과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통한 유아의 문해능력 변화 = Young children`s literacy development through science inquiry based literacy activities

The purpose of this study was to investigate the aspects of developmental processes of children's literacy through science inquiry based literacy activities and search the educational meaning in the aspect of children's literacy ability development through science inquiry based literacy activities. The meaning of this study is to understand the children's literacy learning processes, examine educational possibilities in science inquiry based literacy education, and search implications of teaching principles available for literacy teaching by shedding light on supporting systems and factors which work in children's literacy development.
The researcher made up the teaching model of science inquiry based literacy activities based on literatures of related studies. The goal of teaching model is to advance the children's literacy. Its first detailed purpose is to develop reading ability and attitude, and the second detailed purpose is to develop writing ability and attitude. The contents of teaching model are mainly divided into scientific teaching contents and literacy teaching contents. The scientific teaching contents include 'our body, living things, natural phenomena, substances and materials, instruments and machines presented as scientific inquiry contents of the 6th kindergarten curriculum, and literacy teaching contents contain four categories consisting of reading ability, reading attitude, writing ability, and writing attitude as subordinate content factors.
Teaching-learning method is based on LEA(Language Experience Approach), teaching strategies presented in SLIA(Science and Literacy Inquiry Academy)'s LtS(Literacy through Science) conceptual framework and LEA's teaching processes. In other words, based on inquiry-based science and meaning-focused literacy teaching strategies, teaching steps are composed of experiencing scientific inquiry, dictating and representing scientific inquiry experiences, reading recorded scientific inquiry experiences and words-play and reading other materials related to scientific inquiry experiences. Teacher played a role as a guide, encourager, and promotor during children's inquiry and literacy learning. This teaching model was evaluated by analyzing collected materials related to children's literacy development.
The researcher participated as a teacher in main activities and selected six children aged four in Sarang Child-care center located in Gyeonggi-do to apply the teaching model to educational field. Selecting subjects out of children in the class was done by performing standardized reading tests then children's literacy ability was classified as advanced, intermediate, and low levels. The selected six children fell into one of the levels and parents' written consents were obtained before the research started. The researcher observed chosen children's literacy behaviors showed naturally during the daily routine in classroom for one week before main activities started. The science inquiry based literacy activities were performed for five months from the fourth week of September in 2006 to the second week of February in 2007, twice a week, 36 sessions in total. Morning observations were also done three times a week, 58 sessions in total to examine children's development in literacy behaviors in daily lives during the period of main activities. The ways to collect materials are recording field observations, using recorder and camcorder, and collecting documents and children's works. Collected materials are the record note of observations, teacher's journal, transcriptions of main activities and morning observations, children's documents including science journals. The researcher investigated developmental processes of children's literacy by analyzing these materials from each child and examined an educational meaning in these activities, relating to factors which support children's literacy ability development.
The main results from this study summarized according to research questions are as follows:
1. How are the aspects of children's literacy development appeared through the science inquiry based literacy activities?
First of all, the common aspects of children' literacy development through science inquiry based literacy activities were as follows.
First, in the aspect of reading ability, recollective abilities of text's subject-related experiences were enhanced, reading strategies for understanding contents diversified and the expressions of concepts toward vocabulary embodied. Children with basic decoding skills became delicate in decoding skills and those with low decoding skills at first came to read connecting letter sounds and shapes or using non-contextual reading strategies and read at proper speed, tone and with clear pronunciations. Second, in the aspect of reading attitude, their interests, confidence and participation in reading have been enlarged and they came to enjoy reading, communicating with other children. Third, in the aspect of writing ability, they got to try representations related to experiences, came to concretely express meanings of what they wrote or drew, getting to have more concrete and varied representations and write out of their own thinking or copy words meaningful to themselves. Fourth, in the aspect of writing attitude, they got to show their confidence and pride in writing, share their own writing with others more actively, accept other children's thought about their own writing, participate in writing using various media delightfully, and write down what they have expressed for themselves or confirming what they have written based on the awareness of the relations between speaking and writing.
Next, the different aspects of children' literacy development through science inquiry based literacy activities were as follows.
