        Current Status and Associated Factors of Post-Hemorrhagic Hydrocephalus in Infants of 22 to 28 Weeks Gestation With Severe Intraventricular Hemorrhage in Korea: A Nationwide Cohort Study

        Background: Post-hemorrhagic hydrocephalus (PHH), a common complication of severe intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) in very low birth weight (BW) infants, is associated with significant morbidity and poor neurological outcomes. The objective of this study was to assess the current status of PHH and analyze the risk factors associated with the necessity of treatment for PHH in infants born between 22 and 28 weeks of gestation, specifically those with severe IVH (grade 3 or 4). Methods: The analysis was conducted on 1,097 infants who were born between 22–28 gestational weeks and diagnosed with severe IVH, using data from the Korean Neonatal Network. We observed that the prevalence of PHH requiring treatment was 46.3% in infants with severe IVH. Results: Higher rates of mortality, transfer during admission, cerebral palsy, and ventriculoperitoneal shunt after discharge were higher in infants with PHH than in those without PHH. PHH in severe IVH was associated with a higher rate of pulmonary hemorrhage, seizures, and IVH grade 4 in the entire cohort. In addition, it was associated with a lower rate of small for gestational age and chorioamnionitis. In the subgroup analysis, high BW, outborn status, pulmonary hemorrhage, seizure, sepsis, and IVH grade 4 were associated with a higher incidence of PHH between 22 and 25 gestational weeks (GW). In infants born between 26 and 28 GW, a higher incidence of PHH was associated with seizures and IVH grade 4. Conclusion: It is necessary to maintain meticulous monitoring and neurological intervention for infants with PHH not only during admission but also after discharge. In addition, identifying the clinical factors that increase the likelihood of developing PHH from severe IVH is crucial.

        Newborn Hearing Screening Test: A Comparison between Infants in Neonatal Intensive Care Unit versus Nursery

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to compare the clinical characteristics of newborn hearing test results between infants in well-baby nursery (WBN) versus neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) and to determine the optimal strategies of hearing screening for each group. Methods: A total of 2,161 newborns admitted to WBN and NICU were enrolled in this retrospective cohort study. Automated audio brainstem response was used for hearing screening test. The screening rates, referral rates, prevalence rates, false positive rates and predictive positive value (PPV) were analyzed for infants in WBN and NICU. Results: The referral rates of the screening test were 2.2% and 5.0% in WBN and NICU groups (P<0.01); the prevalence rate of congenital hearing loss (HL) were 0.5% and 4.6% in the WBN and NICU groups (P<0.01). The false positive rates and PPV of screening test were 0.9% and 36.8% in WBN; 0.8% and 80% in NICU. Infants with bilateral refer results in both WBN and NICU were at the higher risk of congenital HL, compared with infants with unilateral refer results in WBN who were mostly confirmed to have false positive. Conclusion: The infants in WBN showed high unilateral referral rate with low prevalence rate of HL. However, the infants with bilateral refer results in WBN and uni- or bi-lateral refer results in NICU had higher prevalence rate of HL, compared with those with unilateral refer results in WBN. Different strategies for hearing screening might be considered in infants in WBN and NICU.

        Mortality and Morbidities according to Time of Birth in Extremely Low Birth Weight Infants

        Background: Although the overall quality of high-risk neonatal care has improved recently, there is still concern about a difference in the quality of care when comparing off-hour births and regular-hour births. Moreover, there are no data in Korea regarding the impact of time of birth on mortality and morbidities in preterm infants. Methods: A total of 3,220 infants weighing < 1,000 g and born at 23–34 weeks in 2013–2017 were analyzed based on the Korean Neonatal Network data. Mortality and major morbidities were analyzed using logistic regression according to time of birth during off-hours (nighttime, weekend, and holiday) and regular hours. The institutes were sub-grouped into hospital group I and hospital group II based on the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) care level defined by the mortality rates of < 50% and ≥ 50%, respectively, in infants born at 23–24 weeks' gestation. Results: The number of births during regular hours and off-hours was similar. In the total population and hospital group I, off-hour births were not associated with increased neonatal mortality and morbidities. However, in hospital group II, increased early mortality was found in the off-hour births when compared to regular-hour births. Conclusion: Efforts to improve the overall quality of NICU are required to lower the early mortality rate in off-hour births. Also, other sensitive indexes for the evaluation of quality of NICU care should be further studied.

        Discovery of Orally Available Runt-Related Transcription Factor 3 (RUNX3) Modulators for Anticancer Chemotherapy by Epigenetic Activation and Protein Stabilization.

