The purpose of this study was to examine the physico-chemical and sensory characteristics of Kakdugi made with mashed red pepper. With regard to the pH of the Kakdugi. those of the juice from Kakdugi with red pepper powder and of the liquid with mashed red pepper were the highest and lowest immediately after preparation. respectively, but thereafter both slightly decreased, but were similar after the fifth week. Generally. the total acidity of Kakdugi liquid was the higher than that of Kakdtegi juice. With regard to the L value, that of the Kakdugi juice was higher than that of Kakdugi liquid and that of Kakdugi with mashed red pepper washigher than that of Kakdugiuitlr red pepper powder. From the third week, the values of all samples generally decreased. The 'a' value of the Kakdugi liquid with mashed red pepper during fermentation was highest During early fermentation, the juice of Kukdugi with red pepper powder showed a higher value than that of Kakdugi with mashed red pepper, but conversely, from the second week that of Kakdugr with mashed red pepper was higher than that of Kakdugi with red pepper powder. The 'L' value of the juice from Kakdugi with red pepper powder was highest until the second week, but trout the third week that of Kalotugi with trashed red pepper was highest. With respect to the organic acids contents, those of citric, quinic and malic acids decreased, but those of lactic and acetic acids increased during tcrrnentatton progression. In addition, the citric, lacticand malic acids contents of the Kakdugi with mashed red pepper werethe highest, whereas that of quinic acid of the Kakdugi with red pepper powder was the highest. From the forth week, the acetic acid content of the Kakdugi with mashed red pepper was further increased. As a result of the sensory test. Kakdugi with mashed red pepper showed significantly higher values with regard to redness and fresh flavor, hut in overall acceptability in the QDA, appearance and taste in the acceptance test. 'Therefore, our results indicate that mashed red pepper particularly increased the 'a' value and organic acid contents of Kakdugi compared to those of red pepper powder, leading to an increased overall acceptability.

본 연구에서는 지하수 모델을 이용하여 낙동강 하구둑 개방에 따른 주변 지역의 염분 침투 평가를 모사하였다. 지하수 모델링에는 농업용 지하수공 5공, 국가지하수관측망 1공, 보조지하수관측망 34공을 자료를 이용하였으며, 낙동강 하구둑 개방 이후의 지하수위, 염분 농도를 모니터링하기 위해 신규로 굴착한 21개 지하수공 자료도 이용하였다. 또한 지하수 모델링에는 3차례에 걸친 해수 유입 실증실험 결과를 바탕으로 모사된 낙동강 하천수 모델링 결과를 반영하였다. 하천수 모델링 자료는 한국해양과학기술원에서 수행한 Dlft-3D 자료이다. 지하수 모델링은 밀도류 모델인 FEFLOW를 이용하였다. 모델 영역은 낙동강 하구둑의 전면개방을 모사를 위해 하굿둑으로부터 상류의 함안보까지로 설정하였으며, 분수령을 기준으로 하여 삼각형 격자로 구축하였다. 수리지질학적 자료 입력을 위해서는 지하수 기초조사 보고서, 지하수 관리계획 등 지질 및 수리지질 관련 보고서를 참고하였다. 정상류 모델링 결과, 낙동강 본류 좌안의 지하수위가 우안보다 대체로 높게 나타났으며, 지하수는 대체로 낙동강 방향으로 흐른다. 염분 확산 모델링은 최악의 상황을 가정하여 모사하였으며, 하천의 최고 수위 조건을 적용하였으며 낙동강 본류를 제외한 육지의 염분 농도는 0으로 설정하였다. 염분 확산은 주변 내륙지역으로 최대 686 m까지 침투하며, 염분 농도는 0.2 ~ 0.3 psu로서 농작물 생산량을 저하시키는 염분 농도 기준(0.6 psu)보다 낮은 것으로 산정되었다. 본 연구에서는 광역적인 지하수 모델링을 수행하였으나, 관련 자료의 부족(시추 자료 부족, 과거 데이터의 신뢰성의 한계, 하천의 조사 자료 미흡 등)으로 인해 모델링의 불확실성이 존재한다. 따라서 추가적인 지하수공 시추자료, 지하수위 및 수질 장기 모니터링 자료 등을 통한 추가적인 연구가 필요하다.
Accumulation of the parkin substrate, FAF1, plays a key role in the dopaminergic neurodegeneration

