        New molecular record and some biochemical features of the rare plant species of Iranian lily (Lilium ledebourii Boiss.)

        The antioxidative potential and some phytochemicals of Lilium ledebourii Boiss. were biochemically analyzed using assays of extracts from the bulb, shoot and fl ower. In addition, the plant’s biosystematics was molecularly characterized using a phylogenetic tree. L. ledebourii plants were collected from their natural habitat. Biochemical assays showed a higher total phenolic and total fl avonoid content in the leaf than in the bulb (by 264.9% and 27.38%, respectively) and fl ower (by 331.18% and 47.85%, respectively). The fl ower had the highest total anthocyanin of all the organs. The DPPH-based antioxidant activity assay showed the highest activity level in the bulb, whereas FRAP- and BCLS-based assays revealed higher antioxidant activity in the leaf than in the bulb (by 7.1 and 3 folds, respectively) and fl ower (by 4.9 and 1.5 folds, respectively). Our results showed that phenolic and fl avonoid compositions were positively associated with antioxidative potential as assayed by FRAP and BCLS methods. The 5.8S ribosomal DNA sequence was extracted by PCR from genomic DNA and sequenced. Our molecular study resulted in a sequencing record of L. ledebourii var. Kelardasht Salehi 1 in Genbank with the accession number KX495217.1. We conclude that the antioxidant potential of L. ledebourii is strongly dependent on the organ and assay method.

        A frequency response based structural damage localization method using independent component analysis

        Vibration-based structural damage detection has been the focus of attention by many researchers over the last few decades. However, most methods proposed for this purpose utilize extracted modal parameters or some indices constructed on the basis these parameters. Our literature review revealed that few papers have employed frequency response functions (FRFs) for detecting structural damage. In this paper, a technique is presented for damage detection which is based on measured FRFs. Independent component analysis (ICA) has been implemented on the spatiotemporal responses in each frequency in order to reduce the dimension of the data. This is based on the concept that the forced harmonic response of a linear vibrating system can be fully captured utilizing a single ICA mode. A different approach is also presented in which ICA is applied to the frequency domain data. Operational deflection shapes (ODSs) have been decomposed using ICA to localize the damage. The efficiency of both methods is demonstrated through some numerical and experimental case studies.

        Influence of sintering temperature on microstructural changes of ceramic Raschig ring

        The thermal behavior of Illitic-kaolinitic clay for manufacturing of low porosity ceramic Raschig rings was characterized during the sintering process. The samples were shaped by extrusion method and fired at different temperatures from 1,100 to 1,300℃. The main physical-chemical transformations were studied by evaluating changes in shrinkage, water absorption, porosity, mechanical strength, microstructure and mineralogical compositions. The optimum sintering condition was found to obtain maximum mechanical strength. Chemical resistance of ceramic Raschig rings also was determined according standard method. It was shown that the better chemical resistance could be attributed to the different mineralogical compositions, in particular with presence of mullite phase.

      • Disorders of Gastrointestinal Motility & Sensation : Subjective Lactose Intolerance In Apparently Healthy Adults In Southern Iran: Is It Related To IBS?

        Background/Alms: Lactase deficiency leads to maldigestion and malabsorption of lactose. The symptoms of this deficiency in some individuals are abdominal pain and distension, flatulence, and the passage of loose watery stools. This study aimed to investigate the prevalence of subjective lactose intolerance and its relation to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), demographic factors and living habits. Methods: A survey of 1978 individuals aged above 35 years was conducted in Shiraz, Southern Iran, using a questionnaire that consisted of items regarding demographic data, life style and gastrointestinal symptoms including those experienced after consumption of dairy products. Diagnosis of IBS was made on the basis of Rome II criteria. Results: A total of 562 subjects reported lactose intolerance (28.41%). The prevalence was significantly higher in females, in subjects taking NSAIDs or acetaminophen, and in patients with irritable bowel syndrome. Subjective lactose intolerance was also associated with health-seeking behavior such as restricting diet, using herbal medicine, taking over-the-counter drugs and visiting a physician. On the other hand, no relation was found between lactose intolerance and age, smoking or the number of meals per day. Conclusions: Lactose intolerance has a relatively high prevalence in our region and is associated with irritable bowel syndrome. A test for lactose malabsorption should, therefore, be included in the work-up of patients with this syndrome.

        FPGA Based Robust Open Transistor Fault Diagnosis and Fault Tolerant Sliding Mode Control of Five-Phase PM Motor Drives

        The voltage-source inverters (VSI) supplying a motor drive are prone to open transistor faults. To address this issue in faulttolerant drives applicable to electric vehicles, a new open transistor fault diagnosis (FD) method is presented in this paper. According to the proposed method, in order to define the FD index, the phase angle of the converter output current is estimated by a simple trigonometric function. The proposed FD method is adaptable, simple, capable of detecting multiple open switch faults and robust to load operational variations. Keeping the FD in mind as a mandatory part of the fault tolerant control algorithm, the FD block is applied to a five-phase converter supplying a multiphase fault-tolerant PM motor drive with nonsinusoidal unbalanced current waveforms. To investigate the performance of the FD technique, the fault-tolerant sliding mode control (SMC) of a five-phase brushless direct current (BLDC) motor is developed in this paper with the embedded FD block. Once the theory is explained, experimental waveforms are obtained from a five-phase BLDC motor to show the effectiveness of the proposed FD method. The FD algorithm is implemented on a field programmable gate array (FPGA).

