Diagnostic Significance of Brainstem Auditory Evoked Potentials in Microvascular Decompression of Patients with Hemifacial Spasm or Trigeminal Neuralgia

        ( Sang-koo Park ),( Sung-hyuk Lim ),( Chan-woo Park ),( Jin-woo Park ),( Sung-ho Chang ),( Keun-hye Park ),( Hae-ja Park ),( Ji-hye Song ),( Dong-ok Uhm ),( Ki-bong Kim ) 대한임상검사과학회 2011 대한임상검사과학회지(KJCLS) Vol.43 No.1

The purpose of this study was to analyse brainstem auditory evoked potentials (BAEP) wave change data during microvascular decompression (MVD). The nerve function of Cranial Nerve VIII is at risk during MVD. Intraoperative monitoring of BAEP can be a useful tool to decrease the danger of hearing loss. Between January and December 2009, 242 patients had MVD for hemifacial spasm (HFS) and trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Among intraoperative BAEP changes, amplitude of V-V’ was the most frequently observed during cerebellar retraction and decompression step of the MVD procedure. 138 patients (57%) had no BAEP change while 104 patients (42.98%) had BAEP change. 69 patients (28.5%) had Type A-I, 16 patients (6.6%) had Type A-II, 5 patients (2.1%) had Type B, and 13 patients (5.37%) had Type C. MVD is a surgical procedure to relieve the symptoms (e.g. pain, muscle twitching) caused by compression of a nerve by an artery or vein. During BAEP intraoperative monitoring, the surgical step is important in interpreting the changes of wave V. Several potential mechanisms of injury may affect the cochlear nerve, and complete loss of BAEP is often associated with postoperative hearing loss. Intraoperative BAEP monitoring may provide an early warning of hearing disturbance after MVD.

The Relationship between Psychological Factors and Weight Gain

Hye Jin Jang,Byung-Sung Kim,Chang Won Won,김선영,Myung Weon Seo 대한가정의학회 2020 Korean Journal of Family Medicine Vol.41 No.6

Background: This study aimed to investigate stress, depression, sleeping time, physical activity, and dietary patterns as factors causing weight gain and investigate which of these factors have a greater effect on weight gain. Methods: Data were obtained from the seventh Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, 2016. Among the respondents, 3,163 adults aged 19–64 years were included in the survey, after excluding non-responders and those with diseases that may affect weight change. The t-test and chi-square test were used to analyze the relationship between weight gain and general characteristics. Logistic regression analysis was performed to evaluate weight changes according to stress, depression, sleep time, physical activity, and dietary patterns and evaluate the odds ratios (ORs) for measuring these associations. Results: Participants in the weight gain group were younger and more likely to be obese than those in the control group. Factors that could cause weight gain among women were stress awareness (OR, 1.271; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.012–1.597), physical inactivity (OR, 1.250; 95% CI, 1.018–1.535), and skipping breakfast (OR, 1.277; 95% CI, 1.028–1.587). Depression was significantly associated with weight gain among women, but not after adjusting for other variables. There were no significant associations with sleeping time. None of these factors in men were significantly associated with weight gain. Conclusion: Stress awareness was significantly associated with weight gain among women, while other psychological factors were not significantly associated with weight gain.

Changes of Sugar Composition and Related Enzyme Activities during Fruit Development of Asian Pear Cultivars ‘Niitaka’ and ‘Whangkeumbae’

        Jin-Ho Choi,Jang-Jeon Choi,Chang-Seok Bang,Jung-Sup Lee,Dong-Woog Choi,Hye-Sun Cho,Jun Cheul Ahn 한국원예학회 2009 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.50 No.6

We report on the seasonal changes of soluble sugar accumulation and several enzyme activities related to sugar metabolism, in two Asian pear cultivars (Pyrus pyrifolia) cultivars ‘Niitaka’ and ‘Whangkeumbae’. Soluble sugar content increased as the fruit developed and its total contents in matured fruits were 104.6 and 95.1 ㎎ㆍg?¹ fresh weight for ‘Niitaka’ and ‘Whangkeumbae’, respectively. However, the fructose-glucose-sucrose-sorbitol ratio was not significantly changed. Sorbitol-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity was maintained at high level in leaves and low in fruits throughout the fruit development, although the enzyme activity highly fluctuated in young and mature fruits. NAD-dependent sorbitol dehydrogenase activity increased sigmoidally in both leaves and fruits during fruit development, and correlated with accumulation of total sugar in fruits. Sucrose synthase and sucrose phosphate synthase (SPS) activities remained low in leaves, but higher with two peak fluctuations in fruits. The change of soluble sugar contents positively correlated with SPS activity, based on the seasonal fluctuation of SPS activity and soluble sugar accumulation.

