This paper studies the features and meanings of female ghosts that appear in Korean classic novels. It explores the functions of the subject matter of female ghosts in the novels, and the aspects and meanings of changes.
Ghosts refer to spirits that could not leave this life and remain in this world because of their wrongful deaths. Ghosts have been discussed for several times in research on Pilgi and Yadam. However, in a number of studies of novels, they either were treated as peripheral to male characters, or failed to draw attention even when they were the main characters because they were “ghosts”. Ghosts in novels should not be taken lightly though, because they play a leading role in narration and place meaning to the works. Ghosts belong to the world of fantasy, not reality. The role of fantasy is to unveil what has been concealed in reality and to reveal real-life problems. In that sense, ghosts, who fall into the category of fantasy, are the ones who show hidden problems of the reality. Moreover, ghosts are closely related to the reality as they were created because of problems in the real life. This demonstrates that ghosts may serve as a window through which we can peek at the real-life issues.
Ghosts that make appearances in classic novels are usually female. Instead of trying to dissolve their grudges by themselves, they always appear before someone who will assist them, or a helper, and complain of an injustice. They try their grudge dissolution by triggering the desire in the helper or catching him on his deficiency. With this in mind, the study of ghosts in classic novels should start by looking into the details of what the ghosts have to say and the process of grudge dissolution. Moreover, studies on the helpers are essential as the ghosts always go through them.
Based on these premises, Chapter II examines the definition of ghosts, why it matters that the ghosts are “female,” the starting point of female ghosts, and their narrative function.
This paper intends to differentiate the concept of ghosts by comparing it with that of “inauspicious spirits” defined in Confucianism. Ghosts and inauspicious spirits are similar in that they were created from wrongful deaths, but as for ghosts, the focus is on how they got to hold grudges and how they reveal problems prevailing in the reality. In contrast, inauspicious spirits are defined as those that have not got any commemorative rites by their descendents and their concept was made to include all the sprits born in irregular natural phenomena into the rules of Confucianism. Against this backdrop, ghosts may be utilized as a channel to explain things that cannot be explained with the Confucian principles.
Why are the ghosts female? Deceased women chose to be ghosts to be granted an opportunity to raise their voice despite their socially vulnerable position. Women were always the weak even if they were from the ruling class. In particular, women in Joseon Dynasty, the period when Neo-Confucianism was introduced and patriarchy was settling down, had no choice but to remain in the margins. That was why they could not speak up against any injustice they experienced. However, these victimized women recovered their lost voices as they became ghosts, and they got to reveal and resist wrong social orders established in the reality.
The first narrative literature in which ghosts are found is considered to be Chinese Supernatural Tales in the Six Dynasties. In Korean narrative literature, the evidences of ghosts are found in the stories of Mil-bon-choi-sa (密本摧邪), Do-hwa-nyeo and Bi-hyeong-rang(桃花女鼻荊郞), Chi-kui (志鬼) from The Heritage of the Three States, and the stories of Soo-sap-seok-nam (首揷石枏) and Choi Chi-won (崔致遠) from Soo-ih-jeon (殊異傳). In particular, Choi Chi-won (崔致遠) is a model of the female ghosts narratives in classic novels. The two ladies in the novel died while being disgruntled at their marriages, which is in common with the ghosts in classic novels who faced their death filled with grudges. In addition, they did not go to the afterworld and made appearance before Choi Chi-won to dissolve their grudges. Therefore, it is safe to say that the subject matter of female ghosts in classic novels started from the novel Choi Chi-won (崔致遠).
Female ghosts talk about how they feel they have been wronged, try to dissolve grudge and expose what they have been through is wrong. In particular, they always complain of an injustice to helpers and show the story behind how they turned into ghosts. In other words, the most important reason behind their appearance is to let others know about the unfairness they experienced. This exposure reveals problems in the society, which can win the sympathy of the readers because the problems are those of the living as well as of the ghosts. These stories of ghosts are chosen as a material for narration to disclose the problems of humans via ghosts, not because unfair incidents were frequented, but because the conditions for discovering the stories were satisfied. In this sense, ghosts are a type of analogy; the details of their stories or their methods of grudge dissolution are different depending on the type of exposed problems. It is especially problematic that the novels put up female ghosts. The detailed analysis on different social problems revealed in different works is carried out in Chapters III and IV.
