Many mammals in temperate zone are affected by the distinctive changes of four seasons. Their reproductive status is active under summer climate and inactive under severe winter weather. The golden hamsters(Mesocricetus auratus) are seasonal breeding animals whose sexual activties are regulated by the photoperiod. Melatonin is a hormone secreted from the pineal gland, which transmits the photoperiodic information into reproductive endocrine system. The synthesis and release of melatonin reflect photoperiod. A proper administration of melatonin suppresses the sexual function. In the present study, the effects of melatonin on the gonadal activity were examined in golden hamsters received melatonin in the evening daily or once in 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7 days. The results showed that testicular regression of golden hamsters was occurred in animals received melatonin injections every day and every other day in the evening. The injections of melatonin once in 3, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days had no effects on gonadal function. The present investigation suggests that the effects of photoperiod on the reproduction of male golden hamsters is mediated by the melatonin.
The Test for Verifying a Tip-Over Analysis of a Dry Storage Cask

사용후연료 건식저장용기의 전복사고조건에 대한 1/3 축소모델의 시험을 실시하여 전복해석에 대한 검증을 하였다. 전복해석은 전복각도에 따른 위치에너지와 동일한 운동에너지를 가지는 초기각속도를 이용하여 결정된 각 점에서의 속도를 충돌직전 모델에 대한 초기경계값으로 입력하여 해석하였다. 전복시험에 따른 캐니스터의 구조적 건전성을 확인하기 위하여 육안검사와 함께 액체침투법과 초음파 탐상법와 같은 비파괴검사를 실시하였다. 전복충격에 의하여 저장용기의 뚜껑 에 변형 이 발생되었지만 캐니스터의 구조적 건전성이 유지되었다. 시험에서 취득한 변형률과 가속도를 해석결과와 비교하여 해석 에 대한 검증을 실시하였다. 해석결과는 시험결과보다 대체로 두 배 정도의 큰 값을 주는 것으로 나타났다. A test of the 1/3 scale model was conducted to verify the tip-over analysis of a dry. concrete storage cask under a hypothetical accident condition. The tip-over analysis was executed using the velocity at each point as the initial conditions of the model just before the impact. The initial velocity was determined from the initial angular velocity, which would make the equivalent kinetic energy to the potential energy. To confirm the structural integrity of the canister, the visual testing and the non-detective testings such as Liquid Penetrant testing and Ultrasonic Testing were conducted. The lid of a storage cask was plastically deformed near the impact point. The structural integrity of storage cask was maintained. To verify the tip-over analysis the strains and the accelerations acquired by the tip-over test were compared with those by the analyses. The results of the analysis were larger than the test results about two times.

We reviewed 549 electrocardiograms obtained from 95 patients with Korean hemorrhagic fever to investigate the incidence and electrocardiographic characteristics, observe evolutional changes in those findings during the course of illness, identify the correlations with clinical findings, and then suggest pathophysiologic mechanisms in the development of abnormal electrocardiographic findings. The overall incidence of electrocardiographic abnormalites was 95.7%, and the frequency of each phase was 87.8% in the febrile phase, 91.3% in the hypotensive phase, 86.5% in the oliguric phase, 76.4% in the diuretic phase and 43.0% in the convalescent phase. The cardinal electrocardiographic findings were QT prolongation(82.1%), sinus bradycardia(73.7%), prominent U wave(53.7%), tall and peaked T wave(51.6%), ST-T changes(41.1 %) and sinus tachycardia(35.8%). The most frequently observed electrocardiographic findings of each phase were sinus tachycardia in the febrile and hypotensive phase, QT prolongation in the oliguric phase, sinus bradycardia in the diuretic phase and prominent U wave in the convalescent phase. The occurrence of abnormal electrocardiograms increased in patients with high serum creatinine levels during the oliguric and diuretic phases. The electrocardiographic abnormalities that persisted to the convalescent phase were QT prologation(seven cases), prominent U wave(seven cases), sinus bradycardia(five cases), and tall and peaked T wave(four cases). Even though almost all of the electrocardiographic abnormalities were mild and recovered shortly after the convalescent phase and there were no diagnostic electrocardiograms, we observed noteworthy electrocardiographic characteristics and evolutional changes during the course of illness and suggested the primary electrocardiographic changes in Korean hemorrhagic fever.

We studied total 413 cases of febrile neonates, infants and children, which were divided into 232 cases of CRP positive group and 181 cases of CRP negative group, and compared ESR, WBC, polymorphonuclear leucocyte count, band form neutrophil and disease distribution in both group. We concluded that CRP is important and may be valuable screening test for the detection of bacterial infection in febrile and infectious neonates, infants and children.

The attempt was made to investigate the presence of myocardial depressant factor in the plasma of rabbits subjected to 2 hours occlusion followed by release of superior mesenteric artery(S.A.O.). The release of SAO caused the severe depression of mean arterial blood presure from 84.7±2.8 mmHg to 32.7±4.5 mmHg. All animals died with in 20-40 minutes after the release. These severe alterations of systemic arterial blood pressure were never observed in sham-operated rabbits. The effect of SAOshocked plasma on the contractility of rabbit papillary muscles from right ventricle was bioassayed in vitro. The isometric contraction of muscle preparations in plasma were triggered by halffield electrical stimulation. The degrees of contractile force in shamoperated plasma were compared with that in SAOshocked plasma. Papillary muscle preparations in 5-20 : 1 diluted SAOshocked plasma showed 21% decrease in the developed peak tension than those in the shamoperated plasma. It was found that the rate of tension development (+dT/dt) was more affected than the time to peack tension. The above results suggest that the decreased myocardial contractility following the release of occlusion of superior mesenteric artery is due to the presence of myocardial depressant factor in the plasma.
