Chronic ethanol consumption leads to memory impairment and also induces brain damage. The hippocampus has been particularly regarded as a possible target organ of alcoholic intoxication, since this structure plays a prominent function in memory processes. Cordyceps has been used as a traditional medicine in Asian countries for a long time. Different types of Cordyceps extract were reported to have various pharmacological activities including anti-tumor, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and immune modulatory effects. Guem Chung Cho is an artificial cultivated Cordyceps, and was supplied from GCordy (Seoul, Korea). Ethanol extract of Cordycep (50 g) was made by rotary evaporate, and resulting powder 8.29 g was obtained (yield 17%). In the present study, we investigated the effects of ethanol extract of Geum Chung Cho on short-term memory, cell proliferation and apoptosis in the hippocampus of ethanol-treated gerbils. The gerbils were divided into 5 groups (n = 10 in each group): Control group, alcohol-treated group, alcohol-treated and 0.001 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group, alcohol-treated and 0.01 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group, and alcohol-treated and 0.1 mg/kg Geum Chung Cho-applied group. Gerbils in the alcohol-treated groups were orally administered ethanol (1 g/kg) once a day for 2 weeks. Gerbils in the Guem Chung Cho-applied groups were orally administered Guem Chung Cho extract at each dosage 1 hour before ethanol consumption. Our results revealed that consumption of alcohol for 2 weeks deteriorated short-term memory, induced apoptosis, and inhibited cell proliferation, and reduced expressions of brain-derived neurotrophic (BDNF) and tyrosine kinase B (TrkB). However, Guem Chung Cho treatment alleviated alcohol-induced short-term memory impairment through enhancing cell proliferation and BDNF expression with inhibiting apoptosis in the hippocampus. Guem Chung Cho showed maximum effects at 0.1 mg/kg. Based on these results, alcohol extract of Guem Chung Cho may provide therapeutic value for the treatment of chronic alcohol-inducted brain injury. This study was supported by GCordy company.

This study on the environmental-ecological functional value of reclaiming from wet land for a standard of refutation on development and preservation. Korean wet land gives us seafood, social and cultural service of human and livelihood to be self-supporting the foods, supports etc, but at the same time wet land has ecologically sensitive and irreversible features. So we need to have maintainable management strategies considered the safe minimum standards. But Korean wet land has been developed 30% since 1980, and other wet land remain undeveloped has been pressured to develop. Pre-studies have been careless about the negative functions about water quality of paddy. But by the results of this study, we can know that total economic values are negative effects. The negative effects of environment pollution are bigger than the affirmative. And we need to compare and analyze the economic value of wet land and reclaimed land in order to produce more exact cost-benefit analysis on the preservation and development. But when we consider economic value of the liquid-quality purification between wet land and reclaimed land, the value of wet land is greater than reclaimed land.

Seed sowing is the major method for the establishment of cool-season grasses at the soccer fields, golf courses, etc. Germination speed of kentucky bluegrass(Poa prantensis L.: KB) is much slower than the other cool-season grasses. This study was conducted to solve the problems at the early stage of establishment with KB. The best priming conditions of KB, drying method after soaking in the water, and covering materials will be selected. To reduce irrigation frequency and quantity for seed germination, seeds of KB were exposed to the different soaking temperature(4, 20, 25, 30℃). soaking durations(3, 6, 10, 13, 19, 23 days), storage periods(3, 6, 9 days), storage humidities(30, 50, 100%), shading rate(0, 50, 100%), drying methods(dry in the air, heating, mix soaked seed with profile=1:2), and covering materials(70% shade net, fiber net). The optimum soaking temperature and duration for the seed priming of KB were 20℃ and 10 days, respectively. The optimum storage period and humidity were 3 days and 100%, respectively, Under 50% shading, germination rate was the highest. In drying method after soaking, mixture of seeds and profile(1:2) was optimum for sowing. Using the thin fiber net as covering material after sowing was good for not moving seeds and improved germination speed and rate.

