      • 膣腔錄膿菌의 細菌學的 特性에 關하여

        Bacteriological studies were carried out in order to observe the homogenicity of the isolated strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa from vaginal cavities. Although some strains have lost pyocyanine production by subculture, all strains have maintained oxidase formation and most strains were confined to pyocin typo I of Gillies and Govan's formula. Except slight strain difference of sensitivity against polymyxin B, all strains showed homogenicity in sensitivities to gentamicin, colistin and polymyxin B. All test strains also confined to single sego-type 6 of Homma scheme. By above assay, it was possible to comfirm the interesting finding of homogenicity of vaginal strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.

      • 오염된 토양과 점토 차단벽을 정화하기 위한 작업으로 제올라이트와 점토를 적용하는 신기술

        중금속이나 비소, 기타 독성 오염 물질에 의해 오염된 물과 토양은 항상 인간의 활동에 의해 만들어 진 것이다. 오염된 토양을 효과적으로 정화하는 기술은 화학물질이나 유기화합물, 콘크리트 들과 같은 인공 물질을 대신하여 제올라이트, 화산성 롬(풍화된 화산재), 돌로마이트와 같은 천연의 물질을 사용하는 것으로 개발되고 있다. 양이온 교환이나 흡착과정은 오염된 토양에서 이들 유해 중금속과 비소를 고정시키거나 함수된 알칼리류 또는 알칼리토류를 부 구성 성분으로 하는 알루미노실리케이트로 새롭게 결정체를 만들어 침전시킨다. 유해 중금속을 고정하거나 잡기위해 천연 물질을 사용하는 기술은 “Sealing Soil Technique (토양 밀봉 기술)” 이라 한다. 이 기술은 오염된 토양 뿐만 아니라 도시 지역의 최종 매립지의 차단벽이나 차단층으로 쓰이는 점토 차단벽의 물질을 정화하는 것에 적용될 수 있다. 이것의 커다란 장점 중의 하나는 정화 처리와 차단층 물질로 쓰이는 화학 물질이나 유기물이 분해된 것의 침투로부터 유래하는 2차 오염을 막는다는 것이다. 유사한 기술을 이용하여 다양한 오염원으로부터 중금속이나 비소로 오염된 물과 토양을 정화하기 위한 주된 천연 물질인 제올라이트, 점토, 돌로마이트와 “TRP”라 명명된 기타 다른 물질들의 혼합물을 이용한 저비용의 효과적인 방법이 개발되었다. 이것은 중화, 산화, 침전과 pH 조절로 침전된 중금속과 비소를 여과하는 과정을 포함한다. Contaminated soil and water by heavy metals, arsenic and other toxic pollutions are usually created under human activities. An effective remediation technique for the polluted land has been developed using of natural materials, such as zeolite, volcanic loam (weathered volcanic ash), and dolomite, instead of artificial materials, such as chemicals, organic compounds, concrete, and etc. The mechanism of cation exchange and/or adsorption conducts those hazardous heavy metals and arsenic in the polluted soil to be fixed and settled into newly crystallized hydrous alkaline and alkaline earth aluminosilicates as minor elements. The technique to use natural materials that trap and fix hazardous metals is called as Sealing Soil Technique. This is applicable not only for the remediation for polluted soil but also for materials of clay barrier to be used as a wall and/or bed of final waste disposal site of urban area. One of the immense advantages is to prevent secondary pollution derived from seepage that contains decomposed chemical substances and organic matters, used for the remediation treatment and barrier material. Using the similar technique we have develop effective procedure in low cost using a prescribed mixture of mainly natural material, zeolite, clay, dolomite and others under the name of TRP for remediation of contaminated water with heavy metals and arsenic from various sources. It includes a process to neutralize, oxidize, precipitate and filtrate out the precipitates of metals and arsenic under severe pH control.