Jong-Min showed 'individual literacy behaviors', that is, at first he enjoyed self-centered reading but gradually showed 'social literacy behaviors', that is, he enjoyed reading with others through communications and shared his own writing with adults and peers. Ji-Eun showed 'negative literacy behaviors', that is, at first she had lack of confidence in writing, and shared her own writing with others negatively but gradually showed 'positive literacy behaviors', that is, she shared her own writing more positively. Yu-Jung showed 'others-dependent literacy behaviors', that is, at first she asked about reading and writing to adults but gradually showed 'spontaneous literacy behaviors', that is, she read to others and write on her own. Gyeong-Suck showed 'passive literacy behaviors' because of lack of reading comprehension even though he had basic decoding skills at the beginning. In other words, at first he assumed passive attitude because he lacked confidence in meaning- centered reading and writing but gradually having confidence in giving and taking meanings by reading and writing, he showed 'active literacy behaviors'. Myeong-Soo showed 'unconcerned literacy behaviors' at first, that is, he was indifferent to reading and lacked self-confidence about writing but gradually showed 'participative literacy behaviors', getting interested and participating in reading and showing the self-confidence about writing. Finally Mee-Young showed 'concerned literacy behaviors' at first, that is, she showed interest in text and her willingness to participate in writing then gradually was characterized by 'confident literacy behaviors', showing her confidence and pride in reading and writing.
2. What is the educational meaning in the aspect of children's literacy development through science inquiry based literacy activities?
The factors which supported the development of children's literacy through science inquiry based literacy activities were 'scientific inquiry experiences', 'interactions among the peers with various levels of literacy ability' and 'children's individual and environmental literacy characteristics'.
First of all, scientific inquiry experiences facilitated the practical use of various reading strategies as well as improvement of inquiry skills, enlarged conceptions of vocabulary through various inquiry experiences, increased interest in reading by providing children with meaningful reading materials and enhanced careful observations and development of a decoding ability and a relational recognition between a letter's sound and shape. In addition to them, they also advanced realistic and creative writing along with careful observations of inquiry objects and enhanced communication abilities about writing at the atmosphere where findings through inquiry experiences were freely shared. Secondly interactions among children with different literacy abilities mutually developed literacy-related knowledge, skills, and attitudes helping each other during literacy activities, enlarged understanding of their own or other's drawings or writings through mutual communications and increased abilities to express and positively participate in writing process through inter-modeling. Thirdly in terms of child's individual literacy characteristics, children with a positive attitude towards literacy, so to speak, children who had interest and willingness to participate in literacy at the beginning showed a big difference in children's literacy development. Lastly, in the aspect of children's environmental literacy characteristics, provision of sufficient literacy experiences and environments which are proper for children's interests and development in classroom by teachers in charge helped children's literacy activities to take place naturally in the daily routine.

국문 초록 (Abstract)

본 연구의 목적은 과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통한 유아들의 문해능력 변화과정의 양상을 살펴보고, 본 활동이 유아들의 문해능력 변화의 측면에서 갖는 교육적 의미를 찾아보는 것이었다. 이는 유아들의 문해학습과정을 이해하고, 과학탐구중심 문해교육의 교육적 가능성을 살펴보며, 유아들의 문해발달에 작용하는 지원체계 및 요소를 밝혀냄으로써 문해교수에 활용할 수 있는 교수원리에 대한 시사점을 알아보는 데에 그 의의가 있었다.
본 연구를 위하여 연구자는 관계문헌 고찰을 바탕으로 ‘과학탐구 중심 문해활동 교수모형’을 구성하였다. 본 교수모형의 목표는 유아들의 문해능력 증진에 두었으며, 세부목표는 첫째, 읽기능력과 태도의 발달, 둘째, 쓰기능력과 태도의 발달이었다. 교수모형의 내용은 크게 과학교수내용과 문해교수내용으로 구분되었는데, 과학교수내용은 6차 유치원 교육과정 탐구생활 영역의 과학적 탐구내용에 제시된 ‘우리 몸, 생물, 자연현상, 물체와 물질, 도구와 기계’로, 문해교수내용은 읽기능력, 읽기태도, 쓰기능력, 쓰기태도의 4개의 범주로 각각의 하위내용 요소들을 포함하였다. 교수학습방법은 언어경험접근법(LEA: Language Experience Approach)과 SLIA(Science and Literacy Inquiry Academy)의 LtS(Literacy through Science) 개념모형에 제시된 교수전략 및 LEA의 교수과정에 근거하였다. 즉 탐구중심의 과학교수 및 의미중심의 문해교수전략을 바탕으로 ‘과학탐구경험하기, 과학탐구경험 구술 및 표상하기, 과학탐구경험 기록한 내용 읽기, 과학탐구경험 관련 단어놀이 및 다른 자료 읽기’의 교수단계로 구성하였다. 교사의 역할은 유아의 탐구 및 문해학습에 대한 안내·격려·촉진자이며, 본 교수모형에 대한 평가는 유아의 문해발달과 관련하여 수집된 자료의 분석을 통해 이루어졌다.
