Exploratory Research on Muscle Activity by Using fNIRS

Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) is a valuable tool for real-time emotion detection. This study explores the role of the Prefrontal Cortex, with a focus on blood flow changes induced by eye blinking in the Fp1 and Fp2 areas. Using Artinis Brite, four optodes were positioned based on the International 10-20 system. Participants executed left and right eye blinks, revealing distinct patterns of oxyhemoglobin. Fp1 exhibited increased activation during left blinks, while Fp2 demonstrated higher activation during right blinks. These findings challenge previous cognitive-centric fNIRS studies by highlighting responses related to facial muscles. Detecting emotions through eye movements provides efficient, non-intrusive emotional analysis, which is crucial for human-AI interactions and metaverse experiences. This innovative approach demonstrates real-time emotional monitoring using minimal sensors. This breakthrough enables accurate emotion detection without intrusive measures, advancing the field of emotional neuroscience.

This document explored the neural mechanisms underpinning motor execution (ME) and motor imagery (MI), focusing on the motor cortex’s critical regions, C3 and C4. These areas are instrumental in coordinating movements, adhering to a contralateral organization. To investigate these processes, we employed functional nearinfrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during ME and MI. Our experimental results obtained through fNIRS revealed contralateral patterns of brain activation, illustrating contralateral activation in the absence of actual movement.

Objectives Tongue diagnosis is an important diagnostic method in traditional Eastern medicine, and it has a high potential to be used in the future healthcare because of easy, quick, and non-contact measuring features. Recently, research and development efforts on computerized tongue diagnosis systems (CTDS) have been active that led to the technical advancements in the field of photographing techniques, image extraction and classification algorithms. In this study, we analyzed the trends in the CTDS patents. Using the WIPS search engine (www.wipsglobal.com), quantitative and qualitative patent analyses were performed through Korea, China, Japan, U.S.A and Europe. Methods For a systematic search and data analysis, we defined patent categories based on the application area and technical details. By applying thus-obtained categorical key words, we obtained 360 relevant patents on photographing techniques, image extraction and classification algorithms for the purpose of diagnosis or security. Results As a result, companies related to image acquisition, medical imaging and mobile devices and research groups of universities in East Asia were major patent applicants. In all the five countries, the number of patents have been increasing since 1980. In particular, technology related to color correction and image segmentation were most actively patented categories, and expected to continue a high application rate.

Objectives:This study was aimed to investigate clinical factors associated with the prediction of symptom improvement in hospitalized patients with bipolar disorder, manic episode. Methods:We performed a retrospective observational study based on the medical records review of 53 bipolar disorder manic patients, who had been hospitalized in the psychiatric ward. During the hospitalization, Young Mania Rating Scales(YMRS) have been measured periodically. Demographic information and clinical characteristics including medications and history of prior hospitalization have been collected in each patient. Linear mixed effect model has been used to assess the effect of clinical factors on the changes of YMRS over time. Selection of clinical factors was conducted using backward elimination with the minimization of Akaike Information Criterion. Results:Mean days of hospitalization were 29.74±16.96. Mean YMRS at the admission was 33.64±7.57. Effective factors for the model included YMRS at baseline, combination of mood stabilizer, and the history of prior hospitalization. Predicted YMRS at the discharge was 10.43(95% confidence interval 7.13–13.72). Conclusion:The current findings suggest the model which may predict the clinical course of the bipolar disorder manic patients. It would be useful to establish the treatment plan for the patients.

해상무역의 발달로 다양한 제품들의 해상운송이 증가하고 있다. 수분에 민감한 제품들은 이 과정에서 많은 양의 습기에 노출되어 고장이 발생한다. 흡습제는 이러한 습기를 제거하기 위해 사용되며, 흡습제로 조해성 이온염을 많이 사용하고 있다. 하지만, 이들은 습기를 흡습하여 물을 형성하는데 이러한 물이 누액될 경우 제품의 부식을 일으켜 금전적인 손실을 초래한다. 본 연구에서는 수분을 흡습하면서도 누액 문제를 해결하기 위해서 조해성이 우수한 calcium chloride(CaCl₂) 또는 magnesium chloride(MgCl₂)의 이온염에 치환도가 서로 다른 carboxymethyl cellulose(CMC) 고분자를 도입하여 하이드로젤형 흡습제를 제조하였다. 하이드로젤형 흡습제는 물리적 가교를 통해서 이온염의 함량이 많을수록, 조해성이 우수할수록, CMC의 치환도가 낮을수록 더 높은 수분 흡습률을 보였지만, 점도는 감소되는 경향을 보였다. 또한 이러한 특성들은 이온염에 따라 변화하는 pH에 영향을 받은 것으로 알 수 있었다. Maritime transport of various products has been increased with developing seaborne trade. Moisture-sensitive products are exposed to a large amount of moisture during transport and broken down. Ionic salts having deliquescence often used as a desiccant for moisture removal. Although ionic salts produce water by moisture absorption, the leak of ionic salt-based aqueous solution seriously disrupts the products, resulting in financial loss. In this study, hydrogel-based desiccants showing simultaneous leak-proof and high moisture absorption ratio were prepared by calcium chloride (CaCl₂) or magnesium chloride (MgCl₂) exhibiting deliquescence with carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) having different degree of substitution. Moisture absorption ratio of the hydrogel-based desiccants depended on the kind and the content of the deliquescent ionic salts and the substitution degree of CMC because they decide to make the physical crosslinking. However, viscosity of the hydrogel-based desiccants inversely decreased with increasing moisture absorption ratio. Also, pH changes depend on the sort of the deliquescent ionic salts and strongly affects the moisture absorption ratio and viscosity.
