The high coherence of laser beam has made it possible to observe interference effects even in the light scattered from rough surfaces. That's why, when object with a scattering surface is illuminated with laser light, we do see a speckled appearance due to random interference. This sort of unique property of laser speckle has brought into existence the new noncontacting techniques such as speckle metrology method of measuring deformation, displacement, and vibration etc of objects with high optical sensitivity. The measurable range of speckle metrology especially used to measure in-plane information, however, is limited by some factors, the so-called strain, rotation, tilt of surface and out of displacement perpendicular to the plane of analysis. This restrictions severly limits the measurable range of speckle metrology by causing the decorrelation of speckle patterns. It is the purpose of this paper to give a survey on the measurable limitation of speckle photography method that is one of speckle metrology. Namely we will discuss the mutual relationships and problems of each limitations adding the restriction of the largest and smallest displacement measurable with speckle methods.

N/A Passive smokers are exposed to a quantitatively smaller & qualitatively different smoke exposure than active smokers. A relatively large body of data relates parental cigarette smoking to the occurrence of both acute respiratory illness & chronic respiratory symptoms in children. We have studied the relationship between family members smoking habits & respiratory disease, in 7yr to 13yr-old nonselected 444 school children. We checked the urine cotinine levels, urine nicotine metabolite, for the assessment of passive smoke intake. The mean urinary cotinine concentration for the children of smoking family was 5.54±2.85μ㏖/L, and for the children of non-smoking family was 5.03±2.6μ㏖/L without any difference in statistical means. Passive smoking did not affect the frequency of respiratory illness. However, wheezing episodes were increased in children who have a smoker in the family members (P<0.01). We conclude that passive smoking could increase the wheezing episodes in children.

<P> <I>With 6 figures</I> </P><P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The Ser/Thr protein kinase subfamily of the novel Arabidopsis protein kinase (NAK) family is unique to plants and is not found in animals or prokaryotes, suggesting that NAKs play specific signalling roles in the control of plant growth and development. However, little is known about the function of NAK‐type protein kinases. Here, we used a transgenic tomato plant system to examine the biological functions of AFSK, a NAK‐type protein kinase isolated from apple fruits. Gain‐of‐function transgenic tomato plants containing the <I>AFSK</I> gene were developed by <I>Agrobacterium</I>‐mediated transformation and plant regeneration. The plants had normal flower phenotype with respect to their overall shapes and sizes. However, the plants displayed decreased self‐fertilization and early flower drop at the floral abscission zone following petal loss. These results suggest that AFSK affects pollen development and promotes floral abscission.</P>

<P>Abstract </P><P>Kami-shoyo-san (KSS), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat patients with neuropsychiatric disorders. The aim of the present paper was to investigate whether KSS has antidepressant-like effects, and to assess its mechanism of action, using male Sprague–Dawley rats given 10-fold (KSS 10X) or 20-fold (KSS 20X) the typical human daily dosage. Immobility time was measured by the forced swimming test, and hippocampal neurogenesis was quantified under immobilization stress. Rats given KSS 20X, but not those given KSS 10X, had a significantly lower immobility time and improved neurogenesis in the hippocampus. These results suggest that KSS possesses an antidepressant-like effect at a behavioral and molecular level.</P>

<P><B>Background and Purpose—</B></P><P>The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether bright vessel appearance on arterial spin labeling (ASL) MRI can help localize arterial occlusion sites in patients with acute ischemic stroke.</P><P><B>Methods—</B></P><P>Patients who underwent MRI for suspected acute ischemic stroke, as identified by an area of restricted diffusion, were included. All images were visually analyzed for the presence or absence of (1) arterial occlusion on time-of-flight MR angiography, (2) bright vessel appearance on ASL images, and (3) susceptibility vessel sign. McNemar 2-tailed test was used to compare the sensitivities of ASL and susceptibility-weighted imaging for the detection of arterial occlusion, using MR angiography as the reference standard.</P><P><B>Results—</B></P><P>ASL bright vessel appearance was significantly more common in the group with occlusion than in the group without occlusion (94% [33 of 35] versus 21% [17 of 82], respectively; <I>P</I><0.001). The bright vessel appearance, when present, was seen proximal or distal to the occlusion site. The bright vessel appearance had a significantly higher sensitivity for the detection of occlusion than the susceptibility vessel sign (94% [33 of 35] versus 66% [23 of 35], respectively; <I>P</I>=0.002). In cases with negative MR angiography, the bright vessel appearance helped identify more additional arterial occlusions than the susceptibility vessel sign (21% [17 of 82] versus 10% [8 of 82], respectively; <I>P</I>=0.012).</P><P><B>Conclusions—</B></P><P>The bright vessel appearance on ASL imaging can provide an important diagnostic clue for the detection and localization of arterial occlusion sites in patients with acute ischemic stroke.</P>
Choline Acetyltransferase 유전자 다형성이 경도인지손상 발현에 미치는 영향

Objectives : The potential association between choline acetyltransferase(CHAT) polymorphism and the risk of mild cognitive impairment(MCI) has not been investigated in Korea. We examined the main effect of CHAT polymorphism and its interaction with apolipoprotein E(APOE) polymorphism in the development of MCI in elderly Korean sample. Methods : We analyzed CHAT 2384G > A polymorphism and APOE polymorphism among 149 MCI subjects with MCI and 298 normal controls. We tested the association between MCI and CHAT A allele status using a logistic regression model. In addition, we employed generalized multifactor dimensionality reduction(GMDR) to investigate the interaction between CHAT and APOE with regard to the risk of MCI. Results : The CHAT A allele was associated with AD risk(OR = 1.59, 95% CI = 1.02-2.48, p = 0.042). No significant gene-gene interaction between CHAT and APOE was found in GMDR method(testing balanced accuracy = 0.540, p = 0.055). Conclusion : The CHAT A allele was associated with MCI risk in the Korean elderly. Its interaction with the APOE ${\varepsilon}4$ allele was not significant with regard to the development of MCI.

Two Hahns Macaws (Ara nobilis nobilis), three and nine-month-old, with a three-weeks history of weight loss and anorexia were diagnosed presumptively with proventricular dilatation disease (PDD) by radiographic examination. The birds were treated with antimicrobials, analgesics, and fluid administration.However, these birds died three weeks after the first signs of PDD. At necropsy, the birds had severely dilated proventriculus, severe pectoral muscles atrophy, and blood vessels congestion on cortex of cerebrum. The partial matrix gene of avian bornavirus (ABV) was detected by RT-PCR from tissues of the brain, feather calami, and proventiculus of each PDD-suspected birds. This report describes the first detection of ABV in PDD-suspected Hahns Macaw in Korea.