본 교수모형을 현장에 적용하기 위해 연구자는 경기도에 소재한 사랑 어린이집 만 4세 유아 6명을 선정하였고 연구자가 본 활동 시의 교사로서 참여하였다. 참여유아 선정기준은 만 4세반 전체 유아들을 대상으로 표준화된 읽기검사를 실시하여 유아들의 문해능력을 상, 중, 하로 분류하고 각각에 해당되는 유아들 총 6명을 임의로 선정한 후 부모의 서면동의 하에 본 연구를 수행하게 되었다. 연구자는 본 활동이 시작되기 전 1주 동안 참여유아들을 대상으로 교실의 하루일과 속에서 자연스럽게 나타나는 문해행동을 관찰하였다. 과학탐구 중심 문해활동은 2006년 9월 4주부터 2007년 2월 2주까지 총 5개월 동안 주2회씩 총 36회 수행되었으며, 본 활동이 진행되는 동안 일상생활 속에서의 유아들의 문해행동의 변화도 함께 살펴보고자 주3회씩 총 58회 오전관찰을 병행하였다. 자료수집방법은 현장기록, 녹음기와 캠코더의 사용, 문서 및 작품수집 등이었으며, 수집된 자료로는 관찰 기록노트, 교사저널, 본 활동 및 오전관찰 전사본, 과학일지를 포함한 유아의 기록물 등이 있었다. 이러한 자료들에 대한 각 유아별 사례분석을 통해 문해발달의 질적인 변화과정을 탐색해보았으며, 유아의 문해능력 변화에의 지원요소와 관련하여 본 활동의 교육적 의미를 살펴보았다.
본 연구에서 얻어진 주요결과들을 연구문제를 중심으로 요약하면 다음과 같다.
1. 과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통한 유아의 문해능력의 변화는 어떠한가?
먼저, 과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통해 나타난 유아들의 문해능력 변화양상을 공통점을 중심으로 정리하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 읽기능력에 있어서, 글의 주제관련 경험 회상력이 높아졌고, 글 내용이해를 위한 읽기전략사용이 다양해졌으며, 어휘에 대한 개념표현이 구체화되었고, 기본 해독능력을 지닌 유아들은 해독능력이 보다 정교화되었으며, 기본 해독능력이 부족한 유아들은 글자소리와 형태를 연결하여 읽거나 탈맥락적 읽기전략을 사용하여 읽게 되었고, 낭독에 있어서 적절한 속도, 어조, 분명한 발음으로 읽게 되었다. 둘째, 읽기태도에 있어서, 읽기에 대한 관심, 자신감, 참여도가 확장되었으며, 타인과 의사소통하며 읽기를 즐기게 되었다. 셋째, 쓰기능력에 있어서, 경험과 관련된 표상을 하게 되었고, 경험관련 표상이 보다 구체화·다양화 되면서 자신이 표현한 그림·글의 의미를 보다 구체적으로 표현하게 되었으며, 스스로 생각하여 써보거나 자신에게 의미있는 말을 따라 써보게 되었다. 넷째, 쓰기태도에 있어서, 쓰기에 대한 자신감과 자부심을 나타내면서 자신이 쓴 글을 타인에게 적극적으로 공유하거나, 자신이 쓴 글에 대한 타인의 생각을 수용하게 되었고, 여러 매체를 활용한 쓰기에 즐겁게 참여하였으며, 말과 글의 관계에 대한 인식을 바탕으로 구술 후 글을 확인하거나 자신이 표현하는 말을 스스로 적어보게 되었다.