        <P>Recently, we identified a novel strategy for anticancer chemotherapy by restoring runt-related transcription factor 3 (RUNX3) levels via lactam-based histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors that stabilize RUNX3. Described here are the synthesis, biological evaluation, and pharmacokinetic evaluation of new synthetic small molecules based on pyridone-based HDAC inhibitors that specifically stabilize RUNX3 by acetylation and regulate its function. Many of the newly synthesized compounds showed favorable RUNX activities, HDAC inhibitory activities, and inhibitory activities on the growth of human cancer cell lines. Notably, one of these new derivatives, (E)-N-hydroxy-3-(2-oxo-1-(quinolin-2-ylmethyl)-1,2-dihydropyridin-3-yl)acrylamide (4l), significantly restored RUNX3 in a dose-dependent manner and showed high metabolic stability, a good pharmacokinetic profile with high oral bioavailability and long half-life, and strong antitumor activity. This study suggests that pyridone-based analogues modulate RUNX3 activity through epigenetic regulation as well as strong transcriptional and post-translational regulation of RUNX3 and could be potential clinical candidates as orally available RUNX3 modulators for the treatment of cancer.</P>

        Unexpected Li<sub>2</sub>O<sub>2</sub> Film Growth on Carbon Nanotube Electrodes with CeO<sub>2</sub> Nanoparticles in Li–O<sub>2</sub> Batteries

        <P>In lithium-oxygen (Li-O-2) batteries, it is believed that lithium peroxide (Li2O2) electrochemically forms thin films with thicknesses less than 10 nm resulting in capacity restrictions due to limitations in charge transport. Here we show unexpected Li2O2 film growth with thicknesses of similar to 60 nm on a three-dimensional carbon nanotube (CNT) electrode incorporated with cerium dioxide (ceria) nanoparticles (CeO2 NPs). The CeO2 NPs favor Li2O2 surface nucleation owing to their strong binding toward reactive oxygen species (e.g., O-2 and LiO2). The subsequent film growth results in thicknesses of similar to 40 nm (at cutoff potential of 2.2 V vs Li/Li+), which further increases up to similar to 60 nm with the addition of trace amounts of H2O that enhances the solution free energy. This suggests the involvement of solvated superoxide species (LiO2(sol)) that precipitates on the existing Li2O2 films to form thicker films via disproportionation. By comparing toroidal Li2O2 formed solely from LiO2(sol), the thick Li2O2 films formed from surface-mediated nucleation/thin-film growth following by LiO2(sol) deposition provides the benefits of higher reversibility and rapid surface decomposition during recharge.</P>

      • 온라인 공간상의 동해 지명 표기에 관한 연구

        The East Sea, a body of water between Korea and Japan, is now widely called ‘Sea of Japan’ in foreign countries. The name ‘Sea of Japan’ was given to this body of water to replace its original name ‘East Sea" when Korea lost its sovereignty to Japanese colonial rule. Restoring the original name ‘East Sea’ to the currently known ‘Sea of Japan’ became an international issue when Korea officially announced its historical claim to the area at the UN conference in 1992. Misrepresentation of the name over the water body is found more widespread online which reflect offline information. This study was prompted by the understanding that correct and fair naming of the East Sea online is a matter of supreme urgency. To understand the current online naming situation of the ‘East Sea’, this study reviewed 100 websites of various countries around the world, and the mass media and map makers. In addition, ‘the 20 websites for special supervision’ selected in 2007 by the report of the Northeast Asian History Foundation, who is focused on renaming the Sea of Japan to East Sea, were also closely examined. Then, the websites were categorized according to their use of the name of East Sea or Sea of Japan. The categorizes are: ‘East Sea only / Sea of Japan only’, ‘Double equal name: East Sea / Sea of Japan’, ‘Double equal name: Sea of Japan / East Sea’, ‘Mixed usage’, ‘Blank/no marking)’ and ‘others’. The efforts of the associations or organizations were also categorized into ‘governmental’ ‘academic’, and ‘private’. The results of this study are as follows: First, according to 100 websites, the majority used ‘Sea of Japan only’. The use of ‘mixed usage" was the second majority. Secondly, two of ‘the 20 websites for special supervision’ have recently changed their naming of Sea of Japan to East Sea. For example, Wikipedia changed to ‘blank(no marking)’, and Welt Atlas to ‘Double equal name: East Sea / Sea of Japan’, which means they are aware of the naming issue of East. Sea.

