Potassium cocoyl glycinate (PCG) as a green surfactant was used to evaluate the possibility to substitute petrochemical surfactants for productivity improvement of enzymatic hydrolysis. Yellow poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera L. ) was subjected to NaOH (0.1%, 1.0% and 10.0%) pretreatment at 121°C for 60 min. Pretreated substrate (5.0% w/v) was hydrolyzed by enzyme under the variety PCG concentrations up to 0.3%. The optimum dose of PCG was around 0.03% at which it resulted in the highest total sugar production for all pretreatment conditions. The total sugar production of pretreated yellow poplar with 0.1%, 1.0% and 10.0% of NaOH increased from 2.3, 20.1, 20.8 g/L to 7.7, 25.7, 31.8 g/L under 0.03% of PCG concentration at 72 h hydrolysis. The effect of PCG to improve enzymatic hydrolysis was significantly promising as compared to other researches applying surfactants for hydrolysis. In conclusion, application of PCG was a promising alternative to replace petrochemical surfactants in enzymatic hydrolysis processes due to the high sugar production and positive influence on the ecosystem.

Objective: Chronic subdural hematoma (CSDH) is a neurological complication following clipping surgery. However, the natural course and ideal approach for the treatment of clipping-related-CSDH (CR-CSDH) have not been clearly established. We aimed to investigate the course of CR-CSDH using chronological radiological findings. Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 28 (3.8%) patients who developed CSDH among 736 patients who underwent surgical clipping using pterional approach for unruptured aneurysms at our institution between December 2010 and December 2018. Patients underwent follow-up CT scan 6–8 weeks after clipping surgery and decision to pursue surgical intervention rests upon the patient’s symptom based on the Markwalder’s grading scale (MGS) and numeric rating scale (NRS).Results: Of the 28 patients, 3 patients (10.7%) underwent surgery, while 25 (89.2%) showed spontaneous resolution of CR-CSDH. Eighteen patients (64.2%) had mild headache with MGS of 0–1. The mean maximum hematoma volume was 41.9±30.9 ml (5.8–135 ml), and 26 patients (92.8%) had homogeneous hematoma. The mean time to hematoma resolution was 126.7±52.9 days (46–228 days). Comparing group of CR-CSDH volume ≥43 ml or a midline shift ≥5 mm, the difference in presence of linear low-density area (p=0.002) and age (p=0.026) between the conservative and operative groups were found to be statistically significant. Conclusions: Most CR-CSDH cases spontaneously resolved within 4 months. Therefore, we suggest that close observation should be performed if patient’s symptoms are mild and special radiologic findings are present, despite its relatively large volume and midline shifting.

Objectives:Depression and stress-related response is common symptoms in mental health outpatients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences of change in heart rate variability parameters between patients with depressive disorder and those with trauma and stressor related disorders. Methods:We conducted a retrospective chart review of outpatients from 2014 to 2020 in Anxiety and Stress Outpatients Clinic of National Center for Mental Health. A total of 381 patients with depressive disorder and trauma and stressor related disorders were selected as dataset. Each parameter of 5-min analysis of Heart Rate Variability from the first and second visit was analyzed according to diagnosis. Results:At the first visit, root mean square of the differences of successive normal to normal intervals indicators showed significant differences between depressive disorder, and trauma and stressor related disorders. The change of Heart Rate Variability indicators for each group showed the following results: Significant differences between the first and second visit were found in standard deviation of normal to normal intervals, root mean square of the differences of successive normal to normal intervals, and low frequency among patients with the depressive disorder. Patients with trauma and stressor related disorders showed significant differences in root mean square of the differences of successive normal to normal intervals, high frequency between each visit. Conclusions:Our results suggest the changes in Heart Rate Variability parameters between first visit and second visit in both depressive disorders and trauma and stressor related disorders. However, further research should examine factors that influence the differential changes of Heart Rate Variability parameters.

Theranostic systems are receiving ever-increasing attention due to their potential therapeutic utility, imaging enhancement capability, and promise for advancing the field of personalized medicine, particularly as it relates to the diagnosis, staging, and treatment of cancer. In this Tutorial Review, we provide an introduction to the concepts of theranostic drug delivery effected via use of conjugates that are able to target cancer cells selectively, provide cytotoxic chemotherapeutics, and produce readily monitored imaging signals in vitro and in vivo. The underlying design concepts, requiring the synthesis of conjugates composed of imaging reporters, masked chemotherapeutic drugs, cleavable linkers, and cancer targeting ligands, are discussed. Particular emphasis is placed on highlighting the potential benefits of fluorogenic reaction-based targeted systems that are activated for both imaging and therapy by cellular entities, e.g., thiols, reactive oxygen species and enzymes, which are present at relatively elevated levels in tumour environments, physiological characteristics of cancer, e.g., hypoxia and acidic pH. Also discussed are systems activated by an external stimulus, such as light. The work summarized in this Tutorial Review will help define the role fluorogenic reaction-based, cancer-targeting theranostics may have in advancing drug discovery efforts, as well as improving our understanding of cellular uptake and drug release mechanisms.

Objectives:Dysregulation of the central noradrenergic system may be involved in the pathophysiology of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The aim of this study was to examine the differences in pre- and post-treatment cerebral perfusion according to the MspI polymorphisms of the alpha-2A-adrenergic receptor gene (ADRA2A) in children with ADHD. Methods:Thirty seven drug-naive ADHD children (8.9+1.8 years old, M=32, F=5) were genotyped. Baseline single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) and clinical assessments were performed for ADHD children. After treatment with methylphenidate for eight weeks, SPECT and clinical assessment were repeated. Results:No differences in baseline clinical assessments or cerebral perfusion were observed according to the MspI genotype. However, after treatment, ADHD children with the G/G genotype at the MspI polymorphism showed hyperperfusion in the right cerebellar declive (p=.001, uncorrected) and hypoperfusion in the left lentiform nucleus and left cingulate gyrus (p<.001 and p=.001, uncorrected), compared to children without the G/G genotype. Conclusion:Although the results of this study should be interpreted cautiously, they suggest a possible role of the MspI polymorphisms of the ADRA2A gene in methylphenidate-induced changes in cerebral perfusion.
