Screening panoramic radiographs in a group of patients visiting a Health Promotion Center

Purpose : To report the incidence of radiological findings from screening panoramic radiographs and verify the validity of the panoramic radiography for screening purposes. Materials and Methods : Six thousand one hundred and sixty panoramic radiographs taken from the patients visiting the Health Promotion Center of CNUH were selected for this retrospective study. Panoramic radiographs were examined into the following pathologic conditions : the presence of periodontal bone loss, dental caries, periapical radiolucencies, retained roots, impacted supernumerary teeth, impacted third molars, odontoma, cystic lesions other than radicular cyst, sialoliths, and mixed radiolucent-radiopaque lesions Number of pathologic conditions and Prevalence values were recorded. Results : The prevalences of pathologic conditions were 72.9% of periodontal bone loss, 32.2% of dental caries, 11.9% of periapical radiolucencies, 10.8% of retained roots, 0.4% of root fracture, 1.0% of impacted supernumerary teeth, 1.0% of impacted third molars, 0.06% of odontoma, 0.08% of cystic lesion other than radicular cyst, 0.2% of prolonged retention of deciduous tooth, 0.1% of sialolith, and 0.04% of mixed radiopaque and radiolucent lesion. Conclusion : Although the panoramic radiograph should not be used to replace intraoral radiographic and clinical examinations, this study showed that many dental pathologic conditions could be detected on panoramic radiographs. The panoramic radiograph might serve as a diagnostic aid in dental health evaluation programs.
제통단이 퇴행성 슬관절염 환자의 삶의 질에 미치는 영향

Objectives : to evaluate the effects of Jetongdan, the newly developed herbal medicine, on the quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of knee Methods : Placebo-controlled, randomized clinical trial on the 80 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee was fulfilled. After enrollment, they took medication as they enrolled. And they were asked to answer the questionnaires (Korean Health Assessment Questionnaire (KHAQ), Lequesne's functional index (LF1), visual analogue scale (VAS)) and analysed with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) at baseline, after 4 weeks and 8 weeks of medication. Results : Total KHAQ score, some categories of KHAQ like hygiene, activities were significantly improved after 8 weeks of medication. And the change of the KHAQ score was significantly correlated with the change of VAS. But LFI, VAS, ESR level was not significantly improved, and it was considered because of the short medication period and small size of study population. Conclusion : In conclusion, Jetongdan could improve the health-related quality of life in patients with osteoarthritis of knee. Further study in the large population, in long period were recommended.
퇴행성 슬관절염 환자의 증상 중증도 지표와 DITI의 상관성 연구

Objectives : To investigate the applicability of thermography as severity measurement in the patients with osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee. Methods : Data were obtained from 80 patiens with OA of the knee. They were asked to answer two disease-specific questionnaire (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) OA index, Lequesne's Functional Index (LFI)), one generic instrument (Korean Health Assessment Questionnaire (KHAQ)), VAS in order to assess the severity of disease, quality of life, degree of pain and taken thermography in standardized environment. Results : The thermal difference between ipsilateral side and contralaterla side of lateral aspect of knee was correlated with that of medial aspect of knee, and the thermal difference of anterior thigh was correlated with that of lateral, medial aspect of knee and patella region. Age, duration of disease, duration of morning stiffness, sex, crepitus, and painful side of knee were not correlated with the thermal differences of each region. LFI, WOMAC, WOMAC pain subscale, WOMAC stiffness subscale, WOMAC physical function, KHAQ,, VAS were not correlated with the thermal differences of each region. Conclusion : Further study on the thermography on OA of the knee in population with appropriate severity grade and the standardization of analysis of thermographic data were recommended.

내열성의 cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase (CGTase)를 이용하여 열에 안정한 싸이클린 텍스트린 (CD)을 생산하기 위하여 매우 높은 CGTase 활성을 보이는 고열성이며 호알카리성인 B-13 세균을 분리하여 형태적, 생리학적 특성과 16S 리보솜 RNA 서열분석 등을 통하여 Bacillus cereus B-13으로 동정하였다. Bacillus cereus B-13을 2% 가용성 전분, 1% 효모 추출물, 1% Na_(2)CO_(3) 등을 함유하는 SYC 배지 (pH 8.5)에 접종하여 50℃에서 24시간 배양하였을 때 최고의 CGTase 활성(130 U/ml)을 보였다. 또한 부분 정제된 CGTase의 작용 최적 온도와 pH는 각각 65℃, pH 8.5-9.0 이었고 80℃이하와 pH 5.0-10.0에서 안정하였다. 1% 가용성 전분을 부분 정제한 CGTase와 작용 시켰을 때 49%의 CD 수율을 보였다. To produce a thermostable cyclodextrin by using thermotolerant cyclomaltodextrin glucanotransferase(CGTase), a thermophilic and alkalophilic bacterium isolate, designated B-13 showing the highest CGTase activity was isolated from natural sources and identified as Bacillus cereus B-13 based on the morphological and physiological characteristics, and 16S rRNA sequence. The maximal CGTase activity (130 U/ml) was obtained when Bacillus cereus B-13 was cultured in SYC medium containing 2.0% soluble starch, 1.0% yeast extracts, 1% corn steep liquor and 1% Na_(2)CO_(3) (pH 8.5) at 50℃ for 24 h and about 80% of maximal activity was also showed in the culture broth of 60℃ for 18 h . Optimum reaction temperature and pH of the partial purified CGTase for soluble starch were 65℃ and pH 8.5-9.0, respectively. The partial purified CGTase were also stable below 80℃ and pH 5.0-10.0. When 1% soluble starch was digested with the partial purified CGTase, the yield of cyclodextrin was 49%.

