A variety of surface modification techniques have been proposed to improve the cell-biomaterial interactions. On the other hand, these processes may cleave long-chained polymers, and compromise their mechanical properties. In this study, dopamine was used as a bridge molecule to immobilize gelatin on the poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone) (PLCL) fibrous matrices, which may then be used as a cell delivery carrier. The PLCL fibrous matrices coated with polydopamine by dipping (D-PLCL) can subsequently immobilize gelatin (GD-PLCL). The D-PLCL matrices showed minimal changes in the mechanical properties with a tensile strain of 251.0±33.4% and 247.8±32.1% before and after the coating process, respectively. The cellular activities on the fibrous matrices increased in the order of PLCL<G-PLCL<D-PLCL<GD-PLCL; the H9c2 myoblasts on the GD-PLCL matrices showed approximately two-times higher adhesion and spreading than those on the PLCL matrices, and the proliferation was significantly greater on the GD-PLCL matrices than on the other matrices. Therefore, polydopamine can effectively immobilize the bioactive functional groups on the surface of electrospun fibrous matrices for the development of a tissue specific cell delivery carrier.

In this study, wetting properties of a hierarchical structure using a silicon micro-tip array covered with ZnO nanowire are characterized, and compared with hierarchical structures composed of micro-pillars for micro-scale roughness. The superhydrophobicity of a surface can be efficiently enhanced by using a micro-tip array, compared with a micro-pillar structure, because a micro-tip structure with high aspect ratio and small apex radius can significantly reduce fractions of liquid droplet area in contact, maintaining the droplet in the regime of the Cassie state. The micro-tip array was simply fabricated by combining anisotropic and isotropic silicon etching processes with one-step photolithography and a single etch mask. The measured height and aspect ratio of the fabricated micro-tip was around 40 mm and 8, respectively, when the center-to-center distance between micro-tips was 30 mm. The maximum CA on the hierarchical surface using the micro-tip array was measured to be 165.0 2.3 with a period of 30 mm, while the hierarchical surface using the micro-pillar array showed the maximum CA of 158.6 1.1 with 20 mm-diameter and 70 mm-gap between micro-pillars. The smallest CAH on the hierarchical micro-tip array was measured to be 5.0 0.3 for the center-to-center distance between micro-tips of 30 mm.

One of the interesting strategies for developingthe artificial blood vessels is to generate multi-layeredscaffolds for mimicking the structure of native blood vesselssuch as the intima, media, and adventitia. In this study, weprepared dual-layered poly(L-lactide-co-ε-caprolactone)(PLCL) scaffolds with micro- and nanofibers as a basicconstruct of the vessel using electrospinning methods,which was functionalized using a gelatin through acrylicacid (AAc) grafting by γ-ray irradiation. Based on themicrofibrous platform (fiber diameter 5 μm), the thicknessof the nanofibrous layer (fiber diameter 700 nm) wascontrolled from 1.1 ± 0.8 to 32.2 ± 1.7 μm, and the mechanicalproperty of the scaffolds was almost maintaineddespite the increase in thickness of the nanofibrous layer. The successful AAc graft by γ-ray irradiation could allowthe gelatin immobilization on the scaffolds. The proliferationof smooth muscle cells (SMC) on the scaffolds toward amicrofibrous layer was approximately 1.3-times greater thanin the other groups, and the infiltration was significantlyincreased, presenting a wide cell distribution in the crosssection. In addition, human umbilical vein endothelial cell(HUVEC) adhesion toward nanofibrous layer was wellmanagedover the entire surface, and the acceleratedproliferation was observed on the gelatin-functionalizedscaffolds presenting the well-organized gap-junctions. Therefore, our biomimetic dual-layered scaffolds may bethe alternative tools for replacing the damaged blood vessels.

Ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest rarely occur after local application of epinephrine. Local and superficial application of epinephrine is a common hemostatic method during bronchoscopy, especially after biopsies. Although high plasma levels following endobronchial application of epinephrine have been observed in previous animal studies, there is no report of ventricular fibrillation after a usual dose of endobronchial application of epinephrine during bronchoscopy. We present a case of endobronchial epinephrine-induced ventricular fibrillation and cardiac arrest in a 31-year-old man with no previous history of cardiac disease.
만성 정신분열증 환자에서 항정신병 약물의 병용제로서 투여한 Glycine의 임상적 효과에 관한 연구

Objects : This study was undertaken to know whether there is any clinical efficacy of glycine as adjuvant to antipsychotics in chronic schizophrenics. Methods : Twenty two chronic schizophrenic patients, to whom the same antipsychotics as usual were administered, were randomly assigned to two groups : to the experimental group, glycine was and to the controlled group, placebo was administered adjuntively for 12 weeks in double blind design. We assessed psychopathology by BPRS and measured plasma concentration of glycine, serine, taurine, by HPLC every 4 weeks. Results : 1) The experimental group showed no significant psychopathological improvement, comparing with the controlled group(Table 2-a). 2) The concentration of glycine in the experimental group was significantly increased than the controlled group(Table 3-a). 3) Specific side effects of glycine were not found. Conclusions : Based on these results, glycine adjuvant therapy to chronic schizophrenics is thought to be little effect on improvement of schizophrenic symtoms.
