Chondrosarcoma is a cartilaginous tumor of mesenchymal origin. The histology and grade of the tumor determine the chances of relapse and survival. These tumors usually respond poorly to chemo-radiotherapy in cases of non-resectable and recurrent disease. 18F-FDG PET/CT has been used in evaluation of recurrence. However, these tumors show only mild to moderate FDG avidity due to their lower mitotic activity and large acellular matrix. These tumors are known to have a high degree of angiogenesis, especially in those of higher grade. We present a case of a 53-year-old man with grade II chondrosarcoma of the left femur showing only mild avidity on 18F-FDG PET/CT but showing moderate to intense tracer avidity on 68Ga-DOTA-RGD2 PET/CT. This may enable the use of angiogenesis-targeted positron and beta-emitting radiopharmaceuticals as a potentially new theranostic alternative treatment in cases of refractory metastatic chondrosarcoma.

This article reports our investigation on H2 generation from visible light (λ>=420nm) photodecomposition of H2S by nanomaterial catalysts, α-Fe2O3 and its chemically modified Fe2-xGaxO3 (Ga substitution at x=0.6, FeGaO3-I and x=1.0, FeGaO3-II). Simple template-free hydrothermal technique was employed to synthesize the three photocatalysts. XRD study reveals rhombohedral nanocrystalline structure and FESEM shows nanospheres morphology for Fe2O3 and nanosticks/nanorods for both FeGaO3-I, and FeGaO3-II. In H2 generation, Fe2O3 and FeGaO3-II perform moderate and almost same activities in the fresh and used conditions (quantum yield, QY=6.0-6.8% at 550nm). Contrarily, fresh FeGaO3-I exhibits a greater activity (11.2% QY) and the activity is further enhanced (QY=15.3%) on regeneration and reuse. The intricacy, as resolved by XRD and FESEM, appears to take place through morphology transformation. The present work, thus, successfully demonstrates H2 generation from H2S by nanostructured photocatalysts involving morphology dependent activity enhancement.

<P>Present study aim to evaluate the antimicrobial, antioxidant and cytotoxic potential of crude extract of Marine Streptomyces carpaticus MK-01 isolated from seawater collected from Daejeong-cost of Jeju Island. About 24 actinomycetes strains were isolated and subjected to morphological and molecular analysis that confirmed the isolate as S. carpaticus MK-01. Crude ethyl acetate extract of MK-01 strain showed extensive antibacterial activity against Gram-positive fish pathogenic bacteria namely Streptococcus iniae and S. parauberis with a maximum zone of inhibition (0.92 +/- 0.03mm) was recorded against S. parauberis at the minimum extract concentration (3.12 mu g/ml). The MK-01 ethyl acetate extract shows dose dependant significant increase in antioxidant activity. The 50% cytotoxic concentration (CC50) of MK-01 ethyl acetate extract was attained at 53.71 mu g/ml and the effective concentration 50 (EC50) against virus-infected Epithelioma papulosum cyprini cell lines was 8.72 mu g/ml of S. carpaticus MK-01 crude ethyl acetate extract.</P>
Ferulic Acid Inhibits 7,12-Dimethylbenz[α]anthracene-Induced Hamster Buccal Pouch Carcinogenesis
Subramanian Balakrishnan,Venugopal P. Menon,Shanmugam Manoharan 한국식품영양과학회 2008 Journal of medicinal food Vol.11 No.4
The aim of this study was to assess the chemopreventive efficacy of ferulic acid in 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis. We induced oral squamous cell carcinoma in the buccal pouch of male Syrian golden hamsters by painting with 0.5% DMBA in liquid paraffin three times a week for 14 weeks. The tumor incidence, tumor volume, and tumor burden that were formed in the hamster buccal pouch were determined. The activities of carcinogen detoxification agents and status of lipid peroxidation and antioxidants were also estimated by specific colorimetric methods. We observed 100% tumor formation in DMBA-painted animals. The status of carcinogen-detoxifying agents, lipid peroxidation, and antioxidants was significantly disrupted in DMBA-painted animals. Oral administration of ferulic acid at a dose of 40 mg/kg of body weight to DMBA-painted animals on days alternate to DMBA painting for 14 weeks significantly prevented the tumor incidence, tumor volume, and tumor burden. Ferulic acid exhibited potent anti-lipid peroxidative effects as well as the ability to modulate the status of carcinogen-detoxifying agents and antioxidants in DMBA-painted animals. Our results demonstrate that ferulic acid has potent chemopreventive and antioxidant functions in DMBA-induced hamster buccal pouch carcinogenesis.