        다양한 환경 제약적인 특성들을 갖는 임베디드 소프트웨어를 공유 가능한 개별 단위의 재사용 자산으로 개발하고, 자산의 재사용을 활성화 시키기 위해서는 명확한 개발 절차, 기법, 도구 및 이들을 이용할 수 있게 하는 교육 등 통합적인 재사용 체계가 필요하다. 이를 위해 ETRI에서는 “임베디드 시스템 개발 프레임워크 구축”의 일환으로 임베디드 소프트웨어 개발 조직내의 체계적인 재사용을 위한 재사용 체계를 개발하였다. 재사용 체계는 문서나 코드의 실질적인 재사용 형태 및 절차를 정의하는 재사용 지침, 재사용 지침의 적용을 도와주는 도구인 재사용 지원 시스템, 그리고 재사용 지침과 재사용 지원 시스템을 조직에 보급하기 위한 방법인 재사용 체계 보급 정책으로 구성된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 재사용 체계의 구성과 내용에 대해 설명한다.

        COVID-19 전·후 한국 청소년의 건강행태, 정신건강 및 영양상태 분석: 국민건강영양조사 2019–2020년 자료를 활용하여

        본 연구는 국민건강영양조사 2019–2020년 자료를 활용하여 한국 남녀 중, 고등학생을 대상으로 coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) 전후의 건강행태, 정신건강 및 영양 상태를 비교하기 위해 수행되었다. 신체계측은 COVID-19 이후 남자 중학생에서 과체중과 비만 비율이 증가하는 경향을 보였으나 유의적인 차이는 아니었다. 건강행태 및 신체, 정신건강을 비교하면 COVID-19 이후 남자 고등학생에서 하루 60분 신체 활동 실천 일수가 줄고 중성지방, 헤모글로빈 수치가 낮아졌다. 남자 중학생은 이완기 혈압과 인슐린농도가 높아지고, 여자 중학생은 공복혈당, 여자 고등학생은 당화혈색소 수치가 낮아졌다. 남녀 중학생에서 COVID-19 이후 스트레스를 조금 느끼거나 거의 없다는 비율이 높았으며 여자 중학생에서는 아침식사 결식률이, 남녀 중, 고등학생 모두에서는 가족과 점심식사를 동반한다는 비율이 높아졌다. COVID-19 이후 남자 중학생은 우유류가, 여자 중학생은 감자류, 야채류, 음료류에서 평균섭취량이 낮으며 전반적으로 영양소 섭취가 부족했음을 알 수 있었다. 영양소 섭취량은 COVID-19 이후 남자 중학생에서 인과 나이아신 섭취량의 감소, 여자 중학생에서 칼륨, 비타민 C 섭취량의 감소, 그리고 여자 고등학생에서는 비타민 C와 리보플라빈의 섭취량이 감소하는 변화를 나타냈다. 위 결과를 통해 COVID-19 팬데믹 상황에서 청소년의 건강상태는 비교적 잘 유지하고 있었으나 신체활동 부족, 식습관 변화, 일부 영양소 섭취 부족이 나타났음을 확인하였다. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the changes in health behavior, mental health, and nutritional status of Korean adolescents before and after the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic outbreak. Methods: A total of 800 adolescents (12~18 years old) who participated in the 2019–2020 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (KNHANES) were included as study subjects and divided into four groups (204 middle school boys, 172 middle school girls, 219 high school boys, and 205 high school girls). The 2019 and 2020 KNHANES data were classified into data collected before and after the COVID-19 outbreak, respectively. Results: After the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak, middle school boys showed an increased tendency toward becoming overweight and obese, with significantly increased levels of diastolic blood pressure and insulin. While there was no major change in the subjective health status among adolescents, the high school boys showed a significantly decreased physical activity after COVID-19 outbreak. Moreover, the proportion of middle school students feeling a little stressed significantly increased after the COVID-19 outbreak. The rate of skipping breakfast significantly increased in middle school girls, but the rate of having lunch with companions significantly increased among all adolescents after the COVID-19 outbreak. However, the intake of milk, vegetables, fruits, seaweeds, and pulses significantly decreased, although the intake of sugars, beverages, and seasonings significantly decreased as well, during this period. These changes may lead to an increased proportion of adolescents with insufficient intake of nutrients, including potassium, vitamin C, and riboflavin. Conclusion: These results highlight the impact of COVID-19 on comprehensive changes in physical and mental health status, lifestyle behavior, and nutritional status in adolescents, suggesting the need for targeted prevention and intervention for physical and mental wellbeing during the pandemic.
