        In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

        방사선조사가 당뇨 백서의 치주조직에 미치는 영향

        Purpose : To observe the histopathological changes in the periodontal tissues of mandibular molars in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats after irradiation. Materials and Methods : The male Sprague-Dawley rats weighing approximately 250 gm were divided into four groups: control, diabetes, irradiation, and diabetes- irradiation groups. Diabetes mellitus was induced in the rats by injecting streptozotocin. Rats in the control and irradiation groups were injected with citrate buffer only. After 5 days, the head and neck region of the rats in irradiation and diabetes irradiation groups were irradiated with a single absorbed dose of 10 Gy. All the rats were sacrificed at 3, 7, 14, 21, and 28 days after irradiation. The specimen including the mandibular molars were sectioned and observed using a histopathological method. Results : In the diabetes group, osteoclastic activity was observed in the alveolar bone and the root throughout the period of experiment. Also, osteoblastic and fibroblastic activities were markedly decreased. In the irradiation group, the osteoclasts were observed in the alveolar bone and the dilated capillaries were increased in the early experimental phases. However, vigorous osteoblastic activity was noted in the late experimental phases. In the diabetes-irradiation group, osteoclastic activity in the alveolar bone and the root was observed in the early experimental phases. However, there were no resorption and osteoblastic activity in the alveolar bone and the root in the late experimental phases, and obvious atrophic change of fibrous tissues was noted. Conclusion : This experiment suggests that osteoblastic activity was caused by irradiation in the late experimental phases, but atrophic change of the periodontal ligament tissues was induced after irradiation in diabetic state.

      • Highly Sensitive Color Tunablility by Scalable Nanomorphology of a Dielectric Layer in Liquid-Permeable Metal-Insulator-Metal Structure

        <P>A liquid-permeable concept in a metal-insulator-metal (MIM) structure is proposed to achieve highly sensitive color-tuning property through the change of the effective refractive index of the dielectric insulator layer. A semicontinuous top metal film with nanoapertures, adopted as a transreflective layer for MIM resonator, allows to tailor the nanomorphology of a dielectric layer through selective etching of the underneath insulator layer, resulting in nanopillars and hollow voids in the insulator layer. By allowing outer mediums to enter into the hollow voids of the dielectric layer, such liquid-permeable MIM architecture enables to achieve the wavelength shift as large as 323.5 nm/RIU in the visible range, which is the largest wavelength shift reported so far. Our liquid-permeable approaches indeed provide dramatic color tunablility, a real-time sensing scheme, long-term durability, and reproducibility in a simple and scalable manner.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>

        Excretion of Dissolved Organic Substances in the Photosynthesis and Autolysis Process of Cyanobacterium ( Blue - Green Algae )

        무균상태의 남조류 Phormidium tenue와 Anabaena macrospora를 명조건과 암조건하에서 배양하여 두조류로부터 배출되는 세포의대사산물의 배출거동을 조사하였다. 명조건하에서 대수증식기중에서는 조류수가 배양시간에 따라 수백배 증가하였으나 용존탄소(DOC)성분는 비교적 균일한 상태를 보였고, 안정기에 들어가면서 배양시간에 따라 DOC가 축적되기 시작하였다. Phormidium tenue와 Anabuena macrospora의 DOC 비배출속도는 각각 대수증식에는 0.013, 0.048㎎DOC/㎎POC/day, 안정기에는 0.093, 0.078㎎DOC/㎎POC/day로 평가되어 안정기의 조류가 대수증식기의 것보다 약 2∼7배정도 많이 배출되는 것으로 나타났다. DOC성분중의 탄수화물(탄소로서)의 비율은 전배양기간을 통하여 거의 일정하였으며, Phormidium tenue에 대해서는 약 40%, Anabaena macrospora에 대해서는 약 60%를 차지하는 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 단백질성분은 안정기에 크게 증가하며 그후에는 거의 일정한 수준을 나타내었다. 암조건하에서 DOC성분은 조류의 자기용해에 의해 증가하였으며, 그 배출속도는 Phormidium tenue가 0.045㎎DOC/㎎POC/day, Anabaena macrospora가 0.024㎎DOC/mgPOC/day인 것으로 평가되었다. 용존유기물 중의 탄수화물 함유율은 50∼60%정도이고 단백질은 5∼30%정도로 조류종에 따라 큰 차이가 있었다. 조류의 호흡기간중에는 용존유기물이 배출되지 않고, 세포가 완전히 죽은 후 자기용해에 의하여 배출되는 것으로 나타났다. Two kinds of blue green algae, Phormidium tenue and Anabaena macrospora, were cultivated experimentally under bacteria-free condition, and the behaviors of extracellular substances excreted by both algae were investigated under light and dark condition. Under the light condition, the number of algal cells was increased by a hundredfold approximately with cultivation time, and DOC concentration of two cultures remained relatively constant level during the logarithmic growth phase. As the cultures entered into the stationary phase, DOC concentration began to accumulate. DOC excretion rates of Phormidium tenue and Anabaena macrospora were 0.013 and 0.048㎎ DOC/㎎ POC/day during the logarithmic phase, and 0.093 and 0.078㎎ DOC/㎎ POC/day during the stationary phase. The rates during the stationary phase were about 2 to 7 times higher than the logarithmic phase. The ratios of carbon concentration of carbohydrates to total DOC were almost constant. The values were 40% for Phormidium tenue and 60% for Anabaena macrospora during the overall incubation period. While, protein concentration increased during the stationary phase, and then leveled off. Under the dark condition, DOC concentration increased by the progress of algal autolysis, and DOC excretion rates by autolysis were estimated to be 0.045㎎ DOC/㎎ POC/day for Phormidium tenue and 0.024㎎ DOC/㎎ POC/day for Anabaena macrospora. The portion of cabohydrates was 50 to 60%, and protein was 5 to 30% in dissolved organic substances. In this study, it is confirmed that the components of algal by-products are different by algal species and the excretion of by-products was occured in the photosynthesis and autolysis period but not in respiration period.

