Bombycoidea comprises 10 families and 4723 species, and the phylogenetic relationships among families are still in debate. In this study, we have determined the complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Brahmaea porphyria. The 15,429-bp mitogenome contains a common set of 37 mitochondrial genes including 13 proteincoding genes, 22 transfer RNA genes (tRNAs), two ribosomal RNA genes (rRNAs) and an inferred control region, and shares the conserved gene rearrangement (trnM-trnI-trnQ) in most ditrysian mitogenomes. Moreover, we analysed the secondary structure for all the tRNA genes of B. porphyria and the preference of codon usage in the PCGs of B. porphyria. The putative 373-bp control region (CR) possesses three types of conserved elements, including ATAGA, Ploy-T stretch, and microsatellite-like elements. A phylogenetic analysis among available Bombycoidea mitogenomes using the concatenated 37 mitochondrial genes appears to support the hypothesis of (Sphingidae+Bombycidae)+Saturniidae and the relatively basal phylogenetic position of Brahmaeidae within Bombycoidea.

Streptomyces sp. 139 generates a novel exopolysaccharide (EPS) designated as Ebosin, which exerts an antagonistic effect on IL-1R in vitro and anti-rheumatic arthritis activity in vivo. A ste gene cluster for Ebosin biosynthesis consisting of 27 ORFs was previously identified in our laboratory. In this paper, ste16 was expressed in Escherichia coli BL21 and the recombinant protein was purified, which has the ability to catalyze the transfer of the methyl group from S-adenosylmethionine (AdoMet) to dTDP-4-keto-6-deoxy-D-glucos, which was thus identified as a methyltransferase. In order to determine the function of ste16 in Ebosin biosynthesis, the gene was disrupted with a double crossover via homologous recombination. The monosaccharide composition of EPS-m generated by the mutant strain Streptomyces sp. 139 (ste16-) was found to differ from that of Ebosin. The IL-1R antagonist activity of EPS-m was markedly lower than that of Ebosin. These experimental results have shown that the ste16 gene codes for a methyltransferase which is involved in Ebosin biosynthesis.

<P>A facultatively alkaliphilic actinomycete strain, designated EGI 80088T, was isolated from a saline-alkali soil sample from Xinjiang province, north-west China, and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic characterization. Strain EGI 80088T formed fragmented aerial hyphae and short spore chains, and rod-like spores aggregated at maturity. Whole-cell hydrolysates of the isolate contained <SMALL>ll</SMALL>-diaminopimelic acid as the diagnostic diamino acid, and glucosamine, mannose, galactose, glucose and rhamnose as the marker sugars. The major fatty acids identified (>5 %) were anteiso-C15 : 0, iso-C15 : 0, summed feature 4 (iso-C17 : 1I/anteiso-C17 : 1B), iso-C16 : 0 and anteiso-C17 : 0. The predominant menaquinone was MK-9(H4). The G+C content of the genomic DNA of strain EGI 80088T was 70.6 mol%. EGI 80088T showed the highest 16S rRNA gene sequence similarity to its closest phylogenetic neighbour <I>Haloactinopolyspora alba</I> YIM 93246T (98.5 %). The DNA–DNA relatedness value of the strain EGI 80088T and <I>H. alba</I> YIM 93246T was 59.3±5.2 %. On the basis of morphological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic characteristics and DNA–DNA hybridization data, strain EGI 80088T represents a novel species of the genus <I>Haloactinopolyspora</I>, for which the name <I>Haloactinopolyspora alkaliphila</I> sp. nov. (type strain EGI 80088T = BCRC 16946T = JCM 19128T) is proposed. The description of the genus <I>Haloactinopolyspora</I> has also been emended.</P>

<P>The surface wettability control of solid materials has been considered as an essential aspect of surface chemistry. In the past decade, superhydrophobic surfaces have revealed a cornucopia of novel structural and functional properties, exhibiting considerable importance in both fundamental research and practical applications. In this review, we summarize the recent developments of superhydrophobic surfaces with unique structural and functional properties. Both the fabricative methods and the working performance of superhydrophobic surfaces with multidisciplinary functionalities including self-cleaning, icephobicity, anti-corrosion, drag reduction, transparency, anti-reflection, structural color, droplet transportation, anisotropy, oil–water separation, water supporting force, superamphiphobicity and responsive switching, have been discussed briefly. Finally, the current challenges and future prospects of this dynamic field are discussed based on our own opinion.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>This review highlights the recent developments in superhydrophobic surfaces with unique structure-defined functionalities towards a wide range of applications. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c2sm26517f'> </P>

Reports of influenza A virus infections in dogs has received considerable attention from veterinarians, virologists, and epidemiologists. Interaction between influenza viral hemagglutinin and cell oligosaccharides containing sialic acid residues results in infection. Sialic acids have an α-2,3-linkage to the penultimate galactose in the avian influenza virus receptor and an α-2,6-linkage in the human receptor. To date, there are no detailed data on the tissue distribution or histological features of either type of sialic acid-linked influenza virus receptors in beagle dogs, which are common laboratory animals and pets. We conducted the current study to visualize the in situ tissue distribution of both sialic acid-linked influenza virus receptors in various organs of beagle dogs using Maackia amurensis lectin II and Sambucus nigra agglutinin. Both α-2,3- and α-2,6-sialic acid-linked receptors were detected in the endothelial cells of the respiratory tract and other organs. Endothelial cells of most gastrointestinal organs were negative for α-2,3-sialic acid-linked receptors in the dogs. Our results suggested that these canine organs may be affected by influenza virus infection. The findings from our study will also help evaluate the occurrence and development of influenza virus infections in dogs.

To investigate their response to changes in substrate temperatures, the roots from six species of cucurbit plants were exposed to 14℃, 24℃, or 34℃, while their aerial portions were maintained at natural ambient temperatures (23℃ to 33℃). These species could be classified into three groups based on their stress response: Group A, Cucurbita ficifolia and C. maxima, heatsensitive but cold-tolerant; Group B, Cucumis sativus and C. melo, heat- and cold-sensitive; and Group C, Luffa cylindrica and Benincasa hispida, heat-tolerant but cold-sensitive. The highest growth rates and lowest contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) for plants in Groups A, B, and C were achieved at temperatures of 14℃, 24℃, and 24℃ to 34℃, respectively. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity was lowest in the roots exposed to optimal growth temperatures while activities of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX), and guaiacol peroxidase (G-POD) operated coordinately in a complicated manner to prevent the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the root cells. Moreover, all plants, regardless of species, responded to unfavorable temperatures by increasing their synthesis of ascorbate and glutathione as well as by reducing the redox ratio of those two important antioxidants.

A neutral polysaccharide, GP, was isolated from a fermentation broth of Ganoderma lucidum. Acid hydrolysis and a paper chromatography analysis indicated that the polysacchride was composed of glucose, xylose, and mannose. The molecular weight was estimated to be 2.9×10(4). The oral administration of GP to mice showed that it can inhibit liver damage induced by GalN and CCl4.
