        농촌지역 노인들의 인지기능 장애와 사망과의 관련성

        60세이상 노인인구를 대상으로 '농촌지역 노인들의 우울 및 인지기능 장애에 관한 연구'를 한 이정애와 정향균의 연구대상 558명에 대해 농촌지역 노인들의 인지기능 장애와 사망과의 관련성을 살펴본 결과는 다음과 같다. 1) 3년동안 동안 전체 대상자의 사망률은 558명중 57명인 10.2%이었으며 353명의 정상 인지기능군 중 사망자는 30명으로 사망률 8.5%, 126명 의 경도 인지장애군중 사망자는 14명으로 사망률 11.1%, 79명의 중증 인지장애군중 사망자는 13명으로 사망률 16.5% 이었다(표 3). 2) 3년동안 전체 연구 대상자의 생존율은 0.91이었으며 정상, 경도, 중증 인지기능 장애군의 3년 생존율은 각각 0.92, 0.90, 0.86이었다. 로그 순위 검정법으로 인지기능 정상군과 경도 및 중증의 각 인지기능 장애군의 생존곡선을 비교한 결과 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다. 또한 인지기능 정상군과 경도 이상의 인지기능 장애군간 생존곡선을 비교한 결과도 유의한 차이는 없었다. 3) 혼란변인을 보정하지 않는 Cox의 비례위험 회귀 모형의 단변량분석의 결과 95% 신뢰구간(C.I. : Confidence Interval)에서 사망위험도가 유의한 변인은 연령, 월수입, 흡연습관, 신체장애 등이었으며, 인지기능 장애정도를 정상 그리고 경도 및 중증으로 분류한 분석에서는 정상군에 비해 경도 및 중증의 사망위험도가 유의하게 높지 않았으나, 인지기능 점수(MMSEK score)의 증가에 따른 분석 결과 사망위험도가 0.94로 유의하게 낮게 나타났다(표 4). 4) 잠재적 혼란변인들의 영향을 보정한 Cox의 비례위험 회귀모형의 다변량 분석의 결과 인지기능 장애정도 및 MMSEK 점수증가에 따른 사망위험도는 어느 모형에서도 인지기능 장애정도가 사망에 미치는 위험도는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다(표 5). 5) 남녀별로 각각 인지기능 장애와 사망위험도와의 관계를 알아보기 위해 다변량 분석을 시행한 결과 인지기능 장애정도 및 MMSEK 점수 증가에 따른 사망위험도는 어느 모형에서도 인지기능 장애정도가 사망에 미치는 위험도는 통계적으로 유의하지 않았다(표 6, 표 7). 이상 본 연구는 농촌지역 노인들에서 인지기능 장애정도가 사망에 미치는 영향을 알아보고자 하였지만, 인지기능 장애정도가 사망에 미치는 영향을 통계적으로 유의하게 고찰하지 못하였다. The purpose of this study was to examine the mortality risk associated with cognitive impairment among the rural elderly. The subjective of study was 558 of 'A Study on the Depression and Cognitive Impairment in the Rural Elderly' of Jung Ae Rhee and Hyang Gyun Jung's study(1993). Cognitive impairment and other social and health factors were assessed in 558 elderly rural community residents. For this study, a Korean version of the Mini-Mental State Examination(MMSEK) was used as a global indicator of cognitive functioning. And mortality risk factors for each cognitive impairment subgroup were identified by univariate and multivariate Cox regression analysis. At baseline 22.6% of the sample were mildly impaired and 14.2% were severely impaired. As the age increased, the cognitive function was more impaired. Sexual difference was existed in the cognitive function level. Also the variables such as smoking habits, physical disorders had the significant relationship with cognitive function impairment. Across a 3-year observation period the mortality rate was 8.5% for the cognitively unimpaired, 11.1% for the mildly impaired, and 16.5% for the severly impaired respendents. And the survival probability was .92 for the cognitively unimpaired, .90 for the mildly impaired, and .86 for the severly impaired respondents. Compared to survival curve for the cognitively unimpaired group, each survival curve for the mildly and the severely impaired group was not significantly different. When adjustments models were not made for the effects of other health and social covariates, each hazard ratio of death of mildly and severely impaired persons was not significantly different as compared with the cognitively unimpaired. But, as MMSEK score increased, significantly hazard ratio of death decreased. Employing Cox univariate proportional hazards model, statistically other significant variables were age, monthly income, smoking habits, physical disorders. Also when adjustments were made for the effects of other health and social covariates, there was no difference in hazard ratio of death between those with severe or mild impairment and unimpaired persons. And as MMSEK score increased, significantly hazard ratio of death did not decrease. Employing Cox multivariate proportional hazards model, statistically other significant variables were age, monthly income, physical disorders. Employing Cox multivariate proportional hazards model by sex, at men and women statistically significant variable was only age. For both men and women, also cognitive impairment was not a significant risk factor. Other investigators have found that cognitive impairment is a significant predictor of mortality. But we didn't find that it is a significant predictor of mortality. Even though the conclusions of our study were not related to cognitive impairment and mortality, early detection of impaired cognition and attention to associated health problems could improve the quality of life of these older adults and perhaps extend their survival.