A Multicenter Analysis of Clinical Features and Long-Term Outcomes of POEMS Syndrome in Korea

        Kook Hye Won,Jang Ji Eun,Min Chang-Ki,Yoon Dok Hyun,Kim Kihyun,Bang Soo-Mee,Park Yong,Lee Jae Hoon,Yoon Sung-Soo,Kim Jin Seok 대한의학회 2024 Journal of Korean medical science Vol.39 No.2

Background: POEMS syndrome is a rare form of plasma cell dyscrasia characterized by polyneuropathy, organomegaly, endocrinopathy, monoclonal proteins, and skin changes. Owing to its low incidence, there are few reports regarding this syndrome. This multicenter study included 84 patients diagnosed with POEMS syndrome in South Korea. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 84 patients diagnosed with POEMS syndrome at 8 hospitals in South Korea between January 2000 and October 2022. The clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes were analyzed. Results: The median patient age was 53 years (range, 26–77 years), and 63.1% of the patients were male. All patients had peripheral neuropathy, and 81 (96.4%) had monoclonal plasma cell proliferation. Plasma vascular endothelial growth factor levels were available for 32 patients with a median of 821 pg/mL (range, 26–12,900 pg/mL). Other common features included skin changes (54.2%), volume overload (71.4%), and organomegaly (72.6%). Of the 84 patients, 75 received initial treatment (local radiotherapy, 6 [8.0%]; chemotherapy, 17 [22.7%]; both chemotherapy and local radiotherapy, 9 [12.0%]), upfront autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), 43 (57.3%; with induction chemotherapy, n = 12, 16.0%; without induction chemotherapy, n = 31, 41.3%). The median follow-up duration was 40.7 months. The 5-year overall survival (OS) was 78%, and the 5-year progression-free survival (PFS) was 55%. Patients who underwent upfront ASCT and were diagnosed after 2014 had a longer OS and PFS. Conclusion: The demographics of Korean patients with POEMS syndrome were similar to those reported previously. Because of the introduction of new treatment agents and the reduced rate of transplant-related mortality related to ASCT, the treatment outcomes of Korean patients with POEMS syndrome have improved in recent years.

Interpenetration Control, Sorption Behavior, and Framework Flexibility in Zn(II) Metal–Organic Frameworks

Park, Ji Hye,Lee, Woo Ram,Kim, Yeonga,Lee, Hye Jin,Ryu, Dae Won,Phang, Won Ju,Hong, Chang Seop The American Chemical Society 2014 CRYSTAL GROWTH AND DESIGN Vol.14 No.2

