Hair-Loss Preventing Effect of Grateloupia elliptica

This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of Grateloupia elliptica, a seaweed native to Jeju Island, Korea, on the prevention of hair loss. When immortalized rat vibrissa dermal papilla cells were treated with extract of G. elliptica, the proliferation of dermal papilla cells significantly increased. In addition, the G. elliptica extract significantly inhibited the activity of 5α-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a main cause of androgenetic alopecia. On the other hand, the G. elliptica extract promoted PGE2 production in HaCaT cells in a dose-dependent manner. The G. elliptica extract exhibited particularly high inhibitory effect on LPS-stimulated IL-12, IL-6, and TNF-α production in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulated bone marrow-derived dendritic cells. The G. elliptica extract also showed inhibitory activity against Pityrosporum ovale, a main cause of dandruff. These results suggest that G. elliptica extract has the potential to treat alopecia via the proliferation of dermal papilla, 5α-reductase inhibition, increase of PGE2 production, decrease of LPS-stimulated pro-inflammatory cytokines and inhibitory activity against Pityrosporum ovale.

The purpose of this study was to examine EMG changes of the body according to method the holding during carrying object. The experiments were conducted with utilizing EMG analyses for five male and five female adults as subjects. The results were as followed. 1. The higher muscle action potential of vertical holding was shown than that of right holding when carrying objects in MMH work in proportion to the weight of the object. The came from the subjects using their brachial muscles much to maintain the angles of their wrist joints and elbow joints for keeping their stable postures while walking. 2. The higher muscle action potential of right holding was shown in right and left elector-muscles of their spines(L1-L2, L4-L5) while carrying in all stages of weights except 25kg objects than that of vertical holding. These results were caused from more use of brachial muscles than elector-muscles of spines in carrying weight objects. So vertical holding is more effective in carrying weight objects at a short distance than right holding.

연구목적:모체의 전자간증이 태아에 스트레스를 가하여 태아의 성숙을 촉진시키므로 미숙아의 유병률을 감소시킨다는 종전의 주장에 대하여 근래에는 상반된 결과와 자료들이 예시되고 있다. 특히 전자간증 산모의 태아에서 폐 성숙과 신경학적 발달, 혈액학적 변화 등에 대하여는 많은 논란이 있다. 본 연구는 35주미만의 미숙아들을 대상으로 산모의 전자간증이 출생 후 신생아 예후에 미치는 영향을 비교하여 분석해 보고자 시도하였다. 대상 및 방법:1996년 1월부터 2002년 3월까지 가톨릭대학교 성가병원에서 재태연령 35주미만에 출산한 산모 567명과 그 산모에서 태어난 신생아들의 병록지를 후향적으로 검토하였다. 전자간증 산모는 수축기 혈압 140이상, 확장기 혈압 90이상(6시간 간격으로 2회 이상 측정), 단백뇨가 24시간에 300mg 이상인 경우로 정의하였으며 대조군 산모와 함께 나이, 임신력, 조기양막 파수, 태반출혈(태반조기박리, 전치태반), 분만방법, 스테로이드 사용 등을 기록하였다. 다태아, 알려진 태아기형, 당뇨, 내과적 질병이 있는 경우는 제외되었다. 신생아에서는 출생체중, 재태연령, 1분·5분 Apgar 점수, 자궁내 성장지연, 호흡곤란증후군, 태아곤란증, 혈액 검사소견, 패혈증, 뇌실내 출혈, 신생아 사망, 재원일 수, 인공환기요법 기간 등에 대하여 조사 분석하였다. 결과: 1) 35주 이전 산모의 비교에서 전자간증 산모(n=97)와 대조군 산모(n=470)간 연령, 초산율, 태반출혈, 스테로이드 사용빈도에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 제왕 절개율은 전자간증 산모에서, 조기양막 파수는 대조군 산모에서 높은 비율을 나타내었다. 2) 35주 이전에 태어난 신생아의 비교에서 전자간증 산모의 미숙아는 대조군에 비하여 출생체중이 유의하게 적었으며 자궁내 발육지연과 태아 곤란증의 빈도, 1분 Apgar score 6점 이하의 비율이 유의하게 높았다. 재태 연령, 신생아 사망, 호흡곤란 증후군, 5분 Apgar score 6점 이하, 패혈증, 뇌실내 출혈, 인공환기요법, 입원일 수에 있어서 양군간에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 혈액학적 검사결과에서 혈소판 감소증, 백혈구 감소증, 제대혈의 PH가 양군간에 유의한 차이가 없었다. 3) 32주 이전 산모와 신생아를 대상으로 비교한 결과에서도 24~35주 신생아와 유사한 결론을 얻었다. 특히 호흡곤란 증후군은 32주 이전 전자간증 산모의 미숙아에서 발생률이 더 높았다. 결론: 모체의 전자간증이 미숙 신생아의 출생시 체중에 영향을 주나 임상 경과와 예후에는 영향을 미치지 않는 것으로 보이며 특히 신생아 호흡곤란 증후군의 발생을 저하시키지 않는 것으로 생각된다. Objective : The purpose of this study was to determine neonatal outcomes according to laboratory and clinical features in preeclampsia before 35 weeks gestation. Methods : The medical records of all patients delivered at the hospital from January 1, 1996 through March 31, 2002 were reviewed for the occurrence of preeclampsia before 35 weeks gestation. We compared their maternal medical and obstetric courses and neonatal outcomes with those in a group of non preeclamptic patients who delivered at similar gestational ages. Results : The preeclampsia group had lower mean birth weight, 1-minute Apgar score and umbilical arterial pH. But there were no difference in the incidence of neonatal death, respiratory distress syndrome, grade 3 and 4 intraventricular hemorrhage, and culture-proven sepsis. Results were similar when analysis was limited to infants born before 32 weeks. Conclusion : Maternal preeclampsia does not improve neonatal outcome of infants born before 35 weeks gestation.

Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the composition and biological activities of common and tartary buckwheat during germination, and to compare them. Methods: The effect of the germination time on vitamin C, γ-amino butyric acid (GABA), rutin and quercetin, total polyphenol and flavonoid contents were determined. Results: The vitamin C content reached a maximum on the fifth germination day. As the time of germination increased, the GABA content of the tartary and common buckwheat increased from 2.49 μ g/100 g and 9.59 μg/100 g to 25.17 μg/100 g and 57.84 μg/100 g, respectively. D-chiro-inositol (DCI) is a bioactive compound that serves as a mediator of insulin action. DCI in common and tartary buckwheat was found to be 129.65, 76.31 mg/100 g, respectively, with a significant increase in the DCI content as germination progressed. During germination, the total polyphenol and flavonoid contents tended to increase as germination time increased. The ABTS and DPPH radical scavenging activities in germinated samples increased with germination time and were caused by an increase in their anti-oxidative activities. Moreover, the results showed that the vitamin C and GABA content of the common buckwheat samples were higher than those of the tartary buckwheat samples with the changing trends of total polyphenols and flavonoids opposite to each other. Conclusion: It may be concluded that germinated buckwheat can find a unique use as a natural health product due to the presence of bioactive compounds with health benefits.

Purpose: To determine whether rat eyes develop increases in intraocular pressure (IOP) in response to a topically applied corticosteroid and to investigate the relationship between ocular hypertension and apoptosis of retinal ganglion cells. Methods: IOP was monitored by rebound tonometry in a group of 10 rats that received topically administered dexamethasone in both eyes (experimental) and in another group of 5 rats that received artificial tears (control) three times daily for 4 weeks after the establishment of baseline IOP values. Only eyes that increased by more than 50% compared with the basal IOP were administered once per day for 5 weeks. After 8 weeks, selective immunofluorescence stain for retinal ganglion cells and terminal deoxynucleotidyl transferase dUTP nick end labeling (TUNEL) stain were conducted. Results: Among 20 experimental eyes, 11 eyes (55%) showed a greater than 50% increase in IOP compared with basal IOP. After 8 weeks, the mean IOPs for the experimental and control groups were 11.8 ± 1.4 mm Hg and 18.5 ± 1.0 mm Hg, respectively (<em>p</em> < 0.01). The counts of central retinal ganglion cells (RGCs) were 2718 ± 240 and 2612 ± 443, respectively (<em>p</em> = 0.294). The results of the TUNEL stain also showed no differences. Conclusions: Rat eyes exhibit a steroid-induced ocular hypertensive response with no local complications. However, maintaining ocular hypertension increased by 50% for two months was not enough to detect changes in RGCs. J Korean Ophthalmol Soc 2014;55(8):1202-1207
