Prevalence and Incidence of Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder in Korea: Population Based Study

        HYELIM LEE,Jae Young Kim,Jin Myoung Seok,Yoon-Ho Hong,Nam Gu Lim,신하영,Byung-Jo Kim,황순영,민주홍,김병준 대한의학회 2020 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.35 No.17

Background: Although neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) is known to be a rare disease, its prevalence and incidence have not yet been studied in Korea. We performed a population-based study to examine the prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in Korea using data from the Korean National Health Insurance (NHI) claims database. Methods: Data from 2013 to 2017 were obtained, with a washout period set as 2013 and 2014. The prevalence and incidence of NMOSD in 2016 and 2017 were calculated using population census data. Subjects were divided into 5 groups at 15-year intervals, depending on the age at which the diagnostic code was entered. The relative risk (RR) for each age group was compared with the oldest (≥ 60 years) age group. Results: The overall prevalence was estimated to be 3.36 and 3.56 per 100,000 individuals, with an incidence of 0.41 and 0.65 per 100,000 individuals-year in 2016 and 2017, respectively. The mean age was 43.08 (standard deviation, 14.56) years, and the ratio of male to females was 1:4.7. The incidence was higher in female individuals aged between 30 and 59 years (RR, 2.8–3.05; P < 0.05). Conclusion: Nationwide prevalence of NMOSD in Korea was 3.36 and 3.56/100,000 and its incidence was 0.41 and 0.65/100,000-year in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Colloidal Assembly in Leidenfrost Drops for Noniridescent Structural Color Pigments

        Lim, Che Ho,Kang, Hyelim,Kim, Shin-Hyun American Chemical Society 2014 Langmuir Vol.30 No.28

Noniridescent structural color pigments have great potential as alternatives to conventional chemical color pigments in many coloration applications due to their nonbleaching and color-tunable properties. In this work, we report a novel method to create photonic microgranules composed of glassy packing of silica particles and small fraction of carbon black nanoparticles, which show pronounced structural colors with low angle-dependency. To prepare isotropic random packing in each microgranule, a Leidenfrost drop, which is a drop levitated by its own vapor on a hot surface, is employed as a template for fast consolidation of silica particles. The drop randomly migrates over the hot surface and rapidly shrinks, while maintaining its spherical shape, thereby consolidating silica particles to granular structures. Carbon black nanoparticles incorporated in the microgranules suppress incoherent multiple scattering, thereby providing improved color contrast. Therefore, photonic microgranules in a full visible range can be prepared by adjusting the size of silica particles with insignificant whitening.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info

Characterization of embroidered textile-based electrode for EMG smart wear according to stitch technique

        Hyelim Kim,Soohyeon Rho,Daeyoung Lim,Wonyoung Jeong 한국의류학회 2023 Fashion and Textiles Vol.10 No.1

This study fabricated and evaluated the textile-type electrodes for application to smartwear that can measure surface electromyography(sEMG). It was manufactured by lock stitch(LS) and moss stitch(MS), and the stitch distance was prepared as 1, 2, or 3 mm. The surface and compression property was measured by using the Kawabata evaluation system, and the sheet resistance and skin-electrode impedance were analyzed. The coefficient of friction(MIU) of the MS was larger than that of the LS. On the other hand, the geometrical roughness(SMD) showed a smaller value. When the same load was applied, the compressive range of the MS was larger than the LS. When it was manufactured as a leg sleeve and worn, the conductive path could be increased as the loops made of conductive yarn become flat as the loops adhere to the skin by the pressure of clothing. Accordingly, the skin-electrode impedance decreased by increasing the area in contact with the skin. As the results of the RMS(root-mean-square), the LS was higher than the MS in a stable. Nevertheless, the SNR(signal-to-noise ratio) value was lower than that of the MS because movement generated noise during operation. Therefore, more stable signal acquisition is possible when applying MS. It is expected that could be applied to producing smartwear for sEMG measurements with superior sEMG signal acquisition performance while having a softer touch and flexibility.