        X-ray diffraction measurement of residual stress in sol-gel grown lead zirconate titanate thick films on nickel-based super alloy substrate

        Residual compressive stress of Pb(Zr0.52Ti0.48)O3 thick films was investigated using residual strains derived from X-ray diffraction patterns. Sin2ψ method was applied for the 5, 10 and 15 μm sol-gel derived thick films annealed at 700°C for 1 hr as high frequency structuralhealth monitoring square-shape transducers of 10×10 mm, deposited onto the curved nickel-based super alloy substrates. A triaxialmodel was proposed based on piezoelectric constitutive equations, and Bragg’s law at a large diffraction angle (~89º) was utilized consideringthe electromechanical coupling factor as well as elastic, dielectric and piezoelectric constants. Thickness variations led to a significantchange in residual stress magnitudes delineated from more-accurate triaxial model compared to small angle plane-stress resultsnot considering the piezoelectric coupling effects.

        The effects of Commiphora mukul extract on spermatogenesis and testosterone levels in male diabetic rats

        Objective: The strong antioxidant activity of Commiphora mukul prompted us to conduct the present study to explore whether treatment with C. mukul extract (CME) would have any protective influence on sperm parameters, testosterone levels, and plasma glucose levels in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats. Methods: Male Wistar rats were randomly divided into four groups: control, control animals treated with CME, diabetic animals, and diabetic animals treated with CME. CME extract (300 mg/kg) was administered for 60 days by daily gavage. Diabetes was induced by an intraperitoneal injection of 50 mg/kg STZ. The epididymal sperm count, weight, motility, morphology, viability, and serum testosterone and glucose levels were determined. Results: In the diabetic animals, CME decreased blood glucose levels (p< 0.05), increased the total sperm count (p< 0.05), and decreased the proportion of sperm with abnormal morphology (p< 0.05). Diabetes reduced sperm motility (p< 0.001), and CME supplementation partially reversed this effect of diabetes (p= 0.003). Furthermore, in diabetic animals, CME decreased the proportion of immotile sperm (p< 0.001). In rats, diabetes caused a significant decrease (p< 0.05) in serum testosterone levels (F[3, 28] = 3.283, p= 0.035), but treatment of diabetic animals with CME increased serum testosterone levels. Conclusion: The present study demonstrated that C. mukul possesses proandrogenic activity and exerts a beneficial effect on sperm parameters in diabetic rats.

        Promotion of excisional wound repair by a menstrual blood-derived stem cell-seeded decellularized human amniotic membrane

        This is the first study demonstrating the efficacy of menstrual blood-derived stem cell (MenSC) transplantation viadecellularized human amniotic membrane (DAM), for the promotion of skin excisional wound repair. The DAM wasseeded with MenSCs at the density of 3 9 104 cells/cm2 and implanted onto a rat’s 1.50 9 1.50 cm2 full-thicknessexcisional wound defect. The results of wound closure and histopathological examinations demonstrated that the MenSCseededDAM could significantly improve the wound healing compared with DAM-treatment. All in all, our data indicatedthat the MenSCs can be a potential source for cell-based therapies to regenerate skin injuries.

      • Thickness and thermal processing contribution on piezoelectric characteristics of Pb(Zr-Ti)O<sub>3</sub> thick films deposited on curved IN738 using sol–gel technique

        <P>Lead zirconate-titanate (PZT) thick films of perovskite structure Pb(Zr<SUB>x</SUB>Ti<SUB>1-x</SUB>)O<SUB>3</SUB> were fabricated on the curved surface of IN738 nickel-based supper alloy substrate up to 15 µm thickness using sol–gel deposition technique without polyvinylpyrrolidone. The films were heated at 200 with 10 wt% excess PbO, pyrolyzed at 400, and subsequently annealed at 650, 700, and 800. Au and Pt thin films were deposited as bottom and top electrodes, respectively. PZT films of different thicknesses and thermal treatment conditions were characterized to investigate the effect of process on crystalline phase development, orientation, and microstructure morphology. Thereby, formation of fairly smooth, semi-dense, and crack-free random orientated thick films as well as an increase in the average grain size and stress relaxation was observed as the film thickness increased. Having optimized the coating process, intrinsic and extrinsic dielectric, ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties were measured as a function of the film thickness, orientation, grain size, and domain wall motions to evaluate the remnant polarization (<I>P<SUB>r</SUB></I> = 7.6–17.5 µC/cm<SUP>2</SUP>), coercive field (<I>E<SUB>c</SUB></I> = 2.5–4 kV/cm), permittivity (<I>ε<SUB>r</SUB></I> = 276–326), dielectric loss (tan<I>δ</I>(%) = 2.7–3), and piezoelectric charge coefficient (<I>d</I><SUB>33</SUB> = 71–145 pm/V) of the PZT thick films prepared potentially to be used as high bandwidth 1–5 MHz structural health monitoring transducers.</P>