        유자첨가사료가 넙치의 질병저항성에 미치는 영향

        넙치사료에 유자과실을 갈아서 0, 2.5, 5, 7.5% 첨가하여 3개월 간 사육한 후 사육효과 및 자체 항병력 증가 효과를 알아보았다. 유자를 첨가한 사료에서 성장의 유의적인 증가는 없었으나 7.5% 첨가 사료로 사육한 넙치는 2.5%∼5% 첨가한 넙치 보다 체중 증가량이 적었다. 혈액학적인 조사 결과에서도 유자첨가로 인하여 넙치의 생리 상태에 부정적인 영향을 보이지는 않았으며 혈중 GOT 및 총콜레스테롤을 감소시키는 효과가 있어 건강도가 증진되는 것으로 나타났다. 혈청의 항세균 활성은 7.5% 시험구에서 높았으나, 라이소자임 활성은 실험구간 차이가 없었다. 어류병원세균의 인위감염에 대한 넙치의 질병저항성은 실험구 간에 차이가 없었으나 2.5% 유자 첨가구의 넙치에서 폐사가 지연되는 효과를 보였다. 그러므로 사료에 유자를 첨가하여 사육하는 것은 넙치의 어류생리학적 식품영양학적인 면에서 부정적인 영향은 없으나 유자첨가량을 2.5 %∼5 % 사이로 하여 사육하는 것이 바람직할 것으로 판단되었다. Effects of various concentration of yuzu Citrus junos Siebold ex Tanaka in the diets on growth, blood chemistry and disease resistance of olive flounder were determined. Fifteen hundred fish averaging 200∼270g were fed on moist pellet containing yuzu at the concentrations of 0%(control), 2.5%, 5% and 7.5% for 3 months. After feeding trial, weight gain of fish fed 2.5% and 5.0% yuza diet was higher than those of fish fed 0% and 7.5% yuza diet but not significant(P>0.05). No differences in hematological and physiological indices of olive flounder were found among the experimental diets except for total cholesterol. Serum lysozyme activity was not significantly different among fish fed experimental diets but bactericidal activity of fish fed 7.5% yuza diet was significantly different from those of fish fed 0, 2.5 and 5% Yuza diets. Survival rates of fish fed 2.5% yuza diet at experimental infection with Edwardsiella tarda and Streptococcus sp. were higher than those of the other experimental groups but not significant. In conclusion, Dietary inclusion of 2.5∼5% yuzu seems to have positive effects for fish health condition and disease resistance.

        Discordance between Physician and the General Public Perceptions of Prognostic Disclosure to Children with Serious Illness: a Korean Nationwide Study

        <P><B>Background</B></P><P>It is difficult to decide whether to inform the child of the incurable illness. We investigated attitudes of the general population and physicians toward prognosis disclosure to children and associated factors in Korea.</P><P><B>Methods</B></P><P>Physicians working in one of 13 university hospitals or the National Cancer Center and members of the general public responded to the questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of the age appropriate for informing children about the prognosis and the reason why children should not be informed. This survey was conducted as part of research to identify perceptions of physicians and general public on the end-of-life care in Korea.</P><P><B>Results</B></P><P>A total of 928 physicians and 1,241 members of the general public in Korea completed the questionnaire. Whereas 92.7% of physicians said that children should be informed of their incurable illness, only 50.7% of the general population agreed. Physicians were also more likely to think that younger children should know about their poor prognosis compared with the general population. Physicians who opposed incurable illness disclosure suggested that children might not understand the situation, whereas the general public was primarily concerned that disclosure would exacerbate the disease. Physicians who were women or religious were more likely to want to inform children of their poor prognosis. In the general population, gender, education, comorbidity, and caregiver experience were related to attitude toward poor prognosis disclosure to children.</P><P><B>Conclusion</B></P><P>Our findings indicate that physicians and the general public in Korea differ in their perceptions about informing children of poor prognosis.</P>

        Screening of Korean Medicinal Herbs for Hormonal Activities using Recombinant Yeast Assay and MCF-7 Human Breast Cancer Cells