The main goals of the study were to investigate the sediment quality and trace metal distribution in sediment of Kwangyang Bay, south coastal of Korea. Surface sediment sampling were performed in November, 2000 and February and March, 2001. The concentration of H₂S, IL and COD in sediment were measured by a manual of the Department of Marine Environment of Korea. The extracted trace metals Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Zn in sediments mean analyzed by the flame atomic absorption spectrophotometer with an instrument of model Shimadzu AA-6701F. H₂S, IL and COD in the surface sediment were 1.3 mg/g, 5.9 % and 15.0 mg/g, respectively. The mean content of Fe, Cu, Cd, Pb and Zn were 1523 mg/kg, 4.799 mg/kg, 1.321 mg/kg 9.285 mg/kg and 9.353 mg/kg, respectively. All of these measured trace metals level were over the other reported trace metal level in sediment of coastal area. According to histograms, the content of H₂S, IL and COD and trace metals in sediment of this study were affected by artificial activities rather than natural process.
Identification of Porphyromonas gingivalis lipopolysaccharide-binding proteins in human saliva
Choi, S.,Baik, J.E.,Jeon, J.H.,Cho, K.,Seo, D.G.,Kum, K.Y.,Yun, C.H.,Han, S.H. Pergamon Press 2011 Molecular immunology Vol.48 No.15
Porphyromonas gingivalis causes periodontal diseases and its lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is considered as a major virulence factor responsible for pathogenesis. Since initial recognition of P. gingivalis LPS (Pg.LPS) in the oral cavity might be crucial for the host response, we identified Pg.LPS-binding proteins (Pg.LPS-BPs) using Pg.LPS-immobilized beads and a high-resolution mass spectrometry. LPS purified from P. gingivalis was conjugated onto N-hydroxysuccinimidyl-Sepharose(R) 4 Fast Flow beads. Notably, Pg.LPS-conjugated beads could stimulate Toll-like receptor 2 (TLR2) as determined by a TLR2-depdendent reporter expression system using CHO/CD14/TLR2. In addition, the Pg.LPS-conjugated beads induced the production of inflammatory mediators such as nitric oxide and interferon-gamma-inducible protein-10 in the macrophage cell-line, RAW 264.7. These results imply that Pg.LPS retained its immunological properties during the conjugation process. Then, the Pg.LPS-conjugated beads were mixed with a pool of saliva obtained from nine human subjects to capture Pg.LPS-BPs and molecular identities were determined by LTQ-Orbitrap hybrid fourier transform mass spectrometry. Pg.LPS-BPs captured at high frequencies included alpha-amylase, cystatin, prolactin-inducible protein, lysozyme C, immunoglobulin components, serum albumin, lipocalin-1, and submaxillary gland androgen-regulated protein 3B. These proteins are known to be involved in bacterial adhesion and colonization, anti-microbial functions or modulation of immune responses.

Seo, Su-Han,Hur, Hoon,An, Chang-Wook,Yi, Xian,Kim, June-Young,Han, Sang-Uk,Cho, Yong-Kwan The Korean Gastric Cancer Association 2011 Journal of gastric cancer Vol.11 No.2
Purpose: Gastric cancer surgery is a common operation in East Asia, such as Korea and Japan, and there has been a significant increase in the need for this procedure due to the aging population. As a result, surgery for the treatment of gastric cancer for elderly patients is expected to increase. This study examined the effect of old age on gastric cancer surgery, and analyzed the operative risk factors for elderly patients. Materials and Methods: From November 2008 to August 2010, 590 patients, who underwent a curative resection for gastric cancers, were enrolled. Patients who underwent palliative or emergency surgery were excluded. A retrospective analysis of the correlation between surgical outcomes and age was performed. The elderly were defined as patients who were over the age of 65 years. Results: The mean age of all patients was 58.3 years, and complications occurred in 87 cases (14.7%). The most common complication was wound infection and severe complications requiring surgical, endoscopic, or radiologic intervention developed in 52 cases (8.8%). The rate of complications increased with increasing age of the patients. Univariate analysis revealed age, comorbidity, extent of resection, operation time, and combined resection to be associated with surgical complications. In particular, age over 75 years old, operation time, and comorbidity were predictive factors in multivariate analysis. In the elderly, only comorbidity was associated with surgical complications Conclusions: The patients' age is the most important factor for predicting surgical complications. Surgeons should pay an attention to the performance of gastric cancer surgery on elderly patients. In particular, it must be performed carefully for elderly patients with a comorbidity.
