        We experienced a 22-years-old female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) who was admitted with major depressive disorder symptoms such as a depressive mood, loss of appetite, weight loss, insomnia, and fatigue. She did not show any characteristic photosensitive cutaneous symptoms of SLE when she came to the hospital. Antidepressants and psychotherapy under hospitalization did not show any improvements in her depressive symptoms. Her past history revealed Raynaud's phenomenon and arthralgia, leukopenia, normochronic normocytic anemia and elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate were detected on her routine laboratory examinations. We considered an autoimmune connective tissue disease and performed specific hematologic and immunologic tests. We confirmed that her systemic symptoms and results of specific tests were fitted to a case of SLE, so we started prednisolone medication. After treating the patient with prednisolone for 2 weeks, her psychiatric and systemic symptoms of SLE were improved. We concluded that psychiatrists have to pay attention to SLE that can manifest depressive symptoms without characteristic photosensitive cutaneous symptoms of SLE.

      • 第五次 敎育課程에 의한 地球科學 敎科書의 實驗內容 分析 硏究

        The aim of this study is preparing materials to induce Earth Science teachers to instruct their students through research method. The method used in this paper is to analyze and compare the contents of the experimental parts in highschool Earth science textbooks in 5th curriculum which will be published in 1990 in Korea. This specific procedure is as follows; 1) To compare the number of experiments adopted in every textbooks(the number of experiments in each textbook and in chapters of every textbook). 2) To find out the errors by making each experiment in the every textbook. 3) To grope for new effective experimental methods. The result of the study is as follows; 1) The number of the kinds of experiments is 67 in 2nd volume of Science 1 and 45 in Earth Science. 2) The contents of experiments in every textbook are from one another. 3) The disposition of the experiments in every chapter is unbalanced. 4) Sixty percent of the total number of experiments is adopted in only one textbook. 5) The number of experiments that need to be correct is 23 percent in Earth science while 18 percent in the 2nd volume of Science 1.

      • 표면 온도 측정을 이용한 내부 결함 비파괴 검사 방법에 대한 연구

        This paper describes a new nondestructive testing method to find out a defect within a welded material. It is impossible to find whether there exist a defect such as a blowhole within the bonded material just by appearance. If there is a defect within the material, heat flow around the defect may be different with the case of the material with no defect. In this paper, the heat flow in the material with a defect is analyzed based upon heat conduction. A new method to detect a defect within the material is proposed based on the heat flow analysis. After heating the surface of the material for testing, we can detect whether there is a defect within the bonded part between two materials by the surface temperature measurement. This approach is applied on detecting defects in joining part of an oven bowl for an electiric rice cooker.

