Objectives : Pneumoconisis and noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) have been reported as main occupational diseases by the Special Health Examination. The Industrial Accident Compensation Insurance has reported various work-related diseases, however, these two diseases occupied almost a half of compensated cases. Therefore, it was not well known about the status of occupational diseases other than pneumoconiosis, NIHL, and cardio-cerebrovascular accident (CVA). This study was conducted to analyze claimed cases as an occupational disease, that was requested to the Korea Industrial Safety and Health Agency (KOSHA). Methods : The local office of the Korea Labor Welfare Corporation (KLWC) has asked the KOSHA for confirmation of claimed cases as an occupational disease. We analyzed 379 cases requested from KLWC, the Ministry of Labor, employers, unions and occupational health agencies from 1992 to 1999. Results : Male was 80.7 % of the requested cases. Their mean age was 42 years old and 75.5 % of them were more than 35 years old. The requested cases were increased rapidly from 25 cases in 1992 to 108 cases in 1999 and the accept rate was 50.7 %. The majority of requested cases were respiratory diseases(22.4%), cancers(18.5%), Neuropsychiatric problems(14.5%), and musculoskeletal problems(13.5%). The accept rate was high in reproductive, respiratory, musculoskeletal and digestive disorders and low in neuropsychiatric, renal and otologic problems and occupational cancers. 73.6% of them were caused by chemical agents, especially 28.5 % were by organic solvents. 67% of them were clinically confirmed at university hospitals. A half of the cases were from KyongIn area, even the request came from the whole country. Conclusions : A claim was common in workers whose age was over 35 years old and exposure history was over 10 years. The respiratory diseases and neuropsychiatric disorders were still main problems in occupational health and occupational cancers was increasing even though its accept rate was not high yet.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The Ho<SUP>3+</SUP>-activated NaYbF<SUB>4</SUB> upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) were synthesized <I>via</I> a facile hydrothermal method and characterized by X-ray diffraction pattern, transmission electron microscope image and upconversion (UC) emission spectrum. Upon the excitation of 980nm light, the as-prepared UCNPs exhibited bright green and red UC emissions corresponding to the (<SUP>5</SUP>F<SUB>4</SUB>,<SUP>5</SUP>S<SUB>2</SUB>) → <SUP>5</SUP>I<SUB>8</SUB> and <SUP>5</SUP>F<SUB>5</SUB> → <SUP>5</SUP>I<SUB>8</SUB> transitions of Ho<SUP>3+</SUP> ions, respectively. The cell toxicity test result revealed that the synthesized UCNPs possessed remarkable low cytotoxicity. With the introduction of the resultant UCNPs into the HeLa cells, intense green and red UC emissions were observed, indicating that the HeLa cells can be labeled by the obtained UCNPs and they had potential application in live cell imaging. Additionally, the practicality of the resultant UCNPs for latent fingerprint was also systematically investigated. The purpose of this study was carried out an epidemiological survey on the prevalence rate of the canine heartworms in Seoul City and the districts of Pa-Ju, Seong-Nam and Po-Chon in Kyonggi province of Korea from September 1994 to the end of September 1995. The blood samples from 292 male and 193 female dogs (pet, 363 ; fighting dogs, 60 ; working dogs, 62) were examined for the adult heartworms cuticle antibodies using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELSA) kits. The test was designed to detect the antibodies of the host against the specific cuticle antigens produced with the adult heartworms.

In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.
현행 중학교 과학 실험·실습교육에 대한 교사들의 견해와 개선방안

The status of facilities, management of the experiment, practices, and Science education teaching method in middle school have been investigated. The present status and reasonable management of middle school science education have been grasped from the questionaires. The results are as follows : The reasonable management for expeiments and practices of science education were scanty in the middle school around the urban and rural schools owing to the shortage of facilities and equipments, crowded class, excessive classes, work for teachers, excessive contents of present textbook and insufficience of administrative support etc. The current teaching method of middle school science has emphasized knowledge. This fact does not satisfy the objective of learning due to lack of teaching method. Desirable directions for the improvement of present status of middle school science education were proposed in this paper.