        Exploiting Mobility for Efficient Data Dissemination in Wireless Sensor Networks

        In this paper, we introduce a novel mobility model for mobile sinks in which the sinks move towards randomly distributed destinations, where each destination is associated with a mission. The novel mobility model is termed the random mobility with destinations. There have been many studies on mobile sinks; however, they merely support two extreme cases of sink mobility. The first case features the most common and general mobility, with the sinks moving randomly, unpredictably, and inartificially. The other case takes into account mobility only along predefined or determined paths such that the sinks can gather data from sensor nodes with minimum overhead. Unfortunately, these studies for the common mobility and predefined path mobility might not suit for supporting the random mobility with destinations. In order to support random mobility with destination, we propose a new protocol, in which the source nodes send their data to the next movement path of a mobile sink. To implement the proposed protocol, we first present a mechanism for predicting the next movement path of a mobile sink based on its previous movement path. With the information about predicted movement path included in a query packet, we further present a mechanism that source nodes send energy-efficiently their data along the next movement path before arriving of the mobile sink. Last, we present mechanisms for compensating the difference between the predicted movement path and the real movement path and for relaying the delayed data after arriving of the mobile sink on the next movement path, respectively. Simulation results show that the proposed protocol achieves better performance than the existing protocols.

      • Usefulness of medical review in the insurance claims

        Background : Many of internists have been working for insurance industry. Insurance medicine is use of medical knowledge for insurance industry. There is social role of insurance medicine in terms of soundness of insurance administration. Recently social role of internists also have been being watched. Although theme of insurance medicine is medical risk selection, insurance claims administration also needs medical experts'opinion. There are not any corroborative study of medical consulting for insurance claims. Among insurance industry, someone called this medical review of insurance claims as 'medical claims review'. Aim : To investigate usefulness of medical review of insurance claims. Design : Questionnaire survey with claim staffs in one of insurance claim adjustment company in Korea. Methods : 265 claim staffs were divided into 4 groups and conducted survey using a questionnaire of 20 questions. Utility score, job satisfaction score, and difficult factors of claims administration were measured. Results : Utility score and job satisfaction score are highest in medical claims review group. The most difficult in claim administration to claim staffs was demonstrated to medical knowledge. Conclusion : Medical review of insurance claims is proved to be worthy. Document-based consulting method, namely medical claims review, is more useful than telephone-based simple query among claim staffs...Subjects of the medical claims review are medical record and it's principle is independent medical examination with evidence-based approach, it also has role of protecting fraud of insurance claims. Two main question types of medical claims review are verification and advice.

      • Optimal Outer-Loop Position Controller for Two-Wheeled Mobile Balancing Robot Based-on Off-Line Optimization Technique

        This study proposes an off-line optimization technique based position controller for two-wheeled mobile balancing robot (2-WMBR) applications. The contribution of this article is to systematically design the outer-loop system through a surface analysis method, which is a kind of offline optimization techniques, without robot parameters. The classical linear quadratic regulator (LQR) technique is applied to the inner-loop system without any modification. The LEGO Mindstorms controlled by the MATLAB/Simulink software is used to confirm the efficacy of the proposed technique.