        나이관련황변변성 환자들의 항산화 영양제 복용에 대한 설문조사

        목적: 중등도 이상의 황반변성을 진단받고 AREDS2 formula를 복용하고 있는 환자들의 복용 실태에 대해서 조사해 보고자 하였다. 대상과 방법: 2019년 12월부터 2020년 7월까지 황반변성 환자를 대상으로 전향적으로 설문조사를 시행하였다. 설문지는 인구학적 특성, 질병에 대한 인식, 영양제 복용 실태 등에 대해 총 24문항을 조사하였다. 결과: 총 100명의 환자가 포함되었으며, 남자가 56%였고 연령은 60대 이상이 89%였다. 질환에 대한 이해도, 금연의 필요성, 항산화 영양제의 필요성에 대해 안다고 대답한 비율은 66%, 84%, 93%였다. 복용 실태 조사에서 복용 중인 약을 정확히 알고 있는 환자는 58%였고, 이 중 AREDS2 영양제를 제대로 복용하고 있는 환자는 63.8% (전체 환자의 37%)였다. 또한, 영양제 성분에 대해서 알고 있는 환자는 8%, 영양제를 매일 복용한다고 답한 환자는 91%였다. 복용 실태와 인식에 영향을 미치는 인자로 유병 기간이 길어질수록 황반변성 영양제를 복용하는 빈도가 줄어드는 경향이 있었으며(p<0.05), 연령이 높고 저학력일수록 황반변성질환에 대한 인지가 낮았다(p<0.05). 결론: 황반변성 영양제 복용 실태 조사에서 정확한 AREDS2 formula를 복용하지 않는 환자들이 있어 이에 대한 보완책이 필요할 것으로 생각된다. Purpose: To investigate the use of second AREDS2 formula in patients with intermediate or advanced age-related macular degeneration. Methods: A prospective survey was conducted between December 2019 and July 2020. The questionnaire consisted of 24 questions on demographics, disease perception, and formula intake. Results: The survey included 100 patients (males, 56%; age [>60 years], 89%). We found that 66%, 84%, and 93% of patients had a good understanding of their disease, had stopped smoking, and were aware of the need for antioxidant supplements; 58% of patients were aware of the supplement they were prescribed, and 63.8% (37% of total) were using the AREDS2 formula. Only 8% of patients had knowledge regarding the supplement ingredients, and 91% consumed the supplement daily. Patients with long disease duration used supplements less frequently (p < 0.05). Older patients and those with a low education level had a limited perception of the disease (p < 0.05). Conclusions: In this prospective survey, some patients consumed supplements other than the AREDS2 formula. Further studies are required to determine ways to increase the use of the AREDS2 formula.

        율무 청국장 분말과 밀겨 분말을 활용한 아메리칸 쿠키의 항산화 활성과 품질 특성

        Job`s tears(Coix lachryma-jobi L.) chungkukjang powder and wheat bran powder were added to American cookies for practical use as healthy compounds. We examined the antioxidant activity and quality characteristics of cookies prepared with different amounts(as ratios of 10%, 20%, 25% to the flour quantity) of Job`s tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder. The antioxidant activity was estimated by DPPH free radical scavenging activity, the total phenolic compounds content and flavonoid content in Job`s tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder and cookies. The quality characteristics of Job`s tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder American cookie were estimated in terms of bulk density, pH of the dough, spread ratio, color, texture profile analysis, proximate composition, and sensory evaluations. While the spread ratio and the total polyphenol contents, flavonoid contents and DPPH free radical scavenging activity of cookies significantly increased, pH, hardness and L value of the cookies decreased with increasing Job`s tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder(p<0.01). The consumer acceptability score for the 10~20% Job`s tears chungkukjang & wheat bran powder American cookie ranked significantly(p<0.05) higher than those of the other groups in texture andoverall preference. This suggests that Job`s tears chungkukjang and wheat bran powder are good ingredient candidates for increasing consumer acceptability and functionality of cookies.