The purpose of this study is to investigate the status of the experimental and practical education in high school earth. The present status and reasonable management of the experimental and practical education in high school earth science have been grasped from the questionaires. To do this, eighty eight earth science teachers in Korea are administered questionaires. The frequency of the experimental and practical items in the seven kind of earth science text books were investigated. The problems and the reasonable management for experimental and practical education were proposed in this paper.

To investigate the liver dysfunction among workers exposed to dimethylformamide, 24 workers were examined on the liver transaminases and the urine metabolite. The results were as follows: 1. Nine of 24 workers examined had abnormal values in serum aspartate aminotransferase(AST), 5 in serum alanine aminotransferase (ALT), 1 in Υ-glutamyl transferase(Υ-GT). The possibilties of hepatitis due to other causes were excluded by the viral serologic tests and other results. 2. The urinary excretion values of N-methylformamide(NMF), metabolite of dimethylformamide(DMF) were over biological exposure index(BEI) in 4 of 24 workers. 3. The air concentration of dimethylformamide was over threshold limit values(TLV-TWA) in 1 of 5 workers sampled by personal air sampler. 4. The correlation coefficients between age, working part and the values of liver transaminases were not statistically significant.

88 workers exposed to cadmium were examined at the 12 factories using or producing cadmium in order to know the present state of cadmium exposure and renal dysfunction in 1992. Cadmium in blood and in urine were measured and compared by the 3 exposure level of cadmium in air. Cadmium in blood of low, moderate and high exposure group were 2.5, 3.8 and 7.6 ㎍/L, respectively. Cadmium in urine were 1.8(1.3), 3.8(2.6) and 7.9 ㎍/L(6.1 ㎍/g creatinine), respectively. However, there was no relationship between urinary cadmium and β₂-microglobulin. Cumulative exposure estimate(CEE) was calculated by multiplying the mean ambient cadmium level of the factory and working duration. CEE has a high correlation with cadmium in blood and urine, but no relation to β₂-microglobulin. Because working durations were relatively shorter than European workers', the highest CEE was just 300 ㎍·year/m³, which was not enough to induce renal tubular dysfunction. This study, however, suggested the possibility that renal tubular dysfunction caused by cadmium could be happened in Korea in the near future.
光活性 a-Amino Alcohol의 Racemization Mechanism에 관한 硏究〔第1報〕

光活性 α-amino alcohol로서 L-2-amino-1-butanol을 sample로 하여 그 racemization을 연구하기 위하여 수소첨가용 촉매인 Raney Ni, Co 및 Co-Fe_2O_3혼합물을 각각 사용하여 auto-clave 속에서 NH_3와 수소의 加壓下에 200˚C에서 5~9시간 반응시켜 optical rotation을 변화시켰다. 이때 Raney Ni, Co 및 Co-Fe_2O_3혼합물을 각각 촉매로 하였을 때 모두 부분적인 racemization이 일어났으며, Raney Ni과 Co를 촉매로 하였을 때는 각각 결정성 부산물이 혼입되었다. 또한 Co-Fe_2O_3의 혼합물을 촉매로 하였을 때는 Fe_2O_3의 合量이 10%이하일 때는 Raney Ni과 Co의 촉매때와 같이 결정성 부산물이 생성되었으며, 10% 以上이면 부분적인 racemization이 일어났으며, 동시에 副産物이 생기지 않았다. In order to change the optical rotation of L-2-amino-1-butanol it was treated with hydroge-nation catalyst; such as, Raney Ni, Co, and Co-Fe_2O_3 mixture under the pressure of H_2 and NH_3 gas. The results were as following: 1. The optical rotation of L-2-amino-1-butanol was partially changed by Raney Ni, Co, and Co-Fe_2O_3 mixed catalyst, respectively. When Ni or Co was used, the crystalline by-product was produced. 2. We also obtained the crystalline by-product by using the Co-Fe_2O_3 mixed catalyst which has less than 10% of Fe_2O_3.