      • 백제 무령왕릉 및 송산리 5.6호분의 현황과 보존대책

        무령왕릉을 비롯한 송산리 고분군의 5호분 및 6호분의 발굴이후의 변화상황, 고분구조의 벽체거동 상황 및 구조안전, 누수현상, 고분 내에 서식하는 조류문제, 고분내 습기 및 결로현상 제거를 위한 공기조화시설 등을 포함하는 종합정밀조사를 1996년 5월 1일 부터 1997년 4월 30일 까지 1년간 수행하였다. 무령왕릉 및 6호분 벽돌깨김 상황 조사결과 1972년과 l996년을 비교하여 보면 벽돌파손율이 각각 2.5배와 2.9배로 증가하고 있다. 1972년 상황은 약 1450년간 진행된 것이고 l996년의 상황은 불과 24년간 진행된 것임을 감안할 때 고분이 발굴된 이후 벽돌의 균열은 상당한 가속도로 진행되어 온 것이 사실이며 이대로 진행된다면 더욱 더 가속화될 것으로 판단된다. 고분벽체의 거동상태를 계측한 결과 우기에 지하수 유입에 의한 지반의 약화로 인하여 건기보다 2배 정도 거동하는 양상을 보인다. 한편, 무령왕릉 연도 입구의 호벽은 전실쪽으로의 거동이 0.43 mm/myr, 연도쪽으로 2.05 mm/myr의 거동을 보여 무령왕릉에서는 가장 심한 거동을 보이고 있다. 봉분내부의 토양층구조에 대한 지오레이다 영상단면을 분석한 결과 지중의 누수방지층이 심하게 균열되어 있는 것으로 판단된다. 직접누수와 지하수 형태로 유입된 침투수는 고분군 주위의 지반의 함수비를 증가시켜 지반의 지지력을 악화시키고 또한 고문내로 서서히 유입되어 고분내부의 습도를 100% 로 유지시키는 주된 원인이다. 이러한 높은 습도는 고분내의 남조류의 번식을 초래하였다. 이와 같이 고분군의 발굴후 인위적인 환경변화와 지속적인 강우침투 및 배수 불량의 영향은 고분군의 안정성에 상당한 위험을 초래하였으며, 현 상태는 각 고분에 대한 보강이 불가피한 것으로 판단된다. 고분 벽돌의 깨짐, 고분 벽체의 거동, 조류의 서식 등올 포함하여 송산리 고분군에서 발생되고 있는 보존상의 제반 문제점들은 일차적으로 누수 및 침투수에 의한 결과이다. 그러므로 무엇보다도 고분군 내부 및 고분 주변으로의 강우 및 지하수 침투를 막는 차수 대책이 시급한 것으로 판단된다. 또한 이미 발생한 변위가 더 이상, 진행되지 않도록 봉분하중 경감 빛 토압균형을 이루는 보강대책이 시급한 실정이다. The detail survey on the Songsanri tomb site including the Muryong royal tomb was carried out during the period from May 1, 1996 to April 30, 1997. A quantitative analysis was tried to find changes of tomb itself since the excavation. Main subjects of the survey are to find out the cause of infiltration of rain water and groundwater into the tomb and the tomb site, monitoring of the movement of tomb structure and safety, removal method of the algae inside the tomb, and air controlling system to solve high humidity condition and dew inside the tomb. We found that break rate of bricks inside the Murong royal tomb and the 6th tomb had been increased about 250 % and 290 % for just last 24 years from 1972 to 1996, respectively. The situation in 1996 is the result for just 24 years while the situation in 1972 was the result for about 1450 years. Status of breaking of bricks represents that a severe problem is undergoing. The wall movement of tombs is detecting in disadvantageous directions, especially in rainy season. The front wall of the Muryong royal tomb shows the biggest movement having a rate of 2.05 mm/myr toward the passage way. Georadar section of the shallow soil layer represents several faults in the artificial water-protection layer within soil layer. Rainwater flew through faults into the tomb and nearby ground and high water content in nearby ground resulted in low resistance and high humidity inside tombs. High humidity inside tomb made good living condition for algae with high temperature and moderate light source. Artificial change of the tomb environment since the excavation, infiltration of rain water and groundwater into the tombsite and bad drainage system had resulted in dangerous status for the tomb structure. Main cause for many problems including breaking of bricks, movement of tomb walls and algae living is infiltration of rainwater and groundwater into the tomb site. Therefore, protection of the tomb site from high water content should be carried out at fust. Waterproofing method includes a cover system over the tomsite using geotextile, clay layer and geomembrane. Decrease and balancing of soil weight above the tomb are also needed for the safety of tomb structures. Above mentioned preservation methods are suggested to give least changes to tomb site and to solve the most fundmental problems. Repairing should be planned in order and some special cares are needed for the safety of tombs in repairing work. Finally, a monitoring system measuring tilting of tomb walls, water content, groundwater level, temperature and humidity is required to monitor and to evaluate the repairing work.

      • 산전 초음파로 진단된 선천성 수신증 태아의 경험 1례

        Prenatal ultarsound represents an accurate and reliable method for the detection of intrauterine anomalies, especially urinary tract anomalies. Hydronephrosis is the most common congenital condition detected by prenatal ultrasound. Prenatal ultrasonographic diagnosis allows a good condition and therapeutic assessment of the patients prior to serious impairment of renal function so that in most cases the urological surgeon can opt for a parenchymal conserving procedure. The authors have experienced a case of congenital ureteropelvic obstruction with hydronephrosis diagnosed at 32 weeks of pregnancy and report our experience with a brief review of literature.

      • 심한 골병변으로 발현된 기능성 낭종성 부갑상선 선종

        낭종성 부갑상선 선종과 심한 골병변을 동반한 부갑상선 기능항진증은 매우 드문 질환으로서, 저자들은 양측 고관절의 통증을 초기 주소로 내원한 환자에서 고칼슘혈증과 부갑상선 호르몬 증가, 골병변의 방사선적 소견을 통해 부갑상선 기능항진증을 진단하고, 경부 초음파와 컴퓨터 단층 촬영, 부갑상선 스캔검사 및 수술중 부갑상선 낭종액 검사 등을 통해 기능성 부갑상선 낭종의 한 종류인 낭종성 부갑상선 선종을 진단하고 수술적 제거를 통하여 정상화된 1예를 경험하였다. A cystic parathyroid adenoma is rare. A case of primary hyperparathyroidism, with the cystic formation of a parathyroid adenoma and a severe bony lesion, is reported. A 52-year-old male was admitted due to pain in both hips and for evaluation of hypercalcemia. The plasma level of the intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) was elevated to 1424 pg/mL. Ultrasonography and the computed tomography revealed a parathyroid cyst on the left thyroid lower pole. Parathyroid scintigraphy detected a parathyroid adenoma. A radiograph showed a subperiosteal bone resorption on the phalanges, and a brown tumor (osteitis fibrosa cystica) on the femur shaft was noted. A surgical excision of the parathyroid adenoma was performed. The PTH level in the cystic fluid was increased. A histological examination confirmed a cystic parathyroid adenoma. The PTH level was normalized after the operation (J Kor SOC Endocrinol 18:214-220, 2003).

