This study aims to compare the change patterns vs. risk factors of osteoporosis depending on the classification of the severity of pulmonary function in patients with chronic pulmonary disease, identify the highly relevant factors and points of time among the patient's period-specific factors, and provide basic analytical data of osteoporosis in patients with chronic pulmonary disease. This study targeted 48 outpatients who were receiving outpatient treatment after being diagnosed with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease at H hospital located at South Jeolla Province. All of them were classified into four groups depending on the classification of the severity of GOLD, and bone density was measured from each group in order to measure and compare the related risk factors. As a result, there was a significant difference in body weight, BMI, FEV1 in FEV1/FVC (p<0.001); there was also a significant difference in changes of T-score between experimental groups (p<0.01); and there was a significant difference in red blood cell count, white blood cell count, and C-protein and erythrocyte sedimertation rate (p<0.01)(p<0.01). It was found that patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease were exposed to diseases and simultaneously to the risk of osteoporosis. Physically, inflammation reactions got worse largely in serious cases. Smoking and steroid use were also risk factors. Thus, it is considered that the risk factors should be recognized simultaneously according to the classification of severity as well as pulmonary function in treatment manuals for the patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.
The Location of Multifidus Atrophy in Patients With a Single Level, Unilateral Lumbar Radiculopathy

Objective To identify the correlations between the location of multifidus atrophy and the level of lumbar radiculopathy.Methods Thirty-seven patients who had unilateral L4 or L5 radiculopathy were divided into 2 groups; the L4 radiculopathy (L4 RAD) group and the L5 radiculopathy (L5 RAD) group. Bilateral lumbar multifidus muscles at the mid-spinous process level of L4 vertebra (L4 MSP), the mid-spinous process level of L5 vertebra (L5 MSP), and the mid-sacral crest level of S1 vertebra (S1 MSC) were detected in T1 axial magnetic resonance imaging. The total muscle cross-sectional area of multifidus muscles (TMCSA) and the pure muscle cross-sectional area of multifidus muscles (PMCSA) were measured by a computerized analysis program, and the ratio of PMCSA to TMCSA (PMCSA/TMCSA) was calculated.Results There were no significant differences in TMCSA between the involved and the uninvolved sides in both groups. PMCSA was only significantly smaller at the S1 MSC on the involved side as compared with the uninvolved side in the L5 RAD group. The ratio of PMCSA to TMCSA was the lowest at the L5 MSP on the involved side in the L4 RAD group and at the S1 MSC on the involved side in the L5 RAD group. Conclusion Our findings suggest that the most severe atrophy of multifidus muscle may occur at the mid-spinous process or mid-sacral crest level of the vertebra which is one level below the segmental number of the involved nerve root in patients with a single-level, unilateral lumbar radiculopathy.

Purpose: This study was conducted in order to measure fatigue as an objective index, depression and health-related quality of life of patients with COPD in daily life, to understand the correlation between them, and to present reasons for using the results clinically. Methods: This study is intended to evaluate and compare depression, the health-related quality of life of each group after measuring lactic acid levels of 39 male patients with COPD, and dividing those with measurement values than the normal value into the experimental group, and those with normal values into the control group. Results: When comparing depression between the experimental group and the control group, it was measured at 10.38 in the experimental group, and at 7.00 in the control group (p<0.05). Health-related quality of life between the experimental group and the control group was measured at 51.8 in the experimental group, and at 48.67 in the control group (p>0.05). Conclusion: According to the results described above, it appears that patients with COPD have adapted to their disease in some degree for a long period of time, and they are physically and psychologically adjusting to the fatigue they experience, in their own ways of adapting. These results imply that improving physical activity is associated with relief of fatigue and improvement of the quality of life. Thus, there is a need for developing and researching an exercise program and a physical therapy intervention for enhancement of physical activity.

This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of Padina arborescens and 1–O–myristoyl–2–O–oleoyl–3–O–(a–D–glucopyranosyl)–glycerol(MOGG), its active component, on the prevention of hair loss. The P. arborescens extract and MOGG inhibited the activity of 5a-reductase, which converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone(DHT), a main cause of androgenetic alopecia. When immortalized rat vibrissa dermal papilla cells were treated with MOGG, the proliferation of dermal papilla cells significantly increased. In addition, we found that the P. arborescens extract and MOGG could open the KATP channel, which may contribute to increase hair growth. Furthermore, MOGG promoted PGE2 production in HaCaT cells. The results suggest that MOGG from the P. arborescens extract has the potential to treat alopecia via 5a-reductase inhibition, the proliferation of dermal papilla, the opening of the KATP channel and/or increase of PGE2 production.

Grateloupia elliptica has been reported to have the proliferation effect of dermal papilla cells (DPCs), which play important roles in the regulation of hair cycle. In the present study, we examined in vitro and in vivo hair growth-promoting effect of Grateloupia elliptica. When isolated rat vibrissa follicles were treated with extract of G. elliptica, the hair-fiber lengths of the vibrissa follicles significantly increased. Furthermore, the G. elliptica extract accelerated the telogen-angen transition in C57BL/6 mice. To investigate the molecular mechanisms of the G. elliptica extract on the proliferation of DPCs, we examined the activation of wnt/b-catenin signaling which is known to regulate hair follicle development, differentiation and hair growth. The G. elliptica extract activated wnt/b-catenin signaling via the increase of b-catenin and phospho-GSK3b. In addition, the G. elliptica extract increased the level of cyclin E and CDK2, while the level of p27kip1 was decreased. These results suggest that the the G. elliptica extract may induce hair growth by proliferation of DPCs via cell-cycle progression and the activation of Wnt/b-catenin signaling.
