Phase II detoxification enzymes are known to play essential roles in the detoxification and elimination of activated carcinogens during tumor initiation, while apoptosis is one of the most important chemopreventive targets for inhibiting tumor promotion in cancer. In this study, we investigated the cancer chemopreventive activity of two plant extracts, the ethanolic extract of Adenocaulon himalaicum (AHE) and the butanolic fraction of AHE (AHB). Both, the AHE and AHB induced NQO1 activity and had relatively high chemoprevention indices (CI = 12.4). The AHE and AHB were associated with increased NQO1 and HO-1 mRNA levels via Nrf2-ARE pathway activation. In addition, the AHB increased CYP1A1 activity through AhR-XRE pathway activation. We also found that the AHE and AHB induced apoptosis, as evidenced by phosphatidylserine externalization, an increase in the sub-G0/G1 content, chromatin condensation, poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase cleavage, and p53 induction. These data suggest that AHE and AHB act as bifunctional inducers and that their chemopreventive effects result from the biphasic induction of phase II detoxification enzymes and apoptosis. Therefore, these results suggest that A. himalaicum plant extracts have potential for use as chemopreventive agents for the prevention and/or treatment of human cancers.
A theoretical prediction of cage occupancy and heat of dissociation of THF-CH4 hydrate

This work presents a theoretical prediction of the cage occupancy of CH4 in small cages and the heat of dissociation for THF-CH4 hydrate using the predictive Soave-Redlich-Kwong group contribution method combined with the UNIFAC model. The predicted cage occupancy of CH4 gradually increases with increasing pressure, indicating that the CH4 molecules could readily be encaged in the small 512 cages of the sII hydrate framework stabilized by THF molecules. The molar enthalpy of encagement of CH4 in the small 512 cages of the sII clathrate hydrate is estimated to be 26.7±1.7 kJ mol−1.
구조적 심장 질환이 없는 한국 성인에서심박와류 및 심박변이도 분석

Background and Objectives:Heart rate variability (HRV) illustrates the autonomic integration of the heart.Depressed HRV has been proven to be associated with an increased risk of cardiac death, whereas heart rate turbulence(HRT) is believed to reflect baroreflex sensitivity and it was recently introduced as another noninvasivetool for risk stratification. The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between the HRT and HRVparameters in Korean adults with a structurally normal heart. Subjects and Methods:We studied 61 adults(males: 31) who showed ventricular premature complexes on 24 hour Holter recording and who were found tohave normal hearts on full noninvasive investigation. We calculated the mean heart rate (RR interval), the numberof VPBs, the time- and frequency-domain HRV parameters and two HRT parameters: turbulence onset (To) andturbulence slope (Ts). Results:Ts showed a strong correlation with the HRV parameters (LF/HF ratio: r=0.35,p=0.006; VLF: r=0.32, p=0.013; LF: r=0.27, p=0.035; SDNN: r=0.28, p=0.029; SDANN: r=0.32, p=0.012),but To showed no significant correlation with the HRV parameters. Conclusion:The HRT parameters, and especiallyTs, correlate strongly with the HRV parameters; therefore, Ts should be considered as a parameter thatreflects the overall cardiac autonomic tone. (Korean Circulation J 2006;36:126-132) 배경 및 목적: 구조적 심질환이 없는 한국 성인에서 심박와류 지표의 값 을 분석하고 이를 심박변이 지표와 비교 분석함으로써 심박 와류가 압반사민감도 뿐만 아니라 동결절의 자율신경평형에 도 관계됨을 보고자 하였다. 방 법: 비침습적 검사로 구조적 심질환이 없는 것으로 판명된 성 인에서 24시간 홀터 심전도를 통해 심박와류 지표와 시간 영역 및 주파수영역의 심박변이 지표들을 각각 비교 분석하 였다. 결 과: 심박와류 지표 중 Ts가 주파수 영역의 지표 중 자율신경 평형을 대변하는 LF/HF 비와 통계학적으로 유의하게 가장 밀접한 연관성을 보여 주었다(p=0.006). 주파수영역 및 시 간영역의 지표 중 미주신경 지배 양상을 보이는 고주파수 영 역 지표 및 rMSSD, pNN50과는 유의한 관련성이 없었고 총 주파수 및 극저주파수 영역 및 SDNN, SDANN과 통계학적 으로 유의한 연관성을 보여 교감신경 지배와 더 밀접한 관 계가 있음을 알 수 있었다. 심박와류 지표 중 To는 어떠한 심박변이 지표와도 관련성이 없었다. 결 론: 24시간 홀터심전도를 통한 심박와류 지표 및 심박변이 지표를 구조적 심질환이 없는 성인에서 비교 분석했을 때 심박와류 지표 중 TS는 압반사민감도 에 의해 결정될 뿐만 아니라 동결절의 교감신경 및 부교감신경의 평형상태에도 영향을 받음을 알 수 있었다.

We numerically investigate the effect of the incidence angle of sunlight on the optimized folding angle of V-shaped organic solar cells (VOSCs) to obtain the best power conversion efficiency in a realistically operating environment. The light absorbance at the active layer is calculated based on the finite element method with respect to the incidence angle of sunlight and the folding angle of the VOSC. We calculate the generation energy density per day at each folding angle by integrating the angular response of the short-circuit current and the open-circuit voltage with the consideration of the variation of the incidence angle during daytime. We show that the optimized folding angle of the VOSC based on the variation of the generation energy density per day is close to that determined from the variation of the electric power density in normal incidence, which has been widely used to optimize the folding angle of VOSCs.
