This study assessed the Charpy impact properties of the heat-affected zones (HAZs) of API X80 linepipe steels containing complex oxides. Three types of steel were fabricated by adding Mg and O2 to form complex oxides and their microstructures and Charpy impact properties were investigated. The number of complex oxides increased with the amount of excess Mg and O2 that was included in the steels. Simulated HAZs containing a number of oxides showed a high volume fraction of acicular ferrite (AF) because the oxides acted as nucleation sites for AF, thereby leading to an improvement in the Charpy impact properties. According to a correlation study between the heat input, the volume fraction of the AF, and the Charpy impact properties, ductile fractures occurred predominantly when the fraction of the AF was 20% or higher; moreover, the Charpy absorbed energy was excellent at more than 100 J. These findings suggest that the improvement of the Charpy impact properties of the HAZs was associated with the active nucleation of AF in the oxide-containing steel HAZs.

N/A Cushing's disease is a serious endocrinopathy and has the highest incidence of morbidity and mortality among pituitary adenomas. Because pituitary microadenomas, of less than 1 cm in diameter, frequently reveal normal findings in radiological studies including sellar plain X-ray and CT scan, the diagnosis of Cushing's disease caused by microadenoma should by primarily based on endocrinological laboratory tests and adrenal CT scan. Bilateral petrosal venous sinus sampling may be helpful for the preoperative lateralization of microadenoma. A case of Cushing's disease caused by microadenoma, whose differential diagnosis was achieved by the above studies and whose location could be anticipated by petrosal venous sampling, is presented with a literature review.

Propylthiouracil(PTU) is widely used to treat patients with hyperthyroidism. In rare case, this drug has been found to have toxic effects on the liver. W e experienced a case of PTU in- duced hepatitis in a 45 year old woman treated for Graves' disease with PTU. The biochemi- cal pattern of injury was predominantly hepatocellular with moderately elevated transminase values and histologic findings revealed marked micro and macrovesicular fatty changes and focal necrosis of hepatocytes without any zonal difference. Discontinuation of drug leads to complete recovery in this case. Although overt hepatitis due to PTU is probably a rare compli- cation, there is a potential danger of permanent liver damage. Thus it might be advisable to monitor transaminase levels on regular base in patients receiving PTU.(Korean J Gastroenterol 1994; 26: 369 372)

N/A Objective: It has been proposed that the contact between blood and dialysis membrane during hemo-dialysis therapy induces harmful reactions to patients. Membrane biocompatibility is the characteristic that makes less adverse reaction. We tried to compare the biocompatibility between Cuprophane and Polysulfone membranes. Methods: Nine chronic renal failure patients who have undergone maintenance hemrodialysis therapy with Hemophan membrane three times per week were included in this study. Cuprophane membranes were used in the first week: Hemophan membranes in the second week; Polysulfone membranes in the third week. Each membrane was used three times a week. On the day of third dialysis with the Cu-prophane membrane(first week) and Polysulfone membrane(third week), serial blood sampling was obtained from the afferent line at hemodialysis initiation, 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 60 minutes, 120 minutes and 30 minutes to measure serum complement activity(C3a, C5a), blood polymorphonuclear leukocyte and platelet count, and arterial oxygen pressure which have been regarded as biocompatibility par- ameters. The parameters measured during the first week(Cuprophane) and the third week(Polysulfone) were compared to evaluate the difference in bio-compatibility of both membranes. Results: 1) C3a desArg In both groups, the level of C3a desArg increased significantly from basal level and the Cuprophane group showed significantly higher level of C3a desArg than that of Polysulfone group. 2) C5a desArg : In both groups, the level of C5a desArg did not increased sigpificantly from basal level. Only at 30 minute after hemodialysis, Cupro- phane group showed significantly higher level of C5a desArg than that of Polysulfone group(p=0.037). 3) Polymorphonuclear leukocyte : In both groups, the polymorphonuclear leukocyte counts decreased significantly at 15 minutes and 30 minutes from basal level. The polymorphonuclear leukocyte count was lower in Cuprophane group than that of Polysulfone group at 15 minute after hemodialysis(p=0.001). 4) Platelet: In Cuprophane group, the platelet count was decreased significantly at 15 minute(p=0.004) but there were no difference in platelet counts between the two groups. 5) Arterial oxygen pressure Both group showed no consistent pattern of variation of oxygen pressure and there was no significant difference between the two groups. Conclusion: The biocompatibility of Polysulfone membrane was superior to the Cuprophane membrane with respect to the increased activation of complement C3a. decrease of polymorphonuclear leu-kocyte and decrease of platelet count.

The solidification behavior of steel in continuous casting billet mold was examined by plant test, i. e. tracer(FeS) test in mold and solidification modelling. From the above test, it has been found that solid shell grows linearly with time regardless of steel grades in billet mold. Solidification constant k was found to be 32-37㎜/min for low carbon (C%=0.07-0.19) steel, 41-44㎜/min for high carbon(C%=0.40-0.73) steel, respectively. Unevenness of solid shell along the transversal and longitudinal direction for the low carbon steel grade which solidifies as δ ferrite initially was greater than that of high carbon steel grade. When applied an in-mold electro-magnetic stirring(MEMS), solid shell formed uniformly in thickness direction. Finally, measured solid shell profiles in mold were found to agree well with the calculated results from the solidification modelling.

The effect of an in-mold electro-magnetic stirring(MEMS) on the subsurface defects and macrosegregation in the CC billets has been examined by a plant test and a new evaluation method. The reduction behavior of macrosegregation by a combination stirring has also been discussed through analyzing the thicknesswise cast structures at the centre region and mushy zone depending on the various EMS conditions. It is found that the subsurface defects and macrosegregation can effectively be reduced under an optimum stirring condition. The reduction of macrosegregation in CC billets by (M+S+F) EMS appears to be caused by 1) increasing the flow resistance of solute enriched interdendritic liquid in the mushy zone due to highly close-packed fine equiaxed crystals, 2) decreasing the flow distance of solute enriched interdendritic liquid in the mushy zone due to increased solidification rate at the centre region, and 3) decreasing ferrostatic pressure at the time of macrosegregation formation caused by the shortened distance of crater end.