Chapter III analyzes the features of female ghosts appearing in jeon-gi novels. Firstly, the female ghosts in Man-bok-sa-jeo-po-ki (萬福寺樗蒲記) and Lee-seng-kyu-jang-jeon (李生窺墻傳) died while trying to protect their chastity during wars. In these novels, the ghosts made an issue of their tragic love that could not be realized because of their deaths, instead of the cause of their deaths. They upheld the Confucian value of chastity with their death, but as a result, they could not lead a normal life as ordinary women. That is why they became ghosts. They appeared before Yang-saeng and Lee-seng, respectively, and became engaged in romantic relationships with them. After some time, however, they passed onto the next life with sorrow and failed to dissolve their grudge. Chastity and an ordinary life of a woman is a dilemma that cannot stand together. Although the novels brought up a question asking which of the two Confucian duties – chastity and an ordinary life of a woman – is more valuable, they could not find the answer. They reserved the answer by ending with a conclusion that ghosts went to the afterworld. In the sense that women’s chastity is an analogy to men’s loyalty, Man-bok-sa-jeo-po-ki (萬福寺樗蒲記) and Lee-seng-kyu-jang-jeon (李生窺墻傳) may be understood as literary works asking a question about Confucian values.
In the story of Ha-saeng-gi-woo-jeon (何生奇遇傳), the ghost felt it to be unfair that she died because of her father’s fault. Then, when her father engaged in a Confucian act, she was given a chance to revive. After her revival, as her father intended to dishonor the promise to marry her daughter to Ha-saeng to save his face, she persuaded her father to keep the promise naming chastity and faith as the reasons. As such, in Ha-saeng-gi-woo-jeon (何生奇遇傳), a non-Confucian act resulted in misfortune, but a Confucian act transformed misfortune into happiness. Therefore, this story can be considered as a work presenting the problems and solutions of a Confucian society via a female ghost. Here comes a dilemma, though: men, who were the main body of the Confucian society, were unable to realize Confucian values by themselves, but they did so by mediating the desires of female ghosts. In this regard, the problems of the Confucian society suggested in Ha-saeng-gi-woo-jeon (何生奇遇傳) remain unaddressed.
Prince Anpyeong in Woon-yeong-jeon (雲英傳) seemed to be the most appropriate person in maintaining the order of Confucianism as he tried to make Soo-seong-kung a place of the Confucian utopia. At the same time, he went against the order by teaching poetry to court ladies, who were considered unqualified for the training of Confucianism. Prince Anpyeong was therefore a marginal man in a Confucian society and Soo-seong-kung was an isolated space that hid the existence of court ladies. Other characters of the novel, including Woon-yeong, accepted a sexual desire of men and women as something natural and affirmed the love between Woon-yeong and Official Kim even though they practiced Confucianism. Unfortunately, when their love became known to the outside of Soo-seong-kung, and Woon-yeong had to die for violating the Confucian order. Since she could not accept it, she appeared before You-young and complained of an injustice to him. The appearance of Woon-yeong as a ghost constitutes revelation about and a resistance against an absolutized ideology of Confucianism, as well as a skepticism about the Confucian ideology.
Chapter IV presents the features of female ghosts in Korean Novels, in which the female ghosts were born because of family conflicts and played a role of bringing contradictions in family systems to light.