      • Evidence for the Association of Ce11u1ar Iron Loss in Nitric Oxide-induced Apoptosis of HL-60 Cells: Involvement of p38 Kinase, c-Jun N-terminal Kinase, Cytochrome C Release, and Caspases Pathways

        Nitric oxide has high affinity for iron, and thus it can cause intracellular iron loss. We tested the idea that intracellular iron can be the primary target of NO toxicity by comparing the signaling mechanisms involved in cell death caused by iron depletion and that caused by NO. Treatment of HL-60 cells with a NO donor, S-nitroso-N-acetyl-DL-penicillamine (SNAP), decreased the intracellular iron level rapidly as that observed with the iron chelator deferoxamine (DFO). Iron chelators such as DFO and mimosine could induce death of human leukemic HL-60 cells by a mechanism requiring activation of p38 kinase, c-Jun N-terminal kinase, caspase-3 and caspase-8. DFO and SNAP also caused release of cytochrome c from mitochondria. Inhibition of p38 kinase by a selective inhibitor, SB203580, abolished the NO and DFO-induced cell death, release of cytochrome c, and activation of caspase-3 and caspase-8, thus indicating that p38 kinase lies upstream in the cell death processes. In a parallel situation, the cells that are sensitive to NO showed similar sensitivity to DFO. Moreover, simultaneous addition of ferric citrate, an iron-containing compound, inhibited the SNAP and DFO-induced activation of caspases and also blocked the NO-mediated cell cycle arrest at $G_1$ phase. Collectively, our data implicate that the NO-induced cell death of tumor cells including HL-60 cells is mediated by depletion of iron and further suggest that activation of p38 kinase lies upstream of cytochrome c release and caspase activation involved in this apoptotic process.

        The Function of Dimeric Structure of Soluble Intercellular Adhesion Molecule-1 (sICAM-1): Inhibition of Leukocyte Function Associated Antigen-1 (LFA-1) Binding to ICAM-3

        Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1) is a membrane protein, exists as a dimer on the cell surface, and interacts with leukocyte function associated antigen-1 (LFA-1), a member of ${\beta}_2$-integrin family. A soluble circulating form of ICAM-1 (sICAM-1) is also detected in human serum, and has been implicated as a regulator for LFA-1-dependent cell-cell interaction in vivo. However, previous reports demonstrated that sICAM-1 shows little inhibitory effect on LFA-1 binding to ICAM-1, indicating that sICAM-1 is unlikely to antagonize LFA-1/ICAM-1-mediated cellular events in vivo. Here, we investigated the property of the dimeric sICAM-1 as an inhibitor of LFA-1 interaction with ICAM-3, since the lower avidity of LFA-1 for ICAM-3 compared with ICAM-1 or ICAM-2 had been speculated. Using recently constructed heterodimeric sICAM-1 joined at the C terminus via an ${\alpha}$-helical coiled coil (ACID-BASE) (Jun, CD. et al., 2001, Proc Natl Acad Sci 98, 6830-6835), we also tested whether the structural integrity in dimer could affect the inhibitory action of sICAM-1. Engineered sICAM-1 dimer that contained intact ectodomain (E34/E34) significantly blocked SKW3 cell (LFA-$1^+$) binding to ICAM-3, but not to ICAM-1 and ICAM-2, indicating the lower avidity of LFA-1 to ICAM-3 than that of both ICAM-1 and ICAM-2. A one binding site knock out mutant (E34/K34) showed ${\sim}2$-fold reduction in efficiency compared with E34/E34 to inhibit cell binding. Interestingly, a one binding domain deletion mutant (E34/${\Delta}D1$-D2) showed significant reduction (${\sim}5$-fold) compare with E34/K34, suggesting that structural integrity, which is precluded in E34/${\Delta}D1$-D2, is necessary for optimal binding of dimeric sICAM-1 to LFA-1, thereby inhibiting LFA-1/ICAM-3-dependent adhesion. Furthermore, BIAcore affinity measurements revealed that E34/${\Delta}D1$-D2 bound to immobilized soluble open LFA-1 I domain with an ${\sim}3$-fold reduced affinity compared with E34/K34. Overall, our results demonstrate that maintaining the structural integrity in dimer is necessary for optimal binding of sICAM-1 to LFA-1, and further suggest the therapeutic potential of dimeric sICAM-1 to antagonize LFA-1/ICAM-3-mediated cellular events in vivo.
