Purpose: This study was performed to evaluate the effect of powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display on the subjective and objective oral hygiene improvement. Methods: One hundred and fifteen subjects in healthy or mild gingivitis status between the ages of 20 and 90 were recruited and reviewed for study inclusion criteria. At first visit, 115 pre-screened subjects filled in the questionnaire form which consisted of demographic factors, behavioral factors (smoking, alcohol consumption), toothbrushing habits (brushing time and frequency), self-reported oral health status, and self-satisfaction. Baseline clinical indices (Plaque index, Gingival index) were also recorded by a periodontist. Subjects were instructed how to use powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display, and were provided with it. Thirty days after first visit, 90 subjects returned for the second assessment by self-reported questionnaire form and professional clinical checkup. Statistical analysis was performed using paired t-test for the difference between baseline and second visit data. The relationship among variables was examined with chi-square test and Fisher' s exact test. Results: Significant differences were not found on self-reported satisfaction related with sex, smoking, alcohol consumption (P<0.05). Self-reported tooth brushing habit was improved in the aspect of brushing time and frequency. Significant differences were found on the self-reported oral health status, self-satisfaction, and clinical indices between the baseline and second visit data (P<0.01). Clinical indices were significantly reduced after using powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display (P<0.01). No adverse reactions were reported during the study period. Conclusions: Powered toothbrush with a wireless remote display successfully promoted oral hygiene from the subjective and objective viewpoint after 30 days of home usage.
멕시코 B 광산 슬러지에 존재하는 생물학적 광물화 미생물의 특성에 관한 연구

Microbial processes that bind heavy metals and form minerals are widespread, and they represent a basic aspect of biogeochemistry. Some microorganisms can crystallize minerals by secreting a specific enzyme. In particular, calcite ($CaCO_3$) precipitation is an important part of biomineralization, and has been studied extensively because of its wide application in civil engineering technology. This process provides an effective way to stabilize heavy metals within a relatively stable crystal phase. In this study, biomineralization of calcite by three urea-hydrolyzing indigenous bacterial strains was investigated by microbiological analyses. Three bacterial strains were isolated from the sludge of B mine in Mexico and each bacterial strain was identified by the cellular fatty acid composition and 16S rRNA partial sequencing analysis. The results of the identification analysis showed that these strains were closest to Sporosarcina pasteurii, Kurthia gibsonii, and Paenibacillus polymyxa. We found that the optimum conditions for growth of these indigenous bacteria were $30-40^{\circ}C$ and pH range of 7-8. Microbiological analyses showed the possibility that the bioaccumulated heavy metals ions were deposited around the cell as crystalline carbonate minerals under the optimum conditions. The findings of our study suggest that the indigenous bacterial strains play an important role in heavy metal immobilization.
토착미생물의 MICP 기작을 이용한 폐석고 재활용 연구

산업혁명 이후 산업발달과 더불어 폐기물 발생량 또한 크게 증가하였다. 이에 따라 정부에서는 폐기물 발생량을 감소시키는 것과 동시에 폐기물을 효율적으로 처리하고 이용하는 자원순환형 폐기물 관리체계로 전환하기 위해 법적, 제도적 체계를 구축하고 있다. 이러한 체계에 따라 생활폐기물, 건설폐기물, 사업장폐기물이 재활용 되고 있다. 사업장 폐기물 중 폐석고는 건축 공업용 페인트, 인쇄 잉크, 도자기 등을 생산하는 과정에서 발생되는 사업장 폐기물로서 연간 약 400 만톤이 발생되고 있다. 발생된 폐석고는 석고보드 및 농업용으로 재활용 되고 있다. 하지만 재활용되지 못한 잉여분은 매립시설에 매립되고 있는 실정이다. 따라서 다른 추가적인 재활용 방안이 필요하다. 일반적으로 MICP(microbially induced calcite precipitation)는 urea 가수분해 효소를 생성하는 미생물의 urea 분해 메커니즘을 통해 탄산칼슘과 같은 탄산염을 석출시키는 기작을 말한다. 최근 국내·외로 MICP 기작에 대한 연구가 진행되고 있으나 폐석고를 재활용함에 있어 MICP 기작을 이용한 연구는 미흡한 실정이다. 본 연구에서는 매립시설에 매립되는 폐석고의 물리·화학적 전처리를 통해 최적의 칼슘이온 용출 조건을 도출하고, MICP 기작을 통한 탄산칼슘 형성을 확인하여 폐석고를 재활용함에 있어서 MICP 기작을 활용하는 기초자료를 제시하는데 목적을 두었다. 이를 위해 폐석고의 특성을 파악하고자 XRD, XRF, 입도분석을 실시하였으며, 물리·화학적 전처리에 따른 칼슘이온 농도를 ICP-AES로 분석하였다. 특히, 미생물 투입 후 형성된 침전물에 대하여 XRD 및 FE-SEM 이용하여 시료를 분석하였다.
마우스 대식세포를 이용한 어성초(魚腥草) 물추출물의 항염효능연구

The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of Houttuyniae Herba water extract (HC) on calcium release and production of various inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide (NO), interferon-inducible protein (IP)-10, platelet derived growth factor (PDGF)-BB, keratinocyte-derived chemokine (KC), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), interleukin (IL)-4, and IL-5 in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced RAW 264.7 mouse macrophages. Methods : NO production was measured by Griess reagent assay. Intracellular calcium level was measured with Fluo-4 assay. Levels of cytokines were measured by High-throughput multiplex bead array cytokine assay based on xMAP (multi-analyte profiling beads) technology. Results : HC significantly decreased NO production for 24 hrs incubation at the concentrations of 10, 25, 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 (P < 0.05). HC significantly decreased production of IP-10, KC, VEGF, and PDGF-BB for 24 hrs incubation at the concentrations of 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 (P < 0.05). HC also significantly decreased intracellular calcium release for 24 hrs incubation at the concentrations of 25, 50, 100, and 200 ㎍/mL in LPS-induced RAW 264.7 (P < 0.05). But HC did not show any significant effect on production of IL-4 and IL-5 in LPS-induced RAW 264.7.Conclusions : The results suggested that HC has anti-inflammatory property related with its inhibition on the production of NO, IP-10, KC, VEGF, and PDGF-BB in LPS-induced macrophages via calcium pathway

가스 괴저는 외상이나 수술 후에 주로 클로스트리듐에 의해 발생하나 드물게 비클로스트리듐에 의해서도 발생할 수 있다. 저자들은 음주력 외에 당뇨 및 외상이 없던 환자에서 구강 및 위장관의 상재균인 S. constellatus에 의해 가스괴저가 발생한 증례를 최초로 경험하였기에 문헌고찰과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Gas gangrene is usually caused by clostridial species; non-clostridial gas gangrene is infrequently reported. S. constellatus belongs to the Streptococcus milleri group, which are considered part of the normal flora and frequently associated with abscess formation. We report a rare case of spontaneous gas gangrene caused by S. constellatus. An 86-year-old man was admitted with gas gangrene of the left hip. He was treated with surgical debridement of the necrotic tissue, and antibiotic therapy, and had a satisfactory clinical course. (Korean J Med 75:119-121, 2008)
