Combined scanning tunneling microscopy and surface magneto-optic Kerr effect studies were employedto study the relation between magnetic properties and the microscopic interfacial structuresof ultrathin Co/p3×p3−R30˚-Ag/Si(111) films. On the top of p3×p3−R30˚-Ag/Si(111), pureCo clusters formed without disrupting the p3 × p3 − R30˚ structure of the Ag buffer layer. Thegreat strain due to the large mismatch between Co and the substrate influenced the nucleation ofCo atoms to form large clusters. No magnetic hysteresis in the polar configuration was observed forfilms thinner than 10 monolayers. The easy axis of magnetization was in the surface plane. Cappingp3 × p3 − R30˚-Ag on top of the Si(111) surface before the deposition of the Co overlayerscan efficiently reduce the nonferromagnetic Co-Si compound to zero thickness. For Co coveragebetween 2.9 and 4.2 monolayers, a lower Curie temperature was observed in ultrathin films. Due tothe existence of a smooth interface between Co and the p3 × p3 − R30˚-Ag buffer, the coercivityfor Co/p3 × p3 − R30˚-Ag/Si(111) is smaller than that for Co/Si(111).
Safety Management Documentation Models for the Maritime Labour Convention, 2006

The Maritime Labour Convention, 2006 (MLC, 2006), which will enter into force in 2012 or 2013, focuses on seafarers’ rights, safety and health in order to promote a better shipping environment. A Declaration of Maritime Labour Compliance Part II (DMLC II) is required to state the measures taken to ensure the quality of seafarers’ living and working conditions on-board a ship. It is a challenge for ship owners to establish such a document and fit it into the existing safety management systems, International Safety Management Code (ISM). This paper proposes four possible documentation models of the ship owners’ management system to cover the DMLC II with pros and cons. An appropriate documentation model not only benefits owners with regard to enforcement of the MLC, 2006, but also helps the flag and port state administrations to perform effective and efficient inspections.

A high environmental temperature affects the economic performance of pigs. Heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) has been reported to participate importantly in thermotolerance. This study aims to produce transgenic pigs overexpressing porcine HSP70.2, the highly inducible one of HSP70 members, and to prove the cellular thermotolerance in the primary fibroblasts from the transgenics. A recombinant plasmid in which the sequence that encodes the porcine HSP70.2 gene is fused to green fluorescence protein (GFP) was constructed under the control of cytomegalovirus (CMV) enhancer and promoter. Two transgenic pigs were produced by microinjecting pCMV-HSP70-GFP DNA into the pronucleus of fertilized eggs. Immunoblot assay revealed the varied overexpression level (6.4% and 1.4%) of HSP70-GFP in transgenic pigs. After heating at $45^{\circ}C$ for 3 h, the survival rate (78.1%) of the primary fibroblast cells from the highly expressing transgenic pig exceeded that from the non-transgenic pig (62.9%). This result showed that primary fibroblasts overexpressing HSP70-GFP confer cell thermotolerance. We suggest that transgenic pigs overexpressing HSP70 might improve their thermotolerance in summer and therefore reduce the economic loss in animal production.

Atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease, and its prevalence is increasing. AD usually elicits skin barrier dysfunction, dry skin and itching. As the mechanisms of AD remain unknown, there is an urgent need to find effective therapies. Because of the diversity and complexity of marine environments, the discovery of drugs from marine organisms as novel therapeutic agents for human diseases has seen renewed interest. Dihydroaustrasulfone alcohol (WA-25), the synthetic precursor of austrasulfone, which is a natural product isolated from a Formosan soft coral, has been shown to possess many therapeutic effects in our previous studies. However, the detailed mechanisms and therapeutic effects of WA-25 on AD are incompletely understood. We performed in vitro and in vivo studies to examine the effects of WA-25 on AD. We showed that WA-25 blocks inflammation and oxidative stress. Simultaneously, we also found that WA-25 reduces the AD scores and AD-induced transepidermal water loss (TEWL), scratching behavior, and alloknesis. WA-25 is more effective in cases of AD than are the drugs that are currently used clinically. Importantly, we also found that when nucleophosmin (NPM) was inhibited or when its expression was reduced, the anti-inflammatory and anti-AD effects of WA-25 were blocked. These data suggest that NPM plays dual roles in inflammation and AD. Overall, these results suggest that WA-25 is a potential anti-inflammatory and AD therapeutic agent that is modulated by NPM.