다음으로, 과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통해 나타난 유아들의 문해능력 변화양상을 차이점을 중심으로 정리하면 다음과 같다. 종민이는 초기에 ‘개인적인 문해행동’, 즉 타인의 반응보다는 자신이 주가 되어 글 읽기를 즐겼으나 점차 타인과 의사소통하며 읽기를 즐기게 되었고 자신이 쓴 글을 성인 및 또래와 공유하는 ‘사회적인 문해행동’의 특성을 나타냈다. 지은이는 초기에 ‘소극적인 문해행동’, 즉 쓰기에 자신감이 부족하고 쓴 글의 공유에 있어 소극적인 태도를 보였으나 점차 스스로 쓴 글을 자신있게 보여주는 ‘적극적인 문해행동’의 특성을 나타냈다. 유정이는 초기에 ‘타인 의존적인 문해행동’, 즉 성인에게 읽기 혹은 쓰기의 도움을 요청하였으나 점차 타인에게 읽어주고 스스로 글을 적어보는 ‘자기주도적인 문해행동’의 특성을 보였다. 경석이는 초기에 기초적인 해독능력은 있지만 독해능력의 부족으로 인해 ‘수동적인 문해행동’ 즉 의미중심의 읽기, 쓰기에 대해 자신감이 부족하여 수동적인 자세를 취하였으나 점차 글로 의미를 주고받는 데 있어서 자신감을 나타내면서 ‘능동적인 문해행동’의 특성을 보였다. 명수는 초기에 ‘무관심한 문해행동’, 즉 읽기에 대해 무관심하고 쓰기에 대해서도 자신감이 부족하였으나 점차 읽기에 관심을 갖고 참여하였고 쓰기에도 자신감을 나타내는 등 ‘참여적인 문해행동’을 나타냈다. 그리고 미영이는 ‘관심있는 문해행동’, 즉 글에 관심을 보이면서 쓰기에도 참여의지를 나타냈으며 점차 읽기와 쓰기에 자신감과 자부심을 나타내면서 ‘자신감있는 문해행동’을 나타냈다.
2. 과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통한 유아의 문해능력 변화가 갖는 교육적 의미는 무엇인가?
과학탐구 중심 문해활동을 통한 유아의 문해능력 변화를 지원해준 요소에는 ‘과학탐구경험, 문해능력이 다른 유아들 간의 상호작용, 유아의 개인적 및 환경적 문해특성’이 있었다.
첫째, 과학탐구경험은 탐구기술의 증진과 함께 다양한 읽기전략사용을 촉진하였고, 다양한 탐구경험에 근거하여 어휘개념을 확장하게 하였으며, 유아에게 의미있는 읽기자료를 제공함으로써 읽기에 대한 흥미를 높여주었고, 예리한 관찰력의 증진과 함께 말과 글의 관계인식 및 해독능력의 발달을 증진하게 하였으며, 탐구대상에 대한 주의 깊은 관찰과 더불어 사실적·독창적인 쓰기를 조장하였고, 탐구경험 시의 발견들을 자유롭게 공유하는 분위기를 통해 글에 대한 의사소통능력을 증진하게 하였다. 둘째, 문해능력이 다른 유아들 간의 상호작용은 문해활동 시 또래 간에 도움을 주고받으면서 상호 문해관련 지식, 기술, 태도를 증진하게 하였고, 상호 의사소통과정을 통해 자신과 타인의 그림.글에 대한 이해력을 확장하게 하였으며, 상호 쓰기의 모델링이 됨으로써 쓰기참여도 및 표현력을 증진하게 하였다. 셋째, 유아의 개인적 문해특성에 있어서, 문해에 대한 긍정적인 태도를 지닌 유아, 즉 초기에 문해에 대한 관심 및 참여의지를 지닌 유아는 문해능력 변화의 폭이 크게 나타났다. 마지막으로, 유아의 환경적 문해특성에 있어서, 교실에서 담임교사들이 유아의 흥미와 발달에 적합하고 충분한 문해경험 및 환경을 제공함으로써 일상에서 유아의 문해행동들이 자연스럽게 발생되었다.
