A case of vaginal laceration during use of a menstrual cup

Interest in menstrual cups among Korean women increased after an environmental group reported the detection of harmful chemicals in locally sold sanitary pads in August 2017. In December 2017, the Korean Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) approved the first menstrual cup to be imported and sold within Korea. However, consumers and clinicians should be aware of the potential complications of menstrual cups, even though such complications are rare. We report the case of a 22-year-old woman with vaginal bleeding from an anterior fornix laceration which was caused by the removal of a menstrual cup. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of vaginal fornix laceration associated with menstrual cup use.

Objective: This study is to investigate if red fruit oil (RFO, Pandanus conoideus Lamk), which regulates NO and reactive oxygen species (ROS) metabolism, suppresses the senescence and inflammatory reaction of endothelial cells. Methods: The antioxidant activity of RFO was evaluated using 2,2,-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay. To evaluate anti-senescence effect, 2 mM H2O2 was treated to human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). 84 genes related to oxidative stress were evaluated using RT2-profiler PCR array. For anti-inflammatory effect, 1 μg/mL lipopolysaccharide (LPS) was treated to murine monocyte. The level of NO, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and signaling proteins were measured using ELISA, real-time PCR, and western blot analysis. Results: DPPH assay showed that antioxidant potent of RFO was 78.5 times 1mM ascorbic acid. RFO promoted the activation of superoxide dismutase (SOD) which induced degradation of endothelin (ET-1) in HUVECs. RFO increased the levels of SOD, glutathione peroxidases 3 (GPx), and peroxiredoxins (TPx), whereas it decreased the ROS metabolism gene and the oxidative stress responsive genes. In macrophages, RFO reduced nitric oxide (NO), prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), ROS and significantly both protein and mRNA level of iNOS. RFO inhibited the translocation of NF-κB p65 subunit, phosphorylation of I-κB, Extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), and c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) in a dose-dependent manner. Conclusion: RFO inhibited the senescence of endothelial cell by superoxide anion/ROS through regulating the ROS metabolism gene and the inflammatory cytokines through NF-κB. To conclude, RFO could be candidate of clinical target for treating vascular senescence or inflammation.

The current study investigated the anti-obesity effect of Cissus quadrangularsis extracts (CQR-300) and its molecular action mechanism on obese mice induced high-fat diet (HFD). To induce the obesity, mice were fed a HFD for 6 weeks and then fed HFD only or HFD with CQR-300 at 50 and 200 mg/kg. Then, body weight gain and white adipose tissue weights were measured. We investigated the reduction in body fat and the regulation of fatty acid synthesis was measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry and real-time PCR with Western blot, respectively. In vitro study, CQR-300 inhibited pancreatic lipase activity. The CQR-300 treatment was significantly decreased the body weight gain and adip℃ytes size as well as white adipose tissues weights in HFD-induced obese mice. Furthermore, CQR-300 reduced the body fat and fat mass with regulating of adipose tissue hormones as leptin. Treatment with 50 mg/kg CQR-300 showed effectively lower expression levels of adipogenesis/lipogenesis related genes and proteins such as CCAAT/enhancer binding protein α (C/EBPα), peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ (PPARγ), Sterol regulatory element binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), and fatty acid synthase (FAS) in white adipose tissue (WAT) as compared with the HFD fed only mice. These results suggest that the CQR-300 has an anti-obesity effect via inhibition of lipase activity, decrease the body fat mass by regulating the adipogenesis and lipogenesis related genes and proteins in epididymal adipose tissue with evaluate body fat reduce in the HFD-induced obese mice.

Citrus cultivation plays a pivotal role, making a significant contribution to global fruit production and dietary consumption. Accurate identification of viral pathogens is imperative for the effective management of plant viral disease in citrus crops. High-throughput sequencing serves as an alternative approach, enabling comprehensive pathogen identification on a large scale without requiring pre-existing information. In this study, we employed HTS to investigate viral pathogens infecting citrus in three different regions of South Korea: Jejudo (Jeju), Wando-gun (Wando), and Dangjin-si (Dangjin). The results unveiled diverse viruses and viroids that exhibited regional variations. Notably, alongside the identification of well-known citrus viruses such as satsuma dwarf virus, citrus tatter leaf virus, and citrus leaf blotch virus (CLBV), this study also uncovered several viruses and viroids previously unreported in Korean citrus. Phylogenetic analysis revealed that majority of identified viruses exhibited the closest affilations with isolates from China or Japan. However, CLBV and citrus viroid-I-LSS displayed diverse phylogenetic positions, reflecting their regional origins. This study advances our understanding of citrus virome diversity and regional dynamics through HTS, emphasizing its potential in unraveling intricate viral pathogens in agriculture. Consequently, it significantly contributes to disease management strategies, ensuring the resilience of the citrus industry.

The MERA-F breathing circuit is a light in weight, disposable, multi-purpose breathing system corsisting of double coaxial tubes ; inner tube for inspiration and outer corrugate tube for expiration. This circuit is especially effective on head and neck operations that may lead to accidental disconnection or extubation. And the circuit provides effective carbon dioxide elimination with only conventional total fresh gas flow(70 ml/kg/minute) and appropriate maintenance of heat and humidity of the airway mucosa.

In recent years the use of epidural opiates has increased and although this method of pain relief has shown good results in clinical practice it is still subject to certain drowbacks, the most serious of which appears to be delayed respiratory depression. Since ketamine administered systemically is unlikely to produce respiratory depression it seemed worthwhile to investigate the possibility of exploiting the potent analgesic property to ketarnine by its epidural administration. The analgesic effect of ketamine 4 mg, administered epidural space, was evaluated. The duration of pain relief varied from less than 3 hours in 20% to over 24 hours in 30 % of the cases. In 62.5% of the cases pain relief exceeded 6 hours. There was no evidence of respiratery depression, and there no postoperative neurologic sequelae. The present results indicated the need for farther studios to compare the efficacy and safety of epidural ketamine with the response to epidural opioids for the relief of postoperatiue pain.