<P>Three Zn(II) frameworks [Zn(H2L)(bdc)]·1.4DEF·0.6H2O (<B>1</B>; H2L = 1,4-di(1H-imidazol-4-yl)benzene, H2bdc = terephthalic acid), [Zn(H2L)(bdc)]·1.5DMF·1.2H2O (<B>2</B>), and [Zn(H2L)(L)0.5(bdc)0.5]·formamide·H2O (<B>3</B>) were prepared under the solvothermal conditions in DEF/H2O, DMF/H2O, and formamide/H2O solvent pairs, respectively. All compounds are commonly based on the adamantanoid three-dimensional networks that are mutually entangled to form a 3-fold (<B>1</B>) to 4-fold (<B>2</B>) to 5-fold interpenetrating <B>dia</B> structure (<B>3</B>). The solvent pairs used in the reactions are primarily responsible for the variation of such interpenetration degree. It is noted that the reaction time, temperature, and reactant ratio applied in the present system (<B>2</B>) did not lead to the interpenetration change. The activated sample (<B>1a</B>) shows the gas uptake of N2, H2, and CO2, characteristic of permanent porosity in the flexible framework, while the gases of N2 and H2 are not adsorbed on <B>2</B> and <B>3</B>. The porous compound (<B>1</B>) also exhibits the reversible inclusion and release of I2 in MeOH. Interestingly, <B>2</B> reveals the reversible structural transformation during the activation–resolvation process where the solid can be activated through two routes (solvent exchange/desolvation and direct desolvation). However, there is no appreciable structural flexibility upon solvent exchange in <B>3</B> with 5-fold interpenetration, indicating that this framework is more robust, compared to <B>1</B> and <B>2</B> with lower interpenetration degrees.</P><P>Three Zn(II) frameworks were prepared, exhibiting 3- to 4- to 5-fold interpenetration upon solvent size variation from DEF to DMF to formamide, respectively. Gas and I2 sorption takes place in the flexible 3-fold system. Solvent-exchange engenders the reversible structural transformation in the 4-fold system, while the framework is robust in the 5-fold system.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/cgdefu/2014/cgdefu.2014.14.issue-2/cg401583v/production/images/medium/cg-2013-01583v_0005.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/cg401583v'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Safety and efficacy of dietary supplement (gintonin-enriched fraction from ginseng) in subjective memory impairment: A randomized placebo-controlled trial

        Lee Woo-Jin,Shin Yong-Won,Chang Hyeyeon,Shin Hye-Rim,Kim Won-Woo,Jung Seok-Won,Kim Manho,Nah Seung-Yeol 한국한의학연구원 2022 Integrative Medicine Research Vol.11 No.1

Background: Gintonin inhibits β-amyloid production, increases acetylcholine level in the brain, and promotes neurogenesis. We evaluated the efficacy of gintonin-enriched fraction (GEF) in improving the cognitive performance in subjective memory impairment. Methods: In this 8-week, randomized, assessor and participant blinded, placebo–controlled study, participants with subjective memory impairment but preserved cognitive function (Korean Mini-Mental State Examination [K-MMSE] score ≥23) were assigned to GEF 300mg/day or placebo. K-MMSE, Korean versions of the Alzheimer's disease assessment scale, color-word stroop test (K-CWST), clinical dementia rating, and Beck depression inventory-II were evaluated along with the safety profiles. The primary outcome was set as the change in the K-MMSE. Results: Seventy-six participants complete the study protocol. After 8 weeks, there was no inter-group difference in the primary or secondary outcome score changes. However, GEF group showed an improvement in the K-MMSE scores (P= 0.026), and in the number of correct answers in both word reading (P= 0.008) and color reading (P= 0.005) of K-CWST, although only the improvement in the K-CWST scores were higher than the minimum clinically important difference. The frequency of adverse events was comparable between the groups and all were of mild severity. Conclusion: GEF is safe but might not be effective in treating subjective memory impairment within the current study setting. However, GEF showed a trend of improving the global cognition and the frontal executive function. Further large-sized studies with longer follow-up period are warranted. Clinical trial registration: This clinical trial was registered at Clinical Research Information Service of Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention: KCT0004636. Structure and Property Modification of Bimodal Molecular Weight Distribution Polyethylene by Electron Beam Irradiation

        Lee, Sang-Man,Jeon, Hye-Jin,Choi, Sun-Woong,Song, Hyun-Hoon,Nho, Young-Chang,Cho, Kyu-Cheol The Polymer Society of Korea 2006 Macromolecular Research Vol.14 No.6

Polyethylene of bimodal molecular weight distribution was irradiated with an electron beam. The thermal and mechanical properties were examined by DSC, small and wide angle X-ray scattering and static tensile test according to the crystal morphology of the irradiated samples. The crystal morphology change upon irradiation, as revealed by wide angle X-ray scattering, correlated well with the changes in melting enthalpy, whereas the lamellar thickness and the amorphous gap thickness remained virtually unchanged at irradiation doses up to 500 kGy. Crosslinks in the crystal domains became evident at an energy level of 250 kGy, resulting in reduced crystallinity and crystal size of the (110) and (200) planes. The samples became stiff and brittle with increased irradiation dose, which seem to be more relevant to the amount of cross links than the crystal morphology changes.