Increased phosphorylation of Ca(2+) handling proteins as a proarrhythmic mechanism in myocarditis.

        Park, Hyelim,Park, Hyewon,Lee, Dajeong,Oh, Sujung,Lim, Jisoo,Hwang, Hye Jin,Park, Sungha,Pak, Hui-Nam,Lee, Moon-Hyoung,Joung, Boyoung Japanese Circulation Society 2014 CIRCULATION JOURNAL Vol.78 No.9

Because fatal arrhythmia is an important cause of death in patients with myocarditis, we investigated the proarrhythmic mechanisms of experimental autoimmune myocarditis. METHODS???AND???RESULTS: Myocarditis was induced by injection of 2 mg porcine cardiac myosin into the footpads of adult Lewis rats on days 1 and 8 (Myo, n=15) and the results compared with Control rats (Control, n=15). In an additional 15 rats, 6 mg/kg prednisolone was injected into the gluteus muscle before the injection of porcine cardiac myosin on days 1 and 8 (MyoS, n=15). Hearts with myocarditis had longer action potential duration (APD), slower conduction velocity (CV; P<0.01 vs. Control), higher CV heterogeneity, greater fibrosis, higher levels of immunoblotting of high-mobility group protein B1, interleukin 6 and tumor necrosis factor-관 proteins. Steroid treatment partially reversed the translations for myocarditis, CV heterogeneity, reduced APD at 90% recovery to baseline, increased CV (P<0.01), and reversed fibrosis (P<0.05). Programmed stimulation triggered sustained ventricular tachycardia in Myo rats (n=4/5), but not in controls (n=0/5) or Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII) inhibitor (KN93) treated Myo rats (n=0/5, P=0.01). CaMKII autophosphorylation at Thr287 (201%), and RyR2 phosphorylation at Ser2808 (protein kinase A/CaMKII site, 126%) and Ser2814 (CaMKII site, 21%) were increased in rats with myocarditis and reversed by steroid.

High Level of Real Urban Air Pollution Promotes Cardiac Arrhythmia in Healthy Mice

        Hyewon Park,Sangchul Lim,Seunghoon Lee,문다솜,강지영,김효은,Hyelim Park,Changsoo Kim,Sunho Park,Yeong-Min Lim,Boyoung Joung 대한심장학회 2021 Korean Circulation Journal Vol.51 No.2

Background and Objectives: Ambient particulate matter (PM) in real urban air pollution (RUA) is an environmental health risk factor associated with increased cardiac events. This study investigated the threshold level to induce arrhythmia, as well as arrhythmogenic mechanism of RUA that mainly consisted of PM <2.5 μm in aerodynamic diameter close to ultrafine particles. Methods: RUA was artificially produced by a lately developed pyrolysis based RUA generator. C57BL/6 mice were divided into 4 groups: a control group (control, n=12) and three groups with exposure to RUA with the concentration of 200 µg/m3 (n=12), 400 µg/m3 (n=12), and 800 µg/m3 (n=12). Mice were exposed to RUA at each concentration for 8 hr/day and 5 day/week to mimic ordinary human activity during 3 weeks. Results: The QRS and QTc intervals, as well as intracellular Ca2+ duration, apicobasal action potential duration (APD) gradient, fibrosis, and inflammation of left ventricle of mouse hearts were increased dose-dependently with the increase of RUA concentration, and significantly increased at RUA concentration of 400 µg/m3 compared to control (all p<0.001). In mice exposed to RUA concentration of 800 µg/m3, spontaneous ventricular arrhythmia was observed in 42%, with significant increase of inflammatory markers, phosphorylated Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II (CaMKII), and phospholamban (PLB) compared to control. Conclusions: RUA could induce electrophysiological changes such as APD and QT prolongation, fibrosis, and inflammation dose-dependently, with significant increase of ventricular arrhythmia at the concentration of 400 µg/m3. RUA concentration of 800 µg/m3 increased phosphorylation of CaMKII and PLB.