        토양 복원으로부터 배수된 물은 기준 농도에 만족시키기 위해서 적절한 처리가 이루어져야만 한다. 토양 복원 작업은 설정된 사항에 따라 site 마다 임시적으로 일어나며, 배수된 물의 특성은 각 site의 상태와 연령에 의존하여 다양하게 변하게 된다. 배수된 물에 대한 처리시설 설계는 매우 호환적이다. 배수된 물에 함유한 오염물질들은 침전방법으로 제거가 일어나며, 부유물질 혹은 용존성 중금속 이온 같은 침전하기 어려운 물질은 침전 방법으로 제거하기 위해서 고형물 형태로 전환되어야만 한다. 본 연구에서, TRP는 중금속 회수를 위한 가장 효과적인 약품이며, 종합적인 운영비용을 최소하기 위해, 첨가제의 양을 감소시킬 수 있는 것으로 판단된다. The water that drained from land remediation works must be treated to satisfy the limit of required values for the concentration of pollutants. As the land remediation works occur temporarily site-by-site following the demands, and the nature of the drained water varies depending on the histories and conditions of each sites, design of water treatment system for the drained water must be flexible. Contaminants contained in the drained water are removed out by precipitation method. Materials that difficult to precipitate such as suspended substances or dissolved metal ions must be converted to the solid form to be removed out by the precipitation. Adjustment of pH and use of flocculating agent is helpful for the conversion and the precipitation. We found TRP is one of the most effective agents for recovery of heavy metals, reducing the amount of other additive agents so that to minimize the total operating cost.

        Identification of Guideline-Based Components for Innovative Science Curricula

        In both Korea and the U.S., science education leaders and specialists insist that there is a shortage of curricula to address the new national science education guidelines in support of reform. This paper addresses development of new curricula for science education reform in the hopes of facilitating further development of guideline-based curricula. We examine Korean and U.S. thematic-based (Korean Science Field Trip at Cultural Sites Program and U.S. Graduate Teaching Fellows in K-12 Education) and project-centered (Korean Teachers for Exciting Science and U.S. Foundational Approaches in Science Teaching Program) programs. Using the criteria of rationale for curriculum, content and scope, processes of implementation, and assessment strategies, we identify the curricular components that are common across four successful secondary science programs and determine which of these components address the national guidelines. Our findings indicate that common components of these four programs meet the expectations of the science guidelines being used to revamp science education in both countries. Therefore, these programs not only engage secondary students and teachers in practicing successful science education, but also lead to successful science education practices that can be incorporated in the future development of curriculum to support secondary science reform.

        한국인 조현병 환자에서CNR1 유전자의 (AAT)n 삼핵산 반복 다형성과 안구추적운동 이상에 대한 연합 연구

        Objectives According to previous studies, the cannabinoid receptor 1 (CNR1) gene could be an important candidate gene for schizophrenia. Some studies have linked the (AAT)n trinucleotide repeat polymorphism in CNR1 gene with the risk of schizophrenia. Meanwhile, smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) has been regarded as one of the most consistent endophenotypes of schizophrenia. In this study, we investigated the association between the (AAT)n trinucleotide repeats in CNR1 gene and SPEM abnormality in Korean patients with schizophrenia. Methods We measured SPEM function in 167 Korean patients with schizophrenia (84 male, 83 female) and they were divided according to SPEM function into two groups, good and poor SPEM function groups. We also investigated allele frequencies of (AAT)n repeat polymorphisms on CNR1 gene in each group. A logistic regression analysis was performed to find the association between SPEM abnormality and the number of (AAT)n trinucleotide repeats. Results The natural logarithm value of signal/noise ratio (Ln S/N ratio) of the good SPEM function group was $4.34{\pm}0.29$ and that of the poor SPEM function group was $3.21{\pm}0.70$. In total, 7 types of trinucleotide repeats were identified, each containing 7, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, and 15 repeats, respectively. In the patients with $(AAT)7$ allele, the distributions of the good and poor SPEM function groups were 18 (11.1%) and 19 (11.0%) respectively. In the patients with $(AAT)_{10}$ allele, $(AAT)_{11}$ allele, $(AAT)_{12}$ allele, $(AAT)_{13}$ allele, $(AAT)_{14}$ allele and $(AAT)_{15}$ allele, the distributions of good and poor SPEM function groups were 13 (8.0%) and 12 (7.0%), 4 (2.5%) and 6 (3.5%), 31 (19.8%) and 35 (20.3%), 51 (31.5%) and 51 (29.7%), 36 (22.2%) and 45 (26.2%), 9 (5.6%) and 4 (2.3%) respectively. As the number of (AAT) n repeat increased, there was no aggravation of abnormality of SPEM function. Conclusions There was no significant aggravation of SPEM abnormality along with the increase of number of (AAT)n trinucleotide repeats in the CNR1 gene in Korean patients with schizophrenia.