Objectives : In order to investigate the efficacy and safety of the newly developed herbal medicine Jetongdan, a placebo-controlled randomized clinical trial of patients with osteoarthriotis of the knee was undertaken. Methods : Data were obtained from 80 patients with OA of the knee. After the enrollment, they were asked to answer a disease-specific questionnaire (Western Ontario and McMaster Universities (WOMAC) OA index) and analyzed with the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in order to evaluate the efficacy of Jetongdan, and analyzed for aspartate transaminase (AST) level, alanine transminase (ALT) level, blood urea mitrogen (BUN) level, and creatinine (Cr) level in order to evaluate the safety of Jetongdan. Results : The liver function and renal function did not deteriorate after treatment with Jetongdan. Composite WOMAC score and physical function subscale was improved, but pain subscale, stiffness subscale, and ESR were not improved by Jetongdan. This was possibly because the baseline characteristics of the two groups were not homogenized after randomization. Conclusions : Jetongdan could be a promising treatment option for osteoarthritis of the knee. Further study in a larger population with appropriate severity grades is recommended.
뇌졸중 후 중추성 통증 환자에 대한 동서협진이 진통과 재활에 미치는 영향

Purpose : In order to study the effectiveness of East-West pain treatment on central poststroke pain(CPSP), we evaluated its effect on alleviation of pain and rehabilitation of CPSP Patients who were treated with electroacupuncture and west pain treatment for four weeks. Methods : Twenty four patients diagnosed by their pain characteristics of central pain from stroke were treated with sympathetic nerve block, gabapentin, amitriptyline, and electroacupuncture for four weeks. Pain intensity through the visual analogue scale(VAS), and improvements of mobility and rehabilitation through the modified Barthel index(MBI) and Rankin scale(RS), respectively, before and after pain treatment were also assessed. Results : VAS pain scores were significantly improved from 7.7±1.7 to 4.4±2.0 with pain treatment(p<0.05). In accordance with improvement of pain scores, RS and MBI scores were also improved from 2.88±0.95 to 2.13± 1.01 and from 83.0± 16.9 to 94.7±9.5(p<0.05), respectively, with pain treatment(p<0.05). Conclusions : It was suggested that the active pain treatment was contributed to the rehabilitation of CPSP patients, resulting in improvement of quality of life of CPSP patients. Futhermore, East pain treatment in combination with West pain treatment may be useful modality to alleviate CPSP.

High entropy alloys (HEAs) have received tremendous attention in diferent applications because of their excellent corrosion resistance and superior mechanical properties. In the present work, a novel TiNbMoMnFe high entropy alloy systemwas synthesized and deposited on AISI 316L by DC magnetron sputtering system. The microstructure of the resulting thinflm was evaluated by grazing incidence X-ray difraction and feld emission electron microscope. It was found that the thinflm microstructure is composed of a crystalline solid solution (grain size of 76 nm) and an amorphous phase. The electrochemical investigations in Ringer’s solution revealed that a thin flm of 670 nm thick high entropy alloy has a low corrosioncurrent density of 0.024 μA cm−2, approximately 30% lower than that of the uncoated 316L. Meanwhile, the HEA thin flmshowed the highest pitting corrosion resistance and stability of the passive flm. The wettability examinations exhibited thatthe coated sample has a high contact angle of 90° in contrast to 60° for the uncoated ones. In summary, the TiNbMoMnFehigh entropy alloy thin flm shows great potential for use in biomaterial applications.

A new concept to evaluate the localized corrosion resistance of stacked Ti alloys such as additive-manufactured (AM)Ti–6Al–4V alloy is proposed. Crevice corrosion of subtractive-manufactured (SM) Ti–6Al–4V occurred on the surfacebeneath the crevice former, whereas localized corrosion of the AM alloy occurred in any vulnerable site irrespective of thecrevice assembly. The electrochemical critical localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT) was measured to evaluate theresistance of AM Ti–6Al–4V alloys to localized corrosion. The results showed that the localized corrosion of AM Ti–6Al–4V was attributable to the anisotropy and microstructure that resulted from rapid cooling, which were completely differentfrom the anisotropy and microstructure of SM Ti–6Al–4V. The optimum applied potential of AM Ti–6Al–4V in 25 wt%NaCl aqueous solution was deduced. The E-CLCT provides a useful criterion for determining the resistance of AM Ti alloysto localized corrosion and for comparing their resistances.