Jang-hwa-hong-ryen-jeon (장화홍련전) and Kim-in-hyang-jeon (김인향전) talk about the conflicts between daughters of their father’s former wives and their stepmothers. The stepmothers falsely accused their stepdaughters of losing their chastity and the fathers, who believed such accusation to be true, killed their daughters to uphold the honor of their families. Then, the dead daughters became ghosts and presented themselves in this world. Instead of personally engaging in revenge, they appeared before their county magistrate to tell their stories and succeeded in the revenge. Such indirect revenge represents that the daughters regarded the recovery of their damaged reputation as more important than the revenge itself. These revival tales show the conditions for a happy life for a woman.
In Jeong-eul-sun-jeon (정을선전), Chuyeon was falsely accused of losing her chastity by her stepmother as in Jang-hwa-hong-ryen-jeon (장화홍련전) and Kim-in-hyang-jeon (김인향전), but an immediate cause of Chuyeon becoming a ghost was her husband Eul-sun’s distrust of Chuyeon’s chastity. After Chuyeon became a ghost, Eul-sun admitted his fault, which reversed their relationship. Such reversal was possible only because Chuyeon became a ghost. She was also granted a title by the emperor, which publicly untangled her resentment. Eul-sun made effort to find a cure to revive his wife, which makes him an ideal husband figure. Chuyeon revived thank to Eul-sun, only to be framed again for losing her chastity by Lady Jeong-ryeol. This time, however, Eul-sun trusted Chuyeon completely and solved the case, which is a depiction of an ideal husband.
In Sook-yong-nang-ja-jeon (숙영낭자전), while Seon-gun, the husband of Sook-yong-nang-ja, showed absolute love and trust in her, she was in conflict with her father-in-law Baek-gong. Taking advantage of this conflict, Seon-gun’s concubine Mae-wol had Sook-yong-nang-ja be falsely charged of adultery while Seon-gun was away to take the state examination. Sook-yong-nang-ja was cleared of the false charge as her ornamental hairpin hit stone steps, but she committed suicide and became a ghost. She appeared in Seon-gun’s dream and told him about the unfairness she had experienced, hoping that the matter would be settled. Seon-gun revealed the whole story and punished the mastermind Mae-wol. Moreover, Seon-gun took over the position of his incompetent father Baek-gong, who had failed to solve the situation properly, and became a new head of household after winning the first place in the state examination. As the case was solved, Sook-yong-nang-ja revived like ghosts in other novels. Different versions of this novel describe her life after the revival from various angles. The emergence of these different versions constitutes the answers to the kinds of relationship with the in-laws in order to make Sook-yong-nang-ja happy.
Chapter V examines the significance of female ghosts appearing in classic novels based on the discussions made in previous chapters. All the female ghosts discussed in Chapters III and IV were found to be related to the value of chastity. They had to die to protect their chastity or because their chastity was damaged. This unfairness led the women to become ghosts, who then came back to this world to tell their stories and try to dissolve their grudges.
Female ghosts are found in Pilgi and Yadam. However, they are different from the ghosts in classic novels in that they only play a secondary role in the process of showing the achievements of noblemen or are utilized as ways to exhibit outstanding abilities of noblemen. In other words, the stories of the female ghosts in classic novels serve as a core element to construct the significance of the novels as the narratives unfold around the complaints and grudge dissolution of the female ghosts.
It is not that women with unjust experiences always make an appearance as ghosts in classic novels. The female characters that do not appear as ghosts simply wait until their feelings are released. On the contrary, the characters that became ghosts are more active in letting others know about their feelings of being wronged and in dissolving their grudges. In this regard, being a ghost allows a woman to speak up and act in a more active manner.
Nevertheless, the women who became ghosts were all associated with chastity. They could become ghosts only when they had a problem related to chastity. An ironic situation occurs here: the more the ghosts cherish their chastity and talk about their feeling of unjustness to the living people, the more seriously the problems resulting from chastity come out. The issue of chastity seems to be solved through grudge dissolution, but the circumstances under which women had to die because of chastity are exposed through the complaints of female ghosts. Chastity was violent to women, and this violence became harsher towards the late Joseon Dynasty. Therefore, the existence of female ghosts implies a chance to expose the problem of chastity and overturn the reality.