        약용식물내 에스트로겐성과 항-에스트로겐성을 조사하고 항암인자를 발견하기 위하여, 본연구는 에탄올추출로 제조된 9종류의 한국산 약용식물에 대하여 재조합효모와 MCF-7 사람유방암세포주를 이용하여 스크리닝하고 비교하였다. 재조합효모를 이용한 실험결과, 7종류의 약용식물에서 에스트로겐성이 나타났고, 4종류에서 안드로겐성이 나타났다. 또한 MCF-7 사람유방암세포주를 이용한 실험결과, 8종류의 추출물이 MCF-7 세포의 성장을 억제하는 것으로 확인되었으며 비스페놀 A와 동시 처치한 경우에도 유의적으로 억제하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 Clyeyrrhiza uralensis, Cassia tora, Syringa velutina, Zingiber officinale, Malva verticillata, Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer는 식물성 에스트로겐으로서 에스트로겐에 양성인 사람유방암세포의 증식을 유의적으로 억제시티는 흥미로운 결과가 제시되었다. 따라서 이번 연구는 한국산 약용식물이 식물성 에스트로겐과 항암인자로서 이용될 수 있으며, 에스트로겐의 활성을 조사하는데 유용하게 이용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. To investigate whether there are estrogenic and anti-estrogenic activities in various medicinal herbs and discover prominent chemo-preventive agents, eye screened and compared the ethanol extracts of 9 plants through the recombinant yeast assay and MCF-7 human breast cancer cell assay. In recombinant yeast assay. seven medicinal herbs showed estrogenicity, and tour extracts showed androgenecity. In MCF-7 proliferation assay. the growth of MCF-7 cells was inhibited by eight extracts before and even alter co-treatment with bisphenol A. It is interesting that the extracts of Glyeyrrhiza uralensis, Cassia tora, Syringa velutina, Zingiber officinale, Malva verticillata, and Ponax ginseng C.A. Meyer exhibited inhibitory effects as phytoestrogens in estrogen-responsive human breast cancer cells. This study suggests that some Korean medicinal herbs might be considered as phytoestrooens and be useful to further analyze those plants which contain the estrogenic effect in order to identify the active principles.

      • Ruthenium-Based Electrocatalysts Supported on Reduced Graphene Oxide for Lithium-Air Batteries

        <P>Ruthenium-based nanomaterials supported on reduced graphene oxide (rGO) have been investigated as air cathodes in non-aqueous electrolyte Li-air cells using a TEGDME-LiCF<SUB>3</SUB>SO<SUB>3</SUB> electrolyte. Homogeneously distributed metallic ruthenium and hydrated ruthenium oxide (RuO<SUB>2</SUB>·0.64H<SUB>2</SUB>O), deposited exclusively on rGO, have been synthesized with average size below 2.5 nm. The synthesized hybrid materials of Ru-based nanoparticles supported on rGO efficiently functioned as electrocatalysts for Li<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>2</SUB> oxidation reactions, maintaining cycling stability for 30 cycles without sign of TEGDME-LiCF<SUB>3</SUB>SO<SUB>3</SUB> electrolyte decomposition. Specifically, RuO<SUB>2</SUB>·0.64H<SUB>2</SUB>O-rGO hybrids were superior to Ru-rGO hybrids in catalyzing the OER reaction, significantly reducing the average charge potential to ∼3.7 V at the high current density of 500 mA g<SUP>–1</SUP> and high specific capacity of 5000 mAh g<SUP>–1</SUP>.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2013/ancac3.2013.7.issue-4/nn400477d/production/images/medium/nn-2013-00477d_0007.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn400477d'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

        적외선등을 이용한 실외 실험적 온난화 처리가 소나무 묘목의 생장과 생리적 특성에 미치는 영향

        Climate change will affect the physiological traits and growth of forest trees. This study was conducted to investigate the effects of an experimental warming on growth and physiological characteristics of Pinus densiflora S. et Z. seedlings. One-year-old P. densiflora seedlings were planted in control and warmed plots in April 2010. The air temperature of warmed plots was increased by 3oC using infrared lamps from November 2010. We measured shoot height, root collar diameter, above and below ground biomass, chlorophyll contents and leaf nitrogen concentration from March 2011 to March 2013. Seedling height and root collar diameter showed no significant difference between warmed and control plots except for root collar diameter measured in June 2012. Seedling leaf biomass was lower in the warmed (23.94±2.10 g) than in the control (26.08±1.72 g) plots in 2013. Shoot to root ratio (S/R ratio) was lower in the warmed (1.09±0.07) than in the control (1.31±0.10) plots in 2013. Leaf nitrogen concentrations and chlorophyll contents were not significantly different between warmed and control plots except for leaf nitrogen concentration in 2011. Leaf C/N ratio was increased in 2012 under the warming treatment. Low growth and S/R ratio in warmed plots might be related to the higher temperature and water stress. In the future, the below-ground carbon allocation of P. densiflora might be increased by global warming due to temperature and water stress.