3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3-HP), a versatile and valuable platform chemical, has diverse industrial applications; but its biological production from glycerol is often limited by the capability of the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) to convert an intermediary compound, 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde (3-HPA), to 3-HP. In this study, we report a new ALDH, PuuC, from Klebsiella pneumoniae DSM 2026, that efficiently converts 3-HPA to 3-HP. The identified gene puuC was cloned, expressed in Escherichia coli, purified, and characterized for its properties. The recombinant enzyme with a molecular weight of 53.8 kDa exhibited broad substrate specificity for various aliphatic aldehydes, especially C2-C5 aldehydes. NAD+ was the preferred coenzyme for the oxidation of most aliphatic and aromatic aldehydes tested. The optimum pH and temperature for PuuC activity were pH 8.0 and 45oC. The Km values for 3-HPA and NAD+ were 0.48 and 0.09 mM, respectively. The activity of PuuC was enhanced in the presence of reducing agents such as 2-mercaptoethanol or dithiothreitol, while several metal ions, particularly Hg2+, Ag+, and Cu2+ inhibited its activity. The predicted structure of PuuC indicated the presence of K191 and E194 in close proximity to the glycine motif, suggesting that PuuC belongs to class 2 ALDHs.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In the past few years, green synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of predominantly used materials in therapeutics and clinical practices. In this study, AgNPs were synthesized from aqueous extract of <I>Oldenlandia umbellata</I> and investigated their pharmaceutical properties. UV–vis spectroscopy of <I>O. umbellata</I> mediated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs@OUa) showed a peak at 423 nm. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and phytochemical screening explained the contribution of biomolecules in AgNPs@OUa synthesis. Field emission scanning electron microscope and high-resolution transmission electron microscope examination revealed that small monodispersed spherical nanoparticles had an average size of 22.7 nm. Antioxidant assays were used to examine antioxidant properties of AgNPs@OUa in comparison with <SMALL>L-</SMALL>ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) as a standard antioxidant. AgNPs@OUa showed dose-dependent antioxidant activities. Antibacterial activities of AgNPs@OUa exhibited the highest zone of inhibition against <I>Streptococcus mutans</I> and <I>Escherichia coli</I> were 16.03 ± 0.35 mm and 19.76 ± 0.25 mm, respectively, at concentration of 1.0 mg L−1. Biocompatibility of AgNPs@OUa against human lung fibroblast (WI-38) cell line was also tested. Even though, the cells treated with the uppermost concentration (100 μg/mL) of AgNPs@OUa, it enhances the cell viability (∼90%), suggesting that AgNPs@OUa had no toxicity with excellent biocompatibility.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> First report on the bio synthesis of AgNPs using <I>O. umbellata</I> aqueous extract. </LI> <LI> The AgNPs@OUa were characterized by spectral and microscopy analysis. </LI> <LI> AgNPs@OUa were act as a significant antioxidant and antibacterial activities. </LI> <LI> AgNPs@OUa showed excellent biocompatibility against WI-38 cell lines. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

<P>We report the synthesis and characterization of Nd doped ZnO thin films grown on Si (1 0 0) substrates by the spray pyrolysis method. The surface morphology of these thin films was investigated by scanning electron microscopy and shows the presence of randomly distributed structures of nanorods. Grazing angle x-ray diffraction studies confirm that the doped Nd ions occupied Zn sites and these samples exhibited a wurtzite hexagonal-like crystal structure similar to that of the parent compound, ZnO. The micro-photoluminescence measurement shows a decrease in the near band edge position with Nd doping in the ZnO matrix due to the impurity levels. The near-edge x-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) measurements at the O K edge clearly exhibit a pre-edge spectral feature which evolves with Nd doping, suggesting incorporation of more charge carriers in the ZnO system and the presence of strong hybridization between O 2p–Nd 5d orbitals. The Nd M5 edge NEXAFS spectra reveal that the Nd ions are in the trivalent state.</P>
