을 온갖 어려움 속에서도 자식 교육을 위해 헌신하신 60-70년대에는 잘 살아보려 노력했던 근면 정신과 인내심과 자녀에 대한 높은 교육열 헌신적인 가족애 등을 배우게 되었다고 소감문을 통해 밝혔고 효, 경의식 내면화를 위한 설문지 전후 비교를 통해서도 확인할 수 있었다.

Joyce Carol Oates who has naturalistic tendency deals with American hunger which is very insatiable in American Appetites (1989) that seems to be a parodic allusion to An American Tragedy (1925) by Theodore Dreiser, one of American naturalists. American hunger is closely related to an unquenchable desire to accomplish the American dream that embraces an aspiration for higher socio-economic status and class. Craving and yearning for the American dream is a critical issue in American Appetites. While Dreiser in An American Tragedy depicts one ambitious man’s struggles to be upwardly mobile and its tragic consequences, Oates in American Appetites explores one self-made man’s tragic story after his success to fulfill his own American dream. This study aims to explore the characteristics of deep-rooted hunger lingering in American life and culture, examining Ian McCullough’s life and hunger in American Appetites.

Advances in mass spectrometry have enabled the investigation of various biological systems by directly analyzing diverse sets of biomolecules (i.e., proteins, lipids, and carbohydrates), thus making a significant impact on the life sciences field. Over the past decade, matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization time-of-flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) has been widely utilized as a rapid and reliable method for the identification of microorganisms. MALDI-TOF MS has come into widespread use despite its relatively low resolving power (full width at half maximum, FWHM: < 5,000) and its incompatibility with tandem MS analysis, features with which other high-resolution mass spectrometers are equipped. Microbial identification is achieved by searching databases containing mass spectra of peptides and proteins extracted from microorganisms of interest, using scoring algorithms to match analyzed spectra with reference spectra. In this paper, we give a brief overview of the diverse applications of rapid and robust MALDI-TOF MS-based techniques for microbial identification in a variety of fields, such as clinical diagnosis and environmental and food monitoring. We also describe the fundamental principles of MALDI-TOF MS. The general specifications of the two major MS-based microbial identification systems available in the global market (BioTyper® and VITEK® MS Plus) and the distribution of these instruments in Republic of Korea are also discussed. The current review provides an understanding of this emerging microbial identification and classification technology and will help bacteriologists and cell biologists take advantage of this powerful technique.

Modeling and FEM analysis on Boron Nitride and/or Pyrolytic Carbon coating layers on SiC fibers under indentation contact loadings are investigated. Especially this study attempts to model the mechanical behavior of the SiC fibers with and without coatings. Tyranno S grade and Tyranno LoxM grade of SiC are selected for fiber and Boron Nitride and/or Pyrolytic Carbon as coating material. The modeling is performed by SiC fiber without coating layer, which includs single(BN or PyC) and double(BN-PyC or PyC-BN) coating layer. And then the analysis is performed by changing a type of coating layer, a type of fiber and coating sequence. In this study, the concepts of modeling and analysis techniques for optimum design of BN and PyC coating process on SiC fiber are shown. Results show that stresses are reduced when indentation contact loading applies on the material having lower elastic modulus.