<P>This study reports the physical and functional interplay between Fas-associated factor 1 (FAF1), a death-promoting protein, and parkin, a key susceptibility protein for Parkinson's disease (PD). We found that parkin acts as an E3 ubiquitin ligase to ubiquitinate FAF1 both <I>in vitro</I> and at cellular level, identifying FAF1 as a direct substrate of parkin. The loss of parkin function due to PD-linked mutations was found to disrupt the ubiquitination and degradation of FAF1, resulting in elevated FAF1 expression in SH-SY5Y cells. Moreover, FAF1-mediated cell death was abolished by wild-type parkin, but not by PD-linked parkin mutants, implying that parkin antagonizes the death potential of FAF1. This led us to investigate whether FAF1 participates in the pathogenesis of PD. To address this, we used a gene trap mutagenesis approach to generate mutant mice with diminished levels of FAF1 (<I>Faf1</I><SUP>gt/gt</SUP>). Using the 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1,2,3,6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP)-treated mouse model of PD, we found that FAF1 accumulated in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) of MPTP-treated PD mice, and that MPTP-induced dopaminergic cell loss in the SNc was significantly attenuated in <I>Faf1</I><SUP>gt/gt</SUP> mice versus <I>Faf1</I><SUP>+/+</SUP> mice. MPTP-induced reduction of locomotor activity was also lessened in <I>Faf1</I><SUP>gt/gt</SUP> mice versus <I>Faf1</I><SUP>+/+</SUP> mice. Furthermore, we found that FAF1 deficiency blocked PD-linked biochemical events, including caspase activation, ROS generation, JNK activation and cell death. Taken together, these results suggest a new role for FAF1: that of a positive modulator for PD.</P>
Synthesis and characterization of 9,10-diphenylanthracene-based blue light emitting materials

<P>A new series of conjugated polymers having diphenylanthracene vinylene biphenylene and diphenylanthracene vinylene terphenylene in the main chain and fluorene pendant group, were synthesized by nickel catalized Yamamoto coupling and palladium catalized Suzuki coupling. The obtained polymers showed good solubility in the common organic solvent and number average molecular weights of 14,000–9500 with a polydispersity indexes ranging from 1.7 to 2.1. Both polymers possess excellent thermal stability with glass transition temperatures of 123–127 °C and the onset decomposition temperatures of 420–400 °C. The obtained polymers showed blue emission (λ<SUB>max</SUB> = 461 for PFPA and λ<SUB>max</SUB> = 455 nm for PFPAME) in PL spectra, specially, PFPAME containing diphenylanthracene vinylene terphenylenevinylene showed the consistent emission in the solution and film. The double-layered device with an ITO/PEDOT/PFPAME/LiF/Al structure has a turn-on voltage of about 5.8 V, maximum brightness of 152 cd/m<SUP>2</SUP> and an electroluminescent efficiency of 0.143 lm/W, and stable blue EL emission that is not altered by increased voltage. © 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Cervical cancer in Peutz-Jeghers syndrome (PJS): Case report

PJS is a rare autosomal dominant genetic disorder, characterized by gastrointestinal(GI) hamartomas and mucocutaneous pigmentation and increased risk of various malignancies, with highest incidence in colorectum for GI and uterine cervix for extra-GI tumors. We report 2 cases of cervical cancer in women with established or highly suspected PJS. A 51-year old, para 2, surgically menopaused woman visited Emergency Department with abdominal pain, fever and vaginal discharge. She\'s had a repeated history of ovarian mucinous cystadenoma. She's been diagnosed with PJS based on endoscopy at 45 years but has been lost to follow up. Pelvic exam and latest Pap results were insignificant. On ultrasound and abdomen CT, fluid collection within the endometrium was noted with negative cytology. She underwent total hysterectomy and pathology resulted in cervical mucinous adenocarcinoma. After further work up she was staged as IVB. She is currently receiving chemotherapy with paclitaxel/ cisplatin/bevacizumab. A 38 year-old virgin patient was referred to our clinic with vaginal spotting for three months. Melanotic pigmentation on lips was visible. Pelvic exam showed a mass covering up the entire cervix which resulted in mucinous adenocarcinoma. Pelvis MRI showed cervical mass invasion of upper vagina and left parametrium and endoscopy showed numerous polyps of stomach and colon which were confirmed as adenoma and hyperplastic polyps. She received CCRT with paclitaxel/cisplatin which was partially effective and received second line chemotherapy with paclitaxel/carboplatin but was ineffective. Third line included cisplatin/topotecan but after one cycle she expired due to AKI and sepsis. Most cervical cancers in PJS are well-differentiated mucinous adenocarcinomas, typically detected at advanced stage with aggressive clinical behavior. Therefore early screening and continuous surveillance in PJS would be important for early detection of other malignancies and optimization of management
